Ughhhh - I have been sitting on this review for almost 2 weeks. I don't really love coming down on small local businesses - someone's livelihood - but seriously. This was one of my worst haircuts. I will not be calling the specific stylist out in this review, but if you are new to this salon - I'd recommend possibly scheduling a visit first and maybe speaking with the owner before just scheduling an appt with a new stylist. I had a bit of a sour taste in my mouth the day I called to schedule my initial appt. I should have listened to my gut but then I thought I was being too sensitive so rode it out. A little background - my sister had previously posted on Southington talks asking about best salons in the area. Many fine folks recommended The Color Bar. They even gave names of stylists they enjoyed (my fault for not specifically selecting one of the actual recommendations - Megan and Janelle were mentioned). So anyway - I called on a Sat late morning. Told whomever answered the phone that I was somewhat new to the area and was looking for a new hairstylist. The very first thing she says is 'you're not expecting to come in today???' Of course I'm not, I explain - was just looking to schedule an appt. I then explained that my hair is very long, coarse and wavy and can be difficult to cut. She literally sounded annoyed that I was explaining this to her. She gives me an appt for later that week. I do love that they have a couple later weeknight evenings, which works great for my schedule. Now - silly me - I TRUST that after stating my hair can be difficult to cut - she'd take that into consideration. But that clearly did not happen. I get to the salon - which apparently was recently renovated but honestly - it's more industrious (drop ceilings and fluorescent 'office style' lights). You checkout in the back corner of the salon. I walk into this place I've never been to and am just standing at the front door. It wasn't that long before someone looked up from their chair and asked who I was there to see. But it was awkward. The stylist was super sweet. On the younger side. Engaging but not too much. My hair was down to my waist. I told her I wanted 3 inches taken off. I need to keep it long for the weight and I wear it up often. I started to panic a tiny bit when she spun the chair and I saw how much she cut off (6 inches). Thank God my hair was so long - it's still just above the bottom of my shoulder blades but OMG - it was cut SO unevenly. My mom came over the next day and had to actually use kitchen shears to try to cut off some of the longer pieces to straighten it out. It was pretty horrible. Ironically - my sister saw Britney the next night and she LOVED her hair. Had an amazing experience. Britney even told my sister she'd fix my hair at no cost, which was incredibly sweet of her. I seriously don't want ANYMORE taken off so I'm just gonna ride it out for a few months and then get it trimmed somewhere else. I'm not sure who answered the phone but shame on her - first for her attitude and stand-offish first introduction to the salon but more-so for scheduling me with the stylist she did. Who clearly does NOT know how to handle long, wavy, course, super thick hair. Will not be back. read more

My point here is not to prove the people who work here wrong, but just to warn other people to be careful and be aware of the poor service they provided me so they don't waste their money and time like I did. Luckily there's another person on yelp ( Under MacKenzi p) who had a similar situation like mine, and I am glad she posted a picture of her hair done by them as proof and I regret not checking them out on yelp before choosing them. Janelle's response to my review is 80% false. Here: 1) Client had called multiple times asking for an EXACT dollar amount and came down in person to get an exact quote. She has a lot of hair and was told we need to see how much product we use I never called them. A friend of Megan referred me to see her for the hair. I went to salon and met Megan in person that is when he gave me her contact # to stay in touch with her. 2) Client came in with level 2/3 natural hair expecting icy platinum blonde. By looking at expectation pictures there clearly was a misunderstanding of what the clients expectations were I find this very hilarious because I never asked for icy platinum blonde. In fact, I never asked for any color. I just simply showed them a picture of the ashy blonde balayage I had done in California 5 months ago. Since hair roots grow out, every 5-6 months I have to bring the color up. And this is all I wanted. It brings me so much disbelief about how she came up with this lie when I asked for something completely different. 