I ordered a delivery of just clam chowder and a small hot sub to Devens, MA (the town next to it) at 4:03. 40 minutes later, I call to ask if the delivery driver got lost or something. They hung up to call the driver and over 20 minutes later I finally have received my order. The "hot" sub was soggy and room temperature. The clam chowder was fine, but the worst part is when I called again to offer my feedback they didn't even apologize or offered to take any amount of money off of the order. I at least got my tip money back (debit card tip). read more

Hadn't even touched it, asked if I could get something else + was told no, because "you ordered it, we didn't do anything wrong." My husband and I have been here several times. Usually to grab a pizza. We live only 5 mins up the street, so it is very convenient. Prices are good, pizza is decent (not my fav) but the last 2 times we had our food delivered (again 5 mins away) it took 45 minutes, our food was cold. The last time we ordered a pizza with 3 toppings and an order of fries (which are pretty good) The delivery took an hour. When we finally opened our pizza box, it was a plain cheese, not the 3 topping I had paid for. Now normally I would have called and asked this to be taken care of in some way, but we were starving after an hour of waiting and it was the 3rd bad experience in a row. Very unfortunate. I was looking for some close to home take out pizza and even though this place is right around the corner from where we were, we had never tried it. We ordered a large half cheese and half pepperoni. It arrived about 25-30 min after we ordered. The crust was cooked perfectly, the cheese was a delicious blend, and the pepperoni was crispy. It really hit the spot for my pizza craving. I'd highly recommend this as a pizza joint in Ayer. Probably my favorite. The only reason for the 4 stars is that I've only tried one item on the menu. I can't wait to try more :) read more

Very disappointed with Gluten Free take out pizza and entire experience! I've been a handful of times and ordered a gluten free pizza. In all fairness, each time I've gone, the Gluten Free pizza is probably the best around! And, I've never had a reaction from the pizza. Last night I ordered a gluten free cheese pizza with 2 toppings. I always say at the end of my order, "now that's Gluten-Free, right?" Just to confirm. She confirmed and repeated the order. I get home, eat a piece, and realize the toppings ARE NOT gluten free. The eggplant was breaded in flour and fried. I called and asked the girl who answered the phone if the eggplant was GF. She says she has no idea, but she remembers taking my order. I'm aggravated that she took a GF pizza order but then didn't know which toppings were GF. She said that people order GF pizzas all the time and order regular toppings!!! Really?? Clearly, she could have cared less. I asked to speak to a manager. A young boy gets on the phone and I then ask HIM if he realizes the extent to which this one piece of pizza will have on me. I'll be sick for days now from this mistake. I explained the importance of educating staff of what it means to serve Gluten Free food, and perhaps a little GF awareness training might be in order as well. I'll pursue this further with the owner who wasn't there last night, to avoid this happening to others in the future. But lesson learned.... even if you've eaten somewhere several times, when eating out and you have any food allergy or intolerance, continue to ask as many questions as needed until you know what you are getting. If you are going to have ONE item on your menu that is Gluten Free, you really shouldn't mess it up! read more

I placed a large order for a wedding after party in Groton, and Brian (the owner) was the best! Even though The Cottage closes at 10pm, he and his team there accommodated doing a delivery after their normal closing time given that I was placing a large order (and pleaded politely :) ). The order was VERY much appreciated by hungry wedding after-partiers, and the team at the Cottage was great for making sure we had everything with the delivery we needed to feast late night (plates, napkins, etc.). Plus, of course, the pizza and wings were fresh and delicious!! Definitely 5 stars and would recommend The Cottage for anyone looking for delicious pizza delivery or needing to order for a big party. I wanted to write a review for this restaurant for a few different reasons. First of all, we always order their salads to make my daughter and I feel better about calories (haha), and they are huge and delicious. We usually get the Buffalo Chicken salad or the Steak Tips salads. We have picked up the food, but usually have them deliver, which they always arrive in less the time than the ETA they offer us. Last night we ordered our salads to be delivered after a long work day, and it turned out they had a computer glitch and the orders were behind. The OWNER delivered our food with many apologies, and $ compensations for the delay. I was so impressed with his humility, showing no defensiveness, and coming in person. How professional, and impressive! We will surely continue our patronage and pass the word to friends. Issues happen, and anyone who got hotheaded last night about their order should work at a restaurant for a week or two :) read more

