We had an overall pleasant stay at this hotel, mainly due to its excellent location. It's right next to Times Square, which was incredibly convenient, yet surprisingly quiet considering how close we were to everything. The front desk staff were helpful and friendly throughout our stay. We requested a crib, which was promptly provided along with a thoughtful baby kit that included shampoo and lotion--this was a nice touch and much appreciated while traveling with a baby. We also asked for a stroller, and one was provided; however, it was not an UPPAbaby stroller as advertised on the hotel's website. The site specifically notes a partnership offering complimentary access to the UPPAbaby MINU stroller, which we were expecting to use, so this was disappointing. The room and bathroom were both nice and well-maintained, although the hair dryer in our room did not work. The complimentary breakfast at The Lambs Club was delicious (smoked salmon and pancakes were a highlight). That said, our server did not seem particularly friendly or welcoming. This may have been because we arrived a little after 10:00am, and they close the kitchen at 10:30am, but it still affected the experience slightly. Unfortunately, there were a few service-related issues. Our $125 property credit was not applied until I contacted our credit card company afterwards, and we also did not receive any welcome amenity (both listed as a Chase Reserve credit card benefit), which was disappointing given the hotel's luxury branding. Overall, the location and comfort were definite positives, especially for families, but some missed details and unmet expectations kept this stay from being truly exceptional. read more

We stayed here in early November for a girls' NYC trip and loved the location- directly across from the Hudson Theatre and an easy walk to Bryant Park. It's definitely a splurge, but I booked through Amex FHR and our daily included breakfast was a great perk, removing the hassle of having to find a place every morning. Our room wasn't ready by 4 p.m., but the manager apologized and made it right, which we appreciated. The room showed a bit of wear and minor damage in places, but it was surprisingly spacious for New York, with two queen beds, and the black-granite bathroom with mirrors everywhere felt very glamorous. I accidentally left my flat iron behind, and the hotel reached out and arranged return shipping at my expense, which was efficient and thoughtful. Overall, the hotel is small, intimate, and has a charming old‑school Art Deco feel that suits the theater district perfectly. read more

I was a little nervous trying something new but my first time at this property was a very pleasant surprise. It's a luxury boutique property that takes you back in time. If you're going to shows or want to be in Times Square, the location can't be beat. The luxury king room was perfectly appointed. Some reviews I read indicated that rooms were dated but mine was modern, luxurious and extremely clean. The bathroom was fun with all the mirrors and the closet was amazing. Bed was very comfy. For over $500 a night, this hotel should deliver a flawless experience. Instead, we were jolted awake at 6:45 AM by a loud, high-pitched noise coming from the bathroom. It lasted about 15 minutes--long enough to ruin our morning. When I called the front desk, I was told maintenance doesn't start until later, so nothing could be done. The woman identified herself as the manager, but when asked if she could offer any resolution, she said she'd "escalate to her Director." In other words, she wasn't empowered--or willing--to help. For the record, the noise sounded like it could have been caused by a plumbing issue--possibly a faulty valve, pressure surge, or pipe resonance. Either way, it's unacceptable for guests to be disturbed like this with no immediate remedy or accountability. At this price point, guests shouldn't have to deal with early morning noise issues or vague, dismissive customer service. We expected better. We won't be staying here again, and I won't be recommending this place to anyone. Actually too bad, as the property, rooms and location were top notch. The most awful experience ever. We arrived very late. Just after 1am. We were welcomed and went right up to the room to go to bed for the night. Our daughter jumped into bed and asked what these tiny black bugs were. Bed bugs everywhere including the material headboard. I went down to ask for an alternate room. They asked to come up to the room- at which time they also took pictures of the bugs. They apologized. Sold out they looked for alternative locations but the only one available by Hyatt was quite far away. We found our own accommodations. In a nearby hotel. Because we had to rush over before the computer system shut down for the night the front desk at the Chatwal assured me they would issue a refund and that we should just hurry over. The night manager even sent me an apology text. However we soon found out that no refund was issued. Not only were we charged for the arrival night but for two additional nights as well. I reached out to the hotel, the manager that texted me and to Amex travel. To this day we have not been issued any type of refund. It's truly sad that they wouldn't just do the right thing and refund us our stay. read more

