This goes back to the management of this facility who's only goal is to provide prison quality care. The things I saw and experienced while my mom was here are frightening. I saw unattended elderly patients left on the floor as they slid out of their wheelchairs. They have what appears to be VERY FEW staff members overnight, leaving patients that require round the clock care neglected. They allowed my quadriplegic mother to fall out of her bed twice, sending her to the hospital for brain scans. It was often unclear who was "in charge". The support from the social worker was nearly nonexistent. My wife filed a complaint with the state. I would urge anyone considering this facility to find another. The last straw was when we called to ask about my mother's status and one of the nurses responded "I don't have time for this shit!". We are at Westminster on MoPac now, which seems a million times more professional. I don't know where all the money the families and insurance companies pay is going to, but very little is flowing back to the facility. Most is likely going to the high net worth investors that make up the ownership of Juniper Village as part of its real estate "portfolio". After an extensive search, I identified Juniper at Spicewood Summit as the ideal home away from home for her. I was surprised at how protective I became of her and that I did not want to trust just anyone with that care. Fortunately for me, Juniper at Spicewood Summit has lived up to my expectations and more. As a result, my mother has experienced a new chapter in her life, and it is stimulating and fun! She enjoys the nutritional meals and gracious dining and never misses a washing a dish or cleaning the table. Her days are filled with a variety of activities by the creative Connections Director. Plenty of cabinet space and drawers. The kitchen also has a large double stainless steel sink and faucet. The wall across from the kitchen has a large closet for storage and also a full size GE washing machine and dryer. The living room has plenty of room for a large recliner, a grandfather clock, a 65 inch Samsung TV and a large double door cabinet where I have my 27 inch iMac computer. Between the recliner and outside wall I also have a 36"x36" pedestal table, where I have a large hammered copper lamp with shade. The two walls forming the corner behind the recliner and grandfather clock, have two large glass windows covered by Venetian blinds. Moving through the lockable door into the bedroom there is room enough for a queen sized bed, and a three drawer cabinet with lamp. The outside wall has a large window covered with Venetian blinds. Sliding double doors lead into a closet with plenty of room for hanging shirts, and with shelves that hold baskets for socks, and underwear. Under the shelf on the right there is room for a large four drawer cabinet where I can store pajamas and a large collection of various shoes. A single sliding door leads into a spacious bathroom, complete with a shower, toilet, and lavatory. There are two spacious cabinets and drawers next to the shower. Another reason I picked this third floor apartment is that it is located next to the fire escape stairs. I never use the elevators because I like the exercise I get walking up and down the stairs. Infected employees were not immediately removed from duty, isolated, or replaced. There was no proper quarantine, masking enforcement, contact tracing, or notification to residents or their families. This exposed vulnerable senior residents, many with underlying medical conditions, to serious risk of illness. The staff were not given proper PPE or guidance on usage of PPE The Executive Director is an arrogant rude unprofessional disrespectful clown and a disgusting jerk who treats his staff especially in Assisted living as dirt. The food is unhygienic, bland and not worth for human consumption and the kitchen is infested with roaches and bugs. Unfortunately the dietary needs of residents are not taken in consideration. The hallways smell of urine and stale mold The elevator has been broken and non functional multiple times in Assisted living. Not to mention flooding of rooms is common during any rains.. The last two years of my grandparent's life were wonderful because of Brookdale. When my grandparent arrived, we were given a bigger room since the one offered was no longer available. They gifted a beautiful bird feeder that my grandparent adored. From a psychosocial perspective, they had endless parties, activities, outings to places like HEB to involve the residents. It appeared that the residents were happy. My grandparent did not like to partake in those activities but there was always someone encouraging my grandparent to participate, which my grandparent ended up enjoying. My grandparent was religious and was driven to church every week by Brookdale. From a healthcare prospective, the care was exceptional. Mary, the director of nursing was communicative and transparent and I felt I could trust her. There were a few issues that happened and Brookdale investigated the issues and reported back to me the solutions. The Nurse Practitioners, such as Joyce and