DO NOT USE - Unreliable Roofing Contractor - Nightmare!…read more We hired Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. in June 2022 to repair the roof of our condo building and build a new deck on top of it. Unfortunately, our experience with them was a nightmare, and we feel compelled to share it with others to prevent anyone else from going through the same ordeal. First and foremost, the contractor used incorrect materials while building the deck. To add insult to injury, they charged us for more expensive materials than they actually used, displaying a complete lack of integrity and transparency. We mutually agreed with the contractor in advance in writing that the roof deck would be built with "Trex Transcend" composite decking in Rope Swing color; the contractor, however, built our roof deck with "Trex Enhance G2 Grooved" composite decking in Foggy Wharf color, a material of much lesser quality that is already breaking in some areas. To make matters worse, the deck construction was carried out in a way that now leaves our roof in violation of building codes. Not only did they fail to adhere to regulations, but they also neglected to inform us of these potential issues during the process, and when we let them know that their work was out of code, they did not apologize, would not fix their work to align with code, and blamed it on us when they are the experts. Furthermore, upon inspection by independent experts, it was determined that the roof deck framing is not structurally sound. We were advised that (a) there are narrow pieces of wood supporting the west side of the roof deck, which do not align with standards of practice in the industry and will pierce the roof's membrane as weight is applied, (2) the roof substructure was laid incorrectly, preventing the free flow of water to the scuppers, and (3) already, various portions of the roof deck are loose and detached from the frame, making the roof deck unsafe to walk on. This poses a substantial risk to the safety of those in our building and our guests. Throughout the project, communication was very difficult and minimal, and they showed little to no concern for our satisfaction or the quality of their work. When we raised our concerns, they were dismissive and unresponsive, leaving us feeling frustrated and deceived. We strongly advise anyone considering hiring Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. to NOT HIRE THEM. Their unprofessionalism, lack of expertise, and disregard for customer satisfaction have left us with a costly and dangerous mess to clean up, including having to re-do all of the work. On top of that, we reached out for a refund, and they would not comply or even respond to us despite their defective, fraudulent and grossly negligent acts and omissions, and we will need to re-perform the work with a new vendor. Please learn from our unfortunate experience and look for a reputable and trustworthy contractor to handle your roofing and deck projects who is NOT Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. Don't let yourself fall victim to the same nightmare we endured.

Mike who is the owner first started off very nice, then as late may went by I contacted him with no response. Time has gone by and they finished the job and man was it sloppy! Then a neighbor was getting a new fence recently, and the fence looked great. I received a reasonable quote from them for replacing my fence, and since I had witnessed how well they worked on my neighbor's fence, I hired them. So glad that I did! The new fence is sturdy, panels were put in place evenly and carefully, and overall the new fence is a great asset to my yard. I would definitely hire them again for other projects!!

I don't understand why you guys waste my wife's time looking at project, then don't follow up. If the job is not big enough just tell us, don't waste our time. We recently hired Chicago Porch Experts by Emtrak Construction to redeck the third floor and then power wash and stain the entire porch. We had a terrible experience. The primary issue is with communication and organization. The actual work, primarily the redecking, is good, which is saving them from a one-star rating. But they lack the organizational skills to work on a project of this scope. I'm not going to list out every single incident, but there was a lot of miscommunication throughout the entire process that caused a ton of strife for the building. Lots of my emails went unanswered, and they refused to schedule anything, even when I'd ask for tentative dates, in favor of either showing up unannounced or only giving me 12 hours notice of when work would start. I have to give ample heads up to the building so that they can move their furniture and so that they know they won't have access to the deck for the day. Despite telling them this, Chicago Porch Experts would not/could not accommodate this. They tried to make things right, I'll give them credit for that, but it was not sufficient for the amount of issues created. Out of all the contractors I've worked with in my role as president, this is the worst of them by far. I don't recommend using Chicago Porch Experts if you're a condo association or anyone looking to have larger work done past simple decks for single family residences.