I had the Steak Tip sub several times, a few of those times I got sick with extreme diarrhea, not sure if the steak tips used for the sub are freshly made for the sub, or if they are leftovers from other meals, or just been sitting in the fridge for too long, or if people just don't know how to wash their hands or if it was food contamination IE with raw chicken or pork or something. I still order it, tastes great going down at least. Recently though had the delivery driver, an older white gentlemen w/ a large beard screw up our order and give our food to another location, while making jokes about having dementia.... maybe a doctor's visit is in order. First and last visit on July 3rd, 2012. I read the reviews on yelp (and urban spoon) AFTER my experience two days ago at The Cottage. Not only was the food mediocre, but the service was 100% atrocious. I'm in my late 30's and I've never had service as awful as I did here. Here is the review I shared with friends- every local family I'm acquainted with in fact (which equates to a lot of potential patrons!) "Please, I beg you, do NOT go to The Cottage on Main St in Ayer. I have honestly never, in my many years of being a patron to various businesses, received such atrocious service in my life. We were the only "in house" diners and were beginning to be shooed out of the place a little more than 30 minutes before closing. First with sweeping, then stacking of dining room chairs, followed by a super rude waitress/employee/young college aged girl who asked if she could take our tray away for us (and then proceeded to throw it away with an unbelievable amount of attitude), followed then by the mopping of the floors. We had asked and confirmed at each of these "hints to leave" that closing was at 9pm. When we asked about the mopping and if it would be safe to walk out, "Brian" approached us. He said he is the owner, and then later said he was part owner and that The Cottage belongs to his family, asked us to leave. It was 8:50pm. When we questioned why, rather than answer our question, he told us he'd report us to the police for being rowdy. Wow, just wow. Never will I go back. First and last visit." In addition, I looked up" The Cottage, Ayer" on Facebook to see if they had a "fan/like" page and a picture of "Brian" came up (only because he has The Cottage listed as his employer) identifying him as a 19 year old college student...only according to Facebook this person's name is Zak Keeley- not Brian. Interesting what a little looking around on the internet can turn up- all publicly viewable I might add. I have two friends who have said they like the Cottage and that they find the owner to be great, but they say he's in his 40's- certainly not 19. At this point it is fairly clear to me that a young employee was impersonating the owner which in itself is awful. Seriously, who does that? Lastly, I've read the terribly unprofessional replies from Morris Babcock regarding unfavorable reviews from what appears to be his business (have not confirmed he owns the place), and I will say that I considered going to the establishment to discuss things with the owner since any unfavorable reviews are accused of "hiding behind their posts (submitted to review sites such as this)", but after reading the replies from this person I have opted to write a review- not as an example of hiding behind a post, but in an effort to inform and reach a lot of potential patrons It's good for people to know what they're getting into should they decide to spend their money here. I would most certainly NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone I know based 100% on the level of service (or lack thereof) shown to me and my party on July 3rd, 2012. read more

I have been ordering from the cottage for about 2 years now and find it to be the best tasting pizza in the area (in the last few months they seem to have cut back on cheese and sauce so now I order extra of both). For the first time I stopped in to eat there at an off hour and ordered some food and sat down. While I was eating I noticed one of the cooks went in the bathroom and so quickly exited that it was very unlikely he washed his hands. Since I couldn't be sure, I convinced myself that he must have and continued eating. Then about 20 minutes later he went in again. This time I paid close attention to what he was doing( you can hear very well through the door when the restaurant is this quiet). About 30 seconds after he went in, I heard the toilet seat hit the porcelain, he flushed and he exited the bathroom. There is zero chance that he washed his hands. I was so disgusted and started to feel sick thinking about it. If the cooks don't even wash their hands after using the bathroom when they are out near the customers, I can't imagine what they would do when they are out of view and cooking. I will have to find a new place because I won't be able to eat that food again knowing this. read more

