What a genuinely lovely hotel! It's located in the heart of Manhattan within easy walking distance of Time Square, Broadway, Rockefeller Center and more. The staff is absolutely perfect, charming and offer impeccable service. The butler service is top notch, and the entire staff strives to take care of your every need before you even notice you need something. When we went to breakfast in the incredibly delicious Lamb's Club dinning room, the maid service had already serviced our room before we came back from breakfast. We were greeted by name from each of the staff each time we came through the lobby, and every person at the hotel was helpful and offered great advice on places to eat, directions to attractions, where to find the subway station, etc. The room was sublime! From the heated toilet seat to the turn down service in the evening, no detail is overlooked. The rooms feature leather and suede covered walls and the most decadent bathroom! The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in at a hotel, and the linens are silky soft and don't smell like bleach. I can't say enough good things about The Chatwal. Do yourself a favor and spoil yourself with a stay in this treasure. It's a perfect hotel and the staff is the most wonderful group of service-minded people, happy to help make your stay a cherished memory. read more

In NYC for 2 days every other week, I've tried almost all the SPG properties and was excited for a new option - Chatwal. The staff was very nice, the location was decent, and the room was very luxurious but in a contemporary way (unlike St Regis). The bathrooms are quite high-tech with a TV in the mirror but the newest innovation was a bathroom remote control to customize your experience. The Spa was not bad either - I had a 60 minute massage, which was on par with other average massages I've had, not top decile but good. read more

I think it's a 3 star but someone less critical than me may argue that. The rooms are smaller than average and the staff is snobbier than I've come across in higher end hotels. Their chocolates are only given upon arrival but it would be more pleasant if the hotel gave it every day instead of charging an exorbitant fee for a small box of 4 chocolates from some obscure Brooklyn chocolate store. The fee per night night can be better spent at the Westin if you're an SPG member. At the Westin I felt the service was better than this hotel. Nice location and amazing bath but the room is really small. The housekeeping is mediocre but the hotel staff are rude. Very close to times square and the hotel is quiet. read more

This weekend hubby and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided to revisit The Chatwal hotel. We had been there 5 years ago for a celebratory splurge weekend and loved the space and service. Apparently during the 5 years, much has changed. The space needs updating--it's dark and a bit dated. The high end auto toilet didn't work--we called about it and no one fixed it. The people in the room next door were loud and when I spoke to the front desk they said it was because the doors didn't properly close. We continued to hear their regular conversation which was annoying. It hit way worse, as they must have gone out and left their barking, howling dog. I called the front (useless) desk yet again and was told it was a dog (thanks Captain Obvious) and they couldn't do anything. So sleeping in abruptly ended for us. All in all, the apologies piled on and nothing was ever addressed. Not a drink, not a price reduction--nothing. For the hundreds of dollars I strongly suggest booking a Hampton Inn--the service is better and at least you know what to expect. read more

Not even sure how this place would get below 4 stars but...just completed my stay at the hotel. Very clean comfy beds with fabulous service from the front desk staff to the maid service. Loved the bathroom and the size of the deluxe double...took a bath fit for a queen and enjoyed all the perks of being so close to Times Square and 5th Avenue area. I was here for work, so not sure if I could afford it on my own...but it's always nice to splurge if you can! I'd definitely stay again!!! read more

