Cool neighborhood bar since 1876, friendly service and just a fun place to hang out as we waited for our restaurant down the street to open.

Really cute bar, nice and friendly service, fun name, touch tunes, and a pool table. I loved the Chip Inn Ale sign too!

I love this bar! Everyone is super friendly and seems to be having a great time with engaging bartenders. Drinks are not expensive, and we have loved the atmosphere on more than one occasion.

I've lived right around the corner from Chipp Inn for the last year or so. I was really looking forward to checking it out before COVID, but right as I moved in lockdown happened and many businesses closed. However, I learned they were open again and was able to visit this weekend, and I'm glad I did. Friendly bartender and super cheap drinks. I seriously felt like I was in college again with how cheap these specials were. There's the group of regulars that know everyone when they walk in, say hello and the bartender is already offering up their usual order. That being said, as a first time visitor, I felt right at home and look forward to coming back.

Fun little neighborhood bar. We were staying at a nearby Airbnb and wanted a drink. This was the spot.

Great dive bar vibes, extremely cheap beers and specials. Cash only but there's an ATM inside.

I'm unsure if it was because of the time being happy hour or just general dive bar practices but the Hamm's and a Strohs.

It's a reasonably-priced busy dive bar in the heart of Chicago. I asked the bartender if she had a beer + shot deal and she said "no, but you can order a beer and shot." And so we did! Noise level is fairly high, thanks to a lively crowd plus a jukebox. They don't normally serve food but I think are fine with customers bringing in your own food, and you can also place an order from a nearby restaurant (I don't recall which one). And yes, it's cash only so bring some money if you don't want to pay ATM fees! 4 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. I like bars that allow customers to bring (or order) their own food - it allows for all diets! The one thing I'd like to see is more beer on tap - even just one good rotating local beer (e.g., Goose Island). Draft beer has smaller environmental footprints compared to bottled or canned.

After a quick ID check at the door, the bouncer let us know it's cash only (thankfully we came prepared). From the moment we walked in, dim lighting, loud music, and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds gave the vibe of a full-on frat party, but not in a bad way. It's chaotic, energetic, and unapologetically no-frills. There's even a self-serve cooler with drink prices clearly listed underneath. I grabbed a Sapporo Premium, brought it to the counter, and our friendly bartender broke our change and offered a chilled glass to pour it into. Simple and efficient. That said, it was loud, so loud that even whispering-distance conversations were a struggle. The space is small, seating is limited, and since we couldn't snag a spot, we ended up leaving shortly after finishing our drinks. This feels like a better weekday hang than a packed weekend night. Still, if you're looking for a classic, gritty, no-frills dive experience, Rossi's delivers exactly that.

Bad vibes and rude staff? They're proving you can do it all!…read moreCame in for one drink and went to close out. I wanted to pad the tab so tried to order a green tea shot. I realize it's not the simplest shot to make. The gray-haired bartender refused as it was too much work for one shot. Fair enough, I said I'd get two. He said making fewer than four was "a pain in the ass" and he wouldn't do it. Never mind then! Paid, tipped, and started to leave. Didn't want to interrupt the guys impersonation of a bartender for too long. I did mention it to the door staff as I was leaving and they had a problem too. Told me "yeah he's 100% right". Whatever! If the rude service isn't enough, maybe you'll like the copaganda around the bar. I recommend pretty much anywhere else.

While we were waiting for our drinks, he was arguing with two Hispanic men right next to us--for quite a while. When he finally served our drinks, he only brought one, forgetting my fiancé's order. We tried to be patient, but we had an appointment to get to. My fiancé politely said, "Excuse me, I didn't get my drink," and the bartender snapped back, "You didn't order a drink." When my fiancé clarified, the bartender doubled down and said, "No, you didn't, and if you have a problem, you can leave too." At that point, the two men walked out, and we should have, too. Needless to say, this place is a hard pass. Cringe vibes, rude staff, and no sense of customer service. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Surprised this place is still in business given the similar reviews I've seen. Old man needs therapy.

So I visited it in her stead (another benefit of subscribing to AfterActionReport.info). Quite simply the best maintained dive bar I have ever had the pleasure of drinking in and an AAR Must Drink. Most dive bars have a fair amount of seed and are in need of some repair, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not this place, as the spotless tile floor was completely intact, all the swivel barstools (each branded "Richard's Bar" across the back) still swiveled, and the tin ceiling stunning. It's coming up on a hundred years, but the entire joint has been as lovingly cared for as it is cleaned daily. The place has a slight smell of cigarettes. When I mentioned to Joe the bartender, that "I didn't think you could still legally smoke in a bar in this country." He replied "You can't, but people do," as he placed an ashtray next to my beer. All that, and Norm Wendt's brother-in-law bought me a bottle of Old Style because it was his birthday, which was drunk while listening to Steve Lawrence on the jukebox. Norm Wendt's sister then recommended a place for fondue so . . . Located in Old Town, Geja's Cafe is a very romantic warren of a restaurant that offers the best fondue in Chicago. A father/son team ("the Marios") served me the International (tenderloin, shrimp, chicken), a solid Flackhattan and some live flamenco guitar.

By that time I was already a "Past" smoker so it really didn't have to much of an effect on me other than the air around you was smelled much nicer. What made me bring up this ancient issue was our party of five left La Scarola restaurant this past Sunday night and went next door to Richard's Bar, where for the first time this century I encountered a bar where everyone was smoking! I must say, that this flash from the past was actually rather refreshing and nostalgic. Would I or could I frequent this establishment - No. Was it fun for the 45 minutes we were there - Yes. This bar was packed with bar fly's, characters, gamers, mavericks and oddballs; and, I loved it! Leave it to Chicago, to have a place like this, that you probably will never see again unless you go to third world country. All I can say about Richard's Bar is WOW!!!!!!!
