2018's Color Run at Raley Field felt a bit lacking. The freebies at the end and full bottle freebies were definitely missing. The route was a bit boring but only because I already work downtown. Best part was probably crossing Tower Bridge. It was nice to see a bunch of streets closed off just for our route! I was expecting a metal unicorn but got some plasticly medal instead. I wish they would add another 1-2 more color stations. There were only 4 I believe. Other than that I did enjoy my time with my sisters and nephews. Seeing my baby nephews all colored was amazing. I recommend people who actually want to run it, to be the first group to go! Family friendly! It's a bit too messy for commuting back unless your car is wipeable. Weather was nice though! I'm not sure if I'll do this run again but it is definitely a fun one time thing to do with kids and family.

Four of us participated, two of which were 9 & 12. Free parking so close to the event was very nice. The line for check in was split into four and there wasn't a long wait (maybe 15 minutes). Once checked in we got our number and we're sent to the next tent to get our gear (the shirt, safety pins for the numbers, headbands, HAPPY tattoos, and coupons) in a giant ziplock bag which was great for clean up later. There is also a sales tent where you can get even more gear like other shirt patterns, sweatshirts, tutus, headbands, socks, key chain unicorns, stuffed unicorns, bumper stickers, water bottles, unicorn tattoos, hats, bracelets, and probably more stuff I just didn't see. There is a line for that but it moves quickly too and they take cash OR cards. Some people come with unicorn horns, unicorn hats, wigs, and other festive gear but that is not sold on site so if you really want to go for gusto you'll have to shop around. They also have a stage with super loud music and dancing, they were doing Zumba this morning. As you go to the start line it can be crowded but it's not terrible and they throw free items to the crowd as you wait for your turn ton"run". (Let's be honest about 2/3 of the people here walk.). They ask that walkers stay to the right and runners to the left to avoid collisions and hang ups. The distance was absolutely doable even for the kids. The spaced out color stations kept their interest and the boxes of color they left out for self-application were a HUGE hit. My kids just tossed it at each other but I saw some people just dumping it over their heads for total coverage. It was super cute that the people tossing out color were all ages- some of them were maybe seven years old. For starters at the very beginning there's a foam generator area to run through. From that point on it is just color stations (pink, yellow, green, purple) and one water station at the middle and one at the end. At the finish line you get a unicorn medal (with a unicorn, the year, and the event name on it) and one color packet (we got orange and green). I would have liked one more color station as the last mile or so felt a little drawn out and one more water station would have been helpful (we brought our own but I saw some younger kids who didn't that were complaining about it). The unicorn runners were great! Super cute idea and they were so nice they were willing to pose for photos with everyone who asked. We arrived at about 7:15am for the 8am-8:30am race and it was plenty of time to check in, sunscreen up, use the bathrooms (portable toilets with a hand sanitizer station) and get additional goodies at the sales tent. We were in line to "run" at 8:15am. We walked at a very kid friendly pace and finished at 9:30am so the actual walk time for us was a little over an hour and there were still plenty of people ahead of us and behind us. For those who are anti-color (we had one) you can pass the color stations on the outside of the balloon arch and stay pristine easily so even clean freaks can join in the fun without dealing with the aftermath. What made it easy for us- we brought a backpack with water bottles for each of us, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, a stow away place for the cell phones (I wore a fanny pack so I could pull it out for photos and hide it when near powder) and towels/blankets for the car after. (I would also bring wet wipes as it cleans off color very well on your hands and face.). For kids sunglasses are ESSENTIAL because sometimes you get hit in the face and I saw one poor woman trying to flush powder out of her eye. Also we learned that if you wear TWO shirts, a white on top for color fun and a dark beneath it the color will not seep through to your skin and stain you--- the kids (who double shirtted) were clean after-- we (single white shirts) were NOT (for the adults it took 15 minutes of scrubbing with wet wipes to get it off our backs/chests under our shirts). Yes it is pricey and yes it's early for Saturday morning but it's oh so much fun. We were all glad we went. We will absolutely be doing this again!