I was excepting much better for a boutique hotel witch charges you 600$ for a room. 1/it start with a room of heating doesn't work for 3 days 2/ then we went the breakfast that you can use only if you pay 65$ each person and you can't seat only for a coffee so you have to stay in the lobby where is freezing because of the doors opening every 5 min 3/the wifi is impossible to use even if you want to want to pay extra to get a faster connection 4/we went to the restaurant upstairs to have breakfast.a nice gentleman called Garry asking him to seat for a coffee told us that the breakfast is closed and we have to seat on the bar. I have been very fortunate to travel much of the world staying in both some of the finest (including other SPG hotels) and some of the most rustic accommodations, but I've never come across a worse/more rude front desk staff. Listing the positives first, the hotel is admittedly a beautifully decorated well thought out property and the head butler Brandon was fantastic. Unfortunately, I left the hotel utterly disappointed and completely enraged by the front desk staff and management. When booking a junior suite two months out, I requested one with a terrace and asked for an early check-in depending on availability. Two weeks out I called to reconfirm the request and when the hotel called me two days out I repeated it for a third time. During check-in, my request was once again relayed, though unfortunately a terrace suite wasn't available that day nor could I check in early... no big deal. However, I was told I could move rooms the following day to have the terrace to which I agreed to. Later that day when our room was ready (received no phone call btw even though we were informed we would be called), it was once again communicated we would like to change rooms to one with the terrace the next day. The next day when I called in the front desk staff had no idea what I was talking about, but said they would look into it. I called back 20 minutes later when we had to leave for a tour and were told they didn't have an answer yet, but the manager would call me. Once again, no phone call was received. Upon return to the hotel, I was told they were very sorry, but the room wasn't available. Of course we had not unpacked due to the promised room transfer and was quite frustrated at the huge lack of communication especially by such an expensive/highly rated hotel. Unfortunately, I did not have time to continue the discussion as we needed to change and head to a show, but informed the manager I expected him to do something to right their wrong of over promising, not communicating between staff members and not ever calling/following up with me. I was offered $50 to the spa, which I thought was an absolutely joke, but the manager told me he would personally call informing me what he could do. Once again, a phone call was promised and never received that evening. That night upon return to the hotel ended up being my bubbling point as there was a new and extremely rude girl working the desk who essentially told me I was lying and no request for a room was every made, meaning no phone calls before arriving, no communication upon check in, etc. I proceeded to go off on her and her manager who finally realized they were wrong and apologized. But guess what... nothing was ever done by them. Being in the customer service business you need to control your clients expectations and if they have simply told me the room wasn't available upon check in then no big deal. Instead the hotel caused a huge ordeal as they lacked any resemblance of customer service or professionalism. I would never ever recommend this hotel and the frustration/stress their front desk caused essentially ruined my girlfriend and my trip to NYC. Phone calls, follow up, communication, apologies and going out of your way to make a frustrated customer happy goes a long way, but this practice is apparently not practiced by this hotel. read more

This place was a total letdown. Most websites, etc. rate it as a five star. It is clearly NOT a five star. Yes, I will admit they did a great job renovating it and paying attention to small details, however, the management staff is not even close to what you would find in a 3 star hotel, much less 5 star. What they consider a suite is actually two rooms adjoined by a tiny hallway. (separate doors) Disclosure: We had an issue with the nightshift housekeeper going through a piece of luggage. This was no mistake, she left a facial towel in a piece of our luggage. Under clothing! When we reported this, a mgr came to our room to defend the staff. No apology, no explanation. She was argumentative, combative and down right rude. This is what you get when you hire $10 an hour mgrs to run a "five star hotel". Some of the things she said to me were: "I don't know how often you stay in hotels, but turn down service is included in your stay." FYI: (I have never found a facial towel in my luggage during a turn down service) She also said: " I know the customer is always supposed to be right, but...." And, the kicker! When I turned my head to look at my guest in astonishment, the "mgr" said to me "Mam, are you listening to me?" This went on for another ten minutes until I excused her and went to bed in shock. I thought the price was pretty fair at $750 for a two bedroom suite. But when you think about it, we could have stayed somewhere better known for service for less. read more

Conde Naste's 2018 Travel Reader's Choice Awards puts the Chatwal at #1 as far as New York hotels so my wife and I had to give it a try during a weekend in which we came to see Jeff Daniels in To Kill a Mocking Bird on Broadway (...which was amazing!!!). It's located steps away from the broadway theaters and Time Square so everything is within walking distance, which means it can get a bit hectic too. Nevertheless, the hotel was always a quiet luxurious exodus from the madness of midtown. We were always greeted by name and with kind smiles. Waters were offered upon returning form our run in Central Park too, which was a nice touch. The spa and gym are small but stylish but our masseuse paid attention to the tight spots. The bar in the lobby and on the second floor were equally posh and of course, the hotel is home to Iron Chef Zakarian's Lamb's Club. Room service comes from the Lamb's Club too, so when we ordered a burger at midnight, it was indeed epic. We stayed in the Heritage suite, which is actually two rooms combined together (901/902). It seems a little odd at first, but it was nice to have two full bathrooms so that we didn't feel cramped and we also had a separate seating area that was so comfortable that I took a nap in the middle of the day. The room also has this funny little closet with a microwave, sink and stovetop! Interesting use of space but pure New York in my opinion. It's a pricey stay but what can I say? I liked it a lot and there isn't anything else I could have asked for. read more

