First of all let me say that this hotel does not even deserve a single star! The staff is deceptive and dishonest and the management is incompetent and does not have the capacity nor experience to manage problems related to the guests needs. If it was my business they would be all fired on the spot! We checked into the hotel and came back after our dinner reservations to an 80 degree room. After attempts to set the thermostat and realizing that the temperature is not adjusting we call the front desk and ask them for help. That's when they admitted that they have been having problems with their AC unit and are "working on it". Unacceptable. Why weren't we informed at the time of check in!? It's not that there is a scarcity of hotels in NYC! We would've find another. Now here is the kicker, they offered us a fan and some ice water, lol!! Really!?? That's gonna make it right!?? A fan!? I'm paying for a 5 star hotel to try to sweat with a fan!? Next time please let your guest know that you have an AC PROBLEM before they check in and Let them decide whether they want to stay at your hotel or not. At 12:30 AM how are we supposed to find a room at a different hotel? Your technique is very deceptive dishonest and insulting. Not worth your five stars not even a single star. And most definitely not Starwood quality. You put a shame on the name Starwood. Will never come back again. read more

Although the rooms in this hotel are beautiful, the hotel is a disappointing waste of money. The lobby is garish and dark. The restaurant looks like a middle American diner, complete with red upholstery, bad lighting and too many tables pushed too close together. The second floor bar is cold and uninviting. The service is cursory and slow but not quite rude. The front desk staff has little if any interest in service and the manager, if she can be located, is indifferent. This hotel is in the same category as the St. Regis, which is like saying a Ferrari is the same as a Chevy because they are both cars. If you are looking for a comparable alternative to a Holiday Inn, try the Chatwal. If you are looking for a fine hotel, don't come near this place. read more

First let me start by saying that the front of the hotel looks nothing like the photo, and the rooms are so much smaller in person. It was very hot when we entered our room so I turned on the AC, after some time we realized it was not getting cooler so I called the Front desk.. although friendly upon check in they didn't mention that the air conditioning had been broken for the past 48 hrs and they have people working around the clock to fix the issue .. I understand that things happen but I should have received a phone call to either change my dates or they should have offered me another property.. very disappointed in this SPG category 7.. this rating should be changed read more

This review is for the spa @ The Chatwal Hotel. I bought a Gilt City coupon for a massage and had a really good experience. I don't think I'd pay full price to come here, but for a discounted price I definitely got my hour of heaven. Service was very attentive and the massage itself was really excellent and therapeutic. My masseuse was knowledgeable and had really good hands. You can use the facilities including the pool and hot tub and its a really quaint tucked away oasis that you can enjoy in the middle of the hustle and bustle of NYC. I'd come back, but only if there was a special promotion going on, otherwise prices are inflated. read more

The Chatwal has become my NYC base since it opened. I'm there once/month and the staff is warm, friendly and professional. Only 70+ rooms so they can get to know their guests. Brandon and Lance have gone out of their way to be helpful a number of times. I also have a secret crush on one of the Lamb's Club hostesses who I won't embarrass by naming her. Rooms are very comfortable and a bit larger than most midtown properties. The bathrooms are luxurious and I especially enjoy the rooms with a terrace -- a luxury in Manhattan. Great closet space and extraordinary butler service. The Lamb's Club is a superb hotel restaurant and the lounge is very active with a great vibe. All this and a fabulous location, too. read more

This stay started with spa treatments at the Red Door onsite. It is small but very personal. You get a shower room and a small safe for valuables. My spa treatments were wonderful and checkin was a breeze. My room which was the smallest suite was nothing like any room I've ever stayed in. I was completely Wowed. Room was very clean and everything worked. Above all it was cozy though luxury. The restaurant, the Lamb Chop is also cozy with a come in from the cold feel. And the food was absolutely delicious. My husband and I stayed with our two year old daughter at the Chatwal in New York City. We were excited for our daughter to experience New York and wanted a hotel that was walking distance to the Big Apple's many attractions. The Chatwal is just a block from Times Square but is a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. As soon as the doorman opens the doors into the quiet, air conditioned lobby, you are transported to a calm, relaxed atmosphere to unwind from a busy day of meetings and/or sightseeing. The rooms are quite large for NYC, well appointed with exquisite linens, and offer plenty of storage. They are actually silent and can be made very dark with blackout curtains. The room lights dim with the touch of a button by the bed. Next to each side of the bed is a convenient reading light. The bathrooms are sparkling (literally, the marble has sparkles in it!), the rain shower is spa-like, and the toilet seats are heated! But where the Chatwal really shines is with its staff. I can't say enough good things about how accommodating and friendly they are. You are greeted warmly each time you step into the lobby. A big heartfelt thanks to Michael and Manpreet for making friends with our daughter - they made our stay so memorable! We left one of our daughter's stuffed animals in the room when we went out one night and the housekeeping staff tucked him into bed for the night. She was so happy to see that he was taken care of! We will definitely return to this wonderful hotel! read more