RAINBOW BRIGHT: Colors flying and spraying everywhere! Costumes and wild outfits galore! This is certainly a run like no other. I'm usually competitive when it comes to runs, but this untimed event was a nice change where I could get my run on purely for fun. HOW IT WORKS: You get sprayed with a cloud of yellow, orange, pink, or blue dust every kilometer (a different color each time). There was a big turnout for the 2012 run! At the start of the race, I was caught up in a huge bottleneck, and felt a bit claustrophobic, but after a while the crowd thinned out and I could get my stride on. It was a fun run, and by the end, I was a colorful mess! MY RECOMMENDATIONS: #1: Arrive early - this is a huge race and is located downtown, so parking can be a nightmare. #2: Go out to have fun - this is not a timed run. #3: Wear WHITE - this is a must, otherwise the colors won't show. I suggest an old white T-shirt you don't care about. Mine was trashed after the race. #4: Wear a hat to protect your hair and your face. #5: Wear sunglasses you don't care about to protect your eyes. #6: Wear a bandana around your neck and pull it up when you go through the color areas to avoid aspirating the stuff! #7: Bring baby wipes and a towel for after the race so you don't color the seats of your car! Overall, I had a great time with my running team and I'll make sure to come out next year. My only complaint is that sometimes the color was sprayed on my face. I wish the color misters would make an effort to avoid that area. It's no fun running while inhaling pink!

They announced 10,000 runners! i don't know about that but this year 2015 seems like its less people. it was a last minute event for me, after i found out my good friend was going, i went and tagged along. We both had a great time and pushed each other and help motivate each other when we had our struggle moments during the running course. VOLUNTEERS They had about 5 different color stations. They had a yellow, pink, blue, orange, and glitter station. Each station had a color and they threw color powder all over you. If you complain how you don't get none on you, then feel free to roll around the floor and it will stick all over you haha. i try not to breathe in when i run through the color stations because it will go all up your mouth and nose. When you spit, it will be that color. Also when you blow your nose the day after the run or the next day it can be blue, pink, or yellow, or orange haha. This year they added glitter and man oh man! i love to be shiny but after the run it will stay on a few days haha. Glitter is so hard to get ride of and will stick to your skin for a while. Also each station had about 3 to 5 people on each side and throw color powder on you. The color powder is edible so no worries about it. i think it is just food coloring flour. EVENT LOCATION Awesome location! each year, starts around 4th and capitol, goes through old sac, and down to broadway and back to 5th and capitol. The after run party which they have a guest dj to play edm which is electronic dance music, during the day time to get the party started. They also got lots of sponsor booths giving away free snacks and bottles of water, and free shirts, hats, and etc. COURSE ROUTE The course route was quite average. The more cautious part is in old sac where you have to run through those uneven floors where you can easily twist your ankles if you don't watch where you step. There are some incline during the course when we ran along the side with the view of the freeway. i did feel my legs working harder than usual. Rest of the course was mostly just regular and easier than the 2 above i have mentioned. I think its a great course for you to experience if you never done a 5k. PEOPLE Awesome friendly people with smiles and ready to just have fun and run and get fit! Everyone was just so colorful after the run! AFTER RUN PARTY This is my favorite part of the run. Loved how they had a guest DJ playing electronic dance music which made my whole body shake it. Following those beats really made me sweat and gave me a good workout/ cool down after the 5k run. Also when you get to the finish line they hand out color packets. With the color packets you can throw them in the air near the main stage where they play the music. If your a photographer you will end up taking some cool shots! Overall If you never done a 5k run, i highly suggest you to go to one, because workout never had been so fun! you will get all excited to train yourself and get ready for the next ones. These events are great motivation! Just prepare to get colored, sweaty, and messy! one of the happiest run i have done in a while!