As a platinum SPG member for years I was very excited when my dear friend selected The Chatwal as the spot for her bachelorette party. This hotel is very pricey and claims to come with a butler. First off, the room reservations were mixed up, the front desk lost the welcome presents from the bride and then the alleged "butler" did not help with any of our simple requests. For the price of this place you can stay anywhere in NYC. And, you would think they would treat loyal SPG members better. Accommodations were luxurious and service was great. Only one negative. As I came in from LA, I was on West Coast hours. Each morning I woke up at 11 am, so I missed my (complimentary) continental breakfast. On Saturday morning, I explained breakfast situation to the hostess, who told me that she could not help me. I asked for a cup of coffee and was charged 8 dollars. Yeah, I know it is only 8 bucks, but it is the principle of the matter. Spent a ton of points to stay there. Before I booked the hotel through the Marriott app, I called and asked which class of room had bathtubs. The person at the desk said all of the king rooms. So I booked a king room. We arrived at 1 o'clock in the morning after two long flights through three times zones, and my wife wanted to take a bath before we went to sleep. The room had no bath. The front desk told me that that was the room that I had, and that was the room that I was stuck with. The window opened out into a dark and gray alley with no sunlight whatsoever. Room was small and narrow. We slept in until around 9:30, and my wife wanted coffee when she woke up. I called downstairs and asked where the coffee was in the room, and they said I had to come downstairs to get it or order room service. I hoped to sleep another hour, but got up, took a shower, shaved, dressed, and went downstairs to discover that the coffee had been put away. There was no coffee. It was five minutes after 10 AM. Five minutes after 7 AM in the Pacific Time zone, where our biological clocks were living. We left an hour later, checking out two nights early, and went to a different Marriott hotel that was booked for us by my calling the marquis service center. The fellow on the phone told me he had heard complaints about overrated, overpriced hotels and was glad to help. When a business lies to me or misinforms me twice, I am not inclined to give them a third chance. This hotel has the pretensions of elegance, like wood paneling, but their guest service sucks, particularly given the inflated prices they charge. read more

Don't be fooled by the photos -- the rooms (at least the one we were in) are Manhattan small. They are indeed very high-tech, but that comes at a cost: When we arrived, the telephone's touch screen was acting up, the remote control to work the drapes was not functioning, and the Japanese-style electronic bidet toilet wasn't working. The Wifi service didn't connect immediately -- so, within the first hour of our stay, we had three calls in to engineering. Also, the climate control is iffy -- it certainly works, but to balance the temperature, it will often blow air conditioning if the room warms up too much ... and when it's 20 degrees outside and you're cold, having cold air blown on you isn't swell. Lastly, the shower is beautiful, but the water splashes onto the floor EVERYWHERE; it's not particularly use-friendly. On the plus side ... the staff is incredibly attentive and super friendly. I never use hotel concierge services, but did find The Chatwal's concierge to be excellent and highly useful. Although we stayed on a Travelocity Top Secret Hotel rate, we were never treated as second-class citizens who booked a "special deal" ... they treated us with great hospitality. Back on the downside, I could hear almost every word of the phone conversations the loud-talking guest next door was having, and the mornings are loud thanks to slamming doors. I'd stay here again, but for the room I had, I would feel anything over $250 a night would be too much. For the price I did pay, I've had MUCH nicer rooms in New York ... and also much worse ones. What really sets The Chatwal apart is the great attitude of its staff. But whether it truly classifies as "luxury" or just "high-end" is really open to debate. Please ignore the negative reviews as they haven't stayed here. I don't know where to begin but the rooms are amazing. High tech meets high sheik. As an avid tech and fashion junkie, I can't recommend more! We loved the warm welcome and courtesy from Brandon, the head butler who chilled our champagne. Our suite with a large terrace was very quiet, with elegant masculine decor in leather and suede. I cannot speak for the typical rooms, which seem smaller in the picture, but with similar decor. The bathroom was fantastic including rain shower, Asprey shampoo and soaps, and the subtle but amazing tech. Simply put, this is our new 'go to' hotel in Manhattan. Close to Times Square, the park, shopping, but in a quiet enough section. read more

I've stayed a couple of places in NYC, including the Plaza, and the Chatwal is my favorite place ever. The location is close to the theater district and Times Square, but not in a bad way. The rooms, we were on the floor of the Barrymore suite, were gorgeous, well-appointed, and quiet. The staff is ridiculously good. Special shout out to Sakura and Ali who were so engaged and helpful. Also, when Uber fell through, we ordered the house car for a ride to Lincoln center with no issue. Seriously, such service. Love this place. read more

