What a nice restaurant! Came here for a birthday celebration. Nice place for a special occasion or just a nice dinner out. I had the Faroe Island salmon, it was cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed the flavor combinations. 2 members of our group thoroughly enjoyed the octopus. We indulged in the daily bread, which was a Japanese milk bread. All of us could have eaten 3 more, it was so good and fresh. Another table favorite was the truffle mash. Also rave reviews for the rib eye. We had the pear sundae for dessert....what a treat! They added a candle for the birthday celebrant and even included a card signed by the staff...such a thoughtful touch! Cocktails were also creative and not too sweet. read more

Great dinner for a hotel restaurant. The place was packed on a Friday night, with live music to boot which was a nice touch as we were here to celebrate a birthday. For food, we had the Caesar salad (great flavor and not overdressed) and the French onion soup (too sweet with not enough bread/cheese to onion ratio). For entrees, we had the burger (amazing and rich), steak au poivre (large portion), chicken (SUPER flavorful) and duck (HIGHLY RECOMMEND. This was a perfectly executed dish). The only sad part was when we ordered dessert, we were brought a card from the staff as a "congratulations". No singing, no candles, nothing. Rather disappointing with how expensive the dinner was. Initial reaction is that it's a nice place to stay. However, you have to watch very carefully as to the room you are given. Some rooms are very large and spacious, while others are like a shoebox. We wound up in a tiny room, dark and facing the roof mechanicals. in addition, the shower had virtually no water pressure. Management didn't really seem to care. You also might want to bring a pillow, as the bed pillows are terrible. I'm not sure what other accommodations are in the area, but it would pay to look around before settling here. read more

Went here for the first time for my anniversary. Very nice space but service was just ok at certain points. Overall good service but a free tines where our waiter was missing in action. Despite that it was a lovely meal. Drinks were excellent especially my old fashioned. The crispy Brussels sprout appetizer was excellent. The salmon tartar was tasty and the mussels were amazing. Caesar salad was supposed to be good don't know since I won't eat that ever. We got the flat iron steak which was good. The piece de resistance was the ribeye eye steak with truffle butter. So yummy. Desserts were good as we had bananas foster and warm chocolate cake. Coffees were fine. Overall it was a very good meal but for the price not spectacular. We attended this inn with a wedding party and it was great. It is not inexpensive but the staff went overboard to make sure everyone had exactly what they needed. It is a small inn that is perhaps not out of Gilmore Girls but an older inn that has a lot of heritage. The inn has a downstairs which in all skillet hood hosts a ton of weddings. For our 35 or so group that ate there it was perfect. It has a seating area, a bar, and a dance floor. If the group had been 100+ I don't k ow where they would have put us but it was perfect for us. Bernards Inn has great food and an excellent wine list. Robert, in particular, is a great waiter and we have enjoyed his service many times. Unfortunately, the manager, Mary Penny, took exception to my sense of humor and told us we were " not welcome" at the restaurant, for " inappropriate comments." The problem was that I didn't say anything to her! Those who heard these "inappropriate comments" thought they were funny, and that was my intent. I later called her to apologize and wanted to return. She said she would call back, and never did. I suppose the restaurant is doing so well, they don't need business. read more

It was my husband's and my anniversary last night(9/12,we pulled up front to the resteraunt. Once we exited our car we looked at each other and thought" where is everyone?,why is it closed? My husband made reservation....we go inside,we were greeted by a very nice man. We were escorted to "The basement".....where the most WONDERFULLY CREATIVE COCKTAILS awaited. I wish I could remember either of these talented charming bartender's names. They were both conversational and highly skilled at their craft. Our dinner was sumptuous ! This restaurant is inside a historical hotel, with great ambiance and service that keeps loyal customers keep coming back to stay there and/or dine there. I have been there few times myself, all for business dinner, and I always had a pleasant time and good food. The restaurant is not a huge space but I think it is enough for the area. The main dining room has black and white tiles, creating that old-fashion feel to it, with simple furniture. They don't have crazy amount of tables on top of each other, so there are good amount of space in between each table. It is nice to dine in such relaxing and comfortable setting. But, since there is limited number of tables, reservation is highly recommended. The bartender of the evening, Neia was wonderful, she made awesome cocktails for me, and made sure to wait for me to get my camera ready before she made the cocktails. So sweet! Their food is also great, I usually have some kind of seafood, but my boss insisted on getting their chicken, which turned out to be a winner. Everything is made with great care, all very delicious. We were well taken care of by the servers, they were efficient and polite, do not bother you unless you need something, as this is more of a relaxing atmosphere. At the end, they brought out trays of complimentary sweets. On what else? Silver tier trays. It had chocolate, truffles, and red velvet cakes. They are a miniature size, as you can see them compared to eager fingers reaching out for them. They are very good too, if you are not wanting to have a whole dessert, but just a taste of sweet something, then you can just wait for these to come out instead of ordering a dessert. read more