SO MUCH FUN!!!!! I have run a lot of races in my day but this was by far the most fun out of any of them!! The color is a mess and just about impossible to get off, BUT, totally worth it! We had a group of 6 run it and everyone had so much fun!! All 13,000 people there were in a great mood, great spirits and great attitudes!! If you are thinking of doing one of these I say go for it!! EVERYTHING you wear will be affected by the colored powder though... I mean socks, shoes, small clothes (underwear) shirt, hair, private parts and more.... it gets EVERYWHERE!!! haha... you are going to need the rough side of a sponge to get the caked on stuff off but it comes off and doesn't seem to ruin anything... We washed everything and the white clothes were the only ones that didn't come completely clean... they came "mostly" clean but still had some left over stains on them.... Just wear as much white as you can and plan to get covered in color!! That's the point right? It wasn't hard to breathe in the color zones at all... kind of hard to see at times but it's very short stretch and if you want to, which would be lame, you can go around the cloud to avoid it... Most people walk, some run..... we ran and made the best of the traffic jams that occur before the water station and the color clouds... My final thought....This crap about it going to profit.... GOOD!!! What is wrong with someone making money? Nothin!! If you're mad about that then you should have done your research before buying the ticket... other than that... have fun! :)

What a blast! This was the first year ever for The Color Run - both locally and nationally - and it's easy to see why its popularity has expanded so quickly. Even in its first year, Sacramento's run sold out with over 15,000 runners. The beauty of this 5K is that it injects the fun back into running (or walking, if that's your thing). The environment is friendly for both kids and adults, and anyone - from the seasoned marathoner to a 5K first-timer - can join in the fun without feeling self-conscious. The run isn't timed and so the competitive edge lessens while the fun factor increases exponentially with every toss of the colored powder. And wow, will you get pelted with color - which is, of course, a good thing. By the last color station, runners had given up any semblance of humility and and taken to making blue snow angels in the street just to soak up more of the hue. Organizers had a giant color party waiting at the finish, where you could use your own personal packet of color to its fullest potential, whether that be on yourself, on your friends, or during the group color tosses that made for great photo opportunities. Overall this was a wonderful event, and I look forward to next year! Tips: Register early to save yourself up to $15, or gather a group of four or more to pay the cheaper team price. And blondes, consider protecting your hair. The Color Run organizers claim the dust is completely washable, but I'm now the proud owner of two well earned green streaks in my hair even after a thorough washing.

I'm not a big fan of paying to run, but this was pretty worth it. The biggest complaint I have is that they only cover you in color at each kilometer (5 total, obviously). You can get color packets beforehand and they give you some at the end, but having an all out color fest would make the event a lot more fun. The run goes through some of the nicer areas of downtown Sac, so enjoy the pleasant neighborhoods. It ends at Capitol Mall where there's a pretty cool concert and some free swag. Be prepared to get messy because you definitely will by the end.

Afterwards, they had people cross the start line in waves to prevent overcrowding on the course. I think I was in the last wave and we didn't start until 9:00. The course consisted of lights and techno music but parts of the course were dark and quiet. It felt like we went off course towards the end because it wasn't well marked, but we were able to figure it out. There was also an after-party in a building. It was a lot of fun. First start time was at 8pm. But since there were 10,000 participants, my team's start was around 8:45pm. While we were waiting for our official countdown, the m.c.'s were throwing down some free stuff into the brightly colored crowd. I caught an LED ring. Totally awesome! Then we were off...into the darkness! What happenned to all the lighted arches and pillars? Where were the speakers blasting the music? I was expecting more of the route to be lit up in some way. And it was, but only at a few certain points along the way. Nothing as grand as I had hoped for. For a $50 reg fee, I guess I did expect more lights and music along the way. But it was cool enough, and just to look back at everyone behind me in their glow-in-the-dark attire was such a fantasmic sight. I really recommend this run to anyone who likes to have fun, and doesn't consider this a real "run". It's all about creativity, costumes, and bright lights. The route had us going through the parking lot, over bridges, through tunnels, and into buildings. There were plenty of background set ups for photo ops. One weird thing was that I didn't see any "official" finish line. Did I miss it? We just kinda ended up in an open space, in front of the building where the after-party was being held. It was a bit anti-climactic for a finish line. We didn't dare set foot into the sweaty mess of the after-party, although, if you're into that sort of stuff, it did look pretty wild. Can't wait for next year's run. GIves me plenty of time to start working on that glow-in-the-dark body suit!