I'm sorry to say that I can't give this hotel a thumbs up. It gets 2-stars because of its ideal location and the rooms are nice. But we experienced problem after problem: 1. Hotel room wasn't ready when we arrived at noon (fair enough). We left our luggage there and they said they would call us when our room was ready. They never called. 2. No ice machine anywhere in the hotel. You call the front desk and wait 25 minutes. 3. No useable refrigerator in the room. 4. iPad to work the lights and thermostat. Very cool, right? It didn't work. 5. Remote control to work the curtains. Very cool again, right? They opened less than half way. 6. We placed the service the room sign on the door. Four hours later we came back to a note under the door that they couldn't clean the room because the privacy light was on. What? Turns out they ignore the service the room sign. No idea why they have them. Instead they look at a privacy light we can turn off and on. Ours, it turns out, would turn off! 7. No iron or ironing board in the room. That was another 25 minute wait. In a world where people lack food and shelter, these "issues" are silly. But why then pay $660 a night for this kind of service? read more

I thought my stay here was just okay. The decor and overall feel of the hotel was just not really my style - think dark wood walls, intimidating presence...a bit too serious & hoity-toity for my taste. Service was also just okay. We arrived maybe 30 minutes before check-in time and they said our room wasn't ready, which was fine! But our room ended up not being ready for another 2-3 hours, which was a little annoying. But we were upgraded to a suite, so I guess I can't complain! But the suite was weeeeeird. It was basically two separate rooms, connected with a small hallway. So we had two full baths (which was nice) but only one of the rooms had a bed, while the other was just seating. It was nice, but small. I guess that's NYC standards but when you pay this much for a room, I would expect it to be a little (or a lot) more spacious. The bathrooms were cool though - it had a TV built inside the mirror! And the shower was amazing. Location can't be beat though. Right off of Times Square, but tucked away enough where you don't get the noise that you experience in the hotels right on Times Square. I might stay here again if it just wasn't so expensive...(or if I thought the price was justified)! read more

This review is for the Spa. I came here due to a Daily Candy Deal. $85 for a half hour facial and a manicure. Great deal. I was a bit skeptical though when I made the appointment, they confirmed, but then they called me back two hours later and told me they actually could not accommodate me on Sun but could see me Tues afternoon. I explained that I have a job during the work week and that was not acceptable. I was pretty annoyed.. but they finally called back a couple hours later and said they actually were able to accommodate afterall. When I arrived, I was shown to the ground floor and greeted by the friendly staff. It's a pretty small spa with just a few treatment rooms. The "lounge" was in fact 2 comfortable lounge chairs and 3 separate extra large bathrooms complete with a steam shower. The pool was a plunge pool with a hot tub in the corner. All facilities were modern/updated and clean. The manicure was standard (and hygienic as they give you the file/tools afterwards to bring home) but the "express" facial was definitely a stand-out. I regretted not just going there for a full facial. Overall, I would return. It may be a "small production" / hotel spa but it's only a few blocks from home and nothing disappointed. It's a shame though their prices are extraordinary high without a groupon like deal. read more

The staff seemed overall great. The car service was very helpful when I needed to get to a dinner my first evening in NYC. The rooms were the smallest that I have ever stayed at within the NYC area - even to the point where I felt a bit claustrophobic. Our view was of a small back alley/other building with 2 liter sodas on its railings. Very little counter space within the room. I had to use the full length mirror in the small closet for my makeup in the morning (sat on the floor - very awkward). I felt as though the f & b options could have been more (everything goes through the restaurant there) so you really just have one option. I would definitely shop around before returning. read more

