I've been eating at the clay pit for over 16 years and now that I live in Texas, I make sure I visit every time I'm in town. The food is excellent! Excellent! Every friend I've convinced to accompany me has fallen in complete love with the food. Seriously, do not eat all day before going here because you will stuff yourself on the buffet. Ate here for the first time. I had the lunch buffet. I thought the food was fresh and hot and spiced correctly. I always mix rice, chicken tikka, and saag aloo..with the mint sauce and tamarind as a topping. As good as any I've had. And I'm from Southern CA..so I've had a lot. I went to this restaurant by coincidence and it became my favorite restaurant. They have the best biryani I've ever had in my life especially with their Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan. The staff are very nice, kind and funny. Even the manager he once came towards me and my friend and told us if we want more different things in the restaurant. This is one of the best spots in the boro. They have a lunch & dinner buffet that's seriously mouthwatering. Incredible chicken dishes, veggie dishes, salads and Indian desserts (yum rice pudding). I always go for the chicken tikka masala, spinach (saag) and eggplant(bharta? I think). Can't forget some garlic naan-bread and raita (yogurt cucumber dip). Update! Clay Pits has remodeled their space and now the buffet is more extensive and self serve. Much nicer .... As for the complaint about tea below...this establishment is run by punjabis and the tea is exactly like what I have in Punjab when I visit my family. It isn't the Gujarati type of tea that has ginger and spices and is thick etc...punjabis drink their tea "perfumed" and with heated (never boiled) milk and sugar. First of all I am INDIAN, second of all Clay Pit is very good. The buffet is "pretty americanized" -who could blame them -this is Murfreesboro for heaven's sake ... most people assume they use "curry powder" around here -right? If you want authentic, order off the menu and tell them you are looking for how they cook for themselves ... their chole batura for example is as good as it gets on any continent, their kabobs and pakoras are awesome. I like the bangan, saag, and most meat dishes and I adore their keema samosas. They cater more than any other Indian restaurants in TN for INDIANs and it is for a good reason. I used to eat here a minimum of 3 times a week while I was in grad school at MTSU. For the price, you can't beat the buffet. Every day was different, as they only really have 2 or 3 dishes that never change. Naan is always fresh and they have gulab jamun! Delicious, freshly cooked, nice blend of spices and selections of things to eat. The mutton was a unique surprise and it was cooked perfectly with a complex blend of spices that made it scrumptious. I went here for a late lunch around 3:30PM today. I had been meaning to go by this place for over a year now, and I'm glad that I did. Although no one was there this late in the afternoon, the food was still GREAT. I got the $6.99 special, rice with veggies, lentils, and spinach. Although it had probably been sitting for a couple of hours since lunch, it was still extremely good. I love Indian food anyway, but this place is great... and in Murfreesboro! I was disappointed. We came it around 4pm, drove in from Franklin for some tea and snacks. We asked for masala tea and samosas. Samosas we ok, nothing great. But they don't know how to make indian tea, which is sad. it was like flavored milk. When they asked, I told them candidly and they did offer to make me another. But if bad tea took 20 mins to prepare, I cant imagine what it would take for them to try and make some good tea. So I declined the generous offer. Also, bathrooms aren't all that clean. Service was just OK, its as if they didnt care for the one table they had to serve. Overall, don't feel like coming back here from Franklin. read more

This is a nice choice in the sea of bland chain options in Murfreesboro. The dining room is really low-rent, very hole in the wall, and the menu is very short, but they had what I like plus a few more adventurous options. I got chicken saag and my husband got chicken korma, with rice and garlic naan. The main dishes were large and tasted great (no salt problems like previous reviewers have, and no lack of flavor even though we asked for very mild heat.) The naan was spectacular. The sweet tea was not what I expected - made with honey and may have been green instead of black but I liked it. The food came out slow but the service was apologetic and very attentive. I felt the price was a little high for two people but would have been just right, had we shared a main dish instead of getting two. We will definitely return when we next visit town. read more

Walked in the door and staff acted as if we were troubling them by even being there.. servers just looked at each other and said "do you want em or do I have to do it?" We love Clay Pit so much. It's a must have at least once a month! It's always easy to get a seat in this place. Clay Pit is the only place in this town for true Indian cuisine. They offer an authentic Indian a la carte menu and a (somewhat Americanized) buffet, complete with Tandoori Chicken, Mango chicken, and veggies in various yummy sauces and curries. Plenty of vegetarian choices! The family that runs Clay Pit is super friendly. They also do lots of catering. Grab yourself an ice cold Indian beer, dig into some Garlic Naan, dip your Tandoori chicken into the mint sauce, and watch some genuine Cricket on the big TV! read more

I love this place! It's a small establishment right next to little caesars. If you aren't looking for it you could easily pass it by. They have a buffet set up, and as small as it may look they have several choices! It's really good food; I could never complain. It's always hot and fresh. They have bread you can order, as well as entrees and things like that. I really just do the buffet though, there's more than enough there! It's fairly expensive but it's not everyday you can find decent Indian cuisine, and the clay pit has just that, if not considerably more. When we opened the bags of food to distribute there was plenty of confusion and lots of guesswork as to which sealed container of sauce went to which person as they were not labeled in any way.
