This is hands down the best place I've been to in the whole of Western America -- and trust me, as a European (British) who grew up in London and lived in New York, I'm pretty particular when it comes to my hair. From the very first visit, I knew this place was different. Not only am I now genuinely close friends with Shane, the owner, and his wife, but also with the entire team -- who are some of the nicest, most welcoming people I've met since moving here. What really sets them apart, though, is the sheer talent across the board. I've had my hair cut and colored by so many different team members -- which says a lot, because guys tend to get pretty territorial about who cuts their hair. My wife also now goes here. I trust everyone completely. The consistency and quality are unmatched. Since I cant write two reviews here for two separate stylists I will leave one with two parts. Jasmine and Stef cut my hair. I came with them from another salon to this location. Let me say how incredible these two ladies are. Jasmine is a master of the fade/does braids and is an overall brilliant stylist. She is an amazing listener. Never rushes and really has amazing attention to detail. One of the finest hairstylists around and I will go wherever she does. Stef is equally as good. Stef's specialty is color. She has colored my hair and it has felt so healthy and silky even after four processes. Stef is hilarious and has become a great friend as well. I feel comfortable talking to her and her artistry/ attention to detail is incredible as well. This shop should feel so lucky to have both of them around. The talent is endless! Got a great cut by Sherlyn. I like a more masculine cut and she understood my sensibility. I also appreciate that their cuts are priced by length, not gender. It's one of the first things I look for nowadays when deciding where to go. The atmosphere in The Cut By is super cool- maybe a little intimidatingly so? Not really a negative but I felt underdressed facing the baroque curtains, edgy modern art, velvet couches and a big vintage motorcycle in the middle of the store. There's definitely a hip (maybe hipster) vibe inside. That said, unlike many hip Hollywood salons, the prices are very reasonable. Again I appreciate that they price based on the length of the cut and the services you select. I saw they do shaves and barber services which are hard to find with covid. Will be referring my boyfriend to here as he's been itching for a close shave for months. No parking lot but there are meters all along the street in front of the shop. Initially when I came to "The cut by" i got my hair done by Daniel. Apparently he was new there. He did a terrible job. My roots were dark, there was a harsh border between a hole inch of dark roots and newly blonde hair... Color was too yellow... hair was kind of burnt ... it looked like I did it myself at home two mo the ago... the owner of the business was nice enough to offer to fix it with the new stylist she recommended... So, I Went back to this salon to fix a poor bleach job and Sher, my new stylist, did an amazing job with Color ! I finally have a color I wanted ! Huge Thank you to Leslie, the owner, for helping me get better results! Update: Unfortunately now my hair is dry, brittle and is breaking off a lot... it will take me years to grow it out again... I might have to cut it short... () but at least I don't need to Color it for a couple of months... applying more bleach was definitely a mistake... I have very mixed feelings right now... there's nothing I can do to heal the damage now, and it breaks my heart... However, the Color looks great... definitely better than before... Only time will help me now... Still grateful to the ladies who cared enough to offer to try and fix it... I only wish we didn't bleach it more... live and learn.... Update ... it's now been a week after my second visit... the aftermath is devastating... my hair is ruined... the breakage from the last round of bleaching has left me with very little hair left and it's so dry and brittle, that I am pretty sure I will have to cut it off soon... the only section that is holding up is the one in the back of my head that I didn't let them touch... I feel bad leaving this review, cause i really liked some of the people that worked there, but the truth is - my hair is completely ruined now with no hope of repair. It will take me years to recover from this damage.... And the reason I went to that place is cause of all the great reviews.... I wish I didn't .... I have included the photos of what my hair looks like now. I would not encourage anyone going blonde at this place. We discussed details, and then Joey gave me one of the best haircuts of my life. It even included a hot towel at the end. I'm very pleased. The shop's decor is a comfortable cross between a classic salon and some of the earthy tones of an old-style barbershop. Though unlike a barbershop, the front door says "No Walk-Ins, Appointments Only". So schedule accordingly. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Restyling is something everyone needs now and again so you don't look like one of those old guys who appears like a teenager. You can't pull it off no matter how hard you try. This is a good place to change into your own, slightly older self under the care of someone who can help you find your new look and cut it that way a few times so you settle into it. They can probably do more than that, but that's what I used them for, and it worked. Result? I don't quite resemble my painting that I use here any more, but that's a good thing. This place use to be awesome with all the talented hair stylists they were really good and professional and made perfect haircuts and could give anyone any type of cut you wanted as long as you had the length. On top of that it felt like a cool hip/rock/classy place to be....now that all of the good hair stylists are gone rather it be from covid or not they have been replace by in terms of talent, the worst possible you could find. They don't understand what they're really doing or raise up to the level the company they use to work for had standards for. Now this place feels like you're at the circus of books store but they cut your hair and do a mediocre if not shit job and charge you over $70. Meanwhile Grey Matter does it perfectly. Highly recommend going to grey matter if you want what your asking for and you even better they're a lot better at cutting hair, oh ya they also charge $60 not over $70. I think you have to review a haircut in two stages. First is the initial experience, and The Cut By and Wade get five stars in this department. Making appointments is quick and easy; Wade and Shane both use an on-line self-serve appointment engine that beats the heck out of making appointments over the phone. Their space is thoughtfully designed with a lot of great vintage pieces, but also very comfortable. And the appointment itself was great - Wade spent a full hour talking to me about my life and my hair (I was a first time customer), telling me things I hadn't known about my hair and how it grows, and then cutting it meticulously. After a steaming eucalyptus towel at the end, I left feeling good about the world. But you can't rate a haircut the moment you walk out the door, which is why I've waited more than three weeks to write this review. And this is the best part - for the first time in my life, my hair was cut with such expert attention to how it grows and how my head is shaped that it looks good pretty much all the time, week after week.
