This is the cutest little Korean Cafe I've ever been to and would highly recommend this to anyone. I always get the mango snowflake and the custard filled mini fish bread whenever I go and they're always really great together. I always make a stop here whenever I'm in town as well as one last stop before I leave to get some of the fish shaped bread to take on my trip. Super cute place -- great to have a coffee shop you can work in during COVID, and their hours are also great. I drove up from Atlanta, so my expectations were high. Tons of private study spaces, the armchair-type chairs are insanely comfortable and the ambience is really cool. As others have mentioned, it is usually busy so it can get a bit loud, and music is loud enough it could be hard to have a video call/watch a video or listen to your own music -- also, for a coffee shop, they had very few outlets for chargers and I could see it being a challenge to read on a non-screen device once the sun goes down. Ordered an iced coffee, it was great and no complaints at all. Croissant waffles are amazing and their maple ice cream lives rent free in my head. I love the inside of this coffee spot! It is really cozy and they even have separate rooms for parties of eight or more people to sit in and drink coffee and lounge. I like the sitting room because I am currently getting my Masters degree and I can take my laptop there and just sit in my own corner and be really relaxed while I do work. This is a personal preference. I just prefer stronger bolder coffee. Their coffee wasn't bitter or sour. It just wasn't for me. It was milder with a hint of citrus. As I have said before Asian coffee houses tends to serve more tea like coffee than the bold strong coffee that we are accustom to here in the west. (As a side note: most coffee places in Asia-i.e. Japan, Taiwan, China-I've never been to Korea so I can't say for sure but I assume they are also the same-which is that they don't open until at least 10:30 AM. So this can only lead us to conclude that coffee joints are more for the experience than say for the caffeine.) Coffee shops in so far as the concept is almost always the same. Buy the drink. Drink gets made. Drink the drink. Spend hours upon hours there and simply do XYZ. Starbucks, Caribou (if you find one!), even Dunkin Donuts are all in that same type of style. Come in, buy, wait, served, drink, leave and that's it. Then you have the local joints. Even the local franchises are like this but more often than not, local places have more character than the cookie-cutter style layouts and Coffee By Hand is definitely a place with some great character and should be a place that needs to be recognized by the greater Atlanta community. It's a Korean coffee/tea shop that also is a hub for social gatherings if the Sweet Hut a few doors down gets crazy crowded and that's almost 90% of the time. This place also serves some Korean favorite drinks on top of the regularly known lattes, mochas, and macchiatos. The ambiance is spectacular here. It does seem cookie cutter if you are familiar with how Korean coffee shops are designed but more or less there is still more character here than your typical Starbucks corporate chain coffee joints. The hot tea drinks are definitely straight out of the Korean landscape coffee/tea culture. My favorite is the adlay tea which is this walnut sweet milk tea where they have crushed walnuts in it which is a Korean favorite on top of the regular coffee drinks but this place has those jujubee teas, ginger teas, adlay tea, and other such which adds a different variety to your coffee drinking experience if you don't want that caffeine hit. They also have the quintessential baked goods familiar with Korean/Taiwanese/Chinese people. They also serve shaved ice as well as the Korean street foods that are popular as well. The only downside is that it gets very very crowded but that should be expected when it's a great design, great location (right off Pleasant Hill and Old Norcross), and serves a variety of stuff. If you want to go off the old beaten path and can't stand the dumb looking mermaid with horribly burnt coffee that Starbucks gives you, Coffee By Hand is a fantastic alternative. It is pricey as a 16oz adlay tea is like $4.30 something with tax but then again, so is Starbucks with their horribly tasting coffee. Highly recommend this place but make sure you can stand waiting for an empty spot. read more

The Coffee By Hand is a Korean cafe that opened May 7, 2015 in Gwinnett Station, the same shopping center with Sweet Hut and a bevy of Asian restaurants (it's next door to 89 Hot Pot), in Duluth. Like other Korean bakeries and cafes in metro Atlanta (e.g. Mozart, Tree Story, White Windmill), this is a cute, whimsical, and somewhat hip cafe specializing in various sweet beverages and snack foods and desserts. And like competitors Sweet Hut and Snowflake Tea House, both of which are located in the same strip just a few doors down, The Coffee By Hand is a great place to gather with friends and hang out. While all three (Sweet Hut, Snowflake, Coffee By Hand) serve similar stuff like bubble tea, they do have their differences. The Coffee By Hand differentiates itself by being a Korean cafe with an emphasis on coffee, Korean teas, patbingsu (Korean shaved ice), and tteokbokki (Korean rice cakes). Sweet Hut and Snowflake, on the other hand, are Chinese/Taiwanese/Malayasian businesses with more of an emphasis on tea, cakes, and baked goods. The Coffee By Hand is more of a cafe, not a bakery. The cafe has an open layout with enough seating for I guesstimate roughly 80+ customers. There are run-of-the-mill tables, several pockets of cushioned, loungy, living-room-like group seating, and a handful of nicely decorated semi-private rooms. On weekends, these rooms are reserved for groups of 3 or more people (there's one big one that's reserved for 6 or more people). I like these rooms as well as the overall chill, laid back atmosphere. Teas include chai milk, green tea and green tea latte, sweet potato latte, jasmine, chamomile, English breakfast, organic Darjeeling, rooibos and more. Korean teas include adlay (Chinese pearl barley), ginger, and chaga