Back in PA we enjoyed some wonderful Indian food in our area. This was our first experience at an Indian restaurant in Murfreesboro. We liked it a lot! Both our server and the owner were very hospitable - they welcomed us and treated us like family while we were there. We ordered a few main dishes that we love (and that the kids like too). We also tried an appetizer that was new for us: vegetable fritters (Vegetable Pakora). They were great! Now, this place had big shoes to fill, since we really loved our old favorite in PA, but we were not disappointed by anything we tried here. Everything was delicious. Get your kids some rice pudding. The food was hot and good portion size for the price but the butter chicken lacked much flavor besides spice which we got as spicy. We have had their tiki chicken marsala which was the same way. Dinner tonight was disappointing. For a Saturday night the place was empty. Service was not good. Waitress would disappear when we wanted to reorder drinks. Plates were not getting cleared. Simple drinks and beers took forever despite an empty restaurant. Waitress forgot to bring things that was part of our order. We have eaten here many times before and the food tonight was lacking its usual flavor (bland). Not sure what is going on or if just a bad night overall for them but our experience was just so-so. Two things highlight this review. First, this is the restaurant on Memorial Blvd, and it has been completely revamped. There is another Clay pit on NW Broad, by the same family, but completely different. This restaurant on Memorial specializes in Street Food! Street Food? Yes, Indian Street Food. Not only has the menu and dining concept changed, they remodeled the inside. Since Street Food in an Indian restaurant was new to me, I am going to focus my review on the food. Go there. We went for my wife's birthday and our entire party was happy. She ordered the Poutine. Wait, what?! Isn't poutine a CANADIAN traditional dish. Yes, but this was a great fusion food. She considers herself a poutine fancier. And, she loved it. Traditional poutine is an order of French Fries, with cheese curds and brown gravy. This was like it, but different. The first thing she noticed was that the fries themselves were seasoned with Tika seasoning, and so was the entire dish. There was enough to feed two, and she totally enjoyed it. They used paneer instead of cheese and she lauded it as wonderful. My youngest adult son got the Clay Pit Special Bhaji Pav. Don't worry neither he or I ever heard of it, but based on the server's recommendation and his gastronomic curiosity, he went for it. It is traditional in Mumbai (I just researched it to figure out what it is) Quoting a website, "The recipe is an amalgamation of vegetables spiced with a unique blend of spices known as pav bhaji masala and served with a soft bread roll aka pav." It was served with chopped red onion. He hates red onion and just left it out. Peas, potato and wonderful unique spices make up this stew like dish, served with traditional bread. I also took the server's recommendation in blind trust for my selection, Samosa Chaat. Just looking at the portion size that was presented, I proclaimed that this was a dish for a family of four. I was not far off as we took more than half of it home. Again, I have to turn to the internet to find out exactly what was in this wonderful dish. Again, the internet comes to my rescue. "Chaat is a broad term used for all Indian street food. It's mostly spicy, tangy and topped with yogurt and chutneys. ..has layers of chickpea curry and crunchy samosa". Sure. What is Samosa? "Samosas are savory pastries served as a snack or as appetizers. They are stuffed with lightly spiced potato and deep-fried until crispy and golden." Oh. This dish had them under the stew, not separate and I loved it. Our other two diners were not as adventurous. The both ordered wraps, one was Schezwan Paneer and Chicken creation. Yes, Schezwan, the food from China is incorporated here. Evidently, there is a lot of cross over between Chinese and Indian food. Second of the wraps ordered was the Chicken Egg. So if you are adventurous, go there. If you are not, go there anyway. You can enjoy "safer" wraps, rice or noodle dishes, wings, and one I've not heard of yet - Chinese Curry. I'll be back. Always love coming here and getting the buffet. They have everything labeled at the buffet and the staff definitely take pride in this restaurant. All I can say is WOW. The food we had this time was incredible. We ordered garlic naan, paneer bhurji, and chicken biryani--ALL amazing. The paneer bhurji, which is a shredded paneer tomato dish, came with cilantro cumin rice. As someone who likes heat, medium spice was the perfect level for me. It was completely empty on a Wednesday night, so our food came out fast and fresh. The inside of the restaurant is clean with plenty of booth seats. When you're done with your meal, you pay at the front desk. I could not be happier with a meal. read more

The service started off slow but quickly picked up when the owner decided to help. We were a group of 8, there were a few dishes ordered but I only ate the Desi Chicken Curry which was excellent. They ran out of Naan and we went in about 30 minutes before they were closing. The staff and owner provided an alternative and they provided plenty of it. The Clay Pit is another one of my favorite Indian Restaurants in Middle Tennessee. They have wonderful food and a great lunch buffet. Though I have to say that I like ordering al la carts most times. Their Lamb Vindaloo is sensational with all of the spices and tender lamb. The eggplant baharta is phenomenal. And of course chicken or lamb Tikka masala. I will say that for al la carte orders it can take some time, but it is well worth the wait. They always use fresh ingredients and pride themselves on excellence. Great smells as you walk in. Limited parking beside Little Caesar's. Great service by people who care. The garlic naan that comes with the buffet is amazing - light, slightly-charred. Great detail. The buffet is small but packed. The salad has a special mint dressing that is clearly homemade. The yellow basmati rice is kept fresh. But the mains are outstanding. Subtle heat in the tandoori chicken. Real yellow and red curry in the dishes. Perfect for the slightly adventurous, and a great value. Worth a drive across town to try. read more