Great hidden jewel on Main Street in Ayer. As other people have commented, this is NOT the typical Greek style pizza. This is hand tossed thin crust pizza that stands up to the toppings. Although thin, it remains chewy and in tact to the last bite. Good salads, onion rings, etc. this is truly a great pizza joint with REAL pizza! read more

I've ordered out from this place a number of times when I've visited a friend in town. Generaly the pizza is good, not great but good. The last experiance was just wrong. We ordered a pizza for delivery, and the friend I visit orders their regularly because they deliver. The pizza didn't show up for an hour so we called and were told that it was on its way. On arival the pizza was cold so we called to ask them to correct the issue. The owner said he would not make us another pizza and hung up the phone. My friends, nor I will ever order from them again. That is not the way to run a buisness. When you screw up, you should fix the issue not be rude to a regular customer. read more

Let's start off with I used to work in the food business until health related issues ended that career for me. I'm also not one to complain about little errors in a take out order. As well this isnt the first time errors have been made with this place. On this particular evening, it had been a long day full of appointments and cranky children, decided to order take out for the family so myself and my spouse ordered subs. I specified NOT TOASTED several times as well as requested banana peppers. They said they had banana peppers which is great. I also repeated my order several times to make sure it was correct. The take out order was delivered quicker than expected which was delightful BUT my sandwich was toasted and no banana peppers. They cut up Peperoncinos, seeds and juice and threw that on the sub. I called which again I dont normally do but tonight I did. I repeated my order again and the woman said she would fix this. I said thank you and said that I appreciate it. Driver comes back to deliver what I would assume would be my correct order. Offered to give the wrong sandwich back but driver said dont worry about it. Good thing he didnt take the sandwich because when I opened the bag it was an empty sub roll... so i then had to reheat the chicken and assemble the sandwich. The breading on the chicken was now soggy and the chicken itself was drier than the Sahara desert. I understand that mistakes happen but in my personal experience of working at many pizzerias/sub shops if you get a call that the sandwich was made incorrectly, you remake the WHOLE sandwich to make it right for your customers. I ordered a cheese pizza, and asked if that was enough for delivery, being kind because they didn't mention it and I thought 1 pizza was not enough to meet their minimum. I was told I was $4 short so I asked for a ceasar salad with no chicken. He asked, "what kind of dressing do you want with that?" I said, "Um... ceaser!" I was told, "Your order will be there...soon." After 50 minutes I called to see where the order was (I had 4 hungry little girls waiting). They said my chicken ceaser and pizza would be there in less than 10 minutes. I clarified that I had asked for no chicken. They said ok. 20 minutes later I called again because it hadn't come. They said it was on the way. 10 minutes later the person I had just talked to on the phone delivered the pizza and salad. She said the delivery person got stuck. I opened the salad and it was a garden salad with dressing on the side, I was charged $8.75 for this salad, that I did not order. I looked on the menu and a garden salad is $4.75 for a small and $6.75 for a large. I paid $8.75. I called to request a refund and was told I got what I ordered because that is how they make their salads. But I was still charged for a chicken ceaser. They said they would give me a discount next time.... but why would I order from there again after waiting an hour and a half and not be given what I did order??? They hung up on me. I understand that Friday is a busy night and circumstances happen that may not be under their control, but the reason I ordered out was to make it easy. They should have given me the refund, or at least acknowledged their mistake. I will not order from them again, and you should not either! It makes me a little sad because I do support local businesses. But not when they act in this manner. read more