The Director of the Spa reached out to me to correct the problem. They had used a Sally Hansen nail polish which she assured me they don't normally use. I went back to get my manicure/pedicure and they did a great job. The customer service was truly incredible, and I would definitely return. read more

Management responded graciously to my initial rough experience and upgraded me to the next room size up which was very nice. Service and food at the lambs club restaurant has also been excellent. Upshot is, do not book a superior room here, but it seems like anything else is quite nice. read more

Arriving in town from palm beach for one night for a once in a lifetime experience (Bruce on Broadway) we had limited options since it was a holiday weekend. We chose this hotel based on availability and location. It's small and quaint and has a real vintage old New York authentic feel to it. The basic rooms and just that, the sparkly bathrooms being the highlight. We upgraded to a two room suite and wow it was nice! I might remodel my bathroom just like it! The tv in the mirror and the black glittery tiles felt swanky and unique. The check in and valet and local shuttle service (red benz) was great. Sakura at the front desk was the absolute sweetest clerk I've encountered and I travel a ton. If you are in town to see a show this is a sure bet and a better choice than a big generic chain hotel. Next time we will dine in the on site restaurant by that fireplace for sure. And there will be a next time ! read more

This is a great boutique hotel located just off Times Square. Part of the Starwood Luxury Collection, the rooms are spacious by NY standards and quiet if you ask not to face the street. Service is excellent and the restaurant is very good especially for breakfast. The rooms can be a tad dark in the W style but there are enough lights in the room to counter that "mood" if you need to work. Only real criticisms are the absence of any real fitness center and many of the showers have that half glass door that I hate because there is no way not to flood the bathroom floor. Small points but enough to keep me from giving the property a 5 star rating. Still, one of my go to hotels in NY so I would not let those small points deter you from giving them a try. The bar in the lobby is also exquisite but closes up way to early for NY. read more

We got of to a rocky start on our first night but everything worked out perfectly! The staff was amazing and the hotel itself is a work of art. The food was great. Room service was amazing! We were not prepared to be so close to Times Square which was a little hectic. The mini bar had a nice selection as well. Be prepared to catch your uber/taxi on 6th and 44th. It's hard for them to get thru the mess near Times Square. The staff was superior in my opinion. Will defiantly be back here! read more

Worth every penny! I have never experienced customer service and professionalism like I did at the Chatwal. My fiancé and I chose the Chatwal to stay at for our wedding in Central Park. The staff made us feel welcomed and truly special. From dining recommendations to the red Mercedes that took me to Central Park, the Chatwal brought luxury to our very special occasion. And, I can't write this review without mentioning our bellhop, Peter. Peter was outstanding in every way and took amazing care of us. I stayed here for business for a week in the dead of winter in January and I am thoroughly impressed at their level of service and room amenities. I travel extensively for work and get tired of the big chains that treat me nothing more than like a number. Each staff member I came upon was more helpful than the previous. A friend met me in NY for a few nights with her 3 month old daughter and the hotel was well accommodating to the needs of an infant. They had a beautiful crib set in the room with beautiful amenities. As well, they helped us figure out a way to sterilize bottles by providing us an electric tea kettle and a large wine bucket so we did not have to go buy a bottle sterilizer. The room is beautifully appointed and one of the best features for business travelers is COMPLIMENTARY INTERNET!! I can also see myself vacationing here as the rooms are large and the closet space is spacious!! One of the best parts of my trip was dining at the hotel as they serve the BEST burgers in NYC...I had 3 in a time span of a week and I don't often have burgers! The bar was also a great place to entertain clients. The hotel has a POOL!! Even though it is indoors, it is still a pool in their spa to get some laps in. A fabulous hotel with the ultimate experience in comfort customer service! We stayed here for my birthday organized by DH and the staff were all on point with impeccable customer service. Especially note worthy is Nico at the front desk! He was most hospitable, always ready with a smile and such a pleasant personality- such a joy to see every morning! And, he always had treats for the kids! The hotel is really the ultimate luxury experience- the room was fabulous with all amenities though I would have liked to see a fridge as part of the services not something I'd have to request. I mean, if I'm staying at such a hotel I'm not going to need the hot plate, but I might need the fridge! The bathrooms were just fabulous. The choice of tile and fixtures was fabulous. Really beautiful. The tv in the mirror was a nice touch. The only complaint was the bathtub in our suite didn't drain well when using the shower... not a pleasant experience standing in an inch of running shower water... the second shower was fab though The room details were superior too- the closets, the mini bar, the amenities- all top notch!! The hotel's very nice. Service is very good. I booked a deluxe king and was disappointed by the size. The room is set up as though you were on a cruise ship, very efficient. Location is in the theater district. If you walk 100 yards west you are Times Square, controlled chaos with some overflow on your street. Good but not a five star and not worth a premium price. Palace or London NYC or Kitano are a better bet for the money. read more

