Star Tuckpointing weather sealed our 3 story condo building (in 2023) and filled every single potential inlet for water on the exterior, some of which we were aware of and many of which the residents didn't. They did a tremendous job, we didn't expect any company to be so thorough and timely. They did silicone sealant, and two coats of paint and some mortar work where needed. It's not something any HOA wants to have to do, but all units couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. The building is better sealed than it was when it was brand new. The job involved rebuilding of the chimney. An initial written proposal was provided that detailed the work to be completed. While the quote was on the high end relative to other similar businesses, I chose them based on their reviews of work completed for others. Indeed the work was done well and the outcome as described both by the initial assessment completed by Peter, and as described by Voytek. When Voytek came by to arrange for the work to begin, I inquired as to the length of time needed to complete the job. Two to three days was his answer, leaving the impression that work would require that much time. On day one the crew showed up at 8. Later that day Voytek called to say that they needed to extend the reconstruction further down than expected and that an addition $950 would be required to do the job. I thought that was quite a bit beyond the initial quote of $4300. He said $800 was as low as he could go. Interestingly, at the end of day one, the crew had completed all of the reconstruction, dismantled their scaffolding and departed by 5 pm. On day two workers returned and applied the mortar to the chimney; they were at the job no more than 90 minutes max. Two weeks later two men returned and sprayed sealant on the mortar, a job that took 20 - 30 minutes. Based on the fact that the total job took no more than one work day plus another two hours of work time, I did not feel an additional $800. was merited. I paid the bill as originally proposed. After payment, a final invoice came through two weeks after I mailed a check with not an additional $800, but an additional $500. Not clear why the proposed additional costs changed. Honestly, I felt the additional proposed cost was taking advantage of me. When discussing it with Voytek, he said they did not quote jobs based on actual work time required for the job, but that three days was merited because they completed the work over a period of three days even though the total work time didn't add up to a total of a day and a half of work hours. These people did very good quality work, but I find the methods of price manipulation difficult to accept since the amount of additional work did not extend anyone's actual work day. I would suggest that future clients ask them to clearly stipulate the amount of time the job actually requires and how that determines final costs. The fuzzy method of adding costs but not needing more time to do the job was not acceptable to me. read more

We finally got around to fix some nagging issues with our chimney on our 80 yr old house. The attempts at fixing the obvious deterioration with tuckpointing clearly wasn't working. Thankfully, our neighbor had used Star Tuckpointing on their chimney several years ago, with outstanding results, and so we knew who to contact. I was impressed with the efficiency and knowledge of both Peter and Voytek in explaining our particular problem and recommending a solution. I guess that comes with the many years they have been in the business. The job was completed without a hitch, and the site was left clean. As an aside, in doing the work it was noticed that a portion of our flat roof needed some attention, and we were alerted to the issue by Voytek. My almost 90-year-old bungalow needed some tuckpointing. I got an estimate from another company and then called Star, which had done work for me before. Star's estimate was a much better value, so I went with them. They showed up on time, finished on time, and they were great communicators. I had the south side of my house tuckpointed where there was spalling from water and condensation, the garage where some bricks were cracked and crumbling, and the chimney cap replaced. We knew we had a problem with the bricks on our home, built in 1944, because we could see water-soaked brick after each rainstorm. We contacted Star Tuckpointing based on the reviews on this site, and we are so glad we did. The first brother to come gave us a clear assessment, and the second brother brought the crew out (father, uncle, godfather, cousin) and gave us clear information about what would be done. When repairs became more extensive that either of us realized, he was able to show us where walls were bowed, steel beams were rotted, bricks were crumbling, What really impressed me was the fact that this company collected old Chicago brick and used it to replace our damaged brick. From start to finish, working with Star Tuckpointing was so easy and they do an incredible job. My project was pretty big (tuckpointing entire front face of a 1929 Tudor home, spot tucking other places, and lintel replacement) and due to covid and the weather, we waited several months--but trust me, they are worth the wait! We do not have easy brick--it's almost 100 years old and is wire