When I got pregnant and left the city for park slope I thought my Sunday fundays at neighborhood joints that I frequented enough to know my name were over..... then came the commissioner!! My husband and I met one of the owners Brendan when we were frequent patrons of whiskey tavern. When he broke out to start a new bar in park slope I knew it was fate. The staff is friendly, the food is great, they have enough tvs to watch a game, great cocktails, the ambience is welcoming, and they even let the occasional well behaved baby in when it isn't packed. The Commissioner is the Chevrolet rental car of Park Slope bars. This is a tame, mediocre bar of the sort that you could find in any suburb in the U.S., with nothing divey or creative or edgy or hip or upscale about it at all. The crowd on the night we went was mostly young 20-somethings in shorts. The music was corny 80s fare, played at high volume. There's a photo booth. Apparently they serve tater tots. There are darts and shuffleboard and TVs, but this does not seem like the sort of place people would go for a proper darts league or to pay attention to the game. This neighborhood has way better bars (and it is no bar mecca). For a proper sports bar, try 200 Fifth. For a beery dive bar, go to the High Dive, 2 doors down. For neighborhood charm, try the Gate. For a good cocktail, try the Blueprint. But unless mediocrity's your thing, you can skip the Commissioner. read more

This bar is amazing! Great atmosphere, food & drinks, plus an unbelievably accommodating and friendly staff. I reached out to Brendan hoping (but not expecting) to secure a last-minute reservation for a birthday gathering and he got back to me right away with a "Yes!" When we arrived, they had reserved an area toward the back replete with balloons and birthday signage which was way above and beyond what I expected and was such a nice gesture. The owners, wait-staff, bartenders, bussers and kitchen staff were all fantastic (shout-out to Donna and Scott who were extremely friendly and attentive the whole night). The place is super friendly and if you want to have a chill night with no dancing this would be the place. Drinks are reasonably priced. There is a shuffle board table and darts. The DJ on Saturday's is not about dancing but it's about just talking and drinking. The music is upbeat but it's not dancing music at all. read more

My husband and I have made The Commissioner our go-to spot in Park Slope. It's the type of place where they remember you and go the extra mile to make you feel welcome. The food is good (their fries taste like a large basket of McDonald's fries in the best way) and the selection of beer and whiskey are great. It can get packed on the weekend, so come on a weekday or Sunday evenings for the best quiet time. Plus, they always have good games on and specials during football! Great service followed up with great happy hour food and drinks. We are from Denver and stopped in while wandering around park slope before the Islander game. Anna was our bartender and made us feel right at home. She introduced herself and actually wanted to know our names. There was not a moment where she wasn't paying attention to us. You know how movies have the perfect bars, with the perfect bartenders, the perfect cold beer, and the perfect bar menu to make your knees weak? This is THAT perfect bar but in real life. And just like in the movies, we happened to stumble on this gem by accident. We were thirsty and I was hungry for the tater tots. As if by some kind of magical-miracle-happenstance, we walk by The Commissioner, look inside and see a nice little crowd sitting at this warmly lit bar. We sat down and quickly got greeted by our new best friend, the bartender/owner/nicest guy. Long story short...You'll love this place. You have to go, now. Order anything off the menu, it'll be delicious. I'm personally a tater tots gal and these were great tater tots, fried in just the right way with a crunchy outside and a soft inside. We asked the Commissioner if we could host our wedding after party with them and they were more than happy to accommodate us without any minimum or fees. To our surprise, they set up wedding decorations and poured my husband me a glass of champagne, rang a loud bell, and had the whole bar toast to us, which was the perfect cherry on top of an incredible day. They went above and beyond and provided excellent service into the next morning. THANKS, GUYS!!! As soon as life calms down, we will be back to thank you in person. You were amazing. Great bartenders. Affordable, even cheap, at least by neighborhood standards. Never dead but always a spot. Dark but not dank. Good TV setup for sports, but the kind of place you can be in during a game and not really notice the sports if you don't care to. The food is solid and reasonably priced (Nashville hot chicken sandwich stands above the unspectacular burger). An excellent neighborhood bar. read more

I can't believe I have not popped in sooner. I was walking by late afternoon and saw a sign suggesting frozen margaritas. I was intrigued because most pub style bars would never have a blender and if they did the bartenders would with good reason pretend it was broken. I was intrigued and decided to stop in and order a frozen margarita. Much to my surprise they have a rockin full blown legit margarita machine and their take on said margarita was amazing. The three owners are cousins and if you stop in you will more than likely meet one of them. I met one of the cousins. He was working a crowded weekday early afternoon bar full of daytime drinking enthusiasts. John took time for everyone and had an eye on the crowd. I was greeted with a warm welcome and had my frozen Margarita in record breaking time, given the amount of people he was tending to. Also, he didn't pester me when my margarita was 1/3rd full encouraging me to get another before I was ready and this is the sign to me of a great bartender/server...... attentive but not invasive. The menu is well rounded and there is something for everyone including the thousands of PS kids in this neighborhood. The prices are more than reasonable in my mind very affordable. There is a photo booth, table top shuffle board, games and an ATM machine. They really thought of everything. The restrooms are even clean and there are two which is always a crowd pleaser in this neighborhood. If you have not stopped in I encourage you to...its a great place to meet a group of friends or to take your family for a meal. The Commissioner is a great add to Park Slope. It has a very casual but upscale feel to it. We wondered into the bar a couple days after opening. The staff makes it a point to introduce themselves and are friendly and warm. It's got a great local bar vibe and a great story behind the name. The crew behind the bar are passionate about making it a success and I wish them great success! Food is real good, NC style pulled pork and smoked buffalo wings (I was skeptical, now I am addicted) are highlights. Prices are affordable. Tabletop shuffleboard and now darts. I was really sad when Pork Slope closed it's doors, but one visit to The Commissioner made me feel better. This place is what Park Slope was missing. A solid, friendly bar with a good and simple menu. Family run, the owners are always friendly and making sure everyone is happy. Like Pork Slope, The Commissioner is an awesome bar without sacrificing tasty food. The pork Tacos and burger are good enough that I'd stop in even if I wasn't in the mood for a drink.
