It was settled in 1854, and today is home to around 3,100 San Sabans. Pecans became a big part of their economy in the 1870"s and today San Saba is simply known as the "Pecan Capital of the World". If you visit the Great San Saba River Pecan Company you can enjoy a complimentary cup of Pecan Coffee and sample their preserves. If you're lucky enough to visit between November and January, you can even pick your own pecans. We didn't travel to San Saba, but we did visit downtown Grapevine and saw their products in one of the many downtown stores. We came across a jar of their Peach Pecan and Amaretto Jam. Well, how can anyone in their right mind resist that? We had it with breakfast today and it was fantastic. Tons of peaches and pecans everywhere, swimming in an amaretto jelly. Imagine the following:…read more Traveling along a dusty Texas highway (after a week of hunting) you stumble upon the quaint but enjoyable town of San Saba (which is the name of a dear friend but is beside the point). We were directed by only two options, Dairy Queen and Sonic. Since DQ does not have pickleritas and cherry limeades, we chose the latter of the two. Driving by, we were greeted by two towering, majestic armadillo statues in the parking lot. Proceeding further, we pressed the button and ordered two sonic smashers and embraced the ambiance. The view was majestic. It was breathtaking. After receiving our order (by an exceptionally incredible and nice waitress) we devoured the essence of pure American comfort food. The fries were hot, the burger moist. It checked all the boxes. And they gave us WAYYY too many ketchup packets. Following the visit, the ice in my mega cherry limeade lasted about 75 miles down the road. That was a legendary visit. You will be impressed with the Sonic in San saba. It does not disappoint.