3) She then waited two weeks to complain it wasn't the shade she wanted and needed it ashier and redone. (Which is over our policy notice.) First of all, why would I wait after 2 weeks to make a decision on whether I liked my hair or not? When she did my hair on January 9th I believe, I told her I would be traveling to Canada after 3 days. I had to go to a wedding ceremony. My schedule was very busy. In total it took me about 10 days to contact her because I had to travel back and forth (and consider the heavy snow during that time!). My hair started becoming brassy in color right after 1 wash. Who would be happy about this? (Which I never experienced since I started going blonde) 4) Amongst other degrading texts. She also was sending Venmo requests multiple times with different amounts of money she wanted refunded. This is a very interesting lie! Please share the screenshot of these "multiple" Venmo requests because I sure as hell only sent ONE. 5) Client rudely hung up on my face & when I called back to come up with closure the client started threatening to come down to the salon a second time and cause a scene I did hang up on her because I did not want to speak with Janelle in the first place. She was being an obnoxious that I could not stand her. I wanted to speak to Megan since she was the one who messed up my hair and she was avoiding me. She got Janelle involved unnecessarily and at that point I was frustrated with the way Megan was treating me. Like I said in my original review, Megan directly reassured me that she would be able to do what I wanted in ONE session ( she never mentioned I needed more than 1 session WHICH I DON't) so of course my expectations were high. Janelle stated otherwise in her response, that my hair would have to be done in multiple sessions. What they said does not match so where is the truth in this? Google and on Instagram, because there is proof that correcting a balayage CAN BE ACHIEVED in 1 long session ( not JUST 2 HOURS) (Attaching photos) As you all can see in my pictures, there is patchiness, brass and solid lines. The salon I used to go in California takes 5-6 hours to correct my hair and I'm always happy with the results. I look back and realize that Megan had no patience in doing my hair because it only took her 2 hours. I did not have unrealistic expectations. She simply just does not know how to do hair! Best of luck and more practice to them because they need it. read more

She recommends the best way to keep my hair healthy and I trust her with my life when it comes to my hair. For my first haircut in 1.5 years I went to a salon where my friend got an amazing haircut. I'm so glad I did. This place is terrific. Everything you want in a salon. Friendly stylists, gorgeous decor, and a relaxing experience. I have fine hair that has to be razor cut to curl and look full. Britney did a fantastic job. I walked out feeling ten times prettier than when I walked in. The salon is clean and big so it's easy to socially distance inside. They salon makes a point of scheduling so that there's plenty of space between customers. I had to cancel my appointment because of a pet emergency. My puppy needed an ultrasound and the vet hospital was booked up so we had to go to emergency room and hope to be seen. We got in by late morning and I called to see if the salon still had my original appointment open. They didn't but Britney fit me in that day right before the holiday weekend. I have been going to Janelle and the color bar since 2015 and I will not go anywhere else!!! I went from jet black box dye to a blonde without any damage!! Janelle does a great job of not rushing the process and recommending products to protect your hair. Even after giving birth and losing hair she helped me find products to help prevent breakage and to strengthen my hair. I get compliments all the time on my hair!! I also am obsessed with how beautiful the salon looks as well they have glitter on their ceiling lol!! The vibe in the color bar is just so nice! This salon is beautiful and bright inside. They offer a wide variety of services from nails, to hair and now spray tans, making it truly a one stop shop. I got a customizable spray tan from Liv and it came out so natural! I loved it. Having never had a spray tan before I was a bit hesitant but I'm so glad I trusted her. It was the perfect fix for a dose of sun-kissed skin in the middle of Fall! I will definitely be going back for more since they gradually fade so nicely. Today was my first time at The Color Bar, and I am planning on continuing to be a returning client. I'm always a little nervous when switching salons, but Megan made me feel instantly relaxed and comfortable when I sat in her chair. She is naturally very friendly and talkative, and our conversations helped pass the 2 hours really nicely. The salon is gorgeous inside and super clean, and the chairs are a ways away from each other, so you get a sense of privacy when getting your hair done. I'm very picky with my hair and especially with the tone of my blonde. I can't stand any brassiness. I told Megan exactly what I wanted and she went to work right away. She was super gentle on my hair, took her time and my hair didn't feel like it was being damaged whatsoever. (Sometimes when adding blonde at other places you can really tell how much it's breaking your hair depending on how they do it) I booked my appointment online ahead of time, and at the time, booked a full color and a well water treatment. Megan actually told me I don't have to do the well water treatment at the salon and I can just buy and use the recommended shampoo. She easily could have upsold me on that for the money, but she chose not to and gave an honest recommendation. That right there won me over for good. My bayalage came out beautiful and I booked my next appointment with her with no hesitation in mind. Excellent experience. read more
