The food and service were great, but finding a gem in the country outside of Des Moines really made the evening special. To start the service was great. Our waitress was speedy, attentive and polite. Next the food was amazing! I ordered the chicken strip grilled cheese, my girlfriend ordered the buffalo wings and my daughter had the kids grilled cheese. We also ordered cheese curds for an appetizer. The serving sizes were decent and I was able to stretch my one meal into two. Also when we first came in there was a bartender who made some sort of coffee drink that looked amazing (If I was a coffee drinker). The only complaint I would have is the price. Was bummed they were out of Toppling Goliath beer I wanted, but can't fault them for that. The Nashville chicken sliders were delicious. I came here a couple weeks ago and I thought the food was perfect. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and was so good that I came back two days later to have another. Inside the restaurant you can see a tv at every spot and outside it's quiet and has, of course, a giant chicken. I have nothing good or bad to say about the service. Came on Saturday for dinner. Very busy but we got a seat at the bar and avoided the wait. Gotta say the bartenders were EXCEPTIONAL! Tuned all the TVs to the ISU game so we were very happy. I had a 3 piece broasted chicken, wife had a salad. Outstanding chicken. Saw the chicken sandwich next to us - huge and will try that next time. I don't know what kind of black magic, deal with the devil situation the roaster here has going on but I am here for it. Some of the best chicken I've ever had, hot crispy, well seasoned. Biscuits are great. Mashed potatoes aren't the best but sub in man n cheese or broccoli and you will have a meal to remember. We've continued to be patrons of The Chicken since it's so close to our house and we can do carryout. The parking lot is always full on the evenings at dinner time. But, that doesn't mean there's a long wait. The parking lot is just small. If the bike racks are also full and there are cars lining the road, you may want to come back another time. I recommend almost anything from their lunch/dinner menu. But will say the Chicken Salad Sliders are bland and disappointing. I wish I could give them five stars but I still cannot. We've dined in for breakfast numerous times and our last visit was disappointing. They removed any item that required made to order eggs. Instead they really cheapened up the kids breakfast menu items to Waffle Bites and French Toast Sticks (with a slice of bacon or sausage and a drink) for $4.99. You want something with eggs? Better get the Breakfast Casserole ($8.99) or the Tacos (2 for $6.9. They also changed how you order the Migas tacos but they hadn't changed the system yet so I was shocked when I received one taco for $6.99. When I asked the waitress was confused and I pulled up the menu. She handled it VERY well and didn't charge us for them. I voiced our disappointment over the changes to the breakfast menu and the waitress agreed. I'm guessing they can't find cooks for the early weekend hours so they simplified it a ton. We'll keep going for lunch/dinner but will probably avoid breakfast until some other options become available. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile. My son and I made it a late lunch/early dinner stop today. We kind walked in the back door and made our way up to the hostess station. We were greeted and welcomed a couple times on our way. Lots of smiles from staff. Once we got to the hostess station we were welcomed again and seated right away. The parking is a mostly gravel lot, but the handicapped parking is on a part of the concrete slab that makes up the entrance to the building and the patio. Seating is a mixture of high and low top tables along with bar seating. The floor is smooth concrete. The doors are wide and there is plenty of width between tables. A combination that makes navigating a restaurant easier for someone with a wheelchair or walker. The atmosphere is kind of a combination of bar and grill and sportsbar. Lots of big screens to catch games on... Still kid friendly though (including a kids menu). We started out with an order of fried cheese curds... Served with marinara and ranch... These were fantastic! I wanted to try the jalapeño popper deviled eggs, but my 10 yr old didn't share the same thoughts. I ordered the hot chicken sundae (biscuits, mashed potatoes, and chicken covered in a white gravy with fried onions on top). How can you not order something with a name like that? My son got the two piece broasted chicken dinner (breast and a drumstick) with corn and baked beans. Both his broasted chicken, and the strips of chicken breast with my dinner, were cooked perfectly. The breading was seasoned on both. The spices came forward, but didn't overpower the chicken. It complimented as it should. Service was stellar. Our server checked on us on a regular basis and was quick with refills. The two dinners, appetizer, and two fountain drinks (Coke products) came to $39 and change before tip. We both left full. A great first experience and I'll be back to try those eggs and their version of Nashville hot chicken. read more

