Truly a testament to the long-lasting connections I made here. PSCS provided me with the unique opportunity to lean away from perfectionism, and lean into the hard, but rewarding, process of collaboration and community care. It was also a place for me to challenge ideas and ideals that I might not otherwise have confronted until adulthood: I found space to explore my own identities, to have discussions about race and class, and to ask important questions about my place and role in the world. Most importantly, PSCS helped me unearth a deep joy that is so easy to lose hold of during those tumultuous teen years. And I learned how to continue to spark that joy, far beyond my time at the school. If everyone could experience a taste of the warmth, tenacity, creativity and joy that PSCS brings, I am confident that we would be better listeners; better community members; and would be more grounded in our own identities. I had the pleasure of spending two days in Jackie's Speed Reading workshop recently. At the…read morebeginning of the workshop, I tested 200 words per minute with 60 percent retention. At the end, I was reading 800 words per minute with the same retention rate. I would have been delighted had I only doubled my reading speed, but quadrupling it? I'm thrilled. Jackie was also a pleasure to work with, a patient coach who makes learning enjoyable and brings his rich work experience - which includes a stint working at the Jet Propulsion Lab - to teaching. Taking this workshop does present me with one problem: devouring books at four times normal speed gives me an unfair advantage over my competition. And since I'm all about collaboration over competition, my only recourse is to spread the word - take this course if you want to keep up!

I got through 340 pages and took notes. I'm not saying I got as much out of the book as I would have had I spent several days reading the book, but I did get a lot out of it; way more than I would have ever expected. And that was only a few hours after learning a brand new skill. It's truly a new paradigm for approaching reading. I can only imagine after a couple of months of practicing this new skill and becoming more proficient with it how much faster and better I'll be at reading. Knowledge is power and speed-reading gives you the ability to acquire much more knowledge. It's like a super-power. Dr Giuliano himself is awesome. He's kind, caring, and very open-minded. It felt really good to be around him. So, this class was one of the best values I've come across in my life. And no, no one paid me or encouraged me to write this review. The kids who were the tutors were goofing around instead of helping her. It's great that they are trying to teach the teens responsibility by having them tutor, but they need supervision. We talked to them several times about this and each time they promised to fix it, with no improvement. In short the tutors are just high schoolers, and without supervision they are just babysitters. My daughter was so excited to get her grades up, and was crushed that they let her down.