Lunch menu is interesting. We had Salmon and pasta Cavatine with red heirloom tomato sauce for the mains and kale salad and chilled tomato soup for the appetizers. We also ordered a bottle of wine where the main confusion started. They didn't have four of the full bottles in the vintage years as mentioned in the wine menu list. The server Ms.Kathy was very polite and friendly she apologized for the miscommunication and charged us $69 for the 2017 of the same wine in place of $96. read more

Change of chef is always tough but style change can't be so extreme. Chef, the presentation is a 5 out of 10 all around and portion sizes need to increase by 20%. The elegant service is gone, bar too brightly lit, help not dressed up, etc. Anyone that ever new this place would be shocked by the very small menu and wine list. The food was very good although the menu did not explain dishes properly. The piano player, who has been there for many years, was still fabulous and the only saving grace. We had drinks / dinner in the bar this evening. Service was good, and attentive but not distracting. Bar got really loud for about 30 minutes when some rabble rousers appeared, calmed down after that. I had the warm mushroom salad, it tasted good, but too few mushrooms, too many greens. I also had the pork belly app as a main, it was good. My wife had a salad that she couldn't finish and also had the salmon app, which was outstanding. Our guests were happy with their meal as well, beet salad was great, fish nicely presented and cooked properly and flat iron steak was a hit. Overall, a very good experience. read more

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely Friday evening here with live guitar music to complement the evening. The beet burrata salad is amazing as well as the swordfish special. Had an excellent brunch here. I had an omelette and my wife had French toast with banana - both very satisfied. The home fries served with the omelette were perfect - crispy and delicious. I was unsure how to give an accurate rating, so I should start by saying the food and ambiance deserve a solid 5 stars. The service on the other hand: 2 stars. Though our waitress was friendly, she was certainly not attentive or professional. I had ordered a bubbly flight and when it was brought over to me, she basically threw down the three glasses never specifying which was which. Not only that, our appetizers were brought out before we even received our drinks. We quickly received our entrees (too quickly, the entire meal took less than 45 minutes and we got two appetizers as well) and were not able to find our waitress until she happened to be passing by and we asked her for the check. When you go to an expensive '5 star' restaurant, you expect the service to be top notch, and this certainly was not the case here. Will not be returning, which is a shame because the food was extremely delicious and beautiful. read more

After choosing bottled over tap water, we were given a resealable bottle (like from Pier Imports) filled with water. Can't say we expected this. We thought we would get Evian, Perrier, or similar. 2. We had a business dinner event here for around 30 people a couple of days ago, and the venue was impeccable. Food was flawless, drinks were perfect, waiters were professional and attentive, and the room was beautiful. Afterwards we headed to the bar and it was a lot of fun with great bartenders. The food we were served- salad, lobster bisque, halibut, chicken, and a dessert dish with 3 bite size pieces of chocolate cake, pecan pie, and apple pie. It was a wonderful dinner. The Inn is about an hour and a half drive from NYC. The ambiance is great for business/client meetings, and the service couldn't have been better. Can't wait to return! read more