Marsha from AGS who take care of the residents are also exceptional. In addition, Brookdale offers car services to doctors appointments. In summary, through the outstanding leadership at Brookdale NW Hills, they provide exceptional psychosocial care and healthcare. I would highly recommend this facility with it's current leadership. I hesitated to write a review earlier, because I did not know if it would affect their care. Sadly they have now both passed. If I could have offered this feedback directly and felt that it would be heard, I would have done that. But my strong impression dealing with the management here is that they are not interested in feedback and do not view it as a way of learning or improving as a business, but rather as a waste of time and a source of resentment. So I just want to make sure others have an informed understanding of what they are getting themselves into here. The kind of review that I wish I had had myself when I first uprooted my parents, both of them with advanced Parkinson's Disease, and moved them across the country from Pennsylvania to live here. Highlights: - The facility is very beautiful. That was what I was sold on originally. - The sales team is kind and good at their job. I feel that they did their best to lean in and smooth the way for my parents and for me, even though when it came to actual management of the residence, that went beyond their scope. - There are many individual nurses and caregivers who are very caring and good at their jobs. - Overall I believe that the facility is mismanaged. The leadership of the center is inaccessible. They do not come to work. They do not pick up their phones. They do not respond to emails. There are no company email lists that allow you to get greater visibility for your communication so that someone higher up will hold the facility accountable to respond--your email goes into an individual email inbox where it is largely ignored. - The nurses and caregivers are not actively managed. No one helps them organize themselves or facilitates communication. No one is present to see first hand when they are over-stretched and cannot handle all of the individual needs on their floor. This results in some pretty serious mismanagement of medication. One time I discovered purely by accident, because I happened to visit, that my father had not received his Parkinson's medication for 3 days, because they had not re-ordered it from the pharmacy or had some type of snag. And they did not call me or make sure that it was resolved. They just let the medication lapse. - Once I saw that was happening, I went far, far, far out of my way to create written medication schedules to try to ensure medication was administered correctly. Multiple times my father himself caught incorrect medication, even though he was barely in a cognitive state to be able to do that and it was very unfair for him to have to be concerned with it. Again, I do not attribute this to the nurses. They are good, well meaning people who want to do their jobs. I attribute it to management that does not put in place systems for them or help organize things or ensure good communication. They just are sort of left there to function as best as they can without leadership. - Most of the nurses / caregivers they hire are good, but some are NOT good. Early on, there was a nurse on the team who got into a very adversarial relationship with my mother, trying to force her to go to bed or to get up or something that she did not want to do. When I came to visit after a week trip I found her in a paranoid, delusional state, convinced that someone was trying to hurt her. Of course she was very sick and it was basically a delusion. But when I interacted with that nurse myself, I understood why she felt that way. He was aggressive and controlling. They did promise to fire that nurse. But then on a future occasion I came back and found him there. I had to complain again. - Memory care is a bit better. But primarily it is better because once someone is on hospice, they have access to a separate hospice provider who comes INTO the facility to provide care. And that hospice provider is excellent, top to bottom. I cannot possibly say enough good things about them. But they are not employed or managed by the center. They just come in on a daily basis to provide care. - In the last month of my father's life, he developed very severe delusions arising out of Parkinson's related dementia, and became aggressive. It was very sad and very hard to watch. My father was a mild-mannered mathematician all his life. It simply was not him or his character to behave in the way he did. - I was so upset by the way the facility handled this. They called the police on him. I had to drop everything and rush over to keep them from escalating past a point of no return. When I went up to the apartment, Brenda, the leader in charge of AL, was smirking and laughing at him and his delusions. It turned my stomach. It still keeps me up at night. If you have your parents or loved ones here, please be prepared to work directly with the staff yourself to ensure communication & good care. It requires constant vigilance.
