The restaurant from the lower parking lot

If I were rating this place strictly on food, I would only give it two stars. However, the ambience, location, and friendly staff raise it up a notch. The outside area by the rock walls was very pretty and the entire setting was nice. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. This is especially true since we were a large party. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the rest of the place. I ordered stuffed pork loin. The food was delivered fast. Probably too fast. I don't know how they could have prepared fresh food for so many in such short time. To me that indicates a lot of microwave use, but I could be wrong. My dinner came with a few thin slices of pork loin, green beans, garlic mashed potatoes with gravy and a biscuit. No salad. The portion size was ample. It was enough to fill me up, but no so much that I had to take home leftovers. I found the pork to be very dry and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were unremarkable and had very little garlic flavor. The biscuit was nothing to brag about. The one bright spot was the green beans. Some people thought they were overcooked, but I enjoyed them. My wife order Tilapia. They were very accommodating and let her substitute garlic mashed potatoes for the rice. She agrees with my comments on the beans and potatoes. She describes the tilapia as limp, slightly watery (although supposedly baked), barely warm, had a nice spice to it, but the fish had a rather fishy taste. Tilapia is supposed to be mild. It gave her the impression of being prepared earlier and had been sitting on a steam table for awhile. Definitely not cooked in the short period between our order and the time it was served. The other reviewers really liked the food. Maybe we went on the cooks night off, or maybe because we had a large group, they prepared a lot of food in advance. I may give it a try sometime when I'm in the area without being with a large group and then maybe I will have the experience of the other reviewers.

Went to The Cottage for dinner last night. Easy to find just outside of Hermann, MO. Use other yelper's directions not google maps. Lovely and relaxed experience. I got the stuffed pork loin, garlic smashed potatoes and sauted spinach. Partner got the fried chicken. I have to say that it was by far the best meal I have had in a while and certainly the best in Hermann! Insider info: new location after the first of the year will be in the old Jillsies location in downtown Hermann.

    Chicken art!! Adore this.

Inside a whimsical and quaint little house set up on a hill in the woods is a darling little restaurant that cooks up some delicious meals and ambrosial desserts. The Cottage oozes charm in ambiance, decor and service with a discriminating attention to detail. We were seated at an attractive table in a corner set with a mint green table cloth with a small candle burning in the middle in what was probably the living room of this former dwelling. You will also find artwork from a few different artists hanging on the walls showcasing their talent. Foods all made from scratch and most locally grown & sourced, the menu boasts a variety of salads, soups, comfort food dishes, pastas, some German entrees along with a great variety of Missouri wines. I had the Hunters Salad, shrimp on Jalapeño Cheddar Grits and the bread pudding for dessert. I would recommend all of these items as they were absolutely fabulous. My husband had the Salted Caramel Pie for dessert which I tasted. Home run! If you are in the Hermann area I highly recommend this place. LOVE LOVE LOVE The Cottage! Cute hide-away cozy restaurant. Love the quietness and the interiors. This place brings a relaxing atmosphere. Great service and a delicious light lunch. Love their bread pudding made of donuts.

Very happy with our recent experience here. Have lived in the area since 2010 but just got around to giving this place a try. I'm glad we did and I will be back. They use fresh ingredients and it shows. Staff is friendly and efficient.

Check in was easy and the view on the hill would be nice if not rainy and can't imagine what a great sunny day would be like (probably very pretty!). They do have a 3 mile walking trail but if you try it you need to grab the map first or you'll think you're heading to a private road. We turned back without a map thinking we went the wrong way - rookie mistake but wish we would have been told to grab a map prior to heading out. Or be handed one as newbies... The owner I believe lives in the facility as well, and it was Easter weekend. He was talkative first night upon check in and did stop by outside to chat. The waterfall was not working and he said maybe he'd get it working by the time we left. Not a big deal, but never did turn on. It was odd that his family lived there or was visiting for Easter so we did feel a little like intruders over the weekend. Room: was freezing cold, and first night the heat was not working well. We did have a fireplace in the room but the unit to use for heat was not working no matter what we tried even with staff assistance. The bathroom was freezing and we had to use a space heater to try to warm it. We did complain the second night and nothing was fixed as owner was having Easter dinner upstairs with his family. Hot Tub: clean, small and perfect for 2 people. Made the trip. Didn't use the small table fire pit. They don't tell you that they drop off deserts at night and the next morning we woke up with melted ice cream outside the room. Communication breakdown. Coffee was folders, nothing great but did have a selection of offerings for breakfast time. Staff workers were amazing - kind and super friendly given that it was Easter weekend. You can tell they do try to give you the best experience. The staff hired here were amazing and friendly. Games are available for the rainy days. TV has most steaming services, rooms a tad older look. Somethings not functioning - like the sound machine, TV being finicky, and heat in room. We probably will not choose this room. Would rather stay at the rooms that are on the river and try that route next time!

