Great little cafe for breakfast or lunch! We seem to keep finding the old parts of town when we are out exploring .... actually totally by accident. They also tend to be some how associated with a town square....anyways, just a side note on where The Coffee Break is located. Counter service where they have menus (food and drink) ... place your order and find a seat. There are about 7 - 8 tables to choose from, not a ton of space, but probably won't have a wait too often. People did come in while we were there to get order to go as well. The crew working were all really friendly and made menu recommendations. I went with the pancake and a side of hash browns "all the way". My wife had the breakfast burrito with grits on the side. We were both really pleased, in fact the pancake was outstanding!! The grits, for my wife, were a little too runny and pretty much passed on eating those. Outside of that the experience was good, prices were reasonable .... we'd recommend if you find yourself in the area. read more

Tucked away in the middle of Shelbyville Public Square's southern block is a cozy home of coffee and pastry: The Coffee Break On The Square. Open for breakfast and lunch service, you'll find a small town kitchen whose pastries will rival those you'll find at world-class urban eateries. Yep, they're baked onsite. And they cater (so you might enjoy goodies after the shop closes!) I'd been there some years past as a new state resident and tourist-at-large. A recent nighttime event with friends and the owners found me thankful for freshly made apple dumplings and coffee between thunderstorms. It kept me awake for the drive home. Another trip back during business hours is now a necessity. Your mileage may vary depending upon how you process caffeine and sweet comfort food. Had the cafe existed generations ago, one might even wonder whether it's impact could have led to development of a Tennessee Jitter Horse. Strolling Jim may have never strolled out and Midnight Sun may not have slept at all. Then again...the food is good enough that folk just might be found taking a running walk around the square on occasion! read more

If every county seat had A Coffee Break shop, the world would be a little better place. When I came into town, I had 15 minutes and a strong need for caffeine. I found Coffee Break in downtown Shelbyville on the south side of the town square, and found friendly faces ready to serve. I asked for a favor, and they readily helped me out. Their Peppermint Patty coffee drink was great. Peppermint just suits coffee well, in my mind. The price was good. The store itself is clearly what used to be an alley that was closed up with a front and back, and the brick walls on either side, gave it a rustic charm. I wish this place was in Nashville: it's that good. read more

This is my usual morning stop for a latte and side of bacon. The staff knows my order before I even place it. Everyone is courteous and they really make my children feel special. Brandy is an amazing cook as is Edwin. They are decently priced and the best breakfast place around. The chicken salad is one of my lunch time favorites. Okay, but not the greatest coffee shop I've ever been to. The Coffee Break seems more geared towards a breakfast/lunch spot that also serves coffee, as opposed to a coffee place that serves food. They do have some outside seating on the sidewalk, but when I visited you'd have to approach the doorway from up wind because the smokers sitting out there made getting in an unpleasant experience. I will say the Sumatran coffee I had was excellent and inside seating was comfortable and quiet. read more

The food and specialty coffee drinks are pretty great! However I do feel like they're a bit pricy for what you get. A chicken wrap (chicken, cheese, sauce in a tortilla - no veggies, didn't come with?), a drink and a small scoop of potato salad was $10, more with tip. It was tasty but not really something you'd expect to pay that much for. I came back on another occasion to try their specialty coffee drinks and the Iced Java Chip drink I had was good, very sweet and thick, but again the $7 price tag for what would have been a tall at Starbucks seemed a bit much. The atmosphere was nice and everything was clean and cozy - definitely worth checking out but too pricy to make it a regular stop. There is a PokeStop in range of their dining room, though!