cut which makes tuckpointing the brick more tedious. Peter is a fabulous tuckpointer--he did an incredible job of keeping the wire-cut brick clean while tuckpointing between the bricks. I cannot rate Star Tuckpointing highly enough. They have systematically saved our building money over the past few years by being kind, awesome, honest business-people. Peter came out to advise our 8-unit condo building on what seemed a major leak. Solution - a simple caulk job, which we did ourselves, that worked. They made no money in this instance, of course, showing great integrity. We subsequently had him out to quote a job to spot tuckpoint the entire building. They were a fair price compared to the other two companies who quoted, and their competitive but thorough estimate won them our contract. This turned out to be a fantastic decision, and I would HIGHLY recommend hiring Star. They provided seasoned and honest masons who advised us on general building health and timelines for future work. They completed the work within the originally stated timeline. Voytek, the coordinator, was exceptionally reliable, easy to coordinate with, and remained pleasant and professional. But what really stood out was that the masons took notice of a number of cracks and chinks that were outside of the scope of the work and patched them for us, too! Some were cosmetic, but some were both cosmetic and functional. Our building now feels tight and secure for the coming winter. In the course of talking with Voytek, I found out that their teams of masons are highly skilled, with most working for them for many years, and that they dedicate certain teams of masons to certain types of projects such as brick or greystone/brownstone waterproofing, tuckpointing, rebuilds, etc. I recommend Star for any job, big or small. Our building capstones around the roof parapet were installed during construction without a moisture barrier or wicking. Additionally, there as lots of need for Tuckpointing on the face of our building and the inside walls of the parapet. None had been done in the building since it was build over 10 years ago. Peter initially came out to do a walkthrough with me to prepare a bid. He was very thorough and professional, taking time to explain everything to me. Voytek handled the project once it began as my main point fo contact. He was extremely responsive and had everything very well organized. The project was completed on time and very professionally. I really enjoyed working with Voytek because of his responsiveness. He was quick to return calls and was onsite himself at times with the crew. He gave me a clear understanding of what work was being done and scheduling. Being in a self managed building means me and the rest of the board are often tasked with securing bids and organizing maintenance projects. If you are in Chicago and have had to do this, you know how difficult it can be to even get a contract to call you back after your initial inquiry. These guys are awesome. We have a twelve unit condo building that's over 100 years old and had been having some seepage issues in a couple of the upper units. Roofing companies all suggested we have a masonry company look at our parapets; no surprise, after 100 years, they needed rebuilding. Star was one of four companies we had out to do estimates. Two of the four were in and out in under fifteen minutes, and gave us bids of half of what Star and the other company gave and only suggested partial rebuilds; Peter from Star took his time getting up on the roof, walking completely around the building, and showing me where mortar was failing and lintels needed replacing. Star (and the other company) explained the rationale for doing a larger rebuild and although it meant more expense, I think their thoroughness was the way to go. Other than one snafu with the initial estimate missing charges for some roofing, communication was thorough, and both Peter and his brother Voytek were quick to respond to questions and concerns throughout the process. The work took about three weeks, and they did a fantastic job with everything, from keeping the details of the original brick and sandstone, to clean up, to doing a bit of extra mortar work gratis around the building where we thought we had a rodent hole. We have a few more lintels to do in our future, and we plan on using Star again. read more

They're very thorough in the process of providing an estimate, and worked with us on revising the scope of work to get it within our budget. Grinding mortar, brick, and steel is messy work, but they always cleaned and straightened up the job site, and finished within the time frame they had estimated. I have used Star Tuckpointing on my house (and former condo building) many times over the past 10 years. The most recent project was to flash underneath the limestone caps on my garage roof parapet wall which was not done by the original contractor. His team did the work flawlessly and as discussed in his proposal. We also had a separate but very persistent leak in the garage which was very tricky to source. Voytek patiently visited my house several times after rainstorms and found the source and sealed it up with silicone. He has been an excellent resource for advice on our brick house and garage and has a great team under his supervision to perform the work.
