Everything was fantastic! They have great service, great prices and great food! Today we went and they had two burgers two fries and two drinks for $12.99! Unheard of!! Frito pie was amazing had great tasting chili lots of cheese, onions and jalapeños... Onion rings were hand battered light and crispy .. Burgers were char grilled and tasted amazing! Old old school burger joint. Boss Lady and I came in for lunch. She ordered one of their burgers and I their steak sandwich. The staff was real friendly. The interior needs a major facelift. Her burger was just Okay, not the best. My sandwich was kinda funky. The "steak" looked like some kind of processed meat that had been frozen. It all tasted fine. What an enjoyable place! This is a place that inflation forgot. One can get an affordable burger and if that's too expensive one can save more by getting a mini version. The mini seemed similar in size to the regular. The prices for a burger range from $3-$6. Hush puppies are only a dime each. Small fries were $1.29. You get free beans and crackers, too! First time here and definitely coming back!! The food was great!! Burger was juicy and fresh! I got a grilled CK sandwich with bacon it was delicious well seasoned, we had some seasoned fries they were crunchy and great flavor the okra was great not overly fried or bather like other places.. I had a side of chili it was pretty good, we also tried some hush puppies and onions rings they were good. For dessert we had Chocolate pie it was pretty decent. The sweet tea was good!!!! Overall i recommend Service was really helpful and friendly. The place is small not too crowded but just like we like it is perfect a lil far away from home but worth the drive!! read more

Popped in here because the sign said Best Burger in town- and this place was a total win! The gentleman at the front counter was very polite and explained all the different burger choices and sauces. The free pinto beans while you wait were delicious. I tried two different burgers, both were delicious, but the chili burger really stands out as one of the best I have ever had. The onion rings were hand bartered, crispy and crunchy. Place was clean. I can't wait to pass through Kilgore again in the future and I know exactly where I am going to stop to eat! I like to support local businesses so wanted to give it a try. First visit was great. To go order. Had catfish sandwich with seasoned fries and hush-puppies and it was excellent. Big piece of fish hung out both ends of the sandwich. Didn't care for theirs homemade tarter sause but the fish was cooked perfect. Fries and hushpuppies were great also. The next month was craving it again and this time....not so good. The fish was way overcooked to where the ends were hard and burnt and crunchy. Hushpuppies were over cooked also. Was very disappointed. I usually give restaurants 3 tries as they may of just had a bad day or a new cook so I'll give them one more try and reevaluate my review. read more

I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone living in this particular part of East Texas without a doubt. I went there on a regular basis 50 years ago when I was in college... I've visited there recently and nothing has changed. The same family still owns the place and their service and hospitality hasn't changed one bit and the food is still really good!!! read more

If you're not ordering a #3 at the Char-burger, you're doing Kilgore wrong. Just kidding, I'm not from Kilgore, so I can't tell you how to do Kilgore right. That said, my family thinks the #3 is the best and most unique burger on the menu! Forget what to think a chili burger is, the #3 has a meat-only chili, cheese, a Wendy's-like patty, and smoke sauce -- which is like a sweet BBQ sauce. If eating in, make sure to get the hush puppies (fried jalapeno cornbread) and beans that's free to those who dine in. This place gets 5 stars for the great service, the #3 and mini #3, and the nostalgia factor that my family always has going here. It was my bday weekend and I decided to spend it in my hometown. We were out and about shopping and decided we'd stop in for lunch boy am I glad we did. I'm an out of towner working for a company with roots in Kilgore so I visited this restaurant mainly because of the bad review given by another customer; I was skeptical of the review. The first time I had the fish and chips and today the foot long chili dawg; had one there and brought two home with me for later. Great food, great staff, clean establishment, and right in the middle of old town. I love places like this with their "Yesterday" charm and I highly recommend it. Everyone in Kilgore goes on and on about The Back Porch. Personally, I don't think The Back Porch is that great. I doubt I'd grade it higher than 3 stars. But I recently ate at Char-Burger off the recommendation of my nephews, and it was excellent. It's by far the best burger in Kilgore unless there's a third alternative of which I'm currently unaware. The service was friendly, the burger was fantastic and the menu included fried okra. Nice! I've never been to a burger joint where I could get my favorite fried vegetable as a side dish. It makes me feel a little less like a beached whale to eat some greens with my burger. If I'm being completely honest and critical, the decor wasn't the best, but from my perspective, that just made the overall feel that much better. When I go for a burger, I want the place to have that greasy spoon feel. It just gives the joint more credibility. But eating the burger showed that Char-Burger deserved that perceived cred. read more

I went to high school in Kilgore, graduated in '93. Every time I went to Char-burger -and let me tell you, it was a lot- I would order a Number 6 with bacon. It was sloppy heaven. I ordered this burger consistently. Couldn't get enough of it. Plus there was seasoned salt at your table to sprinkle on your fries, and free hushpuppies and pinto beans while you wait. But that BURGER, man. Anyway, after high school and one year at Harvard on the Highway I left Kilgore. But since my family still lives here I get to visit often, which means on occasion I can talk them into having supper here so I can have my favorite burger EVER. When into this business an ordered a take away. On arriving home, we found that the meals we paid for was not what we had. 2 fish dinner was short fries, cold slaw and corn sticks. 3 fish dinner had fried okra. Living 15 miles from this business, just was not convenient to return this mess to the business. Was in Kilgore 2 days later, went by there to correct this issue and was told they DO NOT DO REFUNDS. Ask why, was told that is their policy. This policy is not on the receipt or signage in this business. BUYER BEWARE! If you order something to take away or carry out, you better look at what they are giving you before you accept the order. You payment transaction is a contract and this business clearly broke that contract and committed a criminal act of FRAUD! We won't be doing business with these people in the future and if you are one who expects to get what you paid for, you may not want to do business here either. We are filing a fraud complaint with the BBB and talking to the city attorney's office about defrauding the general public. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