The stafff, incredibly attentive and kind. The problem????? Unless inside of your room, the hallways of this hotel WREAK of mildew. It is so pungent and strong that it was impossible to ignore. Where there is mildew, there is most likely mold. I was relieved that our stay was short. We headed down to look at the gym and pool where the smell was unbearable. I hope this gets addressed. As the horrible smell did not compliment the wonderful ambiance that this hotel "could" enjoy. read more

My family spent a night at the Chatwal over the holiday weekend and I would say the experience was uneven. Our room was nice, not amazing, but nice overall. Feel a little bit dated even but still very nice. Location is amazing, very close to a lot of stuff including Times Square and Bryant Park among other things. The woman who checked us in was just ok, didn't talk about amenities or the things that they offered that we didn't know about such as a complementary uppababy stroller for us to use? We only found out long after it was too late. What was really bad was that they called our room after 9PM to tell us that they wanted to deliver our welcome amenity. We have a 4 year old and this woke us all up. We found out that a manager was the one who called us at this time. Maybe use some judgement about this and don't call guests later in the evening? I stay about 100 nights in a hotel every year and this was the first time this has ever happened. I was not happy. I did talk to the manager the next day and they gave us a bouquet of flowers, a bracelet and necklace for our 4 year old and were very apologetic. This helped for sure but overall, I don't think I would come back here. Poorly trained staff and not amazing rooms for the price means I would not recommend coming back. read more

I stayed at this hotel back in March and unfortunately had a number of issues during my stay. That night, I brought up my concerns to the staff, but was constantly given the runaround and nothing was ever resolved. After returning home, I attempted to speak with hotel management and was told the general manager would contact me -- that never happened. I booked this property through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, and after getting nowhere with the hotel directly, I had no choice but to escalate the matter through Amex. Thankfully, they stepped in and handled the issue professionally. What's disappointing is that the hotel then responded to Amex claiming I never contacted staff or management with any complaints -- which is simply not true. Thankfully, call logs and documentation don't lie. In a world full of tech and receipts, it's shocking a hotel would try to gaslight a guest instead of owning up and making it right. Kudos to American Express for always having their cardmembers' backs. This hotel, however, was a letdown -- both during the stay and in the way they handled follow-up. read more

Beautiful hotel in the heart of Manhattan. Wonderful room and they upgraded us to a suite. We checked our bags here and walked around the city until our room was ready at 4pm. They brought us a fan which covered any outside noise. The hotel is very convenient to lots of attractions. The Lamb club has a beautiful bar on the second floor. Really enjoying the central location and nice service. They provided a beautiful and comfortable holiday getaway. read more

