You should know all rooms are on either the second or third floor, accessed by steps only, and there is no one there to help with your luggage. You reach the second floor via steep, narrow steps (about 30) with one hand rail. Assume third floor is similar. Not senior citizen friendly. And don't believe the description that says there is a chair lift. During our stay, my wife slipped on about the fifth step from the top and tumbled to the bottom. Fortunately she survived the fall, with some damage to her knee and bruising all over. Local rescue squad was prompt and professional. Ownership never reached out to us which is disappointing. We will find somewhere else to stay on our frequent visits to the Shore. read more

The bloom is off the rose under the new management unfortunately. Where before you were greeted by Gary or Charlotte at reception when you checked in, you are now greeted in an unstaffed and unlit vestibule with a letter containing directions to your room. Where before a breakfast was included each morning of your stay, you now are offered 15% off you breakfast, but more on that later. The dining area is a fraction its former charm, but still charming. The dinner menu is pretty good and both of our dinners each night of our stay there were excellent. For this reason I have given two stars. It would be impossible to say the same about breakfast. In one location, an 8AM breakfast opening was listed. Our Welcome Letter stated 830AM was the opening time. Neither time mattered, because on both mornings the Breakfast service wasn't even open. The entry to it was locked up like an after hours NYC Subway entrance. Saturday morning no human being could be found. We even went back at 10AM to see if it had opened yet, with no change. Sunday morning it was locked up, but there a woman behind the bar to give our key to as we checked out. On both mornings we had breakfast elsewhere. We stay at the hotel for special occasions, and this stay was no exception. Staying at the Charlotte Hotel and not having to leave it was always something we appreciated and looked forward to during the previous dozen or so times we had stayed there before. A particularly quaint hotel. Not really kitschy like a "flowery, Hummel-infested, lace and doilies B&B kinda place. My first impression was that it was an old west hotel with good sturdy furniture and solid wood floors. I loved it. You're given a real key. Check-in is low-key (pun intended.) Excellent service. What more are you looking for? I ate in the house restaurant and enjoyed the best crab cakes of my life. Soft, cooked perfectly, and barely holding together, so you know there's almost no filler. This is based specifically on the hotel. This would float between a one and a two star, and since we were heading on vacation, we will bump it up. We had two Queen Rooms (booked them in April) and I got a confirmation that said TWO QUEENS. The day before, I get an email that says ONE QUEEN and ONE FULL...I questioned it by calling. Person answering said they'd check and call me back and said someone there wanted to stay longer (???? Is that my issue). They said it should be fixed and would call back. The next thing I did was get and email saying TWO QUEENS. Jump to the next day when we show up. It sayd TWO QUEENS on what I paid for and what I signed. We go up to our rooms, and yes, you guessed it, I got two different sized beds (yea...we are mental and actually measured because it didn't look quite right and we were suspicous. Asked the manager, she kind of didn't say anything. We're on a vacation, i didn't want to ruin it, I just let it go). Part 2. Again we have two rooms. In the one room the AC didn't work (90 degree day out...was hot). Asked at 5pm could someone look at it. Magager came and looked very promptly....said lets give it a minute. as it is just turning on. The other room we booked AC was fine, but ok...we can give it a try. An hour goes by. Asked at 6pm. She came up, messed with the remote. Nothing changed. We walked around the town a bit. Came back and still was like roasting potatoes in the room. It's now 9pm. I asked her, she came up felt that it was hot, said she was going to call someone (the owner). She didn't come back. Honestly, now I'm feeling a bit miffed because this really should have been dealt with hours ago. I went down at 9:30....was kind of fed up...and I see the manager not on the phone but doing a duty for the restaurant. I contemplated opening the window and just dealing with it, but the AC units (like central AC units) are blowing right outside the window, so that isn't an option). Anyway, I go down and am now wondering what is being done if anything? I at that point asked to have my money refunded. I'll just drive to VA Beach and find something else. This just wasn't going to work. Only then did things happen where she called the owner of the hotel. With this, the chef of the restaurant had to get a window unit from some back room and give it to us. I overheard a conversation where she was talking at the hotel bar to the owner where the air conditioning in this room is tied to another room above it or something (???) which is irrelivant honestly. Where we supposed to ask another guest at the hotel to turn on their AC so we could have it? The whole thing was strange, and really, I shouldn't have had to ask three times for AC. It kind of put our day away on ice (pun intended). I cannot recommend this hotel. It left a bad taste in my mouth from the beginning. I'll generously give 3 stars because the atmosphere of the town seems like a great place. read more