Showed up right after every bicyclist in Iowa so it was busy. I thought they were biking to be healthy bit they were just there to drink beer. Anyhow the Nashville chicken was good, a little greasy. The crinkle fries were below average. Cheese curds were OK. They have a decent beer selection and a full bar. So of you bike with Karen she can get a Moscow Mule. An Iowa gem. This spot is very remote and off the beaten path! But we'll worth the drive down an olè county road. Parking lot was full on a Sunday NASCAR afternoon (Los Angeles Memorial Colosseum) from the moment I walked in the staff was friendly and welcoming, sat at the bar so I could watch the race and ordered the chicken sliders, you have the option of 2 or 3 and a whole bunch of great sides to boot! Chicken was tender and the shell was crispy and flavorful, I honestly wish after the fact that I would have ordered the 3! The Menu features many flavorful options for which I plan to return for, especially the one entitled "Hot Chicken Sundae" see my picture for the description. We walked in during lunch time and was told by bartender to sit anywhere. There are a lot of high top tables and some shorter seating level. It took at least 5 minutes for someone to serve us. The server apologized for not seeing us walk in. Service got better. What we ordered: Fried pickle chips - these were fresh out of fryer, but they were very oily. We had to wipe down with napkin. (Hopefully just an off day). It was like the oil wasn't hot enough. Jalapeno deviled eggs - not my fave. It just had a weird taste to me. My opinion -- maybe others may like it. Nashville hot chicken meal - these were strips in batter and covered with Nashville hot sauce. Comes with one side and biscuit. Served with pickles. Broasted chicken with two sides - crispy chicken. This is my favorite chicken place in the world!! This place is always on top of things and has fresh amazing tasting food. I come here very often with my family and never am disappointed with anything. The waiters are super nice and the food comes out super fast. My family and I got the wings, chicken and waffles, pizza, Nashville hot chicken sliders, and cheese curds. All of this food was out of this world. The sliders were a staple for this place though, they taste amazing and have a little kick to them. Also the chicken and waffles are a perfect sweet and savory item to pick because it has a glaze and syrup sauce with the waffle but a couple chicken tenders to go with it. This item is always amazing. The pizza is very good here too with great options for toppings and super crispy slices. All around this place is a 9.6/10. We did so in to try and get a seat. The place was busy. The parking lot full. The wait was 30 min. We took out our buzzer to the car and then decided to call in an order to go. Same length of time to wait, but so worth it. I got the iowa hot chicken meal and jalapeño deviled eggs. We loaded everything into the car, made our way back home and had a delicious meal. The chicken was hot, crispy with a kick. Just what I was craving. The crinkle cut fries were good even though they had some time before we got to eat them. The biscuit that came with the meal was fantastic. Just the perfect doughy constancy. We enjoyed the deviled eggs. I was disappointed during my visit. Server was a 20 something guy wearing gym shorts that had very little skill in being a server. He was not enthusiastic, did not have manners and was just mediocre at best. He also had no concept of clearing appetizer plates from a small round high top table top. My chips and queso were okay. The queso and salsa were both bland but the chips were great. I had the 2 piece chicken dinner that had very dry and bland corn and okay mashed potatoes and gravy. The biscuit was rock solid like it had been in a warmer all day. Luckily, the chicken was good. I will definitely not go out of my way to plan on eating here again but if I get invited I will try something new. read more

The Chicken. What can I say? Biscuits topped with mashed potatoes, gravy, juicy breaded chicken strips, and onion rings. They call it the Hot Chicken Sundae. I call it flavor perfection! It was a Saturday and we had a party of 9 so naturally we had to wait to get into a place with food this good. That's to be expected. So they gave us a pager and we went and had a couple Ruthies while we waited at the bar conveniently located across the street until they called us in. This is good old fashioned Iowa comfort food at it's absolute best. I can close my eyes and it brings me back to childhood. Sitting at my grandma and grandpas kitchen table talking to grandpa while grandmas cooking us up some deliciousness not unlike some of the dishes served here. The only difference is grandma didn't make me a Moscow Mule to go along with it! And what a great mule it was. I elected for the strawberry vodka in mine and it was strong yet went down smooth. Everything you could ask for in a drink. My new favorite drink at The Chicken. I'll definitely be getting more of these drinks when I come back. The service was outstanding as well. This lady, I didn't catch her name unfortunately, was very down to earth and personable and so helpful. She kept the drinks full while we waited and made sure to keep checking in on us in spite of how busy she obviously was. She had a great attitude and made me feel welcome and at home here! If you're looking for some great food and drink at good prices and a fun upbeat atmosphere then seriously try this place out. You won't regret it. read more