We stayed here for 5 nights in June 2019. This hotel has some incredible strengths and just a few weaknesses but overall, it's a real quiet peaceful refuge in the middle of a busy crazy city. Inside, you would never know you are in NYC Times Square show district. My entire stay was hosted as part of a week long engagement. This is not the place to stay if you are concerned about prices. A full breakfast here is $40 per person so $100 a couple with tax and tip. What I loved: The toilet hands down was the best part of my room. See my pics. It was electronic and had a butt cleaning spray that must have had a laser because it was accurate every time. It would shoot hot water directly into the right spot at first shot and the hot water would continue for at least a minute. Felt so good, and got you clean like you need to be. If all toilets had that, the world would be a better place. It also has a front sprayer for women. When you are done with the water, you tap the hot dryer button and it drys you down there--perfect! Plus the toilet seat was always heated. If my schedule was not so busy I would have spent more time here. The rain shower was excellent--as good as it gets in shower technology, although sometimes the temp control did not hold the temp and needed adjusting during the shower. I loved that they covered the bed headboard with a sheet. All hotels should do that. You know how you hate closing hotel double curtains with your hand before bed or opening them in the morning--who knows how dirty/dusty they are--Not here: They have remote controlled curtains--Channel 1 for the outer and Channel 2 for the inner. They were the best and fun to use. It was one of my favorite things to do everyday. Everyone should get them--perfect opening and closing every time. The bed was very comfortable. The service from the front door and desk staff was impeccable. Immediate response for everything. The King bed standard room was tight for 2 people--I had to keep pushing in the desk chair to get by and two people can't pass one another in the room. These are small rooms like on a ship. Our room faced the back--an old rent controlled apartment building (see pic), but with the double pain high quality windows closed and not facing street side you could hear a pin drop at all times it was so quiet and peaceful. Location is perfect if you are in town to see shows--you will be able to walk to all of them. It's also close to the E train that takes you right into 1 World Trade Center. I took it and it's the fastest way--20 minutes--E train's last stop. A constant annoyance both at night and each morning was not having a refrigerator in the room. It's a problem with no solution because as I looked around the room, there is no room to put one. We had no place to put the great dinner leftovers, cakes, or some yogurt or hard boiled eggs for the morning to get us going. Food went to waste. No place to keep bottles of water cool. Sure the staff would come up and take care of that for us--but you know--it gets old keep calling them for help. Like at home, you just want some things right there immediately. The other weak spot was the hotel restaurant. Because it is a small low volume operation, even though it carries a high end menu with high end prices, it does not result in quality and efficiency. They can't afford to have an executive chef and professional manager there full time. One morning our order was forgotten and we had to go through 3 people to get it out. At dinner, a request for the salmon to be cooked medium came out sushi raw after I cut into it. When I told the waiter, instead of remaking it, they gathered all the bits and put it back in the oven and re-delivered the pieces to us. I was not expecting that. I would like to see a breakfast menu that lends itself toward efficiency like an Omelet with a choice of egg whites and a clear list of add-in's to choose from. How about Yogurts from Fage or Chobani and some grain cereals. Freshly cut and cooked potatoes. Freshly squeezed OJ and Grapefuit juice for their sophisticated clientele. Their lounge is an excellent environment for pleasure or business and I am sure they can mix any concoction you desire. They have the best complementary Mercedes car service from 2 PM to 10 PM that will drop you off within a 20 block radius. The will also complementary press your clothes and shine your shoes. Their towels and sheets are top quality and housekeeping is excellent. Overrall, this is a fine small personalized hotel to stay if your budget can handle it, with the limitations I outlined above that may not be a concern for your stay. read more

I'm LIVID! For starters - I raved about this hotel after my stay to everyone because I loved my stay here. They upgraded my room and have heated toilet seats and tv's in the bathroom and is a block from my office. I travel to NYC for work quite a bit and was going to make this my go-to - like legit about to book it for next week. LOW AND BEHOLD - I just got my receipt from my stay to do my expenses and had 3 $5 mini bar charges on it. I didn't drink anything from the mini bar. MIND YOU, I have before like I am that girl who has the $15 Pringles, but NOT THIS TIME. Like, if I did it, I'LL OWN IT. But, I simply did not. SO - I call the hotel to let them know I was charged wrongfully and the woman on the phone was so rude and did not care. She was just like ok? I was like UM it's not that big of a deal I guess but just so you know this is wrong and an error on your part??? And she was like ok??? SO rude and indifferent and unhelpful. Like its simply the principle. They could've righted this wrong and I'd be back on the heated toilet seat NEXT WEEK :( CUSTOMER SERVICE OVER EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!! AND THEY DON'T GOT IT. There was nothing not to like. Location was perfect, we are basically at Time Square. By the way Travel and Leisure consider this hotel 85 of one of the top 100 hotels in the World. We came in around 2 PM knowing that the room possibly would not be ready until four. When we came in the hotel apologize for the fact that it was not ready but they promised they will do there best to get it ready as soon as possible. We were hungry so going to there restaurant seemed perfect. Thirty minutes into our lunch we received a message letting us know our room was ready. When you go to a small sometimes called boutique hotel things are a little different. Although you may not save any money you'll be treated more personally. When I go to a small hotel it reminds me of knowing the milk man Clyde that would deliver the milk to our house when I was a child. When I was a kid I felt Clyde was our friend. When a boutique hotels is run properly you can sort of get that feeling. When I am in Europe I try to go to smaller private hotels. Generally but not always I am happy with that choice. If you are a person that is interested in the history of the hotel you may like the story about Chatwal. Apparently roughly 100 years ago this building was a private club for actors of Broadway. Drew Barrymore's father John Barrymore lived in the club at times. If you were lucky enough to be accepted as a member you would become a LAMB. At least that's the version I was told If you read some of the other positive reviews it's all true. I have a remote control that could open and close the shades of the window. Yes my WARM Chatwal toilet could do everything and MORE a lot more. Although I will not marry this toilet, the toilet and I are now dating. Bottom line is my wife and I were very happy, and next time we go to New York we will be coming again to Chatwal. read more

