I stopped at the Chile Pepper on the way from Arizona to California, and i enjoyed it! I got the Bean, Cheese and Rice burrito and i thought it was great! What i think that made the burrito was the Salsa! I would defiantly go back but i am not sure if it is a must go! I'm a Chicagoan in Yuma for a family vacation. My husband takes me to Chile Peppers. He grew up in Yuma, & won't stop talking about how awesome the Bean and cheese burrito is. So we go. I HATE beans, of all sorts. Especially re-fried beans. So i order a Machaca burrito. Which is delicious!! I've never had Mexican food that good. Just sayin'!! Something comes over me, & I decide I want to try a bite of the Bean and cheese burrito, he's always raving about. Let me tell you!! I was in heaven!! I walked right up to that counter and ordered two for myself, & rolled tacos!! Best burrito ever. Heard from several people that this Mexican food establishment was all that.... finally made it over to Yuma and gave it a go. Sadly it was not at all like people had made it out to be. Had the green chili plate very weak on flavor and not hot at all, salsa was bad and watered down and the rolled tacos tasted like the oil they used was burned. I grew up on bean and cheese burritos and rolled tacos from Chile Pepper. Best beans, fresh flour tortillas, rolled tacos and hot sauce in the world as far as I'm concerned. The locals know what I'm talking about. The hot sauce is the perfect consistency to get into all the nooks and crannies of a rolled taco as you pour it down one end. This place was pretty good. We came here a day after starting our vacation. I had a bean, cheese and rice burrito. The sauce it comes with it is pretty tasty - not too spicy and not too mild! My boyfriend and his sister had different burritos and they thought they were good too. We were told we would have a 30 min wait but it ended up only being 15. I would go here if you haven't already. I would prefer to got to the Cass Gutierrez which is owned by the same people that own Chili Peppers. When i first moved to Yuma, people would rave about this place. After trying it I couldn't understand why. And now it's even worse. Their on line menu is in desperate need of an update. Their food quality has gone way down. And their customer service is terrible! Every time you try to call in an order you are either on hold for 30+ minutes or you have to call back and demand that you not be put on hold!! And then they are rude to you!! What you should order: They are best known for their bean & cheese burritos, rolled tacos and the "sauce". * The sauce - People this is not hot sauce or salsa so get over it!!! The secret to the sauce is you drink it after each bite, spoon it into your buritto and use it for "dunking" the rolled tacos. Another trick is opening your burrito and filling it up. Messy but incredibly tasty! Once you got this down, your mind set will change. * Rolled tacos (only called that in Yuma) elsewhere taquitos - The meat is moist and seasoned just right. If you come in early in the morning to pickup a to go order, you will see ladies rolling the tacos. The corn tortillas are thin and crisp. We order uncooked tacos and freeze them for future use. Yes, they will sell them to you uncooked. * Bean & Cheese burritos - The beans taste homemade and not out of can. It's amazing how many places can screw up refried beans.The jack cheese is a nice compliment to their beans. We usually order extra. Yes, it cost $.50 more but it's worth it. The tortillas are warm and fresh. They are also good just by themselves or ordered as a buttered tortilla or quesadilla. The burritos are small because most people order along with the tacos. The simplicity of the bean and cheese burrito along with the tacos and dunking sauce is a local favorite. * Ice tea - Is fresh brewed not instant and has free refills. * Pepsi - I always say, you can tell if a Mexican food restaurant is going to be good is if they know how to mix their soda. Their Pepsi is NEVER flat and has the right combination of syrup and carbonation. A nice sweet burn. Sorry, no free refills. Get a large! Dining area: * The reason for the "high school cafeteria" feel is because the local high schools basically support these two places. This is a fast food place not a 5 star TexMex cruisine. Get them in and out. One thing I can say is you will always run into someone you know if you spend any amount of time there. Great people watching experience and place to meet up. Customer Service: * For all you non "Yumans", Chile Pepper and/or Mr. G's has NEVER been known for its customer service...that is non-existent. In my opinion, I believe they think because they are locally owned and run by family members, they are exempt from "customer service". If it ain't broke why fix it. And why should they...they are rolling in the dough. Although, with the small town mentality reversed they could be doing a 100 times better. Unfortunately, they are there to just take your order as fast as possible. No secret menu items here. If there isn't a button for it (aka not on the menu) they will not cater to you. Mr. G's tends to be better. So if you have dietary restrictions (allergic to gutten or other) this is not the place for you. But for us die-hard fans, born and raised in Yuma, we just deal with it because we get our order and leave. I do have to say that they are very fast, efficient and consistent and 98% of the time your order is right. In their book, mission accomplished! The reason they don't expand, is because the customer service wouldn't fly elsewhere. And their fan base is from the local kids that went to school there and hooked in their parents. But when I go back to hang out, I definitely make it back to chili pepper. You see, i have read a lot of reviews about chili pepper and iI take it personally when some dumb ass who doesnt know a turd from a tootsie roll, gets on here and blasts this place and says it was "nasty", go @#%& your self. When i go to towns or cities i never been to before iI ask where to eat, naturally. When i get to the institution they rereference to, I always ask what is known here as the good stuff. Why would you go to a taco place and order jalapeño poppers and all this other stuff that doesnt make sense. Ask them what is good. as stated by other people, this place IS consistent. I have never been anywhereelse that has been this consistent and GOOD after eating here since i was a kid, 26 years worth of chili pepper and i never left saying, "that sucked". This isnt 5 star dining or dont expect Bobby Flay who thinks he knows everything about southwest cooking, to come out and get all fancy on that ass.