Not worth the cost, and have advised my colleagues against for business travel. Had stayed at the St Regis the week before for roughly the same rate and found it a much more customer-friendly experience. Pros - lobby is pretty - bed was comfortable - fancy Japanese robo toilet Cons - phone in room didn't work - nobody at front desk when I tried to resolve - couldn't order room service as a result (yes I tried to order room service from the restaurant and they thought I was a kook) - valet downstairs wasn't successful at getting me a cab or car - inconvenient location of outlets in room, not enough at desk Other stuff - ugh Times Square - did I have butler service? We were really looking forward to our long weekend stay at the high end Chatwal but in the end this property disappointed in too many areas. The concierge gets a failing grade having received my email several days in advance but never acknowledging it. When we did arrive and ask about the things we had asked them for help with, they confirmed that they did get the email in advance but hadn't done anything with it. One request was to reserve a brunch table at the American girls cafe - a special request from my daughters, but having sat on this request for almost a week, they now were unable to get a reservation for us. They did try to get a 1PM reservation but made no attempt to find alternate times available. No message was sent to our room with any update as they had promised so we had to go check back with them only to find that they had struck out. Finally we contacted the cafe ourselves and were able to get a reservation. The Hotel has a nice boutique ambiance with a good mix of traditional art deco and a dash of modern. On arrival the staff were friendly and offered their help in any way. The room was nice, the bathroom was very nice but the view was nonexistent with a building that blocks the entire back side of the hotel standing so close that not only was our Terrace useless but it was even hard to tell if it was cloudy or sunny outside until we went right outside to look straight up. Our girls were pretty disappointed and since the hotel was not full I had hoped that as a Starwood Platinum they would upgrade me to something with a bit of a view - we asked. Originally they responded that there was not much they could do but then offered to find something better to move us to the following day. The staff on the following day apparently knew nothing of this and offered no alternative or apology. At this point we decided to check out early and move to another hotel. The staff seemed unconcerned that a guest was leaving early and unhappy. They promptly adjusted my departure date and asked if there was anything else they could do. Didn't stay at the hotel but i still did not have a good experience with the staff. My cell phone fell out of my pocket in a cab, a lady found it and returned it to me when i called my phone she gave me her contact info and where she was staying. She left it at the counter at the hotel where she was staying, the Hotel Chawal in NYC. So as she described my phone was left at the reception desk and i picked it up on 6/11/2011 at a little after 10:45pm. I wanted to thank her, so without asking for her full name i asked the man at the reception desk if i could write a thank you, give her some $$ and put it in an envelope and he could write her name on the envelope and give it to her in the morning. He agreed to help me, so i proceeded to do this, i left her the money and then come to find she never received the money i left. When calling the hotel they said they could not do anything about it since i did not remember the name of the person who helped me and they told me there was nothing they could do without proof someone at the hotel took anything. Needless to say i was disappointed in the hotel, i am not worried about the money itself but more about the fact that the lady that helped me did not get what i left her and someone being honest was ruined by someone elses dishonesty. read more