I've had Indian food all over the country and this was some of the worst I've ever had. Even the rice was off. Here, you can count the number of Indian restaurants on one or two fingers, so I can't be too picky. I think this is Americanized Indian food in the same vein as Americanized Chinese food. The flavors are not as bold and strong as they otherwise would be. The service is friendly, and they were training a new server when I went. It's restaurants like this that help increase the diversity of the restaurant scene and I am glad they are here. read more

So I guess I had to start out 2019 with a hidden treasure... Since the other Indian places were closed, we drove a bit further to this little gem of a place. We don't live near Murfreesboro, but we're visiting. Is it crazy to think of moving closer just to be near your favorite food? Probably... but this may be an exception. The place is small, quaint but with a well thought out layout for the buffet. Everything flows well. We were promptly greeted cheerfully and asked which kind of bread we would like. We were not disappointed... it was fresh with crispy outsides and bubbly insides with just a hint of salt combined with garlic. The vegetable pakoras were a crispy ball of crunchy fried vegetables that made your eyes roll towards the back of the head. Saag (spinach) and daal (lentils) don't usually sound tasty but I went back for seconds and thirds. There two kinds of rice could not have been any more fresh! We finished it off with the donut-ball-like dessert that really helped cool off the palate from the other spices that had built up. On top of this it was only $10 a person for all you can eat! This was such a lucky find and I wish I could come back more often.... Wow.. just wow! read more

Good food is always great to have, but when it's accompanied by great customer service as well, it's out of this world. You can be sure you'll have excellent food and service each time you come here. I've only been here during the day, so I'm not positive if the buffet is served all day or not, but everything on the buffet is always good. They make sure to have variety of meat dishes as well as vegetarian. The garlic naan to go with your meals is delish. I like to finish with the kabuli naan which is stuffed w fruits and cherries. 'T was the night of christmas. Didn't have any food at home so we decided to try the famed Clay Pit that a everyone raves about, also because it was probably one of the only places openon Christmas day. Called them at 8:25 asked whether they would be taking order now for pick up. Response: " we close in 15 minutes" Me: " Ok, but my question is, will you take order for pick up?" Talks offline:" okay what do you want ? " So I gave the order, confirmed again. I will be there in 15 minutes( at this point "15 minutes have been repeated about15 times) So I dressed drove there and reached in 17 minutes. I go in, it's completely dark, and was greeted with a very stern disapproving face ( as if to say how dare you call me and order food) was told the amount paid it and left. Reached home and lo and behold the food's uncooked and smells raw ( yeah indian food in 15 minutes, alarm bells should have been ringing all over). So my issue is this: 1. Unprofessional behavior: if you can't make it just say so. Dont try to make a quick buck selling bad stuff especially when it's food. 2. Indian food is a bit hard to find around here, but this place does it right. Authentic flavors and a lot of choices will have you wanting too many things to count. Prices are a little high, but portions are large and great for sharing. Wait time can be a bit long, so be ready for that but it's because they get so busy from being awesome. read more

I am sorry to say this place is terrible. The food was poor quality and the Buffet was not kept fresh. I am also very sorry to say I feel I was ignored and given poor service because of the color of my skin. I am a very respectful and kind person and some of my best friends are Indian so it is painful to be treated that way. Also I know I was overcharged for no reason. I had the lunch buffet which was old and bad and a chai tea that I was never served. I was charged 20 for this horrible meal from people who cannot respect and appreciate all of humanity. Food on lunch buffet was delicious but there should have been more of a variety for the price of $13.99. There were no pakora, no potato or other veggie dishes ( besides saag), and no raita! (unless it was the unmarked white stuff that looked more like ranch)-- and I had to wait for naan to be be brought to my table. There was no explanation about the bread, either, so I ate half my meal thinking "are they seriously not serving naan with the buffet?" Kudos to the cooks, though, for the amazing flavors of the chilli chicken, mint sauce, and that delicious garlic naan. I only wish I'd had the full experience with a pakora or two, some aloo gobi or other veg dish, and some gulab jamin for dessert. Hope owners read and take some of this to heart. With drink, tax, and tip I paid $20 for a so- so experience. Yes, it was filling, but the meal felt incomplete. read more

My husband and I were craving Indian food so of course we yelped a location close to where we were staying and found this quaint place which was convenient to us. Food was ready and full of flavor. By far the best Indian food we've had in town! You can really taste the spices here, the flavors are much more fresh and bold than other places we've been. We have enjoyed Indian restaurants all over, but this one nudges above the rest because of the vibrancy of the spices and flavors. The only reason we are giving The Clay Pit 4 out of 5 stars is because their website states that MTSU students, faculty, and staff receive a 10% discount, but when we asked while paying, we were told it was only for students (we are faculty). read more

I had a cheese dish off the menu that was very good. Three Indian beer varieties, all kinda boring. And their version of Indian hot is lightly spicy to this spicy-food lover.
