"I was sitting on the dock of the Bernardsville Bay" waiting for my client to arrive that day. When he finally arrived, being from the area, he suggested we have breakfast at the Coffee Shop. Yes, it is called the Coffee Shop. With such a large breakfast and lunch menu, it should be called something else like "Where Everybody knows Your Name". I could not believe all the high fives flying around. It's a relatively small shop with both booth and counter service. Clean with pictures covering one wall. I ordered the waffle with honey and assorted fruit ($10.00) and a cup of coffee ($2.75). Yes, it was sweet but that is why I ordered it. I have to say it was also delicious. I have visited the Coffee Shop once a week for the last month or so. They recently (?) expanded and renovated and the new dining area is great, although booths are a little tight (even for a small person). That being said, I think their pancakes are my favorite in the area. They are so fluffy and a generous sized portion. Also, they have real maple syrup on the menu to purchase (which is not an option everywhere). Poached eggs always come out perfectly cooked and the home fries are awesome too. Friends and family have had eggs prepared numerous ways, various types of omelettes, and even breakfast sandwiches. All food we have tried here has been fantastic. Today, I went to the coffee shop for the first time. I reviewed the specials . I asked the waitress if the taylor ham cheese and egg special could the egg be scrambled. The waitress pause and then said okay . I said I can order just a sandwich with taylor and cheese with the egg and a side of homefries. The waitress said no issue and I said okay great. While I was waiting for my food I was sitting across from the grill. The cook was preparing my food and the cook/ owner said for the "Taylor ham and egg special we cannot give a scrambled egg " She meaning the waitress since she told her - me that we can do we will but any other orders don't do it " I started to walk out and decided not to. Here is my concern 1) have a meeting with your staff and advise what can be done and cannot be done before you open . 2) for the specials list no substitutes on the menu . 3) When you are speaking to your staff don't say it in front of the customers. 4) Where is the customer satisfaction . 5) A scrambled egg vs sun side up egg not sure if the effort is really that hard. read more

I was looking forward to seeing the expansion done to a favorite breakfast spot. It was so disappointing that we will never go back. The new booths are for 2 or 4 persons. The ones for two are so small, you'd have to eat with your coat and purse on your lap. If you put 4 in the 4 person booth, same story. So when 5 of us asked for a table, we were greeted with a perplexed look- where could we be seated?? The table in the window would work, we pointed out. But it wasn't cleaned- followed by more blank stares. How about you have it cleared? Finally it was cleared and we sat down. The sun was so strong the butter on the table had melted and the half and half had spoiled. We had no choice but to deal with it. And now for the deal-breaker- we were served our food a full 50 minutes after we sat down!!! Looking around the restaurant, we saw everyone looking at their watches or phones and the empty tables in front of them. They expanded the seating area but did not expand the kitchen so they cannot prep the food fast enough. Most of the food was good- the French fries were excellent. My short stack of pancakes was a bit perplexing- the two pancakes were literally close to an inch thick each, making them heavy rather than light and fluffy. I could barely finish one of them. The food was decent and would be a good reason to go back but waiting longer for your food than it takes to eat it is a reason to eat elsewhere. There are other spots in town with food just as good and quick service. One final note- as we were eating, a party of 6 came in and were asked if they had a reservation ( in a diner?!?). When they said no, they were asked if they wanted to sit together! Of course they wanted to sit together! But where could they be seated!!??! A good dining experience is about more than just the food. This place needs some major reorganization. read more

We were long time customers under prior owners. Now the new owners have really changed-up this place and there isn't a thing wrong. I had the western omelette yesterday...it fed me again this morning at home and there's still a little left, my dog is looking wistfully at the remaining home fries. I almost missed this place. It looked like a small diner in Brooklyn, where I used to visit. Once walked in, there was a strong oily smell (minus 1 star). Hope they will upgrade their ventilation system soon. All items on the menu are pretty cheap. My husband and I ordered the Oscar omelet (sausage, ham, and bacon) with home fries, Sorrento omelet (tomato, red pepper, mozzarella cheese, and mushrooms) with fruit cup, short stack pancakes, a cup of coffee and a cup of tea. Everything tasted great! I actually liked the pancakes better than Brownstone's. Brownstone pancakes had too much baking soda in it for making the pancakes puffier. The total of our bill including tips was $33, which was a steal. Staffs were very friendly. Since it's in a smaller town, everyone knew each other, which was very nice to see. read more

