We love Maurice/Kuchi! Uplifted ambiance in a small town. One of the only places to get sushi on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and certainly the best. The bar and dinner area at Kuchi makes you feel like you're in a big city with it's elevated atmosphere. The service is always exceptional. Came here on the way home from Delaware. We wanted something not too heavy and ended up at this place. They were connected to another place called Kuchi Sabishii sushi which had just what we wanted. Tons of variety and small portions you can continue to order. The sushi was fresh and very unique. Flash fried sushi rolls did not disappoint. The restaurant itself had a very nice ambiance and our server for the most part was pretty attentive. However, when the restaurant got packed with parties, our service did slow down. I noticed another table waiting upwards of 10+ minutes for their server to even come by to offer them beverages. Only downfall of that experience but we came in at a time where it wasn't busy so we got our food fine. If we came later, then it would have been a different story, assuming from what I observed towards the end of our visit. read more

We hardly ever miss their BBB special (Burger, Bourbon, Beer) for $13, and almost always supplement with a sushi roll from their fantastic selection. Prices are more than fair for the high quality you receive and whether you're seated inside, on the patio, or in the lounge, the ambience is always delightful. Maurice was a great restaurant with bold, innovative dishes that scored, and attentive service, albeit at a high price. Alas, those days are over. The same dishes are now served without the old panache, and crowds of discounted diners overwhelm the staff. Our last visit featured lack-luster food, no knives(!), staff too busy to respond, cold expresso, undrinkable cappuchino, very high priced alcohol ($15 for a short glass of wine), in a dining room packed with others paying a less than full price. If you can find it on Groupon, this may be worth a try. My last review was taken down after a complaint by Maurice that detail was lacking. Let's see how long this one lasts. read more

Best sushi on the ESVA!!! All of their specials are top notch as well. I have never had a bad meal here. My favorite roll is the Godzilla Roll. If dining in, I would recommend making a reservation & expect to be there for a couple hours. It's not that the service is slow, it's just a fine dining experience. They are very attentive. I recommend going on a Wednesday night for their BBB Special. Burger, beer, & a shot of bourbon for $13 (Can't get better than that!!). Thursday is their half price wine night. Ate at Kuchi for the first time! Will DEFINITELY be back!!! Oh my goodness, the suchi was incredible! Had the jumbo veggie roll - perfect! Appetizer was bacon wrapped scallops - divine!!! Our waitress, Lily, was great and knew all the different desserts to choose from the top of her head. Ambiance was like something you'd except to find in NYC but it was very cool, different, bohemian, eclectic.... Something you wouldn't expect to find here on the Shore but super glad we do!!!! The only recommendation is to serve Midori Sour mixed drinks. Surprised that wasn't on the bar as it's a Japanese melon drink. read more

So the first time I visited Maurice was 2022 for Valentine's day. It was a busy night, full house. The service was slow but we chalked it up to being very busy. I don't know this for a fact, but we suspect our waitress was the owner's wife. The food was very good, I had a ribeye that was huge and perfectly cooked. My wife had the special which was beef tip lasagna, which was excellent!! This place is pricey, it not an everyday place. Expect to pay about $30-40/ person. But, the waitress, THE WAITRESS!! If you are going to command gourmet prices to go with your experience, then the service should be at least enough warrant the price tag. The second time was tonight: Father's day. My wife made reservations and were sat promptly. And then here comes THE WAITRESS! I told myself, everyone has a bad day, a night. Give it a chance. So I opened my mind and embraced it. We got our drinks and everyone was settling in perusing the menu. I ordered sushi and my two sons did as well. My wife ordered the Pork tenderloin with pancetta. They have a very tasty charcuterie plate, we and ordered that. The appetizer came and we were happily munching on meats and cheeses. The waitress asked if I would like another beer, and I accepted. Well about this time a four top across from us was seated. As I was enjoying the evening I took note of the fact that they had the same older waitress. But there was one small problem. They seemed to get their drinks and appetizers with lightning speed. 20 minutes had passed and I had an empty beer glass staring at me. Meanwhile the other table, their glasses never got more than half full before water was filled and cold beers abounded! So eventually my beer arrives after a 20 minute hiatus from the waitress. Fast forward , from the time we finished our appetizer to our entree, 45 minutes of staring at the tablecloth. I enjoyed my time with my family and made idle conversation,I certainly was not expecting fast food times here folks.But just short of an hour for an entree to arrive at the table and adding to the fact we were never checked on other than to replace a glass of water that had a giant hair in it, was a little excessive. To add insult to injury, when the bill arrived the waitress had charged us $5 for rolls that she offered to my kids as a peace offering for taking so long! After a conversation with the owner and pleading my case he did take our 3 alcoholic drinks off the bill. But offered no condolence for the service or anything apathetic other than saying he adjusted the bill and whisked away. I would love to have been a pro football player, but I know my limitations. Just because you are part owner of a restaurant, does not impart you with osmotic powers of a wait person. Stick with opening wine and schmoozing with the customers. read more

