Work seemed fine, though the soles were glued to the uppers, not stitched as they had originally been made. Questioned that but he said it was how it was done. Wore the shoes twice and, surprise, they separated. Went back to George's little shop and he doesn't answer the door. Mailman walking by informs me that GEORGE IS ON VACATION. For boot and shoe maintenance I've never met anyone in the US who can compete with George. The price, turnaround time, and quality of the work is simply jaw-dropping. He completed a fairly sizable order in literally 1/5 the time and 1/3 the price of what I was quoted from a similarly "well reviewed" establishment. He knows what he's doing and he won't attempt to up-sell you on anything that isn't necessary. He does seem to manhandle the shoes a little bit, but at this level of service he can wear them around town for a night for all I care. Highly recommended. read more

I highly recommend George's Shoe Repair, the best cobbler that I have found in Boston. George is a shoe craftsman. He completed impeccable repairs on a few pair of shoes, which looked like new, when I got them back. George is knowledgeable, kind, professional, and forthright. Finding George's Shoe Repair can be a little tricky, the first time. 120 Union Park Street is a residential address, and there is no signage for George's Shoe Repair on the outside of the building. There's an exterior staircase that goes down, just a few steps, below street level. Walk down those stairs, ring the buzzer, and you'll enter George's Shoe Repair. There is no wonder why George has 5 stars on yelp!! He is amazing I had a pair of Frye boots for 5 years that i wore in all weather and were on the verge of being thrown out! The leather was cracked and discolored from salt and winter wear, the heel was worn down to the wood and the soles were coming off making it difficult to walk! George fixed all of these and made them look brand new for only $55!!! This was half the price some of the other shoe repair shops quoted me! I chose to bring a pair of shoes to get the heels replaced after reading that George's shoe repair is one of the top cobblers in Boston. I live in Milton so we had to drive--there is no easy parking in the area as George's is on a street permitted for residents only (all times). At the end of Union Park, at Albany, there are metered spots. Note, there is signage so you could easily miss where George's is if you did not have the address (120 Union Park). The shop is located in the basement apartment. The lady inside saw us walking around lost, and so she opened the door to greet us (thank you!). We were a little lost! I dropped off my shoes, and she looked them over. She said the soles still had life in them but the heels would need replaced. They said that it would be ready Friday (it is Tuesday) but would call when the shoes were ready. Cash or check for payment when shoes are picked up. Well... I got a call from George the next day (!) indicating that the shoes were ready for pick up. I was amazed how quickly they were done. The shoes were perfectly re-heeled and they even polished up the shoes. I feel like I have a new pair of shoes. The total cost was $30, which I felt reasonable (it would have been $25 back in Chicago). I am a happy customer and will definitely be back with my other shoes! read more

Unbelievably good cobbler. My trusty waterproof leather Northface boots - over three years old now - have been all over the world with me. My last trip finally wore a hole through the bottom of the heel on the right boot, and almost all the way through the heel on the left. I could feel the dampness on the sidewalk :( Another cobbler downtown estimated $65 to repair my boots and 3-4 days. Instead, I called George, who graciously offered to pick up my boots. The next day, he called me to say they were done and arranged to drop them off at whatever time was convenient for me. He was incredibly nice and professional. The boots are repaired so beautifully they literally look brand new. He rebuilt the entire heel while maintaining the waterproofing that make these boots so precious to me. He polished them and conditioned the leather - for free - and delivered my boots to my doorstep. Total cost? $20. I paid him as much extra as I could, though for the quality of his work, he could easily double his prices and I'm sure he wouldn't lose a single client. Thank you so much, George. read more

One of my best friends highly recommended George to me when the soles split on my favorite boots. George had replaced the soles on her boots for $20, so I figured it was worth seeing if he could work some magic on mine as well. His shop is a little out-of-the-way in the South End, but it wasn't too bad of a hike from my work, so I went over on a lunch break one day. Based on all the excellent reviews here, I expected George to be polite and forthright, and he was! He introduced himself, took one look at my boots and admitted that he would not be able to fix them. These soles have air compartments, and he said anything he did to them would not last because of that particular construction. I had figured that might be the case, but I still appreciated how upfront he was about the possibility -- only true craft masters admit when something is beyond their abilities. And based on the literal *dozens* of bags of pristine-looking shoes he had repaired around the shop, George is, indeed, a master. So even though he couldn't help me with those boots, I would absolutely go back to him with future shoe ailments. read more

