When we had a series of raccoon attacks last year that decimated my little backyard chicken flock, I decided that it was time evict that furry little bastard once and for all. Having seen some raccoon fights and hearing the screaming that woke up half the houses on our block, I was really reluctant to handle this job myself, as these things can be large and quite vicious. Jose came out promptly and did a thorough assessment of the situation. He's extremely friendly, professional and knowledgeable. He set up and baited some humane traps and warned us what to expect (we ended up catching both our cats twice each.) After catching and relocating 2 possums, we finally caught our chicken murderer. VENGEANCE IS MINE. I briefly considered making a hat out of him, but being a hippie animal lover, we opted to have him relocated as well. I should mention this whole time, Jose was driving out from Sylmar to West LA to rebait the traps himself at no additional cost, before we assured him that we could do that ourselves and save him the trip. After the pest situation was addressed, Jose secured the property, replacing loose or damaged grates so new pests couldn't move under the house and sprinkled cougar urine (weird, but it seems to work) around the perimeter to scare off any other predators. I'm posting an updated review for The Critter Trapper, because he never ceases to amaze us. We had a huge problem underneath our house. A possum had gotten trapped, perished, and was decaying. To be quite graphic, the smell had permeated our entire house, and we were barely able to sleep that night. We called Jose in the morning, hoping to get his soonest appointment opening. He was booked, very busy, but he made time to come to our house that very day and take care of the problem. The problem was MUCH worse than we had expected. The possum had made a huge nest, lodging debris up into the wall, and it was a huge undertaking. I was a fan for a few years. When I recommended him to others, I always said that he's like the Gopher Whisperer... he doesn't always return calls, your not sure when he's been to your house and he doesn't charge you if he doesn't feel he's helped you with you problem. Its all kind of mysterious and an unusual way to operate... as long as your critter problem is fixed. However, when you have two or three houses that all need critter attention and you've left multiple messages and also gotten "mailbox full" messages, all you want to know is... Is the person that has been to both these houses in the past and that you have a history with, going to eventually return your call and take care of things or do I need to start investing time researching a new business and starting a new relationship? I mean, how can you just be totally unresponsive to an established client? My suggestion is that he charge everyone an extra $15 so that he can hire someone to return calls, make appointments and avoid having customers in the dark. read more

Working with Jose was a real pleasure--he is a complete professional and thoroughly explains the process and realities of trapping wild animals. In doing so, I had no surprises and knew exactly what was going to happen once the animals were trapped. He is completely honest and trustworthy. I had a raccoon that was in the process of destroying new sod that I had laid in my back yard--I would wake up every morning to see that the raccoon had peeled away all the new grass in order to feed on the worms living below. Knowing that the end result would be a destroyed lawn and wasted money, I looked on Yelp and saw that the Critter Trapper had a lot of great reviews. He came to my home the same day, set up a few traps and caught the offender that night. Problem solved--I am very pleased! Some things you need to know before using his services: 1. By law, he must euthanize captured animals--you have to be OK with this fact. 2. Set up is $150 and you will be charged $95 for each captured animal. He will not charge you anything if he fails to capture the problem animal(s). In the end, I am extremely pleased that I used his services--it was a relatively easy way to deal with a problem that I have had for a while now. Jose at Critter Trapper is very knowledgeable and cares about his work. I had a disreputable company called American Pest Control (APC) come out Fri for supposed rats in attic. Instead it was a mother raccoon w/ 6 babies. Kevin @ APC not qualified pest control. He misidentified the raccoons as skunks and tried shouting to chase them away, assured me they all ran out vent and sealed it. He sealed the babies inside, mom came that nite and tore roof apart to get back in. I was in shock. I called APC owner to send them back out to get babies out, but never called back until Mon am and denied any wrongdoing and refused to refund my money or pay for roof damage. Wished I had yelped them first to find out how bad they are. I later researched and found other pest control companies don't even deal with live wild animals unless certified. Certified ones do live animal trapping. Obviously APC is neither qualified or certified, even though their ad claims 'fully certified and insured' Sat Nite 1 AM I went up attic to get babies out, but they were in an inaccesible crawl space, I then crawled onto roof and shooed mom away from vent for 2 hrs, so I could open it up so she could get to crying babies. Warning: protective mom raccoons are fierce, she growled like a dog and kept at me. I googled: found Critter Trapper website now that mom reunited w/ babies & living in attic. Jose answered right away on Sunday morning, was so empathetic, spoke calmly and said not to freak out. He spoke w/ me on phone lengthy time and could tell he really cared about what happened to me. He has much experience w/ raccoon behavior and talked me through the process. Even though he calmed me down I felt desperate. I begged him to come out right away. He quoted me his price, but Instead of jumping at the chance of making an easy buck, he explained, I already harassed mother, she feels babies not safe and will move them. He advised me be patient, give mom chance to feel safe enough to remove babies. He is really knowledgeable, he said I did wrong by battling her on roof, she might not feel safe moving babies yet, because I had posed a threat. He said give it a day, just go to work on Monday and assess situation when I get home. She may have moved them. I came home 4 pm and all is quiet. I don't hear the babies. He was right. Mom must have taken them away. Jose didn't do any actual work for me by trapping my raccoon, but his insight, experience and advice were invaluable. He's not just in it for the money, or he would had come right over to charge me for unnecessary traps and fees. He really wants to help people and has compassion for the animals. Being a single mother, living with a small child, 2 cats and a dog, I am certainly aware how many lives depend on me. For years, off and on, we have been harassed by racoons. One of my cats had surgeries to upwards of $600, because of raccoon attacks. Jose is one of the most professional and friendly people I have met. I had some squirrels trapped in the chimney and called animal control and the humane society. They didn't provide this service to remove but did refer me to Jose. I called orkin and they wanted $450 for laying traps. When I called Jose he gave me advice to check the chimney and said he didn't want to waste my money in case they weren't really trapped. He came and tried for a while to remove the squirrels. They were actually a family. He didn't charge me until the job was finished and since he wasn't able to finish on day one and there was no urgent threat he came back the next day. I called The Critter Trapper earlier this year when I had a feral cat and her three kittens move into my yard. I would have left them alone but the mother attacked and terrorized my 15 year old blind, deaf dog, so the cats had to go. There was a family of raccoons that went onto my roof to do their business at night. They also ran around above my daughters' bedrooms and kept them up. After 2 roofers inspecting my roof for a leak commented about the "critter droppings," I decided to deal with the raccoons. After researching different companies, I called Jose and he came out to the property the next morning to do an evaluation. I suspected that the raccoons accessed my roof through a large tree on the side of my house and Jose confirmed it. I thought the solution would be to chop down the tree or to trap the raccoons. Instead, Jose proposed cutting the lower tree branches and wrapping the trunk so the raccoons couldn't climb up to the roof. He also removed the droppings and disinfected the areas on the roof. He even called me the next day to follow up. Jose's knowledge and expertise and customer service was excellent. His stellar reviews are well deserved. Within a few days, my son noticed scratch marks on the metal wrap on the tree trunk but my daughters did not hear raccoons on the roof. They deserve more than 5 stars, they are beyond amazing, but since that's my maximum limit I will have to settle for that. We had been having problems with pigeons for a while now, we had multiple companies come and check it out but none of them offered a permanent solution with a reasonable price, they all involved us having to pay more money for every visit that we needed later on. We have a skunk living in my mom's compost bin in our backyard and it sprays during the night near my room, which is next to a fruit tree.
