We went into this lovely little store and was greeted by a super nice young lady who was busily making cookies. She told us if we bought 6 we would get 2 free. So naturally being a cookie lover I said heck yes let's 6 and get 2 for free! But The Cookie Shop in downtown Rapid City aims to change that perception. This locally owned, cookie-centric bakery operated under the Mary's Mountain Cookies moniker until a recent name change, but everything else about the shop has remained the same. The storefront is tucked underneath an unlabeled black awning beside the local legend Tally's Silver Spoon. Inside the single-room space, shelves of ingredients and stainless steel industrial baking equipment stretch all the way back. Christmas lights are strung from the ceiling, and the deep purple and forest green walls are minimally decorated with mountain-y tchotchkes. The blackboard counter is chalked with a Mt Rushmore-themed mural, and each cookie variety has a Sharpie-on-parchment paper description. I stopped by The Cookie Shop on a weekday morning, and I ordered right away. Across all the cookies, the dough was chewy with a dynamically rich flavor. Our far-and-away favorite was the Cookies 'N Dream -- Oreo buttercream sandwiched between two Oreo-based cookies. You wouldn't be alone in mistaking the thick, creamy frosting for ice cream, and the hockey puck size of each component felt like a sophisticated whoopee pie. But don't sleep on the more toned-down offerings. The Hopscotch (oatmeal-chocolate chip with buttscotch swirls and sugar crystals) paired solid flavors with dynamic texture, while the Americano (chocolate chip with espresso-infused dough) traded sweetness for decadence. Even the day-old leftovers far exceeded most bakeries' freshest of offerings. The service was friendly and efficient, and we were directed around the corner to the sister shop, Speed Goat Express, for coffee. The most expensive cookie varieties clocked in below the $4 mark (hence, comparable to Starbucks, Panera, or Crumbl). But the quality was god-level; it would be no exaggeration to rank The Cookie Shop's creations among the best cookies I've ever eaten, full stop. read more

After having lunch at the Bashful Bison, we noticed a cookie shop was in walking distance to us, so we had to go check out a local cookie place! We decided on an apple cinnamon oatmeal with caramel cookie. It was large, but perfectly cooked - soft and chewy! It had great cinnamon and oat flavor with a caramel drizzle on top, but we really didn't detect apple, so we would have liked more apple spice flavor added. Based on our one experience, we could have easily gone back to try more cookies or their edible cookie dough if we had more time while we were visiting SD. Well the girls that work here made this a fun experience. They were funny, willing to joke around and gave us good cookie advice. I feel bad I forgot their names. We had the chocolate chip, oatmeal chocolate chip and a sourappledoodle (something like that). The chocolate chip cookies were both amazing. I love an oatmeal cookie. These cookies are grande sized too. They are not for the faint of heart. The sour apple was unique but I'm not much for sugar cookies and so it wasn't my favorite but my significant-cookie-loving-other said it was an amazing sugar cookie so there is that... Three cookies were $10 and they probably weighed 2lbs collectively so it felt like a good value. Yelp said they were closed in Sunday so we didn't go back for round two. Perhaps they need to reconsider being open on a Sunday in the summer when downtown is hopping. read more

OH MY GAWD! Do you like crumble cookie? That place is mediocre compared to this place. This small locally owned business is in the heart of Rapid City across from the Alex Johnson (Hilton) hotel. This place opens early in the morning with warm cookies. They also make ice cream sandwiches based on your cookie preference and also sells edible cookie dough. Every time we walked by, this place was busy. Unfortunately, with our other adventures we were not able to go there until the last day, so we took a few for the road. So by Mountain cookies, I think they are referring to their BOLD and inventive flavor and menu options. We're talking s'mores, lemon frosted, froot loop, ranch hand.. Edible cookie dough, cookie ice cream sandwiches, cookie milkshakes?!!? (They call them tornados.) Even with all these flavors, the classic chocolate chip, peanut butter, and snickerdoodle cookies still looked good too. I ended up getting a strawberry cheesecake cookie ice cream sandwich, which was definitely way too sweet for me and I have a sweet tooth. It has two large frosted cookies and maybe a 4 oz. scoop of ice cream, which I didn't take into consideration is a lot for one person. Next time I will get either a single cookie, or the smallest portion of cookie dough. The cookies themselves are delicious and seriously moist with just the right amount of softness. It's hard to order sweets for her because she has had some of the best in the world so she is very picky to say the least. But I decided to go with Mary's Mountain Cookies. So glad I did. She absolutely loved them, we even FaceTimed so she could show them to me. They were thick, beautiful and looked amazing. She raved about how good they were and said they were some of the best she's ever had in her life. I ordered a variety so she could sample each flavor. They were all fabulous.