This is one hotel I truly miss these days . I can't wait for the reopening so I can have a quality place to go to when I'm visiting the city . I've stayed here 3 times and every time was amazing . I stayed twice in the heritage suite and once in the Chatwal suite and all I can say is I felt like a princess every time . The Chatwal suite was lovely for the outdoor space and views , I loved enjoying my morning tea and complimentary newspaper outside . The bathrooms are where I spend most of my time when here haha , incredible luxurious raindrop shower or jetted bathtub , tinted mirrors, marble floors ,bidet- Japanese toilet , warmer ,the works .. I always wondered why these toilets /bidets aren't more popular in the states , it's almost everywhere in Europe and I think it should be here as well . The beds are incredibly comfortable , the curtains are controlled by a remote so you do not have to touch them . Service here is impeccable, from the front desk to maid service it's A1 . I stayed here for three nights. The first night was fantastic: great room, free upgrade with my AMEX card, etc. The second and third nights were absolutely terrible. There was someone banging on the wall either somewhere on floor 6 or above until 2-3 in the morning. I called the front desk and spoke to Oliver. I was told there was "nothing he could do" other than potentially give me a room upgrade if I came to stay with them again in the future. Which is ridiculous because I paid over $700 a night and only slept 6 hours total my last two nights there due to the noise I described above. GUESTS BEWARE! This property lacks professionalism and is not a 5 star hotel. We booked this since it was part of Amex fine hotels and due to the location. This hotel is at best a 3 star hotel. I wasn't going to leave a bad review but after being hung up on multiple times and not being able to speak to a manager, I couldn't hold it in. The hotel has old carpets that haven't been cleaned properly, and to add to that the carpets are also on the walls, so if you are someone with allergies, do not book. There was 1 bell man who was good, the rest don't offer to help, open a door for guests and are always on their phone. We ordered rooms service in the morning and when we came back later that night, it had still not been cleaned up. Although the hotel is close to time square, hit brings a not so great crowd next door, which was concerning when walking at night. I could continue, but STAY AWAY! read more

This review is for the lobby restaurant and bar. The regular staff at the hotel was wonderful. The lobby wait staff was nice as well. There is a very pretty fireplace in the dining area. Recently I got a drink that was pretty expensive at the lobby bar and was given a chipped glass. I was allowed to drink my drink with the chipped glass, despite having pointed it out. I flipped the glass and lived to tell the story, but given the place and price points, that should not have been an option. read more