The cottage-they've redone a detached garage (or carriage house) so it's like stepping into a 1700's English cottage. We were there on two cold, rainy days, and the place wrapped us in warmth and comfort-and romance! It's furnished with quilts, antiques and art from Hermann, and the bathroom has a jacuzzi for 2. Words don't do it justice, see the website! The hosts-you get their full attention, because you're their only guests. Jack and Chris are friendly and gracious, but know when to give you your space. Breakfast is pretty much on your schedule-Chris will ask you when you want her to have it ready in the morning. Sometime during the day she'll slip in and restock towels and put dessert in the fridge, which leads me to... The food-OMG, you won't need lunch after eating a Cady breakfast! The first morning was a baked apple in homemade fruit liqueur, eggs Benedict, potato pancake, and bacon; the next morning, poached pears, whole wheat pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sausage. Most of it is locally produced. Absolutely delicious, and served in their dining room that's also furnished in Colonial-period decor. And wherever you get dinner, skip dessert, because it's better back at the cottage-we had chocolate torte and a peanut butter pie that was so good I almost wanted to roll in it! A word of warning, if you will-they have wi-fi if you bring a laptop, and a CD player stocked with classical and American Standards, but no TV-they expect that you're there to enjoy each other. And in these surroundings, that's not a problem. A charming place, will definitely return!

This is by FAR the best B&B we've ever experienced, because the Captain Wohlt Inn offers much, much more than just "bed" and "breakfast," even though the beds are high quality and the breakfast is amazing! (Forget your continental breakfast -- at the Captain Wohlt, a giant, chef-prepared breakfast arrives each morning, hot and fragrant!) The properties and the rooms are beautiful and modern, even though you'll be staying in houses that are well over 100 years old. The owner thought of EVERYTHING you can possibly need. Going to the wineries? Corkscrew in your room. Looks like rain? Large umbrellas are there too. Forgot your hair dryer? No worries. There's one in your spa bathroom. All the amenities of a luxury hotel without the upcharges. You can have as much or as little of the Captain Wohlt experience as you want. If the Hermann night life isn't for you, there's a beautiful wine garden right on the Captain Wohlt property where you can enjoy live music on the weekends and special treats from Brant the owner. (We had s'mores, and live music from Barak Hill, who also brought along some of his beautiful art pottery to share with guests!) If it gets chilly in the evening, Brant (who literally seems to work 24/7) will cover you in a cozy blanket. The Captain Wohlt Inn has to be the best value in Hermann (maybe in all of Missouri, for that matter). The breakfast alone is worth the price of admission -- not sure how Brant can provide so much quality for so little money, but he's doing everything right. I would give ten stars if I could. Oh, and you know those people who go around to hotels with their little black lights, looking for stains and other suspicious anomalies? I'm that person. Nothing at all to see at the Captain Wohlt. While the suite itself was visually beautiful, the décor was charming, and the bathroom with its clawfoot tub was absolutely lovely, almost everything else about our stay was unfortunately disappointing. The biggest issue was the lack of comfort and quiet. The bed was very uncomfortable, making it difficult to get a good night's sleep. On top of that, the building is extremely loud. You can hear every sound from the other suites, including when guests use the restroom. Both nights, we were woken up by people coming in late, loud, and clearly intoxicated. On the second night, we had the added "bonus" of listening to a woman vomiting until around 4 a.m. while her husband yelled at her. None of this was the Inn's fault directly, but the lack of sound insulation made it impossible to rest. The amenities added to the frustration. Neither the WiFi nor the TV worked at any point during our stay. We reported this and were told staff were working on it, but nothing was ever fixed and no apology, discount, or accommodation was offered, despite the room costing over $500 for two nights. Finally, the complimentary breakfast was extremely underwhelming. The food was bland and forgettable, and the coffee was honestly terrible. Given the price point and reputation of Inn at Hermannoff, we expected something far better. Overall, this stay was a major disappointment. There are far better options in Hermann, and we would strongly recommend staying at Hermann Crown instead. Our experience there has consistently been much more comfortable, quiet, and enjoyable.

There were CDs and a player and also games, which we didn't use. The bathroom was large, and the shower turned out to have great pressure, which I love. My only complaint would be the scratchy towels. Everything else in the room was top notch, but the towels truly weren't. Another plus would have been to have somewhere to hang clothes. We truly could hear the water pipes from the rooms above us, which wasn't my favorite thing either. Upstairs rooms are probably more quiet.