Stayed here for two nights recently. Went to see a show for my birthday. The room was so quiet, especially for being only a block from Broadway. Except for the usual door slammers, we never heard any neighbors either. The room was dark, but that's part of its design. The decor was really nice, not exactly my taste but nice. Plenty of storage for your stuff. Plenty of outlets for your gadgets. Bring your own water as there wasn't even any in the mini bar. Three TVs, including one hidden behind a mirror in the bathroom. Speaking of bathrooms, this thing was wild! Lots of mirror and chrome. Loved the rainfall shower head, rinses you off in about 2 seconds, none of that water conserving BS that the tree huggers are whining about these days. I don't usually like these kinds of shower heads but I fell in love with this one. I was not adventurous enough to try the bidet, just something about using something like that that strangers have also used. Back to the dark room, I ended up sleeping till 10am one day. The drapes are so good at blocking out light that you could barely tell it was daylight outside. I didn't try the bar or restaurant so I can't speak about them. Every one there was very pleasant to deal with. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay there! read more

As good as a New York hotel can get (and none of them can get that good). I've stayed at the very top-end hotels in NY, including the Pierre and the Palace. This falls in the same category, although it's still a NY hotel meaning your room will probably be facing another room (I literally saw an old woman changing and had to close my shades for her own privacy). The amenities in the room are nice, like heated toilet seat. Service is also really good. Location is HORRIBLE (Times Square) but once you get in, it's a cute sanctuary. read more

I've rated this hotel only one star, mainly because it touts itself so highly and our resulting stay was so dismal. Mind you, if we had received the accommodations and service that we received at The Chatwal, at a Holiday Inn, for maybe ONE FIFTH the price, we would have been fine with it. The Chatwal would have you believe that you will be treated to the "Ultimate in Luxury," but that is so far off the mark, it isn't even funny. Our room had a TV and a DVD player. The only problem was that the DVD player is in the closet disconnected. We had to have first the bellman and then the "engineer" come to hook it up and it still didn't work. To make matters worse, the only place for the DVD player to sit was on our ottoman, with wires strung all over the place. The air conditioning register was aimed squarely at my head when I lie in bed and there was NO WAY to adjust it differently. I had to climb up and wedge a pillow up there to keep the cold blast of air off of my head. The bathroom looked amazing, until anyone used the sink or the shower and then the room looked like a disaster with all the chrome and polished stainless steel. The shower had no dam at the door, so a significant amount of water flowed out into the bathroom. The shower was big enough to hold a party in, but there was no place where one could rest their foot while washing their feet or, in my wife's case, shave her legs. In addition, there was SUBSTANTIAL and unsightly MOLD and MILDEW growing in the shower. I complained the first day about it, but it was NEVER cleaned up during our stay. The Chatwal advertises that guests will receive the services of a "Personal Butler," but in the five days we were there, we NEVER saw or heard from anyone saying that they were our "butler." The closets come with trouser hangers, but the closet is designed in such a way, that you cannot hang trousers in there, without them hitting the floor and I'm not that tall. Upon our arrival, the orchid in our room was wilted and dead. On the third day of our visit, a woman came to our door and replaced the orchid. Why wasn't that done BEFORE we arrived? The exterior door to the hotel is cast bronze and must weigh over 500 pounds. A good portion of the time, it is NOT manned by a doorman. Just try getting that door open while carrying a bunch of packages or bags. It was hard for me and just about impossible for my wife to open with both hands free. One day when we exited the hotel and a doorman was present, we asked for directions to the Hells Kitchen neighborhood. He said he had "no idea" where it was at. As it turns out, the world famous neighborhood is THREE FRIGGING BLOCKS from the hotel. Shouldn't a doorman at an "Ultra Luxury" hotel know something like that? One day we rode the hotel elevator with another couple who were raving about the box of cookies that were waiting for them when they checked in. Their room was smaller than ours, they were staying only two nights and had not booked any special package, and we are Starwood Preferred Guests, but we never got a box of cookies. The Lambs Club is an absolutely gorgeous restaurant. Unfortunately, that's where it ends. We had horrible service, mediocre food and the chairs were some of "THE" most uncomfortable I have ever sat in. I actually wrote all of this in a letter and included PHOTOS, to the Starwood Hotels C.E.O., Fritz Van Paasschen, but I never received ANY satisfaction from his office or from the flunky he turned the matter over to. My wife and I have stayed at five star hotels all over the world. We know "Ultimate Luxury," and I'm telling you, that The Chatwal is all flash and absolutely NO SUBSTANCE. On top of that, they just don't give a damn. If you are going to NYC, I highly recommend one of the following "luxury" hotels: The Four Seasons, The Pierre, The Ritz- Carlton Central Park or the Plaza Athenee. You REALLY don't want to spend the big bucks to stay at The Chatwal. You'll pay a Rolls-Royce price and get only Ford Pinto service and accommodations. The Chatwal is a JOKE! read more
