OK, so I grew up in Yuma. I live in Tucson now and I must say, there is some damn good Mexican food here. Probably some of the best in the world. But when I go back to hang out, I definitely make it back to chili pepper. You see, i have read a lot of reviews about chili pepper and iI take it personally when some dumb ass who doesnt know a turd from a tootsie roll, gets on here and blasts this place and says it was "nasty", go @#%& your self. When i go to towns or cities i never been to before iI ask where to eat, naturally. When i get to the institution they rereference to, I always ask what is known here as the good stuff. Why would you go to a taco place and order jalapeño poppers and all this other stuff that doesnt make sense. Ask them what is good. as stated by other people, this place IS consistent. I have never been anywhereelse that has been this consistent and GOOD after eating here since i was a kid, 26 years worth of chili pepper and i never left saying, "that sucked". This isnt 5 star dining or dont expect Bobby Flay who thinks he knows everything about southwest cooking, to come out and get all fancy on that ass. Its good homemade mexican food, from your grandma or your buddy who is mexican, grandma. The salsa pair perfectly with their rolled tacos and cheese tortillas aka cheese quesadilla. I grew up eating Chili Pepper and it spoiled me for life. I have since lived in almost every major city in the US - East Coast, West Coast and Midwest - and have not found anything that can come close. The Beef Machaca is juicy and flavorful, the tortillas are home made and tasty in and of themselves and the salsa is perfect. I live on the East Coast now but am trying to find a way back to Yuma for this. read more

I would have given this restaurant a five star if it weren't for the horrible customer service skills and the the way they cheat you out of food. I believe if you pay more for something like a bean & cheese burrito with rice in it (brc), it should weigh more than their standard bc. Not there. They simply lessen the beans and substitute it with the rice. Kind of messed up. And its like that for all their burritos. You'd be better off ordering a few bean and cheese burritos AND a side of rice, which you can add on later yourself. At least you'll be gettin what you're paying for. Now for the customer service. You aren't greeted with a smile or enquiry of how the day is. They simply stare at you and wait for you to order. No thank you after paying. I figured it must be just someone having a bad day. Oh well, at least I'll get my food in a timely manner since there was only two people before me and my order is quite small (3brc). Ummm.. yeah, nope! There is no difined area where to-go orders wait, NOR is there a defined line to wait to place your order in. Standing aroumd for 15 MINUTES watching the awkwardness of people asking eachother who's in line, who's just hanging out, and who's waiting on their order is almost unbearable! I end up asking about my order and sure enough it came right out. The lady was kind enough to say sorry for the wait and wished me a nice day. Without hesitation i grabbed my bag and walked out fast enough to avoid being asked if i was waiting in line for the 8th time. Takes me a good 40 minutes to get home since I'm located in the Foothills but FINALLY I'M HOME. Upon opening my bag, I noticed an abundance of salsa. Does everyone in Yuma eat 4 ounces of salsa with a single burrito? Wow. Anyway, on to my brc burritos. But wait.. do i get my brc burritos? NOPE. i get 2 bean & cheese burritos and 1 brc. Naturally I'm a little upset. So I call and let them know how far I've driven just to be disappointed. Instead of apologizing for this offense they want me to DRIVE THE BURRITIS BACK TO THEM so i can prove myself, then they will either add warm rice to my cold burritos or give me a credit. What. The. F%ck. I've left there before with a missing item and they just credited my account. But this just takes the cake. I have to PROVE myself?? Drive ALL THE WAY BACK for THEIR mistake??? What is wrong with these people??? Never again. My advice to anyone who takes food to-go: Not only do you need to physically examine the bag of all its delicious and expensive contents, you need to unwrap each burrito, unfold and count your tacos, and make sure there's cheese on your burger, because the ONLY thing you can count on is getting too much salsa with your order EVERY time. read more

Not the best burrito I've ever had, but not the worst. This is not your typical Burrito place. Carne asada with refried beans wrapped up in a small tortilla is something I could have easily made at home. While it was not terrible there are definitely better taco shops around yuma. read more

Not good at all. The menu is very small and almost every item is made with beef. Almost zero chicken or non-meat items. Only non-beef item I think is the bean and cheese burrito. Restaurant will not modify any dish in any way. I don't even think you can buy a side of beans or rice there. So your choices are extremely limited. And no, I'm not a vegetarian. Been there twice and staff was extremely rude both times. Never met restaurant stuff that was less interested in basic customer service like answering questions about the food. The longer I live in Arizona, the more I feel like- If the cashier can articulate her feelings just by how she drew in her eyebrows that day- it's probably going to be good! My husband is a huge fan- My sister and I were driving back from the beach and decided to stop in to grab some food for him. The place is a little tucked away- but it was busy! The first thing I noticed was that there were only women working there- hustling in the back, cleaning after people, and running the register. It seemed a family owned place, cafeteria setting- and the menu board reminded me of concession stand menu boards at a Little League ball park. All this is not a bad thing, in my small travels, this is what actually made me feel like it's a legit local joint. I was greeted by a really sweet angry eye-browed cashier (You mad sis? Aw naw, that's just your eyebrows). We ordered what my husband told me to, machaca burrito, bean and cheese burritos with and tacos (or taquitos), and extra salsa. Apparently, the carne asada isn't the best my husband has had. We can home with the food and were not disappointed! Apparently, this is the best way to eat their bean and cheese burrito- Unroll bean and cheese Place rolled taco in burrito Pour in some salsa Roll burrito back up Dip in salsa as you are eating You'll be happy you did it! Every Yuman needs to eat here once, just so they know what everyone is talking about. Sort of a Yuma institution. I don't find them to be all that great, sort of in between real mexican food and mexican-american fast food. The portions are very small, and they don't put any condiments on your food such as guacamole or sour cream (or anything else for that matter). They will sell you little cups of it on the side, but to me this is a pain and kind of weird. Their bean burritos are pretty decent. read more

