Stopped on our long day of driving through Custer state park and wildlife loop for a bite of lunch. There were no outside tables left but the staff were super helpful to get us one as quickly as possible. It was 80° out and no one was sitting inside. They were so friendly and accommodating, and we didn't even ask. We ordered the blackened chicken Ceaser wrap, I had potato salad and my guy had smoked beans. Food came out really quick and was super tasty. It was a big wrap and we couldn't eat them all. We could have ordered one and shared it. View was beautiful. It was peaceful and calming. We really enjoyed the dining experience. Stop in if you're driving through. You won't regret it. read more

Stopped by for lunch on a cold dreary day after driving up from Wind Cave. Our server was Kemar and he was very nice and an excellent server. He said to sit anywhere so we grabbed a table by the fireplace. nice and warm. We started with a couple of local lagers. I got the coconut curry shrimp small plate with a tasty slaw. Stopped in for lunch after the bison drive loop and Needles Parkway. Both worth seeing. Sat outside on the deck, beautiful day. Wifey went with the burger and coleslaw. Nothing special to report. I went with the pot roast entree. Three nice slabs of roasted beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, and huge helping of broccoli. Meal was very hearty with inviting presentation. We stopped here for dinner after a fun day at Custer State Park! I had the chicken fried steak and it was fantastic! The fresh veggies that came with it were delicious as well, and usually i'm not a big veggie guy. Lily got the chicken tenders with fries and they were perfect. We rented Cabin No 1, supposedly sleeping 5, May 2024. Luckily, it was just my husband and me as there would have been no room for another person. The main bed is pushed up against a wall and slopes in the middle. I was against the wall and felt claustrophobic. The kitchen is barely equipped. The bathtub has a big stain. All in all, it was a total rip off at 300 per night for such rustic accomodations. I assume you can do way better elsewhere!! read more

Meh. For $200 a night, I expected better. We arrived at 4 after driving all day and was told our cabin wasn't ready because of "Covid issues". Check in was supposed to be at 3 but whatever. We went and got dinner and came back about 90 minutes later and got our keys. Opened the door to find a teeny tiny cabin. Cute but definitely small for 4 people. The cabin had not been vacuumed because there were potato chip crumbs everywhere. No towels. I called down and was told all the towels were in the washing machine and someone would bring them later. They did come by about two hours later but only brought two towels. No washcloth, floor mat.... not the best situation for 4 people. The room had bugs. I get it that it's in a National park and I'm pretty forgiving. Lots of moths. Okay fine. But also flies, earwigs and a bunch of weird worms The general store is pretty much just an overpriced gift shop. The ladies working aren't super friendly but it is what it is. We ordered lunch from there (fried chicken to go) and it was such a debacle that we got the whole order for free (raw cookies, didn't have the two side dishes we ordered, was ready a half hour after it should have been although all the employees were standing Around doing nothing). The beach gets crowded real fast. It's tiny. No social distancing at all. Do not rent this cabin based on the beach unless you are totally comfortable being on top of other people you've never met who don't care about masks or 6 feet distance. At checkout, they were supposed to be open at 8 and didn't open til almost 830 which is annoying when you have other places to be. Overall, I wish we would have stayed in a hotel in town and just driven into the park each day. Would have been cheaper and probably a lot less bugs. read more

My husband and I took a trip through South Dakota's Custer State Park. After a long day and only the snacks we packed in the car, we happened to find this amazing restaurant and gift shop. What an amazing view! The restaurant has a beautiful dining area with floor to ceiling windows or an outdoor patio area that overlooks the lake and rock terrain. As Californians not used to bugs, we chose to sit inside. The restaurant has a great menu with choice ingredients. The prices are very reasonable and affordable. A five star menu with two star prices. The staff was also on point and provided excellent service. After our meal, we visited the large gift shop and stocked up on souvenirs. The shop is clean and has a large variety of gifts from magnets to clothing and kids souvenirs to local art finds. I believe the shop also sold bait and other camping necessities. This lodge around a bend in the road was a great surprise for hungry travelers wanting something more than a greasy burger and fries. read more