Finally made it out to this place. Damn, the food was great! I tried the deep fried pickles, which was a good size portion. Then the broasted chicken as well as the chicken and waffles. Everything came out hot and fresh with tons of flavor. If it couldn't get any better, the prices were cheap! My only complaint was how loud it was in there. Be prepared to use your outside voice. Please read all of it! Let me tell you about our experience at the chicken. First off I've heard some good things from some people I work with, so I decided to have my birthday dinner there with the family. There were 11 of us. They made us wait until at least half of our party was there, which wouldn't be a big deal if they were busy, but they weren't. We ordered appetizers. The onion rings were nasty and greasy, and most of the breading had fallen off. The egg rolls were very bland, and the cheese curds were also very greasy! I wanted the Iowa chicken strips, I heard they were very hot, they weren't, and the only reason they weren't greasy was because of the piece of texas toast they put under them, which was soaking wet with.... you guessed it, grease! My wife said her burger was nothing at all to rave about, and I didn't really hear anyone else going mmmmmm either! Now the good part. Whose ever birthday it is gets to pick the restaurant, tell my wife what kind of cake they want, and she bakes and decorates it, all from scratch. We always take the cake with us to wherever we go and eat it after the meal. Well not at the chicken! They told us NO and would not budge on this. Now I realize that most restaurants have a sign saying no food brought in, but we have done this at restaurants all over DSM and surrounding areas, and we have never had an issue. One time a yuppie restaurant on Ingersol charged us an extra $2 per plate for this, but nobody else has ever said anything at all. Especially after we just spent $250 there! I think that restaurant is defunct. Hope it wasn't my reviews! We ended up taking our cake to the bar across the street, and they were very nice about it. BTW, thank you to people there!! So, if you're looking for a good place to eat, and have your cake and EAT it too, don't go to "The Chicken" for sure!! I did give them one star, but that's only because it didn't go any lower! We stopped in here on a spur of the moment date night. Neither my husband or I had ever been before but heard great things! We chose to sit outside as there was a wait that night to sit inside. The hostess was very nice and tried to seat us out of the sun the best she could. I wish I would've caught our servers name as she was great! She was new and had only been on her own for a couple of days and you never would've guessed. We started with an order of onion rings and then wanted to try a few things so got the chicken taco and chicken sliders to share. The sliders were good but we both LOVED the chicken taco. My issue came when I asked the General Manager Josh if he would please turn the one TV that had the Talladega race on back to the race. We tried this place out since we've heard nothing but great things. I got the chicken salad sliders and the chicken salad itself was good but the buns weren't warmed or toasted, just dry cold buns. The French fried and dipping sauces were good. The people I was with got the braised chicken meal. They thought the chicken could be a bit more crispy and the sweet corn that comes with the meal is just frozen corn warmed up. They do have a wide variety of drinks, however the water straight up tastes like it came from a hose. The atmosphere is very hole in the wall and it was fairly dirty inside. The staff was decently nice, nothing to over the top or bad. Overall we thought it was a bit overpriced for what we got. read more

On the bike trails again (Great Western Trails) and this place was for lunch. I am always looking for some fried chicken so I was a little excited for some classic fried chicken and beer. It's almost required to have a beer when going on a bike ride with friends. It's called The Chicken but there are so many other options on the menu but I went with he boasted chicken. The prices were pretty good for what you get so that's always a plus, I got the Breast and Thigh that's served with some mashed potatoes, corn and a biscuit. Everything was fine, it's pretty standard and nothing really stood out. I feel like it's how fried chicken should taste and the chicken itself was moist. The biscuit is where it lacked I feel... It wasn't fluffy it was weirdly dense and butter didn't really help it much. After a nice bike ride towards Cumming, IA you may want to stop by here for some food and drinks. Like I've said in many other reviews, we need more of these places along the bike trails. read more

I have been to this restaurants on two occasions. The first time it was super busy and we were told it would be about a 30 to 45 minute wait. We were invited to sit at the bar and have some drinks while we waited, but the bar was packed. However, there were seats available throughout the restaurant where we could sit and wait and the wait ended up being about 25 minutes so it wasn't bad. Our server was friendly and although he was super busy checked on us often, made recommendations, and offered little extras like bringing us samples of beers that we were curious about. I appreciated that he was taking that extra time even though he was moving around and serving so many other customers. I chose the broasted chicken meal and while the menu has a ton of other stuff, I don't know that I would go for anything else. Not many places have broasted chicken, so it is definitely a destination place when I want that dish. The chicken was tender and juicy while the breading was crispy. It was a little salty but they have these sweet hot sauces on the tables that help balance out the saltiness. They are unique to a few restaurants in the area and are not yet available in retail locations, but the sauces are made in Iowa. It is a spacious building and the tables are not so close together where you feel like you are intimately dining with a bunch of strangers. There are lots of televisions all around for those who want to keep up with sports and outdoor seating for those coming off the trails or who just like the outdoors. They also have a pretty impressive beer list and a full bar. The second time I went I had the same meal but tried the mashed potatoes and will definitely stick to that. They taste homemade, with chunks of potato and slivers of potato skins. The service was just as friendly the second time, even though our server had only been there two days. Overall, it is a great place to get your Fried Chicken fixed. read more
