That's challenge number one: limited hours largely catering to downtown workers who forgot to brew their own, better coffee at home. Challenge #2: cash only, no credit cards. Challenge #3: as others have said, zero about the space or employees welcomes you or thanks you for stopping in. Cafe space is classic corporate cafeteria seating, something you'd expect to see in a mall food court, with the bare minimum of carbohydrate-rich pastries, sandwiches, and coffee in a wall of pump carafes and foam coffee cups. While there's nothing wrong with a limited menu and basic store design if other elements of the cafe (service, flavor, etc) are up to par, in this case none of anything really tries much to live up to any standard of service or selection. In short, with all the other options in town Brew'd, Caleria, Life Alive, Cafe UTEC, Purple Carrot, Rosie's, Time Out, etc there's not much reason to go out of your way to work around this cafe's limited hours, run of the mill storefront, and nonchalant service. read more

Stopped by to grab a bagel one afternoon and wasn't too impressed. I walked in and there were two employees up front. It wasn't extremely inviting or warm and they kind of just said Hi and stared until I ordered something. They were out of cinnamon raisin bagels so I had a french toast bagel which was good. A big downside to me was that they don't accept debit or credit cards so I had to walk to an ATM a block away. This place has an amazing location and should be way more than what it's. The decor should be redone to maximize the interesting street views from their wonderful windows. The big disappointment is seeing a place called the coffee mill and walking in to see 10 canisters of flavored coffee's. That might have been ok in the 80s but these days the expectation is to have baristas pulling shots for lattes. I think they have that capacity as well but I wish it were more center stage. read more

I came here the other day because a friend of mine recommended this place and I am no where close to being a fan. The second I walked in the woman behind the counter made eye contact with me and didn't even greet me so I'm thinking to myself...uhhh, ok? maybe she doesn't speak English? Nope! I was wrong because another woman walks out, looks at me and didn't even greet me either which I should've just walked out. They were both having a conversation speaking English perfectly fine. However, a few minute goes by and then she asked me if I was all set and I saw a pastry that looked good and I asked the lady what it was and how did it taste...her answer..."I don't know? It's like confetti I guess." Um, ok? What a nice way to explain what is it! How am I suppose to know when it's my FIRST AND definitely will be my LAST time there. That pastry was sooo dry and soooo disgusting like the two women's attitudes. FYI, We own a business right around the corner from this place. If you sell food and people can dine in you must have bathroom for simple hygiene such as wash hands. That being said the person who served us is warm. The vanilla tea latte comes from one of those machines that you find at offices or car dealers where you press latte and dispenses latte. I m not up for those. read more

I was in Lowell for a meeting with the National Park Service. After a early morning flight from Philly and the drive down from Manchester NH I needed coffee. A quick check on my phone showed that the Coffee Mill Emporium was on the way. That was good enough for me. I stopped in a grabbed an extra-large cup of coffee, took a seat and popped out my laptop to catch up on email. The coffee was very good, the WiFi was quick and the staff was friendly. The coffee's okay and they have teas and other beverages. It gets four stars because of its location (right downtown) and its high top chairs and tables and its vinyl (spill on it and it wipes right up) couches and chairs. It's a nice place to sit and relax and have a good cup o' joe. The smoothies are too expensive ($4) and not very good. Plain and simple: I love the Coffee Mill. I've been going here religiously for three years now and I'm so glad to have come across it. It's located right in downtown so it's pretty easy to find. The Coffee Mill is my go-to stop for any TEA, maybe coffee. Yeah, I mostly stop by for the teas. The staff here knows me pretty well and knows what I like. We sometimes like to experiment with the different selections. Ah yes, there is so much to choose from and with the different mixes, you can even create your own drink really. You'll never get bored here at the Coffee Mill. I am not too familiar with the coffee actually...but I would suggest the GINGER PEACH or CRANBERRY BLOOD ORANGE teas. Hot or iced :) I also like English Breakfast with soy milk and sweetened to make milk tea yum! The staff here is so welcoming and love to help each individual patron. This place is trying to be a Starbucks copycat with their sizes. Would rather go to Brew'd Awakening and Coffee and Cotton than this place. This place has gone downhill. I'm going to have to start off by saying, just because an environment isn't over-crowded/infested with pillows/couches & artwork doesn't mean it has no 'coffeehaus' feel to it. Frankly, i hate the whole hip feel other spots have to offer... so The Mill is the place for me. The coffee here is delicious. They have brewed flavors, which is a huge plus for me because I don't like my coffee too sweet. They have a wide variety of pastries/breads/muffins and their cranberry bread is delicious. Not to mention their prices are unbeatable and I love that they have soy milk as an option for your coffee instead of milk or cream! This place has hands down the BEST SERVICE ever which is why I wanted to review this in the first place. The baristas go out of their way to make you feel at home. I walked in and was pleasantly greeted. They didn't have a credit card machine and offered my order on the house. I actually found cash in my bag so I paid for my latte as well as one for my boyfriend. Upon exiting one of the baristas walked to the door just to open it for us. WHAT PLACE DOES THAT!?? Though their drinks are average I would have to say this place is totally underrated. Totally recommend it. The only downfall is that I just wish they would extend their hours as they do close early. The coffee is very good; tastes fresh, including their iced coffee. Their prices are not bad at all. They also serve baked foods like pound cakes, muffins, and some snacks. Their blended coffee is also worth the try! The atmosphere is not bad, they have a reasonable amount of room. This coffee shop shouldn't deserve any stars at all. First off, the barista with dark hair was very rude. She shoved the change at me, and wasn't paying attention to her surroundings. This has happened to me more than once, but I still gave it a shot because maybe that person was having a bad day. Who knows. I don't appreciate being treated that way. It's very unprofessional. Not a customer anymore!! I have been going to this coffee place since 2001 when I was a student a middlesex community. As life goes on I have utilize it as a hotspot for meetings and training with new employee up until a couple of weeks ago. We stopped in early one afternoon, so I was looking for a decaffeinated latte. I was surprised to discover they don't offer decaffeinated espresso drinks--odd for coffee cafe. Best coffee shop in town!!! My kids are very fond of the shop as well. There aren't any frozen drinks similar around. The shop is convenient and accommodating especially when the owner goes out of her way to make a special chocolate frozen drink . I am always greeted even at the busiest of times. You not only have a college but also many businesses and a high school. At times the lines are out the door but the wait is short and the service is great. Prices are very reasonable. Yes, this is a coffee shop, BUT if you are a tea lover, this is your place! They have so much tea! There's probably at least thirty different teas that you can pick from. Do you like black tea or white, herbal or green? They have it and if you order a large tea, they ask the golden question: would you like one tea bag or two? Perfection! This is my favorite coffee stop in downtown Lowell. After the recent expansion it is a great place to hang out and drink coffee and read or chat. The coffee is good and the daily coffee special always keeps me in suspense. The prices are very reasonable - a medium hot coffee is $1.30.
