Tl;dr: A coffee shop that's more than just a cup, but offering community. Food: This coffee shop has your standard coffee offerings, but where they set themselves apart are their signature drinks. I tried The Kindred (named after Octavia Butler's now classic novel) which is a toasted honey latte. This had a wonderful blend of coffee and the sweet honey syrup. I also tried the Settlement latte which is named after the African American community in this part of Prince William County. If you want to grab something to eat, they also have breakfast and lunch food options as well. Vibes: [[HIGHLIGHT]]One of the best parts of this coffee shop! Perhaps the friendliest coffee shop I have ever been to. The owner and her staff were nothing short of friendly and gracious. I ordered a delicious avocado toast and a delectable iced matcha latte. They listen and are experts in making all sorts of coffee drinks. I LOVE their Lattes! They also have a chalkboard that lists some delicious sandwich options. I love this coffee shop! The people who work there, which I suspect are often the owners, are lovely and eager to make your order perfect. The breakfast sandwiches and muffins I've had there are always excellent and I usually get one of their seasonal drinks that are named after influential people like Langston Hughes or Tony Morrison. My fiancé and I stopped by this coffee shop after our first dance class at Arthur Murray next-door. The location itself is open and well maintained. I loved the seasonal offerings for Black History Month as the February coffee options were still up. One latte called the Maya Angelo caught my eye. I loved the simple, thoughtful decorations. The location has plenty of pictures of noteworthy, historical figures and beautiful mirrors. We opted for a dirty, chai iced. I am particular about my dirty chai, and I specifically asked if they use pre-prepared chai mix like teavana or a powder. I was very impressed when the lady behind the bar mentioned that she makes the chai concentrate herself with vanilla bean and spices they were incredibly accommodating as I also do half oat milk and half almond milk to my coffees to have the perfect blend of thick and flavorful (without the extra cholesterol). The coffees were absolutely delicious. Certainly worth the price point and handcrafted. The only note I could make was that there was a lot of ice used and I wanted more beverage. I stumbled across The Culture Cup yesterday - but they weren't open. So I drove by this morning - they were open - turns out TODAY (Sept. 25, 2023) is their first day open! It's in the space previously occupied by a small organic cupcake shop that went out of business. It's located in the retail complex called "The Marketplace at Madison Crescent" at the intersection of U.S. 15 & U.S. 29 in Gainesville, VA. I walked in this morning, was immediately greeted by the owner Nikki. I scanned the menu board and ordered a cold brew (they currently only offer one size). The cold brew was excellent! Strong and delicious! I suggested that down the road they offer some larger cup sizes. They offer some limited sandwich and baked good selections - have not tried any of those out yet. I ordered a drink marked on their specials board "The Balwin" which was a salted mocha, tasted deep like an expresso, personally I prefer a sweeter taste but it was good. Just stumbled on this little gem this morning. the interior is warm and inviting, with varied seating options. tastefully decorated with an elevated yet homely feel. This is such a lovely cafe. The coffee we had was wonderful and the coffee cake were delicious. However, the breakfast sandwiches were not that great, I think the egg may have been microwaved. The service was wonderful, I cannot stress how cozy this cafe was. They had black history in pictures everywhere and I loved looking at the pictures in the walls. New amazing locally-owned coffee shop that celebrates Black / African American culture I went to The Culture Cup, a coffee shop and meeting space, for the first time today in Gainesville. It opened about a month ago. Every inch of this place exudes the love and care of the owners - it is abundantly clear that creating this was a labor of love. The theme, design, aesthetics, even menu are all centered around celebrating Black / African American culture, including the local history. There are books about history and culture, intentional artwork choices, and a wall of photographs of famous figures drinking coffee. There are signature coffee drinks inspired by history, including the Settlement Latte with a brown sugar and sage syrup. I got a green tea (I don't drink coffee) and avocado toast. The tea is loose leaf and from a local supplier, and it has really nice floral notes to it. The toast has multigrain bread and was topped with sliced cherry tomatoes, arugula, and dressing - maybe balsamic vinegar. It was delicious. Total it was just over $10. There are small cafe tables as well as larger chairs and a couch for more comfortable seating. It is designed as a space to host community events after hours. I think there are starting a kids story hour on Friday mornings. They are on Instagram under theculturecupva and I would check there to make sure they are open - since they just opened, they are having to close a few days here and there but post about it on Instagram ahead of time.
