Two weary travelers stop in after work based on a recommendation. We are immediately seated, greeted with a smile, and introduced to an incredible beer list. We decide to start with the broasted wing special and cheese curds because we are hungry fellas. While waiting for that, we order entrees. Well the curds and wings come and are great. About halfway through, we look at each other and realize even more food was a mistake. We mix up the beer choices, and dive into the main courses. Nothing gets finished completely, our belt buckles are introduced to new holes, and we finish up overly full. To sum it up, everything was great, but don't let your eyes lead the way. What can I add that the name doesn't state: The Chicken. This restaurant is a fried chicken road house - in all senses. You can see in my pic the big chicken. As you can see from my other patio pics, on good weather days, there is plenty of seating. It's a medium sized restaurant, and on this afternoon there was a waiting line to sit inside. I have a pic of the bar, which emphasizes the roadhouse vibe. I should mention that all 10 TVs had sports on them. I could keep up with my favorite teams without turning my head. Being first-timers, we had to try the Hot Chicken Sundae. As you can see from my pic, this is a layering of biscuit, mashed potatoes, fried chicken breast strips, gravy and topped with onion rings. Okay, the best part was the fried chicken: plentiful, moist, crunchy coatings, seasoned well with a bit of pepper heat. The onion rings were as crunchy as they looked, but didn't have very flavor. Been going to The Chicken for years, but had such a bad experience today I don't know if I'll go back. Easy place to stop and grab supper on the way home. Tonight I ordered one bang bang chicken taco with rice. When I got home, there were two tacos; felt kinda bad since I only paid for one. They could have used some bang bang sauce, that must have been forgotten. However, the rice was in a plastic bag, twisted shut, and then placed in a styrofoam container. It was pasty, yet slimy, and overwhelmingly gross. I know it's Tuesday, not the busiest night for restaurants, but I guess it's a good thing they gave me two tacos since the rice was inedible. read more

I did like the corrugated metal and rustic wood decor - giving it a bit of a old farm building feel inside. We started with a Salty Chick and an Orilla Sunset (see picture) drink - and really enjoyed both of them. For our meal we ordered a Nashville Hot Dinner (see picture) and a Chicken Strip Meal (see picture). The chicken was good and we really liked the fries - hearty, crispy on the outside & soft and hot on the inside. Best of all was the Carolina Mustard and Bang Bang sauces on the side - we loved both of them! While this is a bit out of the way for us since we live up in Urbandale and don't get this far south very often, we did enjoy our stop for dinner and would recommend it if you are in the area. However I do suggest to not get the bone-in wings for they just aren't comparable to their amazing and succulent boneless chicken. The waiters and waitresses are always very friendly and make me feel like I'm back at my grandmas house. Don't even get me started on those biscuits because I just want to shove 30 of them down my gullet. My pal Thaddeus says the Mac and Cheese is so creamy and yummy that he would bury himself in it. My wife and I have been wanting to try this place for a while and never get to that side of town. We went there on a PubPass- they had great beer selection. They also had a great food menu. I got the Nashville hot chicken and waffles- they were some of the best chicken waffles I've ever had. It's also right on a bike trail so if you're in that area riding bikes, I would recommend going. I had heard great things and was not disappointed. I had the chicken fried chicken breakfast which came with country potatoes and eggs any style. The chicken was perfectly crispy and nicely seasoned and topped with a delicious gravy. I loved the country potatoes too. My fiancée had the chicken tender grilled cheese which had all of the qualities of a great grilled cheese with crispy outer, soft cheesy center, and the crunch of the crispy chicken tenders took it to a whole other level of delicious. I had a Bloody Mary which was tasty, but not spicy at all. I would order it again and ask if they could make it spicy. We were happy to find that they carry Fair State brewing Mirror Universe which is a favorite of ours and hard to find in Iowa. The decor inside is a cozy farmhouse style with barn board etc. The patio is spacious and looks like it could accommodate larger groups. We noticed a high top with enough seats for all of us open up and we asked to sit there. They told us no because they had a family waiting for it. 3.4 The place has got a good vibe and the chicken is broasted (pressure fried) so it, like all broasted chicken is darn good. On the food side of things the sides are what let it down. When biscuits are almost always included, then make them great. These were not close to good much less great. Breaded, sprayed, coated french fries, should be illegal. The mashed potatoes seemed real and almost too creamy but the gravy had that tell-tale salty chicken base flavor as did many of the sides. My husband and I went here last night for dinner and were underwhelmed. We both ordered boneless chicken strips with fries. The fries tasted like the cheap frozen fries you get at the grocery store. There was nothing special about them and they didn't even have salt on them. Mine were hard and dry. I think they might have been overcooked. My chicken was dry and a little tough but my husband said his wasn't. The chicken was very crunchy but I didn't taste much seasoning on it. I hate to say it, but I think KFC's chicken has more flavor than this. The Asian Sting dipping sauce was pretty good but my husband didn't care for his Gochujang sauce. They do give you a good amount of food for your money. They also charge you a service fee for using a card instead of cash, like a lot of restaurants are doing now. I've heard so many good things about this place and don't understand why. The food is just mediocre. If you want really good chicken, I would highly recommend Charlotte's Kitchen. I ordered the chicken strip grilled cheese, my girlfriend ordered the buffalo wings and my daughter had the kids grilled cheese. We also ordered cheese curds for an appetizer. The serving sizes were decent and I was able to stretch my one meal into two. Also when we first came in there was a bartender who made some sort of coffee drink that looked amazing (If I was a coffee drinker). The only complaint I would have is the price. I came here a couple weeks ago and I thought the food was perfect. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and was so good that I came back two days later to have another. Inside the restaurant you can see a tv at every spot and outside it's quiet and has, of course, a giant chicken. I have nothing good or bad to say about the service.
