It's #thankyouthursday and I had to share my love for this place and its superb staff. The variety of cheeses from around the world that are available here is unrivaled locally, and the knowledgeability of the staff is also stellar. Plus, they also sell every possible accompaniment you could want for a fancy "shark coochie" board (once I heard someone use this term for charcuterie, I couldn't unhear it!), gourmet grilled cheese, or any other foodie fromage needs. They also have lots of great crisps and crackers, and a nice wine selection. Since we can't currently do date night out, I highly recommend visiting Natalie and her staff and getting some great recommendations for an incredible date night in. Stopped in here today with my parents while we were in town for a wedding. These are super nice folks who are very knowledgable about their cheeses. They offer more than 60 varieties of cheese from 13 countries. Ask for a sample of anything and you'll get a thorough description of each cheese. I was excited because they have a great number of goat and sheep cheeses (I'm lactose intolerant and can't eat cow's milk cheese). Try the Ewephoria, a ewe's milk cheese which is a firm cheese, yet smooth and creamy and has some caramel notes. And, if they have it get the Mobay, which is a layered cheese, with one layer of goat and one layer of sheep, separated by a line of grape vine ash. I'd never had it and was hooked after a sample. Also, a bonus is they always have many samples of cheeses, crackers, spreads placed throughout the store. They have all the accoutrements to host any party: olives, pickled items, meats, spreads, crackers and a small selection of local Michigan wines. I'm so glad we stopped in and I will definitely come back if I'm ever in the area. What are you waiting for? A delightful shop that has more cheese than you could possibly imagine.. and more. A small shop somewhat in the middle of no where, once you walk in - you can find a lot of appetizer related goods from jams, jellies, crackers, knives, cutting boards, wines, and anything related to cheese. The cheese itself has a very impressive selection, and they give out samples of anything which is the best thing a shop like this could do. The cheese is expensive, but you know EXACTLY what you're getting so you can make the proper commitment to your aged dairy products. The staff is very well educated about their product and are usually very friendly. Another thing I recommend are their small wedges of "leftover cheese". Small bits and pieces from other wheels that they just package up and sell for cheap as a type of "sampler" so you can buy lots of different small amounts without having to commit to a large slab. The Cheese Lady is located in Kalamazoo and in route if you're headed to Ann Arbor or Detroit from west of Michigan. I highly recommend it for it's friendly service, cheese of course, and price. I walked out with a few new ideas for my next party and helpful tips from the owners. The best trick I learned from the Cheese Lady was how tasty two dichotomous flavors can be paired to create a dynamic duo. I tried the Stilton blue cheese with dark chocolate and was pleasantly surprised. I was just as astonished by the reasonable pricing. I almost thought the Cheese Lady made a mistake when she rung up my products. I bought a pear jam imported from Europe and Italian pesto spread to complement the cheese I bought. I was overwhelmed by the number of cheese complements at the store. There is also a wide variety of cheese accessories including cutting boards, knives, and re-usable cheese labels. The Cheese Lady in Kalamazoo just opened on St. Patty's day 3/17/2011 and I'm especially glad to have a Cheese shop to stop in before the Farmer's Market season begins. I was so delighted to find out that this store existed! I didn't think that the Kalamazoo area had anything like it. The staff were very helpful and very kind. They pulled out multiple samples for me and had wonderful suggestions based on the criteria of the cheeses I was looking for. The store had a lovely variety, and plenty of little goodies to go with the cheese including wine, crackers, and jellies and marmalades. The Cheese Lady had outstanding pairings to go with the wines This was the first time I really understood the purpose of pairing wine and cheese correctly. She also gave us information that helped us understand why we liked what we were eating. I have some particular dietary restrictions, and there were cheeses available that fit within my needs and the women told me the types of cheeses they had at their store that would also be options for me. Nestled in a quiet, little country cross street of Southern Kalamazoo, this little shop is a treasure worth seeking out. I live about 40 minutes away in Battle Creek, and I am a bit lazy about driving, since I work from home. This shop, family and road trips with my husband are about the only things that can get me behind the wheel for more than 15 minutes. When one walks into the shop, one is met with the friendly smiles of the owners behind the counter. Even at busy times, it never seems to take very long to get served, even though the owners generously offer free taste tests of whatever cheeses one is curious about. It feels great to see the American Dream being lived out in this shop, by these local small-business owners, and to know that I'm a part of it. In the past, I have been a huge fan of Zingerman's Creamery in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as I had never tasted better cheeses than what is offered there. That was the case until I came across The Cheese Lady. Do not mistake me. I still love Zingerman's. However, the cheese selection at the Cheese Lady is much broader, and I find more of them too good to resist purchasing. Furthermore, The Cheese Lady's prices are astoundingly cheaper. I always thought that great cheese required a hefty price tag, but The Cheese Lady has fine cheeses at affordable prices. It is great to get the best of both worlds. In addition to the wonderful cheese selection, this shop also offers an assortment of other fun items to accompany the cheese. Such items include various olive oils, pine nuts, crackers, cheese boards, and much more.