We have enjoyed dining here over many years. However, our recent experience indicates that it is no longer what is was. The carpet at the entry was very dirty looking, replete with stains. We sat in the room at the rear of the piano which is now manned by a guitarist. This is an historic inn but this dining area needs attention as it is unattractively old and dowdy. The menu is now quite limited and without many of the previously well appreciated dishes. The lovely bread basket no longer exists nor is bread included. There is an artisanal bread of the evening @ $4 ("white bread tonight") . The cheese and charcuterie platter had 4 wedges of ice cold cheese; the accompanying crackers crumbled upon impact. While I could go on, to cut to the chase, we will not return. read more

After spending a nice evening at the bernards inn, we decided to try breakfast. What a great choice. We both chose the organic 3 egg omelets with Vermont cheddar. Mine had forest mushrooms, scallions, ham, bell peppers and asparagus. My bf had the same with cheddar, mushrooms, scallions, bacon, ham, and red peppers. The omelets were served with 2 pieces of Multigrain bread and the most amazing hash browns. Now, these weren't really hash browns, but the most crispy breakfast potatoes that we ever had...first steamed and then fried and tossed with chives and thyme. Yum. The best part of breakfast. We can't wait to return just to eat...breakfast. It's true and at $10 per breakfast, it can't be beaten. read more

The last time I visited the Bernards Inn was 5 years ago, February 2016. I left an honest 1 star review of my shameful experience then, and can now write another without even having to return. I called the Bernards Inn this afternoon, to inquire about an old gift certificate from my in-laws. They had since moved out of state, and upon clearing out some things found a $100.00 hand written gift certificate. It has no expiry date, and is clearly unused, although was originally dated back to 2004. Even though its quite old, our in-laws gave it to us to celebrate a late engagement, figuring why let a certificate that doesn't expire, go to waste. Since we couldn't go during COVID, I considered it a chance to give the Bernards Inn another shot...to see if my experience might be changed from 2016. To my surprise, the hostess returned to the phone only to explain to me that the Bernards Inn is now only accepting gift certificates back as far as 2006. This was actually a worse answer than simply saying, we won't accept it any longer. When I asked why they wouldn't take it, given the difference between 2006/2004 seemed negligible at that point; while also expressing the clear lack of expiry date, the hostess had to put me hold for clarification. She returned to explain that "new management" took over in 2006, so they aren't taking old managements certificates any longer. That's all the explanation I needed, to remember why I took the time to write an awful review about new management 5 years ago, and all the explanation I need to truly never bother going back. read more

Of special note was the Arctic char which was cooked perfectly (crispy skin and tender flakey filet) accompanied with a sweet and juicy roasted tomato. My only compliant is that coffee wasn't served along with dessert, it came a solid five minutes after we had finished desert. This felt disjointed especially when those who ordered tea and decaf coffee received their drinks with dessert (discrimination against caffeine drinkers??). read more

Our family engaged the Bernardsville Inn for a weekend wedding at an estate in Bernardsville we had a family and friends to occupy all the rooms in the end. We had the rehearsal dinner in the taproom in the basement on Friday night and attended the wedding on Saturday with everyone in the bridal party staying over until Sunday. The team at the end headed by Gen. manager Mary Pavlini provided service that met or exceeded the service I have received in any hotel in America. At a moments notice bags and packages were taken in and out of the Inn as needed and the byword of the Inn seem to be "is there anything more we can do for you". Apart from the service all the food we ate at the rehearsal dinner, and for those who came up on Friday night, was just excellent. I cannot cannot give a higher recommendation to any establishment. read more

The chafing dishes had lids and you were unable to hold your plate and the lid and the serving spoon. Everything was messy and picked over by the 4 pm seating. The Bernard's inn has been and continues to be one of my top favorite restaurants in New Jersey! Never a disappointing experience with top quality food and cocktails! This particular dinner from start to finish was absolutely amazing. Our appetizers were the Flatbread, tuna tartar, and cold vichyssoise soup which each one was better than the last! Entrée, my boyfriend and I both for the halibut and it was perfectly paired with veggies and sauces making it one hell of a dish. And to finish off was the rice pudding dessert....out....of...this...world! I am not a dessert person, but I could easily eat 5 of these and still feel like I haven't eaten enough deliciousness! Paired with a nice Prosecco and a cocktail for my boyfriend which was personally created to his preference, was nicely done as well!
