My introduction to their chocolate was in sample form and I immediately bought a few pieces "to share" with my boyfriend and roommate, not divulging that I was giving them one piece each and the rest were for me. Whoops! The Chocolate Caper specializes in praline - a soft, meltier chocolate with a snappier top. It's not the sugar/nut combo you're probably picturing; the owner, Dan, explained there are different types of praline (and pronunciations) and each has its own unique identity. The bases for the pralines are almond, hazelnut, toffee almond, and peanut butter, and come in white, milk, or dark chocolate varieties. My favorites are the dark chocolate peanut butter and the dark chocolate toffee almond. I surprised myself in enjoying the milk chocolate hazelnut better than the dark; given the choice between milk and dark I almost invariably prefer the latter. Each variety has a different drizzle pattern and there is a photo guide included in each box so you don't have to guess and can save your favorites for last. CC also offers other confections, and they recently obtained a liquor license and are in the process of developing wine tastings. My only warning is that once you stop in, you'll want to stop in again, and again, and again - their unique offerings and lovely staff will keep you coming back for more. read more

I heard about this local spot from a friend and came to check it out. The store isn't very large but everything was high quality. I was looking for some gifts and found these delightful hot chocolate balls (so cute and with so many flavors: milk chocolate, dark chocolate and peppermint), chocolate covered ginger treats, Wisconsin shaped chocolate, truffles and toffee. Hands down the best chocolate I've ever had! They stick to what they know which is decadent, melty, praline chocolate which have the same consistency as truffles. Rich and smooth - so heavenly! Recently under new ownership, they are slowly beginning to experiment with other options such as chocolate dipped beer and wine gels with IPA, Stout, White Merlot and Reds, as well as peanut butter pralines! I've had the dark and milk peanut butter pralines and let me tell you, it'd warrants a drive from Madison for - it's so good! The shop is in a rather unassuming store front in the downtown area. You walk in and notice the medals that they have one for their chocolate hanging on the door handle. Second thing is the wonderful smell in the shop of high quality chocolate. The owners Claude and Ellen are wonderful people and were willing to talk about their chocolate as well as anything that was fun or interesting. Very warm people. We will definitely be going back! This place looks like nothing....but it is everything! This is the store to go to if you JUST NEED CHOCOLATE NOW. It's an addiction, I know, but here's the place to get that fix. Rich, carmelly chocolate that is fudgy and melty and all-together so intense that it takes me four servings to go through a single piece. i LOVE THIS PLACE. It's small and it's nothing fancy in decor but those chocolates are the best around! I've been to switzerland and I felt like I was back there again. The man that owes it with his wife is such a sweetheart, I could have talked to him all day if I didn't have to get back to work. I can hardly wait to get back there for more, there's nothing better than great service, greatttt chocolate and down to earth people. For superior chocolate their pricing isn't that bad. Hands-down the best Chocolate I ever had. We started coming here when we moved to Oregon when Claude and Ellen owned it. The new owners have definitely kept the chocolate delicious! As well as adding some additional goodies. We live in Michigan now but get a bunch to take home every time we visit, and make an order at Christmas as well. It is just so delicious and unique. I have not come across any chocolate so delicious and remotely similar in any of the other local chocolate shops I have visited throughout the US. This place is locally owned and one of a kind! I'm not a gourmet or dessert snob or anything, but this is the best chocolate I've ever had. When Claude and Ellie (the previous owners) retired and sold the business, I was concerned that the quality or approach might suffer, but it's still great stuff, and now they stay open most of the summer, as well as adding some baked goods to their menu. They haven't perfected the animated, anti-establishment rants that Claude was known for, but they have time. The only downside is that they have ruined me for normal, cheap chocolate. It's hard to go back to Hershey's after tasting bliss.... read more

I love the chocolate caper and I'm so glad they're in Oregon. The new owners are very nice and have better hours than the previous owners had in the past (which were sporadic to say the least). Now I can get a good chocolate fix almost any time! The praline chocolate is melt in your mouth good. I just bought a couple milk chocolate bunnies there for Easter for only $5.99 each and good size. I would much rather give my kids some quality chocolate than load them up with chemical-laden stuff for not much less money. Now I should go to bed and stop thinking about their awesome chocolate before I bite a bunnies head off... :) read more