Seating for 5 was accomplished within 5 minutes, that's the good from there it was all down hill and the slope downward was a steep one. We sat at the table for 25 minutes before a server came to the table and it would have been longer if the maitre d hadn't been rousted. Finally our server came and took a drink order of 2 sodas and 3 waters another 10 minute wait before our drinks arrived. The waitress took our food order and another 23 minute wait for the food to arrive and the food wasn't worth the wait. There wasn't a dish on the table that wasn't deficient in some way they were all equally horrible. After another 15 minutes we finally got our checks. We spent over 2 hours in all at the table. It's one of the worst dining experiences I've had ever. Maybe we caught them at a bad time but this experience was so bad I wouldn't chance a 2 nd visit, no second chance here. read more

FINALLY a decent selection of food in the middle of nowhere! Don't get me wrong, this place is by no means fancy, but it was certainly better than a lot of what is available to eat in the other national and state parks in the area. Their seasoned fried potato wedges were delicious, but you can't really mess that up. My black bean burger was good and -- shockingly! -- the bun was decent! I had the burger with a side salad, which was not too bad since it actually had tomatoes, cucumber, and carrots in addition to lettuce. The husband had a bison burger with no complaints. The children had mac and cheese and a mini hamburger, respectively, and both devoured them. THERE IS NO BIGGER ENDORSEMENT THAN MY CHILDREN EATING ALL OF YOUR FOOD. On the other hand, they have terrible taste, so... :::shrugs::: While nothing was mind-blowing per se, what we did eat was executed well, and the overall selection was very, very expansive, including fried chicken, various sandwiches, salads, pizzas, etc. For this, and their clean, modern facility with an excellent view, I upped them to 4 stars. read more

I loved this place! We stopped in randomly while out riding and at first glance I thought it was cafeteria food, we were hungry so we stayed. First impression of the staff was they were very friendly and attentive to our needs. They sat us quickly on the outdoor patio overlooking the lake. We had a beautiful view. We ordered and the food was quite good. We all had different burgers and everyone enjoyed their entree. I can't say anything was bad. We enjoyed our visit!! read more

The manager at the restaurant was extremely rude. We waited 45 minutes for our food. And once our food arrived we waited another ten minutes for condiments. When we asked for them the manager came over and lectured us for being rude to her staff. We were not rude, we waited a long time without communication from the staff. I wish I had read the YELP reviews before I booked and stayed at Legion Lake Lodge. My experiences were very similar. Very unfriendly and disgruntled staff. If you ask for anything you get an earful on how understaffed they are and then have to wait a very long time for anything. When we arrived, our room was not available so we thought let's get a beer and sit outside. We waited almost 15 min. for someone to get us a beer and there were no smiles from anyone there. Then we waited until after the check in time for our room only to find out that the water heater burst in our room. It had been replaced but the cheap carpeting was wet. Very small quarters in the sleeping cabin and yes, bugs. For us, mostly at night with the large brown moths. It got to be so bad that we left one day earlier than planned. We were also told that the bathroom had been remodeled in 2018. Perhaps the vanity but not the toilet or shower / bath areas. Then we received 1 wash cloth and too many hand towels. We asked 3x for wash cloths and never received them. So, my recommendation is stop there for the view and a walk around the lake but definitely look for somewhere else to stay. read more

Rarely am I disappointed with food at a restaurant, but I was definitely disappointed here. They said the kitchen was backed up, and so we were willing to wait. Still, I'd expect the food would be hot when it arrived. Everything was luke warm and needed a lot of salt and pepper to make it edible. To top it off, after waiting a long time for food and our check, I then tried to purchase some things from the gift shop and they told me they were closed - after I passed a couple people working while I was picking out my stuff. Ugh. Moths. Moths. Moths. Our cabin #20 was absolutely infested. We killed hundreds during a 4-day stay. They were flying in our hair and faces at night. Couldn't turn on any lights to read and the tv was a magnet for them. So we covered our faces with sheets, stuck pillows over our heads to keep the light from blinding us... a light which, in a futile attempt to redirect the insects to it, we had to leave on. Front desk was of no help whatsoever and I was told by one clerk that the reason for the infestation was because it was a state park. Told her I'd stayed in many state parks and never had an issue such as this. Upon our checking out, I asked to speak to the GM. This second clerk advised me that, while he was there, she was authorized to speak in his stead and went onto say the moth situation at the Park had been a problem for the past year+. It was disappointing to say the least that no offer was made to comp even a small portion of the over $1,000 we paid. Lesson learned. Never ever again will we stay there. read more

