The Coffee Shop, Bernardsville NJ Diner menu
    Christian L.

Egg-cellent, or more appropriately - Excellent small local diner that serves delicious food only for breakfast and lunch. Lots of options. My breakfast was served fresh, hot, well plated and steaming. The waitresses are charming. Both booths and counter available. Lots of TVs on both sides for news, sports or TV show. The eggs were perfect. The side of potatoes were succulent and flavorful. Not burned. The English muffin and coffee so tasty that I can easily see why locals farm hands and electric workers trust their taste buds and come to this joint. Easy payment. No frills, easy going breakfast in a clean (squeaky clean) diner setting. Perfect and highly memorable breakfast in Bernardsville, NJ! Review: 5

I have visited the Coffee Shop once a week for the last month or so. They recently (?) expanded and renovated and the new dining area is great, although booths are a little tight (even for a small person). That being said, I think their pancakes are my favorite in the area. They are so fluffy and a generous sized portion. Also, they have real maple syrup on the menu to purchase (which is not an option everywhere). Poached eggs always come out perfectly cooked and the home fries are awesome too. Friends and family have had eggs prepared numerous ways, various types of omelettes, and even breakfast sandwiches. All food we have tried here has been fantastic. Service is quick and kind, too. 10/10 for the newly expanded Coffee Shop! Definitely swing by to dine in or take out -- pancakes and home fries are a must!

Decent breakfast. Typical NJ diner with reasonable prices. Good standard pancakes, waffles, and eggs. Friendly staff.

And no one smiling, nor upbeat and happy in greeting us. Good was goof to very good. Solid plus, no wow factor. My piece of salmon was not only large but perfectly cooked as requested. Short ribs and a veal Milanese was also ordered and was very good. Veal was tender, short ribs soft as soft could be. We chose to go out for ice cream even though they had some decent options. And given how busy it was, I wasn't even sure who our main server was. No one came over during the meal to ask how we were going. And at the end the server was different than who we started with and it took forever to flag someone down for the check. Food was a 4, but everything else we encountered brought the overall experience to a 3. I'm new to the area so if and when I'd be happy to go back and hopefully have another good meal with better service - more attention!

Unfortunately, I could not in good conscious recommend the restaurant to friends or family: 1) We had reservations for my husband's birthday. Despite this, we ended up waiting for a table 2) We ordered sparkling water and the waiter apologized but stated that the restaurant doesn't carry any. Not a big deal, but strange for a "nicer" restaurant. 3) We then ordered two glasses of champagne off the menu. We were then informed that despite this being listed on the menu, the restaurant does not offer any champagne by the glass. 4) We ordered popovers several hours before the restaurant closed. We saw other tables with this appetizer, but they informed us that unfortunately they ran out for the rest of the night. 5) Even after delayed seating for our reservation, it took 1 hour to receive our appetizers. We didn't say anything, but the waiter was nice enough o recognize this and offered us 1 of the appetizers for free. We were charged for this anyway, despite the waiter's promise. 6) I had notified the restaurant that this dinner was special and was for my husband's dinner. Not only was the service pretty bad throughout, there was never even a verbal happy birthday. I was hoping for so much more, and to be honest, the food was pretty good. However, the lack of food and drink available that was listed on the menu, and the delayed seating, and delayed food, and bad service was enough to turn us off after just 1 visit.

The bartender guided us on the drink options and offered suggestions, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the spicy margarita, which was delicious. We then were seated up stairs (the decor and ambiance of this place is beautiful!). They provide complimentary chips and salsa (my fav). The owner came by to apologize for the wait, which really wasn't terrible, and offered us two free tacos on the house. They were delicious! One chicken and one beef. We ordered the toca vez salad and plantain and coconut shrimp sushi (UNREAL!). Both were delicious but the plantain starter was heavenly. I ordered the scallop risotto. Delicious! My husband ordered the salmon and it was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cooked to perfection!! The waitress knew we were celebrating and provided up to complimentary champagnes and ice cream. One of the best dining experiences. Can't wait to come back to try more!

Shrimp tacos - tender seasoned shrimp served on fresh corn tortillas and a spicy sauce on the side were excellent. The steaks - one medium rare ribeye was surprisingly lean, but tender and flavorful and was beautifully cooked. The filet ordered medium came somewhere between rare and medium rare. But it was tender as expected (it is prime filet after all). Asparagus side was phenomenal. Shoestring fries came out crisp but oddly room temp. Sea bass dish was good, but the menu description failed to adequately describe the ingredients. The steaks were typical upscale steakhouse, but I guess I was hoping for a more Mexican-inspired flare when it came to the sauces or sides. Service was well-coordinated and available and friendly and efficient. The area that was lacking was the knowledge of the food. No one knew what was in the sauce that accompanied the shrimp tacos. It's okay not to know perhaps, but say I don't know and go find out. Also requested information about the dishes was lacking, particularly when it came to food allergies which one person in our party had.

The side potatoes were so delicious with onions and peppers. I finished all of mine. It was perfectly seasoned and not salty so eating this brunch was such a joy.
