I've been working in the area for the past 5 years and I've been fortunate enough to have eaten donuts from this location many times thanks to random coworkers always bringing in a box for any kind of celebration. It seems that everyone just knows that if you want donuts nearby, you go here and not Dunkin. I've been to the store a couple of times but there's nothing particular to write about. Just plain white interior and pretty old. A couple of tables I think, and a fridge. You're really just meant to pop in and out with a box of donuts. Parking is totally effortless. The lot outside is MASSIVE and shared with several other businesses. Honestly, I never see any cars in front of the other businesses either. Park anywhere you like. Hell, do a couple of laps before you consume all those calories! I won't wax poetic going through each donut because many other reviews have probably already sold you on the incredible quality being served here. But I want to give a shoutout that their Raspberry Fritters and Apple Fritters are world-class and everyone needs to try them. And they offer a true "baker's dozen": buy 12 get one free. I like that they're small - that is, appropriately-sized - too. No 800 calorie obscenities often encountered. There are a good variety of most of the standards, and apple and raspberry fritters which I really like. But get there early. If you come later in the day as I often too there are slim pickings. Boston Cream: Rounder and much thicker than most, it packs more filling than most, and has just enough extra golden crispness that it adds a beautiful contrast to the creamy interior. And because it's thicker, it's fluffier, bouncier, and more moist too. I don't know what happened to this place but the last two times I have been were absolutely horrible. The apple & Raspberry fritters taste old and dry - not at all is incredible as they used to be. The first time they were bad, I thought it was just a fluke and tried them again the other day. Truly terrible. The organization of there display case and the items on display are small pieces of donuts mixed in with the regular ones. A complete mess. Fantastic fresh doughnuts No maple-bacon shi-shi flavors, just amazing versions of traditional styles. One thing that i especially like is that there's aren't super sweet so you can really taste the beautiful bread. My favorites are coconut frosted and boston creme. They do have a shop specialty, but i don't know how to describe it - a cakey crumbly faintly apple- flavored one. It's great too, but not my personal favorite. read more

We came here because of the great reviews. As other reviewers said when the owner finds out you've never been there before he gives you so many samples you're not hungry anymore! Of course you've still got to buy something and you'll want to. I'm not a total donut fiend because the wheat gets to me but I still make exceptions on occasion and this was one of them! What happened in this place?? There's boxes of products and straws and packaging just strewn about throughout the restaurant. Everything is dirty inside. It looks like a tornado came through here. The donuts are just okay and not what I would call fresh. I don't understand how this place has such a high yelp score. I got a thai tea with boba and the boba was the strangest texture I've ever had. More rubbery than anything and the tea was sickly sweet even after pouring water in to dilute it. I am not ashamed to admit that I have eaten donuts across the nation. Some of my favorites that stand out are Krispy Kreme fresh made. There's also a great little joint in Tulsa, Oklahoma called Hurts donuts. They make some fantastic donuts. However, I have to say I have never been more impressed than when I went into Ruby's. The owner is super friendly and clearly loves what he does. If you are new to his shop, or pretend you are, he'll give you free samples until your diabetes hurts. But oh no, you don't mind, cuz each one of those samples is a little bite of heaven. I don't know how he does it. There's a certain crispiness and lightness and deliciousness to his donuts that I've never had before. These are truly the best donuts I have ever eaten. His prices are really reasonable. Where have you been my whole life? Some of the best donuts I've had in a very long time. That yeast-raised glazed donut? So light and clean tasting. That apple fritter? Light crunch on the outside, tender and apply/cinnamon-y inside. Not too much glaze. Even if they are using the exact same things as the other guys, they have found the magic handling. Seriously, I've started to really, really dislike donuts because all I could get was Dunkin' Donuts, honeydew, or Dippin' Donuts (this last one being only a last resort). The crap is not donuts if you like donuts. Ruby is the real deal. It is certainly an unassuming shop in an unassuming and dying strip mall in a neglected corner of Ayer that clearly used to support Fort Devens. But don't let that fool you. The product is crazy-good. Bonus points for the service being quick and friendly. Seriously, check these guys out. read more

Who knew you could find such amazing donuts in the middle of Ayer?! We walked in morning hoping to get the best selection of donuts before they would sell out. They don't have any labels on their donuts, so we asked the guy behind the counter to tell us what they were. Since it was our first time there, he gave us a few samples to try and we let him pick out a dozen of the best flavors. These donuts are spectacular! They have a super crunchy texture on the outside with a soft inside that isn't too oily from frying. A couple of the donuts did get squished by the others while in the box, but they were just as delicious. The fritters are some of their best sellers and I would recommend trying them out. While visiting friends in Groton, MA, I was introduced to Ruby Donut in nearby Ayer and am I am so happy I was! The shop is a tiny one man (and a nephew) restaurant in a strip mall with hands down the best donuts in MA and possibly even better than Allie's Donuts in RI! Chan, the owner, is friendly and personable. There are a few seats but most customers get their orders to go. They have a parking lot which is very convenient if you are in a hurry. Prices are very reasonable, so you can pick up a few dozen donut holes for your co-workers or son/daughter's youth sports team and a few bear claws and twists for your family for less than half of what the chains charge for ones with much less flavor! I heard they are moving 20 minutes away at the end of the year which is going to be a HUGE loss for Ayer and the surrounding communities, so till then, stock up! GOOD NEWS...So many customers asked him not to move, Chan has decided to stay in Ayer! read more

Was looking to grab something quick in the area since this was probably the only place opened at 5am in the morning. I was with a coworker and we were both greeted by this very polite man. He then asked us if this was our first time here and indeed we said yes. He proceeded to give us samples of some the popular items on the menu and I was in awe! We were both so overwhelmed by the generosity of the employee because he kept on giving us samples to try, but also excited at the same time because not only were they delicious, but it was fresh out of the oven! I think we eventually got full off the samples alone lol. At first, I came here to get two items on the menu which was the kolache and a Thai iced tea but ended up with more: half a dozen donuts, a few kolaches, a bagel sandwich, and a free Thai iced tea by the employee. Overall, this has to be one of my favorite donut places now. Not only was the customer service outstanding, but the donuts weren't too sweet or heavy. It tasted just right.