My one week stay at the Chatwal was very enjoyable and made my first trip to New York quite nice. The front desk staff and doorman were professional and kind. The room was a little smaller than I'm used to on the west coast, but tasteful and nice. There was plenty of closet space, and closets were well- lit which is nice when your travel partner is sleeping and you need to get something from the closet without waking them. The flatscreen tv is a nice size, and the bathroom was clean and attractive. I think many people are accustomed to luxurious beds and bedding at home, and hotels often are not as nicely equipped as your home might be. I find that to be true of most hotels I stay at and it was true here as well. The bed was nice. But not as nice or as comfortable as my bed at home. I think the pillows were feather (or down & feather) and I missed my all-down pillows that are much more comfortable. The bathroom was nice, shower was great, and the bidet and heated toilet seat are nice touches. Counter space is very limited, so getting ready & putting on makeup was a juggling act with products. Plenty of towels were provided, although those also are not as nice as those I have at home & were a bit rough. Turndown service in the evening was nice to get bottled water and would have been even better had it included chocolates, cookies, or something like that. The standout feature is the on site food, which we ordered via room service a few times. Without a doubt this was the best room service food I've had yet. Within 20-25 min of ordering, no matter what time, a beautiful trolley showed up with food that the chef must have plated just moments before. The first night I ordered a burger and fries, not expecting much, but it could not have been better. So later in the week we didn't hesitate to order room service again. If I come back to New York again I would eat at the restaurant even if I stayed at another hotel. The concierge was very helpful with reservations, etc, and the location is perfect - just around the corner from Times Square and the GMA studio. This was my first time at the Chatwal and I loved it! First and foremost the staff is outstanding. We felt very welcome from the moment we entered the hotel. We were met with beautiful smiles and beautiful people. I have to give a special shout-out to Mr. Manpreet Kochar, the assistant front desk manager, he was excellent at his job. His professionalism definitely carried over to his staff. The decor is fabulous: it is an interesting mix of classy old-time interjected with modern comforts. Well done. The lobby is NY cool, the downstairs bar is Mad Men classic style and the Lion's Den is def a classic Ny look - RED leather. In the elevator waiting area is a quaint "reading" room set up; fun. IMO the rooms were pretty large for NY. We had a double room with an awesome tub in the bathroom. The bathroom also boats a TOTO bidet toilet with heated seating and a television in the mirror. Everything you could possibly need is there but if you are missing anything just call and they will be there in record time to help. There was more than enough closet space and storage in the dresser, turndown service was great, the butler did a great job ironing my dresses and the complimentary red wine (for my birthday) was just divine. :) The interesting thing was based on the price level and the layout (feel) of the place you would not expect such a warm staff. I almost felt like I was not in NY. I could go on and on about so much more...like our little romp to PHD (Penthouse Dream) that was recommended by Mr. Kochar (It was fun!!) but then this review would never end. All I can say is try it. PS: We had heat that worked perfect, the WIFi was pretty good (I am an IT person), can't speak on breakfast since we did not eat there but IF there is indeed a minimum...policy is policy; there are about 1.5 million other options in walking distance. Very poor customer service. I booked the hotel with my credit card for my wife and proceeded to call the hotel and speak with a representative to note that my wife would be checking into the hotel. The employee said it wouldn't be an issue and made note of my wife's name on my reservation so she could check in. on the day of check-in, The hotel employees did not allow my wife to check in and we're very disrespectful and rude. never again! read more

