I'm leaving this review for Anya Martin, who is truly exceptional. She took the time to really understand what I wanted, asked thoughtful questions about my long-term hair goals, and gave me genuinly helpful advice on how to care for my hair. I left the salon feeling great, and a week later I'm loving my haircut even more. I'm especially grateful to Anya and the salon for being so accommodating and respectful since I wear the hijab and require privacy during hair services - something many salons have turned me away for in the past, and Anya handled everything with such kindness and professionalism. Anya is incredibly talented, patient, and kind. My hair feels healthier, fuller, and more voluminous than it has in a long time - and she gave me curtain bangs I honestly didn't think my hair could pull off. I booked my second appt with Sal Salcedo months ago. He was aware this was the appt before my wedding. I was called one hour before the start time and told he was running 15 min late. I said I had another appt after but that would be fine. I arrived and sat down and waited. They said I was checked in. I waited one hour before going to the front desk to say that now, I would not have time to do the appt because, as I told them, I would have to leave for another appt. I had allotted 2 hours and now there was only 1 hour left and I had not even been seen or sent for hair washing. All the while I waited, I could see Sal doing at least 2 other people's hair. When I asked the front desk if I could reschedule, they said they would talk to him. Several minutes passed. Sal was aware that I was there, but chose not to speak to me himself. He chose not to even take two minutes to face me and apologize. He was going to Mexico the next night, and could only offer the next day during hours I had to work. The salon manager apologized for Sal and offered another hair dresser. I have curly hair and want someone experienced in curly hair- especially when the haircut is right before my wedding and will cost hundreds of dollars. I think the worst part was that Sal was right there but simply didn't have the courtesy to apologize. I will never return to this salon. As for my wedding in two weeks, I have asked my makeup artist to help me find someone. read more

Nova Arts Salon is a really cute and vibe-y salon settled on The Row next to the parking garage. It's dark and moody with lots of natural light and plants that fill the space. I found Anya on Reddit and came in on a nice Sunday to get a curly cut from her. She was super comfortable doing my hair and talking to me about what I wanted, and even made suggestions that went along with what my endgame was. I essentially told her I wanted to keep my bangs and my face framing little hair tendrils, and she can do what she wanted with the rest! From there, she asked questions such as how heavy my hair feels regularly/the last time I got it cut, if I like my hair to have volume or sit the way it is and mimicked with my hair how both versions looked, made observations and suggestions on where we could go. Honestly, this was the best experience I've had! She thinned out a lot of my hair as well since it gets pretty heavy for me, gave me a nice shape and my hair more personality, and even layers on the back to make everything more cohesive! Frankie was my wash tech (is that what they're called?) and she was great to talk to about books! She was also very cautious on making sure the water was just right for my scalp. I've been going to Nova for about 2 years now, idk maybe even more. My appointments have always been with Kelly and Amanda. Kelly does my coloring and she just gets it every time. She moves quick but still takes the time to have conversations and catch up with you. I love how I can just show her a picture and she already knows what to do and brings your vision to life. Now, Amanda is the one who cuts my hair. She does a great job on cutting and keeping the length of my hair when I want to keep it long. An FYI this salon has Specialists, that's why I am mentioning 2 women. Overall, I am happy I can say I enjoy my days at the salon. 10/10 Nova Arts Salon is the bees kneeees! Price range is on the higher end, but I think their quality of work, expertise, and the environment totally justify the costs. I have never died my hair in my entire life prior to coming here (natural blonde) and thanks to Kelley I have now been a redhead/copper-ish girlie for the last two years and it has become part of my dna. I always go for a bob, but for some reason my neck grew out longer than the rest of my hair so I ended up with a weird mullet-y growth back there. If that's what you're into, that's cool but I'm not cool enough to pull that off. In the end, Katherine tamed the chaos and I left with my clean bob I requested, with my hair trimmed back even more in the back to ensure it doesn't grow back wonky and embarrassing. It's a month post-haircut and everything still looks clean. Bonus points for having an adorable dog on site and also being opened on Sunday during Smorgasburg to allow my partner to eat BBQ to his hearts content unsupervised while I get my haircut. read more

I was open to a creative cut, and after seeing Sal's work on Instagram, I told him I trusted his work. As an artist, I didn't want to over-direct. He said he had something in mind and was excited but couldn't find a good example because it would be new. I agreed. After the cut, Sal turned to his next customer, and the assistant just handed me the mirror to show me the back. It looked awful from the side and not flattering to me at all. Ten inches gone. No one asked if I was happy with it; the assistant just asked for my robe (as in "we're done"). I felt very dismissed and taken by surprise. I don't feel comfortable going to this salon anymore. I'd gone there a handful of times but never had this kind of dismissal. The manager Weston called me to offer for me to come back and talk about it, but I can't even bring myself to do that. read more

Beverly (colorist) and Rachel (stylist) are true artists and did SUCH a good job with my hair! they were so sweet to me, listened to me on exactly what i wanted to do with my hair, and executed to perfection. they were both such sweethearts and we had great conversation too. my hair turned out even more perfect than how i expected. rachel gave me tips for hair care styling and washing and really cares about hair longevity and keeping it looking its best long after you leave the salon. it was a 10/10 experience and i really recommend Nova, especially these two ladies!!! read more