I stopped and spent the night at this really really cute hotel. It was like a hotel that you would stay at in some small European city. Very quaint and very well-kept. Very unique. The room that I stayed in I'm certain was like no other room in the hotel I'm sure in every room is unique onto itself. The room was extremely clean, comfortable and quiet. The people who work there were very friendly. The restaurant that was attached had excellent food and very reasonably priced. The only downside was parking they don't have their own lot. However, there is a town lot perhaps 100 feet away.Because the ambience was so relaxing and friendly and inviting I noticed even the guests kind of felt that way too. I would definitely recommend anyone staying in the area, who doesn't want a typical boring hotel to stay there. read more

Well, we booked our dinner reservation at 6:30pm. It is now 7:30pm, and our dinner has still not arrived at our table. My unsweetened iced tea had black particulates at the bottom of the glass. This may be attributed to tea itself. One can only hope. Dinner has arrived. Hold tight. OMFG... This was the BEST meal of our entire vacation! It was so impeccable. My husband got the highly expensive ribeye. He nearly declined it. I insisted he try it, because Yelp says it would be great. Boy, were they right! Huge helping... delicious meat. My salmon was incredible. The risotto under it was so good, I'm sad it's over. I could totally go for another serving, . Stephanie was lovely. She delivered our meal nicely, and was a pleasure to deal with. I was a little displeased at first that it took so long to arrive, however, food this good takes time. Now, having eaten it, I don't mind at all. If you are in VA, in any realm, come to Charlotte's. My god! This is the food you will be talking about a week from now. You won't forget it. Had high hopes for this place. Very disappointed. Very poor management skills. This is at no fault to the new guy working there. Says they have a full bar but didn't have white wine we order or ingredients for a Shirley temple. Red wine was served cold, their online menu doesn't match the menu in the restaurant. It took an hour just to get appetizer (crispy shrimp) which were poorly prepared. Definitely not worth the $13-16. We left before we got our actual food. Asked to talk to management, which was a mistake. She had an attitude from the beginning about the service and things got totally out of hand. Our waitress Stephanie answered many questions and paced our courses well. The food was hot and fresh and cooked to specific order. Medium Rare here is exactly Medium Rare. This hotel and restaurant is above 100% the BEST place I have stayed and eaten at! From the second we walked in the door, we were welcomed by Gary, one of the owners, and moments later by his wife and partner, Charlotte. Amazing people whom have put their hearts and soul into their business and it is well represented here. Every little nicknack is special. Every piece of art, whether hanging on the wall in a frame or painted directly on the wall, was the work of Chatlotte's talent. The bed has a memory foam topper and feather pillows that allow for a deep and comfortable sleep. The bathroom was roomy and very clean. The entire establishment was squeaky clean and top notch! The quaintness, calming music, and decor was just amazingly relaxing. The RESTAURANT!! I can't say enough about the food! Exquisite. Every single bite! Wine list had just about anything your heart desired. Lobster bisque was amazing. Hard to keep from licking the bowl clean. The bread was perfectly made. Cre'me brûlée was delectable! Salmon, chicken, you name it. All amazing! Standing ovation to the chefs! Definitely not a place to be missed! Take a stroll around town and read about the historical sites. On a whim traveling, we booked an overnight stay at the Charlotte Hotel. We were beyond pleased with everything this quaint, tastefully decorated, inn had to offer. Our suite, located in the annex guest house was spacious, clean, & beautifully arranged. Wonderful amenities, toiletries, fluffy towels & the most comfortable mattress. We all slept very well! The home, it's beautiful garden entrance, comfortable porch added that above & beyond special touch! The complimentary breakfast at their hotel restaurant was beyond superb, as well as the surrounding decor! We will be sure to visit again next year on our end of summer vacation! read more

