Meet my purple boots. Poetic License. Beautiful. Expensive. Impossible to put on. I took them to a cobbler by my house for a zipper and was rudely told it was an impossible job and not worth his effort. (The zipper had to go under some flap over leather in a place that was this very soft fabric and into the leather. The fabric is the reason I couldn't get leverage to pull them on.) So I did a little research and took them here. Quote: $85. No worries! We can put a zipper! Come back in a week. I come back in two. Zipper is in. I tried them on. Still no go. No worries! I am harder on my shoes than I am on my dry clean-ables...with this in mind, I will travel to the ends of the earth to salvage anything from a Steve Madden to a Jimmy Choo. Today was my first pick up at the Newton shoppe, and I will keep coming back forever. I entered through their back door and literally found myself in the midst of their work station. I brought them two pairs of haggard heals and a leather bag with a broken strap. While my bag was quoted as a $50 repair and 10 week wait from the store where I purchased it, these guys fixed it for $10 and in 3 days! My shoes were around $15 a pair and are now sporting new soles and the leather covered heals look like new! The inside is far from fancy and looks like somewhere you may expect to see elves doing the labor; they clearly are focusing on the shoes (and bags). These guys are also expert bag cleaners (Gucci at Copley even recommends them)! Anyone who can repair my mangled slippers can do wonders for you too! read more

In Paris, a leather expert at the Carrefour supermarket said simply "no" to every mangled question I attempted about the fate of my beloved bag whose strap was coming loose. Downtrodden, I walked back to the apartment and retired it for the rest of the summer. It wasn't until I returned home, and the change of seasons rekindled my longing for the rugged leather bag, that I began my search for the best cobbler around. I knew where not to go, having experienced many misadventures at the shoe repair place on Grove St. in Wellesley -- they actually cut a slice in the flap of this same bag a few years ago and tried to fix it with some **glue**!!! This was my first foray into the world of yelp and Marguerite's review lead me to the shop at the top of exit 17 off the pike. I brought the bag to the cobbler shop and the man, stashed among all the shoes, bags and various other articles crafted of dead cow, said he would fix it by Friday. Ten bucks. This information followed a long friendly conversation about the idiocy of the previous cobbler (or fraud!!) who worked on my bag. He said there is many a guy out there trying to make a buck by passing himself off as cobbler, but he's just not a cobbler. Only real cobblers can do this kind of work -- or art, if you think about it. I was so pleased with the results -- he fixed both the strap and the slice -- that I brought a pair of shoes. Again, one week, ten bucks. And again, as good as new. I'm happy to know I have a real, honest cobbler I can trust. Any trickster playing me for cash off my leather can just suck it. Your eyes wander over shelves upon shelves of tools, polishes, laces, leather, and the many purses and shoes brought in by trusting clients. This is it. Instinctively, you know is the real deal-- a cobbler truly trained in the trade of leather repair. It takes me months, sometimes years, to find The Shoe that I am looking for. No, that one is not pointy enough. No, that one is TOO pointy. The black is too black! The black is too gray! So by the time I find my soulmate (sorrynotsorry), I will repair them until there is nothing left to repair (and sometimes let them live a retirement life in my closet because I'm just not ready to let go yet). Now that you know way too much about my emotional investment in shoes-- you understand how important it is to find a cobbler that will do an excellent job. I want the stitching to perfectly match the existing stitches, the replacement heel to seamlessly align with the rest of the shoe, and my salt stains removed with a loving touch. This guy nails it every time. I've brought in six pairs of shoes, ranging from stiletto booties to men's-style oxfords, and every ailment has been repaired to perfection. The prices are reasonable and they give you a quote before completing the service, so you can decide against it if the shoe isn't worth the repair. They have a decent turnaround time (I usually pick my shoes up one week after I dropped them off). And in the event that a purse of mine was too far gone, they gave me the honest feedback and turned down the project rather than risking disappointment with a sub-par repair. I have a pair of premium men's shoes that cannot be refurbished by the company. So, it appears that The Cobbler Shop seems to be a viable option for me to getting my heel and sole and cork bed refurbished. To get the shoe fixed at the corporate headquarters, it would cost me $100 and 4 weeks. So far, The Cobbler Shop will charge me at least $85. I just now received my shoe. I had asked Larry to reduce the height of the sole by one level. THEY DID NOT HONOR MY REQUEST. Larry's son told me that this would make the shoe unlevel. I DON'T CARE ABOUT LEVEL, I asked him to do something, and he didn't do it. read more

