Imagine Lala's feels like a chill, comfy neighborhood bar where you can actually enjoy yourself, and the ambiance, and have a conversation with whoever you came with, instead of a tourist clogged beehive? Because BOOM that's Lala's South Pole. I'm not even a big Christmas person, and I am smitten. Charming, quite, festive. It feels like a hidden gem. I probably shouldn't be reviewing it so it can stay that way, but no one like a gatekeeper. Also, absolute baller pizza from Brooklyn Pie Co. I had to really talk myself down from going back the next night just for more pizza. The service is... well what you would expect from a "trendy" Austin dive bar, as in... None, but that's part of the charm kind of? I've actually tried a lot of new pizza places lately and this is what stands out in my mind. Drinks wise? It's a bar. They serve you alcohol. Nothing special, but nothing wrong with it either.

They've got a huge back outdoor patio as well as a front patio. Brooklyn Pie Co. is set up inside to take care of your food needs. For those that don't know, Lala's South Pole (& Little Nugget) are year-round holiday bars. While Little Nugget really goes all out, South Pole isn't too shabby at all. Great decor, wonderfully curated holiday cocktails and mocktails, beers, spirits, and more. Super service. This is a place where there's no way you could ever feel sad or down and out because it's just pumpkin' with happy holiday vibes.

The only thing I felt was missing was a stronger seafood presence. I would love to see classics like calamari or a spaghetti frutti di mare on the menu. That would really round it out and take it to the next level for me.

The first red flag probably should have been the nearly empty parking lot, to the point where I honestly wondered if the restaurant was even open. We started with the cheesy garlic bread appetizer, and I was immediately disappointed. It looked more like something I would have gotten in a high school cafeteria lunch line than at an Italian restaurant. It barely had any garlic flavor, and it just wasn't what I expected. Then our entrees arrived. My shrimp scampi was completely lacking flavor, the shrimp were overcooked, and the pasta was sitting on a pool of water that made the whole dish feel off. My husband's carbonara was actually enjoyable, and that was really the only highlight of the meal. After the other dishes, I didn't even feel brave enough to try dessert. Also... can we talk about the TV playing a video on a loop of someone reviewing the restaurant and basically claiming it was the best Italian restaurant in the area? Someone definitely invested in that marketing, but unfortunately, based on our experience, it did not live up to the hype. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it missed the mark.

The space is super cute with a really inviting outdoor area that makes you want to stay awhile. There is plenty of parking which is always a plus, and the staff was incredibly friendly. My main issue is with Rocky's Grill, one of their food trucks, since not only did they get my order wrong (ordered a classic hot dog and somehow got a burger) but are way overpriced for their value. The size of the burger and fries is not up to the price despite the flavor. If I'm ordering a "basket" of fries I expect much more than the 20-ish individual fries presented for $5. The burger was also quite small which was extra disappointing since it was more bun than meat. The reason why I'm not really tanking the stars is because 1. they gave me a beer coin since I said I didn't order a burger, and 2. offered to fire up a hot dog, but that would've meant the food I was presented went to waste which I didn't want either. I'm sure they're great, but pricing should be adjusted to service and value.