I dropped them on a Friday and he said they'd probably be ready on Monday or Tuesday, but that he'd call when ready for pickup. He called on Thursday, and I went down that evening. George did an AMAZING job repairing my Frye riding boots. My boots were severely damaged by salt, the heels were worn down, and there were multiple holes in the soles. It took George a week to make my shoes look brand new (cost $75) and I'm extremely pleased with the outcome. I'll definitely bring shoes to George in the future. Bear with me - this update is based on the experience my GF had. She brought boots to George after I raved and showed off my boots that were repaired extremely well. She had to return them after the first pickup because he well.. didn't do the repair. There was a hole in her sole (hah) and she asked him to replace half the sole but instead the whole thing was replaced with arguably lower quality material. He also used this shoe glue paint stuff which is fine to use but not fine to use when you get it all over the boot i.e. splatter painting. Not sure if he had a bad day or something but I was bewildered as to why my GF had spent her hard-earned money only to get a subpar experience. $300 stilettos, destroyed by Vegas, made brand-new by George, for 4% of the cost of the shoes. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear George had magical shoe-elves that helped him repair shoes. I heard about George's Shoe Repair from a friend who raved about George's cobbler skills after I mentioned my stiletto-graveyard. I never thought to repair my shoes, so I just continued to wear damaged heels until they were so worn down and damaged that I couldn't wear them anymore. I decided that, even if repairs cost as much as my favorite pair of stilettos, it was worth it. So I brought George 7 pairs of my badly damaged high-heels (3 stilettos, 2 boots, 1 stiletto boots, one 3" cowgirl boots). A couple of the heels had to be rebuilt (oops!). I expected to wait at least a week, if not 2 weeks, for my shoes to be ready. In 2.5 hours, all 7 pairs look brand new and cost only ~$100 ($6-$12 per shoe, depending on the extent of damage; the leather on the cowgirl heels had to be completely rebuilt). And if his expert cobbler skills aren't enough, George is the nicest, most polite, and most modest person. I am so thankful for George! read more

You call George, he answers and is super duper polite. You explain to him what needs to be done, you either drop it off or he will pick up from you and also deliver your shoes when complete. I brought two pairs of my husband's shoes, one pair was literally coming apart from the sole and the other pair, he didn't like b/c the heel was too high due to this additional heel protector that another cobbler added. So I call George, he comes and picks up the shoes, offered to get them to me the next day, (Saturday), I feel bad and tell him it's ok, Monday would be great. He calls Monday morning, tells me they are ready and I decide to walk over, (since I have to walk the dog anyway). The shoes look pretty darn good. For $18, it's probably the best $18 I have spent in Boston so far. Cash or personal checks only as he works from his home, (I believe) and don't have the ability to take credit cards. I called and was told my down booties would be ready the next day (almost a full two months after dropping them off). His mom was the only one there and collected the money from me. She didn't speak any English, and she wasn't the one to be upset with about the delays and the less-than-satisfactory job. So, I politely paid full price that I was quoted, but I was not pleased. If it takes two months when you were originally told one week, and the workmanship was not great, then I shouldn't have to pay the full price quoted when I dropped off the shoes. The time frame wasn't met, and the quality of service wasn't satisfactory. He picked up my cowboy boots, talked me through what the cheapest repair option would be (rather than trying to upsell me), and then delivered them to a friend so that I could have them transported to a conference in another state! He also was happy to deliver them before the check I mailed him had arrived, which is an almost unfathomable level of trust and goodwill. This was a year ago so I don't recall the exact cost, but I remember thinking that it was incredibly reasonable. For as long as I live in Boston, I won't take my shoes anywhere else. I found George through Yelp and used him for the first time last week. He was so nice and accomodating over the phone and came by my work to pick up 4 pairs of shoes. It was Friday around 10 and he said he wasn't sure if he would be able to get them back to me by 5 or not. (The same day??) I told him not to worry and he could drop them off on Monday as I was in no rush. The leather was cracked on 3 of the pairs and just needed a good shining and some TLC. George charged $4/pair. The 4th pair needed the same thing, plus a new heel - for $10!! 4 pairs of shoes came to $22 and they look brand new. You can't beat that price and especially not with that kind of service! South Boston charged $20+ per pair so I can guarantee I'll be calling George on a regular basis for all my shoe repair needs. read more
