We were told that the trip would take 4 hours and we planned the day around that. We are not experienced kayakers but we finished in just under 2 hours.... The trip was uneventful, a leisurely float. We saw a blue heron and some geese. If you are looking to kayak in a wilderness setting, this part of the river is not for you. Nothing against the company but in 2 hours we had to dodge upwards of 100+ people floating on tubes not to mention flotillas of other kayakers and canoers. And the end of the trip we had to wait 40 min to be picked up and be brought back to were we parked and the driver was speeding and had the radio blasting--not very professional. The tandem kayak we were in was in good condition, name brand although the paddles were cheap. The star rating here is due to inconvenient transportation setup and driver professionalism (or lack thereof)

My husband is an outdoors enthusiast and has tons experience camping so I felt comfortable knowing that if this experience was less than glamping (i.e. a place to plug in my hairdryer - btw bring a hair dryer and conditioner) I would be fine. Well, it more than met my requirements for glamping. We stayed in Trappeur Tent #45 right by the brook. There's enough distance from adjacent tents that you do have privacy without feeling totally secluded in the woods. Each tent has electricity, running (potable) water, flushing toilet, a shower and basic toiletries. There's no cooking in the tent so be prepared to do all your meals on the outdoor grill. The kitchen area is fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, bowls, glasses, utensils, cutting board, colander, cutting board and basic cleaning products. There's a small refrigerator but no freezer. We had a cooler that was stocked with food and ice that we stored in the bear proof outdoor storage unit. There's a fire pit that we used every day. NH has a strict law about bringing wood in from out of state, so you do need to purchase wood from them. All the details about this are on the website when you register. You have an option to bring your own linens, but we opted to have them provide it by registering for the Zen rate (again all is explained on the website). Our unit had one queen size bed and two bunk beds. There was a portable floor fan in the unit for cooling. We didn't need it because it got to the lower 50's at night and upper 70's during the day. The tent does have a wood stove for heating that we did not use. You do have to bring your own towels for the pool. On site there's a basketball court, playground, ping pong table, corn hole, foosball table, bocce ball court, movie night, other activities like yoga, kayaks and tubes for rent, and a variety of board games. You cannot drive your car to your unit but there are plenty of carts in your assigned parking area to haul your stuff from your car to your unit. You do have to dispose of your trash at their localized trash site which is a bit of a walk from your unit. OK it was a bit of an effort but I got my steps in for the day with that task alone. The food truck is great. We enjoyed crepes and coffee each morning. There are also muffins and smoothies. I am told that the pizza is quite good. The food truck opens at 7:30 AM. Check when you register what their hours of operation are since they run two shifts - morning and afternoon/evening. With all those details I was most impressed and grateful for the beauty of the site as well as the genuine friendliness of the staff. You are in the middle of the woods in the White Mountains "roughing" it with all the amenities. I was truly at peace and had some of the best sleep in months. We're heading back in September to do some hiking. I'm sure I'll rattle on about that experience in a few months. Just go! Have fun!

We wanted a quiet place to camp following death of our 13 year old dog. This place had no peace or…read morequiet. Kids screaming and crying at all hours of day and night. Swearing arguments and yelling heard from adults as well. Canvas tent with bathroom was damp, dark, gloomy and not entirely clean. Advertised that there was a stove but this site only had gas grill with a rusty gas burner on one side. When we arrived....on a weekday....the kids screaming in pool really surprised us. It seems no parent intervention takes place here. You have to wheel your stuff with a cart to your unit from parking area to reduce car noise and headlights, yet you can clearly hear big rigs screeching down nearby turnpike all night long..And kids are running around with flashlights til well after quiet hours....10pm. So what's the difference? It was so far from what I expected. I normally camp at NH state parks where you arrive to a clean, recently raked site. Not here. Site covered in damp leaves, mud, trash, and pieces of glass AND the screen door to our tent was ripped on one side. Firepit had a broken glass bottle in it. Never, ever again. For the price they charge....nearly 500 for a Mon and Tues night late August, I'd expect cleanliness, some type of management intervention to deal with off leash dogs, ridiculous noise levels, and a guarantee you won't have to deal with others dirt and trash...this includes dirty silverware in our "kitchen". Must also add that there are no chipmunks, squirrels, or birds. Possibly due to the poison bait stations behind each unit. I guess to ensure rodents don't enter through ripped screen but meanwhile they're killing off other forest dwellers. Maybe it would be more "environmentally conscious" to form stricter rules about unattended food in tents. What a very expensive joke. Never again. It will always be remembered as Helltopia to us.

A bus will bring you to the drop off point. The river is very slow and had to apply some effort at points to keep moving. There are various sections along the river to stop at. The first few times we had large groups of people with us, all meeting up to go down the river together. They accommodated us the best they could and we did the rest. You can rent tubes, cooler tubes, dog tubes, kayaks, canoes and more. They provide you with a life jacket and ticket time to be ready for your shuttle. They then shuttle you to a drop off location along the mighty Saco River. They transport you, your tube, and all your belongings right to the drop off. You can choose the length of your trip upon purchase. There is a one mile, three mile, and five mile trip down river. You can choose to repeat the trip, as long as there is time before they close for you to do so. They open early, like 8 am and close at 5 pm. The river is beautiful, and varies in depth throughout the trip. There's plenty of beaches to stop and enjoy a packed lunch or a snack. Please stay off of any beach that says "private" as they are not part of the rental companies lands. There's a couple of rope swings to stop at, but remember, you're stopping with no liability on the rental company. They are not liable for much on these trips. You sign paperwork ahead of time, stating such. Their booth has some items you may need for the trip down river, such as waterproof bags, dry bags, phone bags, goggles, paddles, sunblock, sunglasses and more, of course all priced slightly up. I really enjoy renting and tubing with this company, they've got it down after all these years. Definitely a really fun thing to do during a hot summer day.

I was intimidated looking at it but once I got my foot grip down, I was OK to continue. There are slippery spots due to being running water off of the mountain the views are breathtaking. The sounds of the babbling Brooks and the little waterfalls are beautiful. and just being in the woods there is just amazing. Everything is alive and I mean that by saying not lots of dead trees around I mean there is dead trees, but it's so much alive that you don't really see the dead trees. it's very dense woods. we did not take the trail that leads all the way to the top of Mount Chocorua (piper) we had a very challenging night the night before with our other tenants of the building so it was best that we had not done that without doing that we had a 7 1/2 mile hike had we included that it probably would've been a 9 mile hike. We took our time and had small 15 minute breaks and in total it took us about 6 1/2 hours, but it can definitely be done in four if you do straight hike up straight hike down. Going down liberty Trail. It was a little bit more wet and mushy because you're going down the mountain and the streams are running down mountain but I didn't care. I have hiking shoes that are intended to get wet so and you can find alternate routes through the woods if you choose to do so it still wouldn't deter me from coming back For the parking you do have to drive down what looks to be a snowmobile trail. Don't be afraid of that. Yes, there is parking enough of it directly where your GPS leads you. I hope you all enjoy your hike

A trip along this National Scenic Byway is not just about the drive, it is about the journey and the places you stop along the way. A typical drive with multiple stops will take at least half a day. We stayed in "Dancing Bear"- perfect size for us (a couple) and our small pup! Loved the little screened in porch to sit outside and relax- and the walking trails were fun for the pup! Two bundles of firewood and a starter were on our porch when we arrived- and two comfy adirondack chairs and a hammock outside . It was pretty rainy so we didn't get much outside time - but there's also a little grill for use outside the cabin too- and a nice picnic table to eat at. Very close and easy access to the Kankamangus - we will be back for sure !
