This is my initial review I hired Jac Knust to represent me in a divorce and a domestic violence case. He advertised that his office is in Columbia, but I think that is only to have it look good. All of my meetings were in a dilapidated room attached to his old house. There was a cat there at least three times trying to jump on my lap and interrupting us. When I mailed a check to his Columbia office, they didn't even know that it was there. They said they don't get mail at that address. In court, when I was on the stand and being cross examined, the lawyer confused me and I gave an incorrect answer. Jac just sat there. Afterwards, I asked him why he did not object. He said something like "I heard you say something, but you mumbled". Wrong. It was through the court microphone. The judge heard me, the other lawyer heard me. Also, Jac tell the judge that he is hard of hearing an asks everyone to speak up. In my opinion my lawyer's hard of hearing caused an issue in my case. When I finally decided to drop him and get a better lawyer, he stopped returning my emails. He owed me close to $10,000 and, so far, two business days, has not returned my calls or emails. Another example: I'm going through a divorce. I made a spreadsheet with all household items and their estimated values. I told jac about it and he said it would be useful. When I showed it to my new, current lawyer, she said "No, that's not good at all. You will need a professional property appraiser to document all of the household items." She new the law. She was very quick with the correct answer. Jac....he just seemed to not know. For some reason, this review was removed from Yelp...reposting The business owner replied that there were many inaccuracies. I call on that business owner to name the inaccuracies. read more

My now ex-wife and I made the right decision when we chose the Collaborative Law Group as our Mediator. We couldn't be more pleased with the job Jac Knust and his staff did. We only needed one mediation session because Mr. Knust and his assistant were very knowledgeable on the mediation process and guided my ex-wife and I through it. I am not saying that all couples can complete the mediation process in one session but Mr. Knust and his staff will work diligently to assist couples in coming to a resolution as quickly as possible. After my wife and I both came to a consensus on the mediation agreement, Mr. Knust sent us instructions via email on what we needed to do in order to file for divorce. The instructions were very clear and included access to forms we both needed to complete and submit to Circuit Court. The turn around time after the mediation process was completed and the granting of the divorce via zoom court was about a month. I was surprised to read the single Yelp review for the Collaborative Law Group which is directly at odds with my experience and observations. Although I have not spoken with Jack Knust in some time, I had several occasions to professionally interact with him and his Collaborative Law Group over the course of more than 20 years. My experience has been that Jac cares deeply about his clients and invests not only professionally in each case, but he is emotionally committed to finding the best outcome. Sometimes, however, the best outcome is not the "perfect" outcome imperfect and less than objective clients seek. Domestic clients sometime delude themselves into thinking that they are the pure victims and that everyone else involved in their case (including their own lawyers) are victimizers, and are thus the purveyors of abuse and misery. That is rarely true . Most of the time, couples embroiled in a domestic case have less than noble behavior on each side. The level of hurt and distress tends to darken their objectivity. So, when I read a review or comment about a lawyer's performance in a domestic case, I take the criticism with a grain of salt. That is especially true in Jac's case. Given my experiences and the many positive client testimonials which appear on the other rating platforms, I would not hesitate to entrust him with my family's legal work. read more

Beware this law firm. I had an initial consultation with Jac Knust, and agreed to pay the initial $3500 retainer. Subsequently, my case was entirely handled by the incompetent junior partner Emily Hobbins. I never had a clear understanding of my legal problem, options, and solutions. Many times, I was the one directing the case and asking the relevant questions, despite paying them for services. What's worse, I was never informed when the fees accrued beyond the initial retainer so that by the time I first heard about a bill, I already owed another several thousand dollars and was too far into the process to fire these attorneys and opt for a different legal team. In addition to the lack of billing transparency and incompetence, they neglected to inform me of a time-sensitive window during which I had to take additional steps regarding this complex legal case. I only found out about this after I emailed them to ask for an update! I ended up having to cancel important travel plans so that I could hurriedly take care of this issue at the last minute! I complained about them through the Better Business Bureau and they never even responded to the complaint, but only charged me an additional $375 for the time that it took them to review my complaint! DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE, interview several attorneys, and go with the one who appears intelligent & honest. And stay away from the Collaborative Law Group! read more
