Boar's Head Beef Hot Dog, cheeseburger, tater tots
    Kevin G.

College kids always have the best places to eat and the Dawg Shack by ODU is on that list. The hot dogs were tasty and had that snap that I remembered from living in Germany. The grill cheese was cooked just right and who could resist tater tots. My only let down was the onion rings/fries half and half, I only received three rings. The service was simple yet very effective and the staff always available to serve. The restaurant has a Happy Days vibe, but with up to date music playing. Even on a holiday they were busy so it definitely has its regulars. Great simple comfort food.

I headed here craving hot dogs and while that's not what I had for lunch today, I really enjoyed it. This is a quick order grill with a short menu. There's no salad here. They don't have a diet plate. I chose the cheeseburger with a side of onion rings. Far from healthy but it was cooked to order by friendly people and it arrived fresh and hot. The burger patty went on the grill and the onion rings went into the fryer when I ordered it. A few minutes later... deliciousness. This is a "joint." It's old school and it's not fancy. If they take credit cards, I don't know. I paid cash as it had a cash vibe. Delicious. [Review 18117 overall - 1387 in Virginia - 1639 of 2022.]

Working around the house all day, tan an errand for some hardware things, realized I hadn't eaten all day so stopped in for a snack. Notice the health rating 100 out of 100...so, ya know what to do, smash 1 of those buttons at the bottom;) lol TYIA...ok, fact - the building is old, but the owner and staff do a great job of keeping this place clean. Clean bathrooms, always appreciated. Clean floors and tables. My last stop in was near closing time, and the mop water was a strong chemical smell and not an ideal aroma when eating but I'd prefer cleanliness...so we continue. The service each time I've been here as been great. Very friendly, smiles, open to any questions about the menu or daily special. All I've tried has been their hotdogs, and good dawgs! They hit the spot. I'm a fan.

Yum, yum. This place is so good. I was at the groomers a few doors down and my groomer walked in with food from this establishment and I figured I'd grab a quick bite for lunch since my puppy was being serviced. This place gave me and my dad old school vibes with the counter service and simple menus. My dad even said that he used to buy hot dogs for $.10 in 1947 when he was 12 and this place brought back nostalgia for him. It's super clean and a quaint little storefront. It really does put you in the mind of the hot dog shops of the olden days. There were daily specials for the week written on a board so I went with the Monday special (hot sausage, French fries and a soda) and my dad got a regular dog with mustard and onions. The food really hit the spot! Everything was yummy. The sausage that I had was grilled to perfection (with nacho cheese) and laid perfectly on a fluffy hot dog bun. The fries tasted just like the good kind at football games. The food really put me in a ballpark mood! The service was also great as well. You can't beat the prices either. So, if you're craving good, old fashioned hot dogs, an American staple, then look no further!

2 Norfolk hot dogs all-the-way (mustard, chili, onions)

Walking into this place you see the employees talking to their regulars like family. I enjoyed their friendliness. I ordered two Norfolk hot dogs all the way. I noticed the snap of the dog right away after taking my first bite, however I felt that the chili was underwhelming. It just didn't have much taste to it. Despite the chili, I enjoyed the hotdog and the experience overall.

The saturday lunch special. Two hormel chilli dogs and a drink. (Fries were extra)

What a surprise!…read more We had a quick bite here before going to the Chartway Arena for a show and my husband wanted something for lunch. It was packed, probably with people doing what we were doing, but there were several seats at the bar so we snagged three and were greeted pretty quickly by a very friendly waitress. She made recommendations at my husband's request and suggested the special which was two hotdogs with topping of your choice, half order of fries or tots and a drink. He went with that and we ordered a single cheeseburger for our toddler. Food was out quickly - probably less than 10 minutes and the burgers and fries were piping hot and very good. My husband was pleased. Their menu is much larger than I expected with tons of burgers, sandwiches, some salads and other things. Our waitress and a few others checked on us while we ate to ensure we didn't need anything. Very good service. I think we will definitely come back.

