I had fun time at The Butterfly Place with my daughter and her two young children. We were probably there for about any hour. There are pathways to follow and a cute little fairy village. Besides MANY beautiful butterflies of all colors flying everywhere, there were quails wandering around and a nest with their eggs in them. We also spotted some Zebra Finches-absolutely beautiful. The Butterfly Place is very interactive. The woman there was very friendly and answered all of our questions. She was letting us hold some sort of a screeching beetle. Fun! Learned butterflies only live for two weeks, except Monarchs-they migrate. There were some butterflies coming out of their cocoons-also very neat. Plenty of parking. Recommended. read more

I adored it here. As a lover of butterflies, it was magical to me. My children love butterflies. Sadly, they found they did not like being close enough to be touched. Thankfully, there is a big window indoors (pictured) for anyone who wants to see the garden but not be so close. They still had fun. To give you an idea of size: The Butterfly Place is small, and you could walk through it in 5 minutes easily. But it is lovely, and the idea is *not* to speed through. The idea is to take a break from rushing, to slow down and really see. First, your kids (or your kid-at-heart-self) can snap a photo of yourself in a butterfly cutout. Very cute. Next, a friendly staff member greets you in a sweet gift store and gives you a scavenger hunt printout. It is just a few questions, and the answers are hidden within the exhibit. (At the time we went, they gave a discount on a future visit after you returned your completed sheet.) After that is a small exhibit room. There are butterfly and moth facts to read. You'll see an enclosure with butterflies in various stages of eclosing: inside the crysalises, emerging, stretching their wings. There are remarkable non-butterfly creatures here as well: walking stick bugs, giant prickly stick insects, rhinoceros beetles, and even frogs! The last part is the best: the indoor butterfly garden. It is not large, but the joy is not in speeding through. You can make slow laps or sit on the bench. There are tons of butterflies in flight and sitting on flowers. They cross in front of you from flower to flower, at knee-level and face level and also above you by the ceiling. There are many kinds. Some have astonishing clear wings! Others are huge and vibrant and blue--those fly slowly by. It's kindof amazing that they can stay afloat without flapping as much as the others. You can stand over by where the butterflies are congregating the most, and one or more may land on you to rest. It is the most amazing and magical feeling! read more

This is a neat place to check out. I suggest wearing shorts & a tank top as well as bringing a water bottle--the butterfly room is extremely warm. Once you pay the admission fee, there are a few different things you can do. The main attraction is where the you walk with butterflies as they fly around. This is the room that's very hot. You walk along little paths, and there are some benches to sit on. They do not seem to limit the number of people in there at a time, so it felt crowded. But because it's so hot, people don't seem to stay longer than 10-15 minutes at a time. There is also a room where you can learn about different things and watch a 15 minute video if you chose to do so. Because it's so hot in the actual butterfly room, we would step out into the video room to cool down for a minute, then venture back inside. Once you pay, you can seemingly walk in and out of the room as you please. There is also a gift shop you can visit. It's a fun outing but for the price I expected there to be a little more to see. There is also no food on property so we went to Kimball Farms for lunch and ice cream after. I suggest doing both in the same day as they are so close. read more

Here right now on Mother's Day. Absolute chaos. It seems as though they have no large crowd plan at all. I don't know whether they could not get staff, which is possible, but they could have had staggered appointed visitation times. Three stars for the place. 2 stars off for the experience. This is sort of a one of a kind place to visit. Maybe I don't get around enough but it's the only butterfly sanctuary that I know about in Massachusetts. It's not a huge place but it does have an awful lot of butterflies even after having a damaged roof and losing many they recovered to full capacity over time! read more

We love it here! I love seeing my kids' faces light up with joy and wonder as they watch the butterflies flutter about. The women who work here are always kind and courteous to my children as well! They limit the entry of people into the atrium, and have markers on the pathways to help ensure social distance. My family has visited here numerous times before the covid era as well; I feel like this is a wonderful place to take the kids without worrying about a lot of touching/hands on concerns. The atrium is small- however people are always very courteous of allowing others to pass to get around. I recommend visiting the Butterfly Place if you want to spend an hour or less on an outing to entertain (and educate) your kids. read more

The place is cool, the staff was very rude. To be fair the were a lot of people during the time I went. How ever one of the employees was very rude to my group, yelling at us to keep moving through. My group paid to visit and was rushed through in 5 to 10 min. read more

Wear layers when you go because it's very warm and very, very humid! Did I mention how humid it is yet? Whew! I was so uncomfortable inside. Bring a bottle of water. It's a thirsty job watching all those tiny aviators! That notwithstanding, I immensely enjoyed the silent fluttering of winged beauty all around. Despite their seemingly random and awkward flying capabilities, they miraculously seem to avoid flying directly into any humans. That is not to say that one won't stealthily alight on your shoulder unbeknownst to you. There is an odd smell, not unlike wet mulch or a day at the zoo on a hot summer day. It's not overpowering, but it's noticeable. I did, however, stay for a couple of hours to fully appreciate the whole experience. They have benches to sit down and just watch the painted beauty of these splendid creatures. It's a wonderful experience if you're into it. It's something different to do. For a romantic afternoon, an atrium filled with sunlight, music, flowers, koi, finches, quail, and butterflies cannot be beat. The baby quail had just hatched, and I lost count at ten different butterfly species that I personally photographed. Before entering the atrium, there's a learning center that features live exhibits of various species of moths and butterflies at various points in their life cycles. These are not just exhibits; these are the actual livestock breeding areas where the butterflies and moths live before entering the atrium. We saw a cecropia moth larva power-chowing on a leaf as if it was corn on the cob, and watched painted lady butterflies laying their tiny blue eggs. The atrium is a magical place. It's humid in there, so don't bring a sweater! The sister site in Deerfield is larger and has an extensive set of gift shops and a cafeteria. The staff in Westford is incredibly friendly, genuinely passionate about butterflies, and helped me to choose a luna moth cocoon for our mom. (She loved it; it's going to hatch soon, and she'll set the lovely pale green moth free!) read more

Butterfly's! So pretty and relaxing watching them fly around. There are tons of them and if you're lucky you'll have one land on you! The room is not very large and there are a couple of benches to sit on. Soothing music playing and a very helpful informative lady working inside who pointed out specific types. It was fun to try to identify them using our paper guide as well. The inside needs some help as the exhibits and the 'video room' seems seriously outdated. Loved this place. No matter the weather outside it is nice in toasty inside. They keep it that way for the butterflies. We saw plenty of different types and to my surprise cute little Japanese button quails. I forgot my camera and wasn't able to take any photos but it was actually the best part. They have a display with different life cycles of the butterfly and you can even purchase a kit and some caterpillars to grow your own butterflies.