After seeing this restaurant on a list of 10 best burritos in country we went out of our way to check it out. Best in country? Probably not even best in Yuma. As noted elsewhere, portions were small but they were cheap so that's fine. But beans were runny, cheese minimal and the only salsa choice was watery (really only one?). We also tried enchiladas, which were served in very salty sauce with wimpy rice and more runny beans. We went to counter to request the sour cream that was missing from the taco salad but had to return to table to get the receipt to prove we really ordered one. This place is not fancy by any means. If you are use to having your burrito with anything in it besides carne asada than go some where else. The rolled tacos have good flavor but comes plain with a very plain hot sauce. I would not recommend this place to anyone at all. This was a sad attempt at Mexican food. The guacamole is the fake stuff you buy at the supermarket and they charge you extra for a tablespoon of it! When the food came out it was just unappetizing. We ordered rolled tacos, their "folded" tacos, and carne asada burritos, all were way smaller portions than what we expected for the price. I love this place. Every time someone visits me in Houston, I ask them to bring me Chile Pepper. When I went back to Yuma last week for the first time in 5 years and told them I was buying lots of food to bring back to Texas, they gave me extra salsa (which is not something they always do). When my son spilled soda 5 minutes before closing time, all of the wonderful ladies reassured us that it was no big deal. All-in-all, still great food and great service. The reason I gave 4/5 stars is because of the prices. I know it's not 1995 when I used to get bean and rice burritos for $0.75, but almost $4 is a bit much. A dozen rolled tacos (which are still the best) is over $7. Again, it's pricey compared to when I used to live in Yuma, but I have to admit it is worth it. I still love the food and highly recommend this place to anyone that wants to try one of the top 10 burritos (the bean and cheese burrito, I believe) in the country! read more

Wait time was a bit long. You have to stand around and constantly tell people as they are walking in weather or not your waiting in line or waiting for food. That's a little frustrating. Salsa overload. They gave us 8 containers for 6 burritos. Food is good though, except everyones burrito had a hole or tear in the tortilla causing a total mess. Had to eat our burritos with forks. We've had the burritos before, but this time the beans tasted like they mixed burnt beans in with the good beans? I wish they wouldn't scrape the bottom of the pot when they've burnt. It's hit or miss with Chile Pepper. The staff could really use some customer service training. They aren't rude, but they definitely aren't welcoming or friendly. They kind of just ignore everyone and just take and push out orders with a stoic attitude. For those of you new to Yuma, the South West, take the time to find out about the history of this wonderful pioneer family and the contribution they have made to Yuma for MANY years. If I could I would give it zeros stars, first thing first, the table were dirty, I waited like 20mins to get my food, all I order was 4 tacos and 3 rolled tacos and horchata. 4 order were given out before mine and they came after me. Ok I got my food and drink. The drink was water down completely it was like I was drinking water with food coloring and no free refills, no I understand if the drink and made fresh no free refills but if is on a soda dispenser really no free refills? My food was cold as fish. The carne asada on the tack looked and tasted like it was boiling rather the grilled no condiments on a taco really? The chicken taco was the same cold and tasteless, the roll taco were cold and looked like they were frozen the meet was chewy and tasteless again with no condiments at all. Everyone knows if you go to a Mexican food spot and you order rolled taco you get cabbage, sour cream and cheese and sauce. With tacos some cilantro and onions but not this place. I was thoroughly unimpressed with this place. In fact it sucks. It was recommended to me and my wife by different people. We went on a Saturday afternoon and I thought for such a highly lauded place, the menu would have been clearer. The girl taking our order was difficult to understand and my wife had to repeat her order 4 times and it was still wrong. I ordered 2 tacos for $2.29 each so my expectations were high. I've had better tacos in New Mexico or frankly at Del Taco. The salsa was watery and flavorless. They gave us 1 small container of guacamole for the side order of chips. When we ran out I went to the counter for more and was told I had to pay extra. Nice customer service! And by the way when I went to the counter I stood there expecting some service and was completely ignored. My wife ordered a salad with beans and chips--no chips were in the salad. The thing that completely baffled me was that while the service and the food were substandard, the place was packed and I still can't figure out why after what we experienced. I'd like to say, that yes, I have been outside of Yuma (to all you Californians who have dissed this place)... And Chile Pepper is a local tradition... So an outsider can't really relate. It's like that one place you've grown up going to, and once you leave you crave it instantly. My friend who was born here still craves Chile Pepper, even though he's been living on Oahu for quite some time now... I've noticed the "bad" reviews came from people from larger cities whose ideas of Mexican restaurants are probably On the Border, or some top "Mexican" fusion cuisine, which frankly, wouldn't be considered authentic to begin with. Saw another negative review from someone who was from Huntington Beach... Yeah, that's self-explanatory... Mostly, wealthy people over there... Anyway, my point being... If you're a local, this is a great place to get tacos, quesadillas, burritos, etc. It may not be the fanciest place, but it's delicious! Come live here in the southwest for awhile, and you'll soon notice, the places with the best, close to authentic food will be the "hole in the walls", the "taco trucks", the "cafeteria" lookin' restaurants... guarantee it. read more

ive grown up eating this stuff yeah its greasy yeah its fattening, but its so good the bean and cheese are good i prefer the bean rice and cheese and tace and as far as the salsa being watery yeah but doesnt mean flavorless i love it. so if your not a health nut and enjoy the food thats not always the best choice i highly recommend this place one more tip call 411 for there number so you can preorder if its around lunch time you get in and out alot faster read more