This place is our favorite restaurant in Onancock and quite frankly the best sushi you can get on the VA eastern shore. My husband and I have always enjoyed the main restaurant for special dinner dates, but since they have opened the lounge area next door, we visit more often. The atmosphere there is more casual, but defintely not a dive bar. They have couches, decorative pillows, and snazzy chandeliers. They have a $13 burger, beer, and bourbon special on Wednesdays you can't beat and it includes the tastiest truffle fries. The mixed drinks always look like a party in the cup! However, the star of the show is the sushi. It melts in your mouth and bursting with flavor. It does not matter what roll you get, I promise you, you will be happy. High class service and food hiding in the small town Onancock! We sat outside in the garden/patio, it was a Tuesday night and at one point we were the only table outside. Throughout the meal the friendly and professional service blew us away. The bottles of water on the table and the fly fans were nice touches. My husband started our meal with a cocktail off their menu, it was I got a class of cava which was amazing and a great price for $10 a glass. First of all- we are gluten free and we LOVED seeing all the GF options and the notes that some dishes could become GF. We started with mussels and the cheese/charcuterie board. The mussels were good- the sauce was more of a thick tomato sauce which was nice but we prefer when it's more of a broth so we can dip our fries in. The cheese board was probably the lowest point of the meal. We ordered it GF and to our surprise that just meant no crackers or bread. I can't believe for $14 they couldn't just have some GF crackers on hand. The meat was also very basic but the cheese and the honey, mustard and jam were amazing. For our main course ordered a bottle of the cava- it came out cold and it was presented and poured with ease. We then shared the stuff flounder with blue crab. Wow- it was sooooo good. A very large portion and was perfect for us to share. We ended the night with the flourless chocolate cake, need I say more? Overall, a very pleasant experience and we look forward to going back! read more

Stopped in here on a road trip with my kids. It's a perfect date night place! The kids thought it was very fancy and enjoyed their wine glasses of ice water . I would recommend this place as a quiet spot, fairly priced, and with a great chef. I didn't meet the chef, but the food was excellent. The California roll should have been rolled a little tighter, but we can't complain about a generously sized roll with real lump crab meat. The salmon was so delicious that even my 5 year old was relishing it, and he doesn't typically like salmon. Props to them for having a lovely restaurant, kind staff, and a clean restroom, and for not raising an eyebrow at my coming in with two children underdressed. read more

Just finished dinner here and writing this review as I sit on the porch since we are staying at the inn. This was one of the best meals we have had in months! The food was delicious and so fresh! I'm between a 3/4 star rating. We ate here for brunch last month and one negative is the portions in some of their specials is small plate at best. My wife's dish was missing the hollandaise sauce which made he's rather bland. We did however enjoy the sushi but they need to be more clear sushi doesn't start until after noon. I'm writing this now debating if we should try again tomorrow and give them one more chance to see if refinement has been on their mind. read more

We had dinner at Maurice's last night, and let me say: it's been a while since I've been to a restaurant in which every single thing I ate was so, consistently good! Fantastic quality, flavor, everything. We had the shrimp cocktail and arancini as appetizers. The shrimp came with an avocado-corn salad that was lime-y and crisp, and the shrimp was also the perfect texture. The arancini, covered in super-tasty tomato sauce, was also super satisfying. We then shared a spinach salad, which had cranberries, Virginia ham, blue cheese and balsamic. Also very tasty, which is something I don't often say about side salads. As an entree, we shared the paella, which was bursting with flavor. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the rice was cooked perfectly. Most restaurants seem to offer desserts as an afterthought--not this place! We had a very generous slice of their lemon blueberry mascarpone cake, and it was simply scrumptious! From the warm croissants to the Croque Monsieur "egg rolls" to the crab cakes, spinach salad, and sushi rolls such as the Fiery Fried Flounder and Godzilla Rolls, the food is always delicious. The service is great and friendly as well. The Kuchi Lounge is such a surprise in the middle of the mostly rural Eastern Shore and all the cocktails and small plates (dumplings etc) are next level. Maurice was one of the best dining experiences I've had on the eastern shore since moving here, and honestly one of the best dining experiences I've had in general. Before I get into the real review I did want to say you definitely want to book a reservation! This will ensure you're able to get in, since they are smaller and seem dedicated to giving the best experience they can. That being said, once you've got your reservation you're good to go! The service was great, the waitress was very helpful and informative on specials and gave many recommendations. The inside is small but it feels quaint and not overly packed. It's also gorgeous inside and out. As someone who's native to Virginia Beach it was refreshing to have an amazing meal in a quiet location- as opposed to going downtown and dealing with packed parking lots, long wait times for everything, etc. Maurice really is a gem. We had two of the sushi rolls, both of which were very generously sized. We also enjoyed bacon wrapped scallops ( nicely cooked, not overly cooked and perfect flavor), stuffed flounder ( large portion and fresh taste), and some mussels with frites. The sauce for the mussels is a perfectly balanced tomato based broth which complimented the mussels well. If you like seafood, fusion cuisine, and unique dining experiences that are a break from the usual, I would definitely recommend checking it out. While it may be considered on the pricey side for some, it's right in line with other dining establishments on the shore or elsewhere, I was very happy with what we got for the price. read more

I've been staying at the Maurice AirBnB for 3 nights and it's been wonderful! The "green room" I'm in is very French-country charming and the restaurant is to die for!!! Had the "spicy scallops roll", the "lump crab cake", and tasted the lobster roll, chicken cordon bleu and pork belly. Topped it off with a dirty martini, their signature "Maurice Mule" and some local Viognier. Sean "Maurice" (the owner) is lovely as well as his staff.