Ive been here twice- once with Sal (amazing!) And second most recent time with Amanda. The front desk people were so friendly and offered me beverages before my appointment. ***before my appointment, i researched and came prepared with photo references of previous cuts Amanda has done. I highly recommend everyone do this, as everyone has different definitions of the same word whereas visual communication is more clear*** I cant recommend Amanda enough. She was genuine and gentle and really listened and respected my request to keep my length long as possible while getting layers and a short trim. She trimmed my hair with my hair facing the mirror so I can see (instead of trimming my hair behind me) and asked multiple times if the length was good. She was really considerate. The assistants who wash my hair are also very nice, everyone here works really hard and seem like genuinely nice people who want to help you look good! My haircut from Amanda was exactly what I wanted- a clean trim to get rid of the dead ends and more layers for volume that fall effortlessly since i dont style my hair regularly. I was worried how it would look once I showered and air-dried and honestly? Looks so good, I have been getting a lot of compliments. The whole appointment took about 1.5 hours. Another over-priced, snotty hair salon in the Arts District with bad customer service. I cancelled twice: Once my car wouldn't start. Second, I got a COVID pos test and cancelled to protect the salon staff. I was treated like a jerk, not given an opportunity to reschedule, and told someone would call me back to let me know their policy about COVID and whether I should come in or not. Instead, they sent a receipt for half the price of the haircut I didn't receive and no phone call. Not cool. It's not so much the money, it's the attitude and the disrespect. This would have been my third time visiting this place, but being a repeat customer means nothing to them. Times are tough enough without people treating each-other this way. I've been in the Arts District long enough to know the places that don't treat their customers well don't last long. I can go get an overpriced and mediocre haircut somewhere else. A little sympathy would have gone a long way. Update to response below: They did not call and I've had my phone with me all day. No messages. I just booked another appointment with them today and realized I hadn't yet left a good review. I found them on Instagram, not sure how. I will not let anyone else touch my hair, period. I recently moved away and I am literally flying from Texas to Los Angeles for a haircut. Call me crazy all you want, but it's worth it. My personal appearance is extremely important to me, and having my hair always cut and styled well is the #1 way to look put together. Yes, having a great wardrobe is important, but I "wear" my hair every day. I go to Sal because I saw his awesome work on IG, and I have never left disappointed with my haircut. When I arrive, they offer espresso water etc. The vibe is very industrial loft chic, modern / natural. The attention to detail is what makes me feel like a star when I'm there, such as the faux leaf coaster for my delicious coffee I was served and natural crystals and stones all around. Moss growing out of the modern bricks, high ceilings painted dark, just everything. I wish that place was my apartment lol. -I always get someone on the phone when I call -they are very responsive and kind -good vibes flow through the air when I'm in that place, you could cut 'em with a knife -my hair looks so great; I get WAY TOO MANY COMPLIMENTS its crazy -the parking is super convenient -they have THE BEST products that are all natural. You've gotta try the dry shampoo it totally is the best I've ever used, and they also sell travel size -there are other cute shops nearby so you can really treat yourself before or after -open on sundays -They are good people that I can really tell they care about what they do. -I feel like a famous celebrity rockstar when I leave I can't wait until I move back to LA so I can just drive to get my haircut, vs a 4-hour flight, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Before coming here, I had trouble finding the right hairstyle that would work for me. That is until I came to Nova Arts Salon. These people aren't just hairstylists and barbers. They are artists. I was a slab of marble, and like Michaelangelo, the artists here sculpted me into something beautiful like the Statue of David. My haircut always comes out fire and my dyes are always beautiful done. Other salons always messed up my hair/fried it and/or didn't get the color right. Ngl I'd die for the artists who work here. Chris & Chris! I had not stepped foot in a salon in such a long time! Especially because of COVID. The whole Nova Experience was wonderful with my COLOR & CUT. SO MUCH BOUNCE AND SO MUCH VOLUME!!!! [Setting up Appointment] I called and exchanged a few emails with Westin and Mindy regarding my appointment, and they gave me some options as well as sent Instagram names of the hairstylists there. (SO HELPFUL) [Day of Service] When I got there they validated parking for me and walked me through all the covid protocols. Clean and extremely organized. COLOR-I first started off with Chris Li, he is so sweet and really understood exactly the color that I wanted. He also offered some suggestions and colors based off of my skin olive skin tone! My hair came out beautiful!!! CUT- Chris Hill is the VOLUME MASTER. I had long weighed down and uneven hair, I asked Chris to cut off all the damage, and I was super nervous about how short it was gonna be....but he recommended layers and face framing pieces to add bounce and shape. When you walk into Nova Arts salon, you enter a hip, humble and loving atmosphere that is deeply comforting. Absolutely no ego anywhere, just friendly and beautiful staff. Sal and his team exude creativity and go at length to assure all your needs are met. Assistants, Sean and Cameron, were highly attentive; I felt like I was surrounded by family the whole time. Sal is the most talented stylist! I requested a transformative haircut and am now rocking a style that requires very little styling which is exactly what I wanted. I've been wanting to try this salon for awhile, but was a hesitant because it's definitely pricier than other salons. However, I got lucky that colorist Camilla was looking for a hair model and she was charging fraction of the regular plus a cut with stylist Amanda. Camilla had to color correct my hair and take me from a warm dark brunette with plenty of red tones to a cool lighter brown. She was friendly, sweet, approachable and meticulous when it came down to business. Camilla knows her stuff! The entire process took about 6 hours, but it honestly didn't even seem that long. I had gotten a cut couple days before, but wasn't 100% happy with the cut and didn't know what else Amanda could do to make the cut any better besides the bangs. WOW! She took my average cut to above average style. Amanda is friendly, easy going and she listens to you and has an intuitive touch. Even my mom commented on how great the color and cut was and she rarely compliments me on my hair!!Rarely. I am sooooo happy that I got hooked up with Camilla and Amanda and will definitely be going back to them as a regular!! I'm thrilled with my hair ! Nova is worth every penny ! read more