First, we had to search for our transportation car upon arrival. Driver stayed in the car while we searched for him. Second, hotel has plumbing issues. Water backs up in tub while taken shower. If you leave the hot water running longer than 2 minutes, you start hearing a loud annoying noise. Hotel and transportation not accommodating if you need to make changes. I had high hopes for this place as it comes with a butler service. That's why I chose it for a special occasion - my bachelorette party. A total of six of us flew in from San Francisco. However, things took a nose dive as soon as we arrived. I got there first, handed over gifts to the front desk staff, and asked that they give one each to my girlfriends upon check-in, as a "welcome to my bachelorette party" favor. They did that alright - but, they failed to mention that the gift came from ME. So my friends all thought it was a complimentary gift from the hotel itself...and I had to explain. So yes, frustration, from the very start. And it got worse from there. As the rooms weren't ready for check in, they had to hold our luggage as we went shopping for the day. When we returned in the late afternoon, they had placed the suitcases in our suites, but managed to LOSE ONE OF THE GIFTS already. They made an effort to locate it but never succeeded. Two days later, after I checked out, one of the hotel managers did email me to follow up and offer to buy a replacement gift - but she NEVER DID until I reminded her again a week later, even though I was away in Europe. Seriously, I despise having to babysit when *I'm* the one paying for a service. Now, let's talk about the "butler" service. Let's just say among other things, our butlers told us they couldn't get us cupcakes even though later on we discovered there's a Magnolia's Cupcakes literally two blocks away from the hotel. Simply put, I don't understand how their butler service was any better than a typical hotel concierge...in fact, it seemed worse. In all fairness, they did do a few things right as well, such as 1. steaming my evening gown and 2. working out a kink with the spa downstairs (which, by the way, you should skip altogether. It didn't feel "lux" at ALL). But then again, at the prices I paid, I EXPECTED excellent, professional service - and what we received was anything but. I don't mind places charging $$$$ as long as the service can match it, but the Chatwal utterly failed at that. It felt like I paid for good champagne but got beer instead. A word to the management team - train your staff! Or pay top dollars to get the professionals who already know what they're doing. Axel, you have no shame! Not only did you not "proactively" look for me to address my concerns, when I met you in the lobby you were being very evasive. I specifically had to ask you who you were what was your capacity several times when you blindly offered your help as I was leaving and I was waiting for my towncar to the airport in the lobby! Furthermore when I asked you as to why you had not tried to contact me or remedy some of the shortfalls, your less then truthful answer was that you didn't know who I was and you assumed (that prefix is a good word for you) that I wanted to be anonymous!!! Like many other reviewers have suggested Axel, you don't care. Be honest with yourself and your employer and let them know you're best served put to pasture. You were rude, you were obnoxious and you were condescending. There is no room for debate here as you have no right being in a service industry. The attitude starts with you and goes all the way to your racist concierge and callus room service server. Lastly I have you know that I specifically complained about the room I was in the first night I checked in and I was told that I had no options even after I mentioned that I would gladly pay any additional charges. If you're an SPG member looking for a higher end option to use your points at, I'm not sure I can recommend the Chatwal based on a 50% Premium over the W. It's a great, luxury boutique hotel, but I'm not sure it's worth the premium. Here's some quick thoughts: - Japanese Toilet Seat in a pretty impressive bathroom - Weak Breakfast Benefit for Platinums - Great bar to grab a drink at on two - Negatives: Hard European beds (not Heavenly or W Beds), Thins Walls & "Butler Service" that's underwhelming compared to the St. Regis This property somewhat reminded me of the Blackstone in Chicago in terms of being modern luxury with some historic undertones. My favorite (chain) luxury property in NYC is still the Conrad in Battery Park. read more

My husband and I booked a one night stay for our anniversary after having to cancel our original trip due to my being in a car accident which limited my mobility. We thought it would be fun to make the most of it and book a room in a luxurious hotel, order room service and watch movies together. Unfortunately, the tv service was awful and kept cutting out every 2-5 minutes saying 'weak or no signal'. The front desk told us nothing could be done and that they would comp us for any movies we rented. This would have been great if the movies didn't cut out for minutes at a time. Hugely disappointing service, king room wasn't even impressive and the restaurant was empty every time we visited. Spend your time and money at the St. Regis, an actual luxury hotel. read more

NEW YORK CITY: I am with SPG and found this place through their site. I had medium-high expectations and they were exceeded: 1. The front desk staff were very courteous and pleasant and checked me in very fast 2. Upon arriving at my floor, a cleaning staff member was vacuuming the floor. Upon seeing me he immediately stopped, killed the vacuum, smiled and greeted me. Nice. 3. The room is gorgeous. The bathroom exquisite. A little dark, terrific bed, suede walls, ample closet space and a beautiful view. 4. Turn down service gave me chocolates and a personalized note 5. They helped me out quickly in the morning for my airport getaway. Fully enjoyed my stay. read more

What a genuinely lovely hotel! It's located in the heart of Manhattan within easy walking distance of Time Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center and more. The staff is absolutely perfect, charming and offer impeccable service. The butler service is top notch, and the entire staff strives to take care of your every need before you even notice you need something. When we went to breakfast in the incredibly delicious Lamb's Club dinning room, the maid service had already serviced our room before we came back from breakfast. We were greeted by name from each of the staff each time we came through the lobby, and every person at the hotel was helpful and offered great advice on places to eat, directions to attractions, where to find the subway station, etc. The room was sublime! From the heated toilet seat to the turn down service in the evening, no detail is overlooked. The rooms feature leather and suede covered walls and the most decadent bathroom! The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in at a hotel, and the linens are silky soft and don't smell like bleach. I can't say enough good things about The Chatwal. Do yourself a favor and spoil yourself with a stay in this treasure. It's a perfect hotel and the staff is the most wonderful group of service-minded people, happy to help make your stay a cherished memory. read more