Wow! I'm a faithful Starwood customer and usually frequent W, St Regis and Luxury Collection brands. My partner and I checked in for a weekend here recently and were blown away by the style and service. Our room was the largest I've ever seen in the city - even compared to a W suite. Suede covered walls and a remote control Japanese style toilet were two of the fun details we liked. Service was nice and attentive. Stayed here for a weekend in August. What can I say about this hotel? It's extremely clean, conveniently located to Times Square, Broadway and great shopping. The staff are extremely warm and welcoming. The room we stayed in was the size of what you'd expect from a hotel located in a central part of a major city, similar to what you'd find in London or Hong Kong. That is, it's small, but comfortable, especially if you won't be spending much time in the hotel room itself. Laurels: -Wonderful and friendly staff -luxurious bathroom -lots of storage space should you need it -conveniently located in mid-town Darts: -Loud closing doors -the bed was a bit too soft for my liking Would I stay again? I don't care for hotels that feel akin to a big box store. Simple elegance, tastefully done, with professional staff who gets it, make you feel like even the simple conversation is important. As an update SPG back then made it right by refunding the cost paid for this room. It took about 9 months, but having email proof and pictures helped make my case. I used that money to make up for the bad experience to the bride and groom. Original review: Terrible hotel. Broken dirty rooms and dirty musty, smelly, and dark hall ways. Rude service. Lying management. Unethical business dealings. I was provided a room significantly inferior to what I paid for. It was a surprise gift for a wedding, so I only learned of the wrong room the next morning when I arrived to meet with the bride and groom. I have email proof of what I booked and then what the bride and groom received. Was promised 2 bathrooms and 2 rooms, but received 1 of each, and the bathroom & stereo were broken. During the next morning: I was called a liar multiple times, and the manager was annoyed after I provided emails with proof of what he was calling me a liar for. Took 4 hours to get ice in the room at 7:30am on a Sunday morning; I was yelled at over the phone (when asking for ice for the 4th time) and was told (in a yelling manner) that the hotel was very busy. It was Saturday, June 18th (not busy at all, not a soul in the lobby). The front desk was not doing anything at all, because there wasn't anyone around! Probably very low occupancy rate as well. The staff was rude and failed to provide extensively pre-arranged, promised, and confirmed basic items (champagne glasses, fruit bows, and food trays), all this proven by email. Provided the champagne glasses 15 minutes before check-out after 4 calls to room service, 3 calls to front desk, 2 calls to SPG complaint line, and emails forwarded to the manager on site of pre-arranged and confirmed items in the room (champagne glasses, bowls, silverware). But before emails were provided as proof, the hotel claimed that I was lying. The management was so dishonest that they even claimed this in their email responses. It seems that they did not think that I would spend the time to fight for fairness. I had to provide call logs and emails as proof of extensive arrangements. The hotel ignored this proof and continued to make up unreasonable points in order to not refund the money. Both SPG & AMEX have been researching the matter. As for the room in more details: The hotel provided a broken room, significantly inferior to what I paid. During a dispute with SPG & Amex, the hotel kept insisting that I booked the cheapest room - yet another lie. I am a GOLD SPG member and I paid half cash half points for this more than $800 suite room. In the advertising and email confirmation I was promised a suite with 2 rooms and 2 bathrooms, but the room provided had 1 room, 1 bathroom (which was broken) and a lot of lies. The hotel: old furniture, dirty hall ways, musty / moldy smell. Big fail for SPG. I will report the Chatwal to BBB for unethical dealings and lying, since I have their lies in writing, and also lots of proof in writing. The place sucks. I booked a $1,500 a night suite and recieved a room they called the "living area". Than down the hallway we are shown the "bedroom". I have stayed in enough suites to know that this was total bs. This wasnt a suite it was two rooms (not even adjoining). How romantic for me to be telling my wife. I'm going to go to the other room and hang out while you get ready. I brought this to the attention of the manager and their answer was there is nothing they can do that is their policy. Needless to stay I was ripped off cause they were deceitful and liars. I recommend any hotel other than this one. read more

Found the Chatwal as part of the Starwood SPG Luxury Collection.. Beautiful property on W 44nd just off Times Square. The location can be a plus or a minus depending on the reason your in the city... more on that later. Interesting Vib to the place.... not quite hipster... not quite Gatsby.... not quite speakeasy... But a blend of all that works... The staff was excellent... doormen, front desk, and housekeeping ...spot on ! The room small , but standard by NYC comparison.Well appointed with one of the most unique and useful closets i have seen The bathroom was gorgeous. All the walls are beveled mirrors and a huge rainfall shower. and the heated bidet/toilet combo.....well you have to experience it .... Room service breakfast was good, not great... but good. Drinks at the Lambs Club off the lobby were well crafted and served with a smile..... go to the second floor bar area.... much less hectic.... . My only complaint is the difficultly in getting a taxi or even a Uber on W 44th. The property is located on a one way leading away from Times Square. In the evening it is very difficult for any vehicle to make it past the hotel. Most times we walked to or were dropped off at 6th ave and W44 and walked the half block. Not the hotels fault.... the doormen must get extremely frustrated standing in the street trying to hail a cab of inpatient guests. So if your in town for Times Square / Theater District fun or business close by... great close walking location But if your planning on lots of short trips by car from here.... well.....give yourself a few extra minutes read more

Beautiful hotel in a convenient Midtown location. I was here for an advisory board meeting and was delighted they chose a SPG Luxury Collection hotel. We loved the Art Deco decor and touches, the staff was professional and polished and the rooms were just lovely. This place costs a pretty penny, but it is worth the splurge while visiting NYC! read more

We have traveled to many parts of the world, and generally like to stay at beautiful hotels. This was no exception. We came to The Chatwal and were not disappointed. In fact, to the contrary, the hotel and its staff exceeded our expectation. The hotel offers exceptional stay with excellent service. While this hotel is not cheap (then again no hotels are cheap in New York City), it offers incredible value, comfort, and luxury well worth its price.
