C is for cookie, and cookie is for me! What a quaint little place! The monster cookie was recommended to me, but they were sold out by the time my group moseyed in (they did have monster BARS though). My stash included a snickerdoodle (yum!), heath (double yum!), and the last cowboy cookie (choc chips, rice krispies, and nuts maybe?). +10 points to the lady at the cashier who said "and the last cowboy cookie is riding off into the distance...". Guffaw, snort, giggle. I prefer my cookies a little chewier, but I'd come back if I'm ever back in SD again. P.S. The good: Great place if you're looking for a sweet tooth fix. The Cowboy cookies and Special K bars are delish! The bad: I've only dined in once and maybe it was an anomaly, but the service was severely lacking and the lunch food was just so so. Maybe my expectations were too high, because I just expect darn good service and happy employees from these little mom & pop shops. Isn't that the charm of them? Unfortunately, the staff just wasn't very friendly and it took forever to get waited on. After the food came, the waitress was never to be seen again leaving me to figure out you are on your own to settle up at the counter when you're finished with your meal. Came here for lunch and had a great experience. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich, and the ham and potato soup. The sandwich was nice with "pulled" chicken and just the right amount of sauce. You could tell the bread was homemade and fresh, A+. The soup was also good, not too salty. This week is customer appreciation week so they were giving away a free cookie with each meal purchase. I selected the "monster" cookie, which is peanut butter with m&m's. It was crisp toward the edges and chewy in the middle. Overall a good meal and an excellent value for $9. read more

Lunch at The Cookie Jar was very disappointing. One of the blandest meals I have had in ages. I had the chili and my boyfriend had the sloppy joe. Both were bland. The hash brown casserole was good for a Midwest hot dish. Then came the pie. One of the worst I've had...ever. One bite will do. It was more like strawberry rhubarb jello in a grainy crust. Often when you eat only a single bite of a menu item, the server will ask is it is okay. Not at the Cookie Jar. I think she knows the pie sucks. Everyone that is in SF HAS to eat here!!! They have great lunch combinations with a sandwich, soup and dessert. But this isn't no ordinary sandwich, soup or dessert. I ordered the egg salad sandwich and the bun they served it on was worthy of a sandwich prize! The soup was good. The dessert, though, was awesome!!! I unfortunately can't speak for their affordable and diverse breakfast and lunch offerings but I can reflect upon the privilege my mouth experienced whilst masticating one of the cookies from their jar. I purchased a "bomb.com" cookie. Expectations were high, as was nostalgia for the vintage catchphrase, and the cookie did not disappoint. I did not read what actually was on the cookie but a more discerning consumer may read the label in the case for accuracy. The cookie was everything a cookie should be. Flavorful, moderately crumbly as a result of moisture (not dryness), appropriately sized, and consistent throughout (did not have the crispy edge and barely moist middle that is found at a lesser cookie purveyor). Quiet with a wide selection to choose from on their menu. I had the Buffalo Chicken basket, with cheesy hash browns, and a chocolate chip cookie. Everything was served in a very timely manner and tasted excellent. Atmosphere is a modern touch on an old style dinner. The space isn't very big which may cause issues around lunch time. My advice would be to show up before 11:30am or after 1pm if you want to guarantee yourself a place to sit. read more

I used to love the Phillips Avenue Baking Company for the fresh sandwiches and soup. When they closed I didn't realize there was a place just as tasty around the corner. This was my first visit at the Cookie Jar. They have great fresh baked bread and treats and tasty soup. I got the classic (soup, bread, and a cookie). It was delish. They had great and fast service, too; it's clear this is family owned and they care about their customers. Way too expensive for lunch....and their lunch basket "specials" are not a deal and in reality cost more than if you ordered them individually. So it cost me$10.53 including tax for me to eat there today and that was their lunch special. Granted I did buy a bottle of pop, but still WAY too expensive. So I also asked them some questions about prices and crunched some numbers and discovered that they are ripping people off! So I ordered the Friday special with chips and a bottled pop and the total was $10.53 with tax Here is what I ordered broken down at individual prices Daily special sandwich: $4.75 Chips: $1.50 Bar/cookie $1.78 Bottle of pop $1.87 Total: $9.90 + 6% tax= $10.49; not a big difference, but they are duping people everytime!! I live an hour away and I had ordered a Lego star wars birthday cake for my son and what I got was not what I sent them in my email. I drove for 2 hours round trip for a cake that was not what I wanted! If I could give them zero stars I would. My son was absolutely crushed when he saw the cake. Apparently they are only good at print cakes and can't make a custom cake. On top of that I told them that there would be 10 people eating the cake. The cake was so small that only 4 people were able to eat it. Completely disgusted with the product. Will never go here again and would advise you not to get a custom cake made here! After having tasted the cake I can truly say that it was the worse cake I've ever had. It tasted l I keep cardboard and sawdust. I would've been better off buying a box mix at Walmart and making the cake myself. they charged me $30 for crap. honestly people, don't waste your money here. We had lunch here today... a bit disappointing. We were interested in the soup and were told they were out. We had chili which was a smaller than average bowl for $5.68 with crackers. It was tasty though. We order a side salad as well. Very undersized, maybe a lettuce leaf and two grape tomatoes for $3.30. We all left still hungry! Would we return, probably not. Great place for kids, too! iI've been here AT LEAST once a month for the past couple of years, with friends, adult relatives and especially with grandkids--very kid-friendly (even table games available, plus crayons & kids' menu). Home-made style chili and a variety of excellent soups, their own bread--kids LOVE the hot dog mini loaves. Only one time a poor service issue and that was rapidly corrected by the owner.