This place absolutely tanked. Have lived in the area for my whole life, and never has a place dropped the ball so hard. So besides the fact that they DOUBLED their prices for a lot of items, the bad service, the food was bland and tasteless. 2 pieces of French toast and 2 eggs for $18? Absolutely disappointing. I went to the coffee shop for breakfast with my mother and my service dog. My service is the result of being injured in combat and helps to mitigate my PTSD and migraines as a result of being blown up in Iraq. I entered the coffee shop, and the hostess said, "We don't allow pets." I politely told her, " he is a service dog," as he wore his vest with Army patches. She went and got the owner. Without even recognizing that my service dog was perfectly legal to enter the diner, I showed him my ID for my service dog. He still wouldn't listen to me and asked us to leave. The owner claims he is an army vet on a Facebook post. I doubt that! I will never eat there again, as they discriminated against a vet who served three tours in Iraq. read more

I'm sorry to report that although the waitstaff was perfunctory at the coffee shop in Bernardsville, NJ, the rest of my breakfast was strangely incongruous and oddly prepared. I ordered tomato Juice, served in a tall plastic cup with a plastic straw on the side. Flavorless lemon graced the lip of the plastic cup. Eggs were ordered, scrambled with sausage. Links. And rye toast. From the top. The eggs were devoid of flavor. A pinch of salt may have added some life to them but no. This is the epitome of preppy/country club cooking. Flavorless. The sausage links were flaccid and cool at the inside. They could have been made of turkey or chicken, or even vegetable protein...it wouldn't have mattered what they served because the quality was just not there. Rye toast. I'll rue the day that I order rye toast at the Coffee Shop. The top piece and the next slice down were nicely toasted but missing any butter. The next two slices were as cold and wet as if they were resting in water on the counter. Void of heating. Breakfast is not inexpensive and it should be better.... but it won't. The interior renovation took away the soul of the Bernardsville Coffee Shop. It's as bland and emotionless as growing up preppy in Somerset County. Well, I sorta expected what I found at this small Bernardsville breakfast spot 5 minutes from TRUMP Golf Bernardsville location. Crispy bacon was microwaved and sucked. After my initial disappointing visit, I was contacted by the new owner to give this place another try, she had taken over the place in August. When I first walked in, I was surprised to see the diner so crowded and lively. One glance and it's obvious that they put in a lot of time to make this restaurant presentable again, the floors are clean, the booths have been replaced, and the service have done a complete 180. For breakfast, I ordered a cup of hot chocolate and one egg over-easy with homefries and bacon, the breakfast dish also comes with a cup of fruits. The hot chocolate was not overly sweet and topped with chocolate drizzled whipped cream, yum! The eggs were cooked to perfectly and tastes delicious when topped with an English muffin. However, the homefries were under seasoned and the bacon was too dry. In addition, a friend ordered scrambled eggs with cheddar, but it was served with a slice of American cheese. When we informed the owner about this, she quickly corrected the situation which we greatly appreciated. The food has definitely improved (but still not up to par yet), and the bathroom is much cleaner than it was before. This place deserves 5 star for service and 3 star for the food, so I settled for the middle. I'm excited to visit this place again in a few months and see what other changes is happening! read more

It is no small thing to get the basics right. It tells you a lot about a place. My order of pancakes with a medium egg on top was perfect. Best I've had in years. Three appropriately-sized cakes: not too thick and not hanging over the edges of the plate. Delicious. You might ask what is the big deal with getting pancakes right? A lot of places just get it wrong. Flat out wrong. Mushy, tasteless, whatever. Here it tasted like fresh ingredients. Egg was done perfectly too. Syrup was not real, but few places offer that anymore. I would suggest offering the real syrup for an upcharge or mentioning it if it Is on the menu. I overheard people gushing to the owner (presumably) about the Greek Salad. Others were also noticeably upbeat with their assessments. Crew was quick, neat, and very pleasant. Attentive but left me alone otherwise. I didn't have to share my life story with anyone to get a cup of coffee or anything, but I heard plenty of others exchanging pleasantries, laughs and life details with ease and comfort. The coffee BTW was spot on too. The owner appears to run a tight ship, minds the details with vigilance, and it shows. read more

This old-school diner is like a dive bar but for food, I love it. You know the famous Edward Hopper picture of the people in the diner? That's this place in 2012, only without the cool glass front. Three of us enjoyed a great lunch here. We sat in a booth and admired the stools at the counter. How many places still have a counter? There's table service and the help is pretty good about refilling your drink. I got a grilled cheese with tuna, it would be a tuna melt anywhere else. Six bucks for an enormous sandwich that was perfectly toasted. A side of fries was done golden brown and crispy. Bring cash, but you won't need a lot. We'll definitely be back. read more

Do you know how hard it is to get a decent breakfast burrito in this part of the world? I will tell you. It's hard. I am trying this place out for the first time and ordered a burrito. It's hot and melty inside. The tortilla has a little crisp on the outside. Everything is well seasoned. My only thought is that they used American cheese in the burrito. If I would have know that ahead of time, I would have asked for cheddar. That's my deal. The waitstaff was really sweet and attentive. Prices are fair.