My Frye boots had seen better days - lots and lots of better days - so I brought them to the Cobbler Shop for new soles. The fellow behind the counter perused them and pronounced he could rebuild the leather soles (which were almost completely worn away) and even out the heels (also worn away). I asked for rubber bottoms too to keep the new soles intact longer - no problem. One week later, I picked up my completely refurbished boots (sporting a nice shine, I might add), and I couldn't have been happier! These people are pros, but they're also sweet and quick with a smile. The prices are totally reasonable, and the end result is outstanding. I had the unfortunate luck of being caught with a nice pair of leather shoes in a not so nice downpour one night. After getting home and surveying the results, the damage was far worse then I had expected. Leather was extremely spotted from the water, interior lining pealing, toe scuffed; I won't turn this into a horror story, but suffice to say, just a complete mess. I stopped by this shop after reading some of the reviews, told the man behind the counter to do whatever he could to save them, and was told to return in a week to collect them. One week later, as promised, I arrived, shoes ready. What awaited me was beyond my wildest dreams. Not only was any trace of the damage gone, but I would go as far as to say the leather looked better then the day I bought them. Bill came out to something like $20, deal of the century. Paid up, and headed out, a much happier man. Place looks sketchy from the outside, and just downright horrible from the inside, but don't let that fool you. These people have this down to a true art. I later found out that many local high end stores recommend these guys for repair (Gucci, Louis, etc). They're truly that good. read more

EDIT 11/3/12: Brought a lovely, but beat-up, Marc by Marc Jacobs bag to see if the shop could repair the (significant) signs of wear and tear. The guy behind the counter was totally forthright and said it'd be at least $300 to redye the whole bag, and that it probably wasn't worth it. The guy's honest and knowledgeable, and I appreciate that. This place really is as good as it gets. First of all, they work on some real quality shoes and bags (i.e., Gucci, Louis, etc.), so they're not going to screw up your stuff. Second, they have done everything I've asked to a T. I have a lovely pair of snakeskin flats with a leather sole that I needed to be zipsoled. After I explained what I wanted, they quoted me $40 (which is totally reasonable in my experience as compared to some $60 zipsoles at some places in the back bay and considering the shoes would wear out in about a day without them), and I came back in 2 days to perfectly done wearable flats. Third, I popped in to see if they could fix the buckle on a pair of Armani heels. I hadn't been able to fix it with pliers, and figured they might charge me $5 or $10 to do it. I came in, the owner fixed it right in front of me, and said "have a great day." I said "that's all?" He smiled and said "happy holidays!" ...he did it for FREE! Who gets anything for free these days!! That'll sure keep me coming back. Finally, both people I've encountered working there have been pleasant and helpful. A huge plus in my book. Overall, wonderful place with a great vibe and quality work to boot. read more

You know I appreciate an estimate that is correct, so when I was quoted $40 for adding a panel of leather to a pair of boots I expected that it would be $40. I can't say I'm too impressed with the service here. I brought in a pair of suede shoes to be cleaned. I had no idea what was on them, some sort of splatter. I explained I tried to clean them with a suede brush and the guy looked at me like I was the biggest idiot saying you have to use a cleaner first. Then he took them and told me he'd see what he could do, no promises. When I returned to pick them up, he had in fact cleaned them, but he removed the color from the suede in the process. He was proud of the fact that the stain was gone, but they were clearly a different color than when I brought them in. I was a little shocked, speechless really. Plus, he charged me $25, which I think is a bit much for cleaning a pair of shoes, but what can I do now? He also doesn't write the price on the claim ticket when he accepts your shoes. I shouldn't have to ask how much a service costs, it should be clear from the get go. Maybe others in the area are willing to pay whatever he wants to charge, but as a savvy consumer I like to know what I'm spending beforehand. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

