We were here almost every night during our stay in Custer. The first evening we ordered our drinks and food at the bar and headed outside to enjoy the slight drizzle. The service is all order at the bar and then they'll bring the food to you from the disconnected kitchen. I ordered the Orange Chicken Bowl and my husband got their Chipped Beef Special. It was out to our table in about 10 minutes, and everything was fresh and piping hot! The orange chicken could've been mistaken for the packages they sell at Trader Joe's or Costco (and I mean that in the BEST sense - I LOVE those brands of orange chicken!), but the broccoli was obviously fresh and still had a nice crisp to it while being just the right amount of tender. The serving sizes are huge and we weren't able to finish both meals. There are pool tables inside that are extraordinarily expensive, so we only played about two games. There was extremely loud live music we weren't expecting the second night, so we sat outside on the patio to try and get a way from the volume, but we still returned for the ambience and the quick service. read more

Lots of local beer selections but i got a topo Chico hehe Lamb gyro was 8/10, needs a bit more lamb and lettuce but the tzatziki was delicious My mom got roast beef sandwich with red wine jus and she said it was 7/10, just wasn't accustomed to the type of smoked beef. Driving home from Rapid and wanted to extend vacation by one day. Saw they had live music and decided on Custer. The venue is great. Drinks reasonably priced and the food we had was good. Service was excellent and friendly. The band was epic and easily one of the best we have heard in a long time. A Brothers Fountain. Like that there is not a cover charge, but a suggested donation. Vince, the Head Chef, totally took care of us! We had seen him in town the night before, and he told us to come in to the Beacon and ask for him. He made us two "Vince Specials" and they were insanely good! We left there so full and happy. This place might as well be the Custer, SD visitor center. We were in town (or just outside of it) for three nights and we stopped by every night for food, live music, and karaoke. I am not exaggerating when I say this is the only MUST during our entire trip in South Dakota. We did a lot: Mount Rushmore, ATVing, hiking, Deadwood, but The Beacon is what I find myself thinking about today at work. The food was really good and was served from the side building after ordering from the bar. The interior venue space is large and well-designed. They have tables near the bar with pool tables and a few high-tops but the stage is surrounded by couches. I absolutely LOVED this. Coffeehouse vibes but with a prairie spin. I get the feeling that this place functions as kind of a town hall. I feel like we met a good cross-section of the town while we were there. I cannot speak highly enough of those we met here. It was truly the perfect welcome to the Black Hills. My only regret about my time in Custer is that we did not spend more time here. The bar staff was fantastic, the food was great, and the locals were friendly. The Beacon has a good mix of locals and tourists, especially in the later hours. DO NOT MISS this place. I am not sure if I will ever be back to Custer, but if I do, I hope I can stop by and have a drink. Thanks for the memories! read more

Stayed in Custer and this was recommended by our front desk clerk. Nice, roomy, had a stage where it was open mike night for local musicians. Sign as we entered instructed us to take menus, find a seat, and order at the bar. Food arrived shortly. My friend and I both had the Dakota dip, lots of roast beef piled on a thick brioche bun with au jus, comes with one side. We both had fries and my friend also got a side salad and fried beets Ala carte. When food arrived my friend didn't have her fries but they did bring them. We never had service aftermath, no one checked to see if we needed anything or more to drink. Guess you have to go to the bar for that also. Other than that the food was super good, the roast beef was tender, juicy and flavorful. My friend loved her salad, and the fries were crispy and hot. Would recommend if in Custer. read more

A family-run business in a converted warehouse, the Beacon brings together a wonderful community with outstanding concerts, delicious food and a comprehensive local craft beer tap list. The food menu is always evolving and I can never get enough of the Dakota Dip sandwich, paired up with a Bruce Banner APA. It's always fun to grab a beer there--even on non-concert days--hang with friends, toss some corn hole or shoot pool. My companions got a meal with porchop (I didn't try this item), a salmon salad (I thought it was good), and a pulled pork sandwich (which was delicious). We visited the Custer Beacon and Cantina on a cold Friday night. There was great live music and the food was delicious. The staff made sure the outside fire pits were stoked up so we could stay warm and also enjoy their outside patio. Everything was very clean, including the unisex bathroom. The fries were very underwhelming. Very soggy and dark brown as if the oil was old. Also, I would not recommend The Dakota dip-the jus was so salty that you can't taste the bison. On the evening we went they were having a Ladies Night event. The atmosphere was pleasant and the place was inviting. The menu was limited but looked good. I ordered the Ultimate BLT and the veggie stew. The veggie soup was not what I expected. It tasted like a spicy spaghetti sauce with raw carrots. I was not a fan of the BLT either. The beef bacon had a good flavor but the texture reminded me of beef jerky. Overall I was disappointed with my meal. read more

We are from SoCal/San Diego area and have frequented many of the new hipster food breweries and this place beats them all. Although they are not a brewery, they serve many outstanding local brews. We were so impressed w/ chef Vince's Smokey stir-fry w/chicken and burger bomb we came back the next day for the Cubano w/ sweet potato salad and the bison dip. We stopped here for lunch after a bike ride on the Mickelson trail. I highly recommend it! Food was beyond amazing and staff was so friendly. We dined outside and enjoyed the sunshine. Two of us had the pulled pork sandwiches....and even they they were large, we couldn't stop eating and almost finished the whole thing. One had the burger and loved it as well. The menu is diverse with a variety of bowls, sandwiches and burgers. I had a cold Thai peanut noodle bowl with chicken which was great. Others had the stir fry veggie bowl, smoked pork Cubano and a burger. They also have a kids menu and my son will say they are the best chicken fingers he's ever had.