A few citizens were friendly enough to stand out front with hoses to spray willing runners (I wish there were more nice people doing that!). I also met a LOT of nice dogs (I decided to stop for at least two cups of gatorade at every station and pet every dog on the way, plus walking 2 miles with an ankle cramp and stopping twice for toilets - finished in 2:05). The event was run pretty smoothly - they had official timing spots all throughout the route - and there were some great sponsors - Zico was there once again with their awesome coconut water, and I had a great big chunk of the heart of a watermelon at the snack tent (yum!). Hubby also didn't get his Water bottle he was supposed to get as a Zombie (being out in the sun for 2hrs they are much needed!) Volunteers: Great! Very encouraging and upbeat. One showed great concern when he thought I was bleeding.. turned out it was just fake blood from one of the Zombies. Zombies: Great for the most part. There were a lot of people that took it very seriously dressing up for the occasion and staying in character throughout. However, despite the DJ announcing almost every 15 minutes that no physical contact was to be had (Zombies with Humans while trying to get their life belts and vice versa) a couple of female Zombies decided to tag team me - one grabbing hold of my arm while the other took 2 of my life belts before I got away. So not cool. Zombies had their make up and blood done prior to the event which was fairly speedy. The make up artists did a great job. "Woah.. That's one fast Human!" Overheard by a Zombie dude as I dodged and sprinted past him while his friend chased me up the dirt ramp. Location: I've done run's at the Raceway before and it's an ok location. This run was originally scheduled for somewhere else and was moved to here. I think this effected the course. The Course: It was fun but a little disappointing after the location switch up. I was looking forward to the section where they were due to set up a street scene with car wrecks ect. With the location change it was turned into more of a mud run with Zombies as it was the same course used for Mud Factor and Dirty girl with much the same obstacles. Still fun though. Personal experience: As I was just there with my Husband and he was a Zombie I was running most of the course solo which made me an easy target for the Zombies (always safety in numbers people!) I had a great time, especially at the obstacles and I was pretty pleased that I made it to the end with a life belt in tact and bagged myself the ''Survivor" title. Good to know that should the Living Dead style apocalypse ever happen I will fair pretty well. Will definitely do this event, maybe as a Zombie next time.

This event was really good and lots of fun. Many people were crushed when the original Run For Your…read moreLives closed up shop, but The Zombie Run took the flag and ran with it, keeping the zombie runs alive! Apologies for the puns... honestly not intended. This event wasn't quite as good as the Run For Your Lives run, only because it didn't take place in the hills and woods like the 2013 Run For Your Lives run did. Really, that is the only thing preventing the 5 star rating. The terrain was too flat, but the race organizers did a great job working to overcome that. Honestly, we were just really spoiled by the 2013 run location. I'd love to see them use the Oasis off-road race track near Clearlake, CA again in the future. That said, this event had bigger and muddier obstacles which were awesome. We especially enjoyed the big rope walls, rope tresses, spider web, mud pits and barbed wire mud puddles. I just wish they still had the buildings you ran through in the Run For Your Lives run, and the electrical wire. It was a little too light on the zombies, but there were still many great "Ohcrapohcraphohcraphohcraph" moments where you had to sprint as fast as you could to get away. The zombies who were working this day did a great job and really made the race fun. They had great costumes, make up and were really in character. I saw several who were also "Good guy Greg" zombies - they made it a challenge for the runners, but didn't obsess over getting as many flags as they could. They made the runners work for it, but would let them by if they could tell the runner was giving it their best effort. A small minority of zombies did cheesy things like grabbing flags when runners fell and were obviously hurt - but hey - its the apocalypse right? Otherwise I can't express enough appreciation for Human Movement management keeping the "real, good" national zombie run alive. Thanks guys - your hard work gives us something to train for year round, because we all know running sucks unless you've got a reason. Like being chased by a horde of zombies. Awesome.