My gorgeous brand new Jimmy Choo booties had an apparent issue with the heel taps (like one came off the first night I wore them and I was nearly into the nail after 5 hours of wear). Bought at Nordstrom, replaced for a second pair at Nordstrom (love Nordstrom) but the second pair had the same issue. Half a day at work and the rubber bottom on the heel taps was already peeling off. Spoke to the folks at Jimmy Choo at Copley and learned there have been issues with the heel taps the past few seasons but that The Cobbler Shop in Newton could fix them and was "the" place to go. They send everybody there and so does Louis Vuitton. So off I went with my beloved booties. The shop is actually really cool--go in through the back and you walk through their workshop. The 2 gentlemen that work there are super nice and my booties were fixed on time and VERY well. I will most definitely return for shoe and bag repairs. Check them out! read more

I bought some black suede boots. Gorgeous boots. But because my right leg is fatter than my left leg, I couldn't zip the right boot. I was going to keep them, though, no matter what. I brought my favorite tan, very worn, boots to a shop on Needham Street years ago and the owner told me that he couldn't match the color of my boots and therefore couldn't shine them. Recently they got to the point where I couldn't wear them anymore because they were so faded, and I had no choice but to throw them out. I decided to try one last ditch effort to revive them. I brought them to the Cobbler shop-- $30, and one week later, they are finally back to their original color and luster. This is a fantastic place. The owner is super nice and did an amazing job reheeling my favorite, much-abused and winter sodium-infused Target boots that I can't bear to part with. And I must say, this was a difficult job because they aren't leather, they're vinyl. He even managed to buff out some of the torn spots on the toes. When I picked them up, they looked almost new. Recently, I've been living in lazy shoeville so my cute heels have been put on hold in exchange for sneakers and anything that doesn't require effort. But, it was time to box away my winter boots recently, which means getting the winter removed from them by a cobbler. More specifically, this cobbler. I love this place. They have fixed my beloved [and, ahem, battered] leather boots for two years now and have always done an amazing job. Very nice, thorough, careful with your precious shoes, and quick. Even though I've lived in Boston for 5 years I was still packing all my heels in need of repair in my suitcase and dragging them to my go-to cobbler in DC anytime I traveled home to see family. Today I couldn't wait any longer and needed a pair repaired for a party this weekend. I have been a frequent customer of the Cobbler Shop ever since I moved here in 2013. The owner does truly great work and uses good quality materials. He is honest, reliable, knowledgeable about shoe-making and everything leather and highly skilled. I have always been very happy with his work no matter what I have brought in for a fix (shoes, belts, purses, etc.). When I dropped in at the beginning of this month (December, 2020), the business was slow. The pandemic has had a pretty hard impact on his shoe repairing business and he still needs to pay for the rent. I feel I really need to rummage my closet and find more stuff to bring to his shop. OH My God, I live all the way in Stoughton, and my friend highly recommend this place. The owner seems to be pretty nice. But this place is a totally rip off, my friend shoes got full resoling under the shoes n mines only half. My friend told me hers cost $40 for a full resoling. And this owner charge me $100 for 2 shoes for half resoling. Just because he saw me have $100 bill, i know it cost less because he forgot that 2 weeks ago when I drop it off he said is around $35-$40! N when he saw my $100 bill today he said total is $100, well I pay n I left n NEVER AGAIN. I could have go any where if is $50 for a half resoling shoes. I don't need to travel that far for it! This place is great for handbag repair. I had designer bag that was split on at a bar. The bag was light tan color that basically had water damage all over and it seemed beyond repair. I actually went to this place based on the yelp reviews. They were able to get the water damage out and because there was one little mark that is barely noticeable the guy didn't charge me the full quote.