The hot dog and NY Hot sausage were outstanding, the definition of how each should taste. Reagan and Liam were also outstanding, and I appreciated everything you did to make my first experience a great one. If you have a chance, please visit this restaurant. You won't be disappointed. It's one of the few old school Hot Dog Shops that still feature the iconic Norfolk Dog. The spot closes at 3pm each day. There was plenty of time to stop. The location is on Azalea Garden Road about 2 blocks north of Princess Anne Road. Don't expect a picturesque spot. This building is located in the midst of warehouses, car repair shops & such. Lew's was obviously packed with people wanting those few last days of the wonderful Norfolk Dogs. Parking was around the front & side of the shop & on the street. Even the "no parking" area was filled. We stepped directly into an earlier time. And I loved it. Seating was mainly around the counter. I would have loved to have eaten there. But we had just had donuts in Ghent. So we ordered at the cramped takeout counter, The cook, who I suspect was the owner's wife, cooked on a small grill near the front window. A young man took the orders, writing each takeout order on a paper bag for the cook. The proprietor busily did everything. He was personable & funny. He had his rules, just like his long gone competitors, We sat at the counter and talked to a customer who had driven down from Arlington. He obviously knew the place well as the owner bantered with him. When our order was ready we left, a little sad that we couldn't stay and eat. It had been so much fun. The Norfolk Dogs were wonderful. They're snap dogs, customarily served only with mustard, chili & onions. Lew's did allow other condiments added, even serving French fries. You could get thrown out of some of his former competitors for asking for catsup or potato chips. There must be a return before they close. I want to sit and eat at the counter. I want to come out with that familiar smell of onions in my hair. By the way, they're still open to selling the shop. It comes with the secret recipe for their chili sauce. Norfolk Dog lovers need this eatery to remain open. Don't let them be lost to time.

On the way home from the Yelp Event at O's Donuts, I remembered Lew's was closing this weekend. Luckily Lew's was right on our way home so we decided to stop and get orders to go. We walked in to a packed house and lots of others placing orders to go. Cash only signs were posted in several places so I was prepared when it was my turn to order and pay. Everyone was friendly and greeted each other and engaged in conversation. I felt like I had stepped back in time to a kinder, gentler place. I'm very sad that we are losing another piece of Norfolk history. The hotdogs were just as good as I remembered, as well as their French fries. One thing that caught my attention as we waited was the stools at the counter. This old Norfolk girl immediately said to my Friend, "these aren't stools, they are chairs with backs on them just like the lunch counters in Peoples Drug Store and Woolworth's when I was a kid." Loved this little walk down memory lane today. Happy retirement Lew, You will be missed.

Prices were reasonable, food was good, and staff were mostly nice. Felt like I fit in as a regular right away. I liked the old box TV's in the corner and the sound of the grill. I'm not even one for hotdogs, not a fan to be honest. However, I decided to try the namesake and was surprised by how good it was. I was even convinced to get another one on my first visit. I tried multiple things each week, and was pleased with all of it. Then one day, I was surprised in another way. They had hidden a loose body part under my burger. It was so disappointing. I walked out and once I was behind the building, I gave it the old "Ehh!" gesture by brushing my hand in the direction of the place. That signaled the end of my quarter-year patronage. A few months later, I was at a different eating establishment on the other side of town. And one of the employees from Lulu's walked in and said: "So you're not getting hotdogs tonight, huh?" I was dumbfounded. I couldn't believe it. First off, they were closed at the time, and secondly, I don't appreciate scraggly surprises in my food. (Now to be fair, the place I was in that night ALSO gave me a fuzzy memory to last a lifetime, but that's beside the point.) So if you decide to go here, make it a regular haunt, then suddenly stop going for three months, they'll stalk you and mock your new culinary preferences. Or maybe it was just me they did that to. Regardless, I haven't been back and it's been over ten years. Needless to say, I'm not going to be pressing my tuxedo or sewing any buttons on my vest anytime soon, as I'm not worried about looking my best, because I don't care that Lulu's back in town. I'm not returning.