mushroom; fruit teas like jujube, citron, plum, pear, quince, and grapefruit; and plant/flower-based teas like Solomon's seal, corn silk, apricot flower, dandelion, chrysanthemum, and bell flower. Expect to spend about $3-4 per 16 oz serving. Bubble teas, frappes, and smoothies run closer to $5-6 per 16 or 20 oz serving (bubble teas come in 20 oz only). Flavors on these are a lot more limited than Sweet Hut and Snowflake. If you want bubble tea, I recommend going to Sweet Hut or Snowflake instead. Hot and cold coffee beverages include Americano, latte, white or dark mocha latte, caramel latte, cappuccino, white or dark mocha cappuccino, caramel cappuccino, caramel macchiato, Korean-style sweetened iced coffee, espresso (with/without foam and/or cream), and affogato (espresso with vanilla ice cream). Expect to spend about $4+ per 16 or 20 oz coffee drink and about $2+ per serving of espresso. I like the Korean-style sweetened iced coffee. It reminds me of Vietnamese iced coffee (ca phe sua da), which is made with sweetened condensed milk. The two taste very similar to me, but I'm no coffee connoisseur. If I had to do a blindfolded taste test, I'm not sure I could tell which is which. They're both good and have the sweetness and creaminess I like in an iced coffee. The espresso is good too. In general, I've found the coffee drinks here to be pleasantly strong. Bakery items are somewhat limited. They have a pastry display with a colorful assortment of cakes and macarons. Cakes are available whole ($19 small, $24 medium, $33 large, $55 extra large) and by the slice ($4-5 per slice). They have cookies, muffins, and waffles including waffle sandwiches with ham or turkey. I think the most popular food item is the patbingsu. They come in two sizes, medium ($7.99) and large ($13.99), and at least six different varieties: red bean, 5 grain, green tea, assorted fruit with strawberry syrup, assorted fruit with mango syrup, and chocolate Oreo. The patbingsu is delicious and I highly recommend it. They come topped with delightfully soft and chewy tteok/mochi rice cake pieces, sweetened condensed milk (which I'm a sucker for), and powder (green tea, 5 grain, etc.). The red beans are yummy and the shaved ice itself is delicate and refreshing. That said, I have to admit, I do like Snowflake's shaved ice better. Either way, you can't go wrong. Finally, they offer a few kinds of tteokbokki: sweet, original, spicy, and "danger spicy." These are sold at about $9 a plate. This is a popular Korean street/snack food. The bite-size slices of tteok are dense, filling, and chewy, and completely slathered in sauce. If you're looking for a more savory "Korean comfort food" type food to eat, this is the one to get. I used to come here a lot just to study and drink coffee and the coffee here is pretty decent. I love the homely feel with the soft chairs and the study atmosphere. My main problem was when I finally ordered something to eat. I played it safe and got a cream waffle (cant honestly remember the name of what I ordered). The first take away was the tray that the plate was on. It was filthy and covered in stains - that was already very strange to me (see photos) but I decided to go ahead with the waffles anyways. The waffles was awesome actually, I loved the flavor and was enjoying it ALMOST to the last bite until I realized the bottom of the waffle was covered in a thin layer of paper (i had already eaten the rest of that paper it seems). When I saw a new coffee shop in Duluth, especially in this newly resurrected plaza next to the Great Wall Supermarket lot, I got very excited. Walking in and you're immediately greeted by the most unique and unexpected atmosphere. The venue is beautiful: while slightly dim, there are private rooms (limited use on weekends, must reach the minimum number of people listed on each room), and more secluded tables. It's a great place for intimate hang outs and bonding time, for sure. I used my Scoutmob 50% off coupon, so I bought for my friends an iced Korean coffee and a hot coffee, while I got the last chocolate croissant and a latte. I saved my croissant for later but I went ahead and took a few sips of my latte. It was very foamy and seemed to lack much depth to it, which was pretty disappointing. I heated up my croissant at home: it was definitely not a dry croissant. If anything, it was very buttery, borderline overly greasy... Not impressed. So TLDR? I'd say take advantage of the Scoutmob while it lasts, but the coffee is a little pricy without the coupon: 5 for atmosphere and interior 3 for chocolate croissant 3 for latte So if you don't care for what you're eating or drinking but for the actual atmosphere of the cafe, I'd say go right ahead, because I could spend all day lounging inside. I really like the fairy light decorations and the tree in the middle of the shop. There is free wifi. The connection can get spotty at times, but overall it's pretty stable and fast enough for me to get my work done. I don't really drink coffee, but I enjoy getting the hot dark mocha latte here (it tastes like hot chocolate). I've also tried the cookie & cream, earl grey, and matcha macarons. They taste alright, better than some other places, but I wouldn't get them again because they cost $2.99 / piece. I enjoyed the croffle (croissant + waffle), a crispy and sweet dessert. My favorite thing to get here when I'm with a group of friends is the matcha bingsu. It is topped with matcha powder, red bean, mochi, and a sweet syrup drizzle. I came on a Saturday around 1pm and it wasn't too full. Plenty of parking as it's in the same plaza as Choong Man Chicken, Sweethut and a bunch of other restaurants. The interior is homey with wooden furniture and some foliage. The menu is varied with drinks, desserts and some savory food. I got the large green tea bingsu to split between 5 people. It was a good amount, none of us felt uncomfortably full afterwards. The shaved ice was made of milk. It was very soft and light. The matcha flavor was light but still present. The rice cake was nice and chewy. The red bean paste helped bring a sweetness to the ice. I've also had the fish shaped waffles with custard cream which are pretty good.