My wife Donna took me for a surprise dinner at this awesome establishment. We had the best dinner, service was fantastic and the atmosphere is just to die for. The night we went we had live acoustic music that was really a lot of fun. Everything on the menu looked fresh, I think it is pretty much a scratch kitchen. The bar is cozy, very romantic. This is the perfect date night place! You can even book a rook there!:) I had the filet and it was cook perfectly. This place is just done right. It is NOT fast food or fare of that you would see at chain restaurants. It is a true homemade quality fare that you don't often get dining out. The menu is not large, this is not the Cheesecake Factory. However they cover all the basis. I would just order whatever is on special, it is all good! This was not your typical hotel restaurant. This was memorable enough that we want to go back to Onancock just for more of this restaurant. The Vesper Martini was perfectly balanced in its flavors and expertly mixed. The Moscow style raw oysters (a splash of vodka, and topped with crème fraiche and caviar) was new to us, and a great combination of alcoholic/creamy/salty that all worked to enhance the natural brininess and sweetness of the oysters. The crabcake here was outstanding - clean and fresh tasting, broiled, with discernable lumps of crabmeat throughout. For dessert my partner declared that coconut layer cake to be one of the best she'd ever had. (And that's saying something.) The best place to eat dinner in Onancock. Note that the restaurant is closed at dinner Mondays and Tuesdays. read more

We stayed here in May 2011, a little getaway from Arlington. We arrived around 4 PM on a Friday afternoon. After checking in to our room - to which we were so kindly escorted by Gary - we took a stroll around the neighborhood. The town was incredibly quiet, yet every person we encountered was friendly. It is about a half-mile walk to the marina. We had dinner at the hotel, and the food was delicious. I started with the goat cheese tart and small salad. Oftentimes, little boutique restaurants like this one like to 'skimp' on the portion size, but this was just right. At the same time, it was not overwhelming. The side salad tasted just like it had been picked from the garden - a rare, unexpected, and pleasant find! For the entree, I had the two crab cakes. Being on the Eastern Shore, your expectations are naturally high; mine were exceeded. The sauce was perfect, too. For dinner, hubby and I split a piece of the chocolate cake. The room we stayed in was well-decorated, and definitely a cut-above a boring hotel room. It felt like we had 'escaped.' The bathroom was nice, too, and larger than what I was expecting. The bed was very comfortable. I would have to say my only complaint was that the rooms are not entirely soundproof. That being said, you can sometimes get that with a traditional B&B (which, this is not). I could hear all of the conversations taking place in the hallway as well as a guest across the hall who probably needs to have his tonsils taken out. Unfortunately a death in our family brought us together in Onancock. It has been years since I've been to Onancock and this hotel is a new addition. The hotel was amazing. The staff were amazing! The hotel is beautiful. It is everything you could want in an historic town. Warm, inviting and a multitude of quaint details that enrich the feel and experience. From wide plank floors to antique furniture to modern, comfortable bathrooms, the owners have done an amazing job. The staff was incredible. Warm and inviting, they bent over backwards to make our visit easy and trouble free. Dinner at the restaurant was superb. I would easily rank the chef up amongst the best that we've enjoyed. And the bar was spot on, even whipping up difficult and unusual requests. read more

The Charlotte is not your average hotel. My friends and I have stayed there for the past three years on our way to the Outer Banks (and stop to say hello on our way home). We now look forward to visiting Onancock as much as reaching our final destination. The ambiance is perfect; warm and inviting. When you open the door, you are welcomed by the smell of a clean home. At that point, you must pause to take in the attention to detail, which is unparalleled. The owners, Charlotte and Gary, have poured their heart into every nuance of the building. Charlotte's artwork adorns the walls, capturing Audubon-esque plants and animals. If that's not enough, she has also painted subtle, beautiful details on nearly every surface of the hotel. Gary can be found at the front desk or behind the bar (that he made with his own hands) concocting delicious drinks that are sure to put some hair on your chest. The rooms are airy and bright, with billowing, breezy curtains and beds that feel like clouds. In the early morning, you can enjoy a coffee from the Keurig downstairs, which I recommend you sip while strolling the streets of Onancock and visiting the farmers market. There, you'll meet local legends, like folk artist, Mama Girl. Just make sure to be back in time for breakfast, which is as outstanding as their dinners. We cherish our memories at the Charlotte and look forward to many more. read more