If you drive a Subaru, you get a VIP parking pass which entitles you to park near the race area. I received an email stating that if you drive your Subaru, parking would be free. This was NOT the case and we forked over $12! UGH. I picked up my race packet that morning, which included my bib number, a sample sized Larabar, Merrell's Down and Dirty tech shirt and cap and a trial sized Paul Mitchell shampoo bottle. I noticed several people opted to participate in the brick division, by carrying a backpack of bricks through the courses. Much respect to them! Several others had full blown costumes like superheroes or Halloween themed outfits. This race puts you up to the ultimate challenge - a 3.1 mile test of physical endurance and strength by completing over 10 obstacles. These included climbing over walls, scaling a 24 foot cargo net, jumping over logs, crawling through mud pits, carrying sandbags and trekking through the lake. The biggest challenge was conquering "heartbreak hill" and walking up it was tough! My quads started burning after the first half mile going up the hill and walking down wasn't any easier! Thank goodness they had water stations at every mile. I received a Merrell Down and Dirty Dog tag for completing the course. Photo ops were available right next to the finish line and at the 'Mud hand print' mural. To rinse off, we went through an inflatable Subaru car wash station, but it wasn't effective. A hose station was nearby and people worked in teams to wash the mud off each other. Make sure to bring black plastic garbage bags for the car ride home, towels and extra clothes! A charity group also went around to see if participants wanted to donate their shoes toward homeless families. The race partners with Operation Gratitude, who sends care packages to U.S service members overseas. Thumbs up for this race! A few battlewounds - scrapes on my knees and splinters from the cargo net rope (Mental note to wear gloves next time) but was well worth it for a great cause and fun time!

I had signed up in February for the 5K race initially scheduled for Sunday, April 5th to mark my 6-month return to Orangetheory and also my company wellness program would cover registration costs. Around mid-March, the race organizers had decided to reschedule the race to Sunday, June 21st (Father's Day) due to COVID-19 and avoiding large groups from coming together. On June 1st, the 2020 ROTE was converted to a Virtual Run. Proceeds still benefitted the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation and most expenses were prepaid (shirts, bibs, medals) so all that you had to do was sign up, run/walk your distance (Kids 1 Mile, 5K, 10K, or Half Marathon race) on or before Friday, July 31st. Run anytime and anywhere you choose. Proof of completion (virtual participation finish time) submitted through Google Form (no GPS, proof via Strava, etc. required, sort of an honor system) and encouraged to tag any photos on social media as #ROTEVirtual2020. On Saturday, August 8th, volunteers set up at Fleet Feet Elk Grove from 11am-3pm the Post Run Celebration to pick up the microfiber technical shirt (cotton for kids), really awesome finisher's medal, and swag bag. If you placed in your age division you got an additional medal, standings published for those entrants who submitted. This part went smoothly and was pretty convenient, not much different from packet pickup at a normal race, or a vendor/expo booth. I've done a few virtual races before (pre-pandemic) to support non-local organizations or if they had a cool race theme/swag. The hardest part was actually lacing up and running outdoors with a mask (pre-fires) after slacking on fitness routines during this weird time. My last actual race was the Elk Grove Gobble Wobble 5K on Thanksgiving Day -- the December Running of the Elves got rained out and I also did that virtually/remotely, so this may be the new norm for the rest of the year. #runningisnotcanceled

Running of the Elk is a small local race in Elk Grove. There's a 5k, 10k, half marathon and a kids…read morerun. The 10k and half marathon starts at the same time and the 5k starts afterwards. The 10k and half marathon run on the same route for a few miles and eventually splits up. I did the half marathon. It's a very family friendly event and I saw a lot of families doing 10ks and even half marathons together! Kids these days are so fit. I highly recommend to carry water with you during the race. For the first time during one of my half marathons, I ran out of water. There's not that many water stations. This route does not have much shade and it's in spring so it can get warm. The water station only has water and Gatorade, no food. The Gatorade was kind of diluted but it was better than nothing. The course starts at Long Leaf Drive, through the Automall, neighborhoods, streets, and trails. This is my first time running in Elk Grove. The course had so much variety that enabled me to explore Elk Grove on foot. It's a beautiful city. I would definitely do this half marathon again! The First Aid station is mobile-- There are bikers who ride back and forth through the course carrying a first aid kit. The finisher area made up for the lack of fuel stations and limited water stations during the course. They serve pancakes here! There's plenty of refreshments from fruit, Gatorade, granola bars, to bagels. The kids area has a bounce house, popcorn, and cotton candy. Kaiser also has complimentary massages. The wait is long so put your name down as soon as you finish.