This is our first vacation around this area and we were surprised by the unfriendliness of the staff. The food was ridiculously expensive for the quality, place is very unclean, waitresses eating customers food off plates, wrong orders, and don't take-out if you wish to sit on the patio. We were a table of 9 and had to wait quite a while despite empty tables. Ok no problem. We were the only table our waitress had at the time. we never got silverware, we had to get our own straws, had to ask for napkins, then after 35 minutes one in our party didn't even get their food. waitress said "they are still working on it". 20 minutes later as several other tables get their food, the GM shows up with the wrong food and gets confrontational saying "do you wanna talk about this some where else". Then he comes back with a single bill after we explicitly explained to the waitress 3. After all of this all the GM did was take off the cost of food we never got! read more

Beautiful place to eat... the food was wonderful I had fish and chips that were the best. The fish was beer battered and you definitely taste it. My boyfriend had the buffalo burger and said it was the best burger he's had. The only thing we didn't like was the coleslaw which was a vinegar and oil based rather than a mayo based so we weren't fans. read more

We didn't stay at the lodge, even though the cabins looked amazing. Just stopped to use the restroom and after looking at their breakfast menu we decided to have brunch. The Garden Breakfast was so good, Feta topped scrambled eggs and a variety of vegetables! I substituted fresh fruit for the potatoes and it also came with toast, biscuit or muffin. My husband had the Western Scramble and it was delicious too! Our bacon was crisp and not at all greasy! The latte was one of the best I've had on vacation. After we took a walk by lake and to see their walking bridge with a creek running under it. Such a relaxing and unexpected brunch. Last stop before we headed home. read more

We didn't stay at the lodge, but stopped at the restaurant for lunch while spending the day at Custer State Park. I had the buffalo chili which was some of the BEST chili I've ever had! I ate an entire bowl, part of my husband's bowl, and used quite a bit of self constraint in deciding not to order another one. My son had the best buffalo burger yet, and one of us orders one everytime we are anywhere they are offered. Come here for lunch and order anything with buffalo! read more

We chose to eat at the Lodge when staying at one of the cabins there. Being able to eat lakeside at such a beautiful place automatically gives this a bump up. My wife really enjoyed the Cobb Salad that she ordered, and they did well to leave off the blue cheese she does not like. The burgers came with a house sauce that was over-applied and made the bun soggier that me and my daughter would have liked. The kids cheese burger was really tiny, like a mini-slider. They were very generous with the fries, and I had potato wedges that were really good. Service was quick and friendly, really nice that they have a nice quiet place like this so far from the Black Hills towns. read more

I would give it a zero but it doesn't go that low. Husband and I stopped for dinner at the lodge, ordered chicken and fries/potato wedges (not potato logs). The attendant could barely speak English. The food in the case looked great but when our order arrived the chicken must have been left over from 2 days ago, and tasted like it had been reheated several times. We thought we were getting fried chicken, we got chicken jerky. We got 6 potato wedges with one and about a dozen-dozen and a half french fries with the other. The biscuits I'm quite sure we're hockey pucks in a previous life. ABSOLUTELY THE WORST AND MOST DISGUSTING FOOD and way overpriced ( $22) for quantity and quality.. Will never stop there again. I ordered the fish and chips for lunch (10.99). I asked if I could sub coleslaw for the french fries and was told I could. When the total was rung up for both our meals we couldn't figure out why it was so high. They had charged me an extra $2.60 for the coleslaw, and said that's what they had to do. My husband had a hamburger and had a choice of french fries, coleslaw or another item. I don't understand what the problem is. When I received my meal there were 3 tiny pieces of fish and a small cup of coleslaw which was just barely colder than room temp. All that for $13.99! read more
