Before I begin let me start off by saying that this review is based solely upon my personal experiences and my personal experiences alone, so without further ado let's begin!. This is my second visit here, I'm not sure if I remembered to check in or not, but I made sure I did on this visit! I ordered the smoke hot sausage and small fries along with a sweet tea for my beverage. The food came out quick, good was hot and tasty! The guy who toke my order was kind and very soft spoken. It's a small business located inside of a strip mall, it has about 7 or 8 tables to dine in,and if you're on the go you can take it with you! Your choice.. Visited The Doghouse on the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend right when they opened at 11:00. Since we were there to dine-in we were told to take a seat anywhere. The interior is very clean and has they logo and other graphics on the walls. Very cute! My mom ordered an all beef coney with mustard, relish, and onions. I got the square dog which is a cut hot dog, ham, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a bun. The Square Dog for $7.99 included a bag of chips and a soda which seemed really reasonable. Our food was ready quickly. While it was being prepared we enjoyed listening to the wonderful woman working the counter banter with the other customers who were coming and going. The to-go business was busy but it was only us and one other customer inside while we were there. My mom really liked her coney. The snap was great and the dog itself had good flavor. I enjoyed my Square Dog. I do wish maybe it had been a touch more robust. It could have just been the presentation but it kinda looked skimpy. I ended up adding mustard to it as well and it made for a really tasty sandwich. I'll say the two person team behind the counter stays busy. When it was hectic, it did take some time to get refills, our check, etc. Again, I know they were busy but just wanted to point that out. If you're hungry for a hot dog, this is the place to go. Colorful and inviting, The Doghouse has various hot dogs: beef, bacon cheddar, skinless, jalapeno cheddar, and bacon cheddar. They also offer kielbasa, German brats, and chesseburgers, and other sandwiches. I was set in getting a hot dog and was happy to basic condiments were offered. I was happily surprised to see she-crab on the menu and the offering to put a drizzle in my dog. After having a sample of the soup, I ordered the beef hot dog with mustard, relish, and a drizzle of she crab. I also ordered a bowl of she- crab soup. It took longer than expected to get the soup. I believe the waitress was sidetracked by other customers. Once I reminded her, the warm bowl of soup was brought to me. Creamy and filled with crab, the soup was perfectly seasoned. I was happily impressed with the hot dog. The mustard and relish were placed at the bottom of the dog and the she crab drizzle was on top. The layers of tastes were delicious. Cool vibe kinda place. Old school for sure. There's usually 2-3 employees and it's small and very americana type place. Great sausage. Split fried and spicy. Good sauerkraut as well. Regular dog is nice as well. That is all I've had. Good service and good food for a hot dog joint. Pretty good prices and quick lunch place. I am not a huge hot dog fan, but I'm always a sucker for great reviews on Yelp. One of those places with great reviews, Ray's Dog House (RDH) is located at Western Branch in Chesapeake. It's in a rundown strip mall, but don't let that deter you. Having picked up my oldest son from the library, he was famished. We decided to check out RDH. The inside of RDH is small but looks like a regular diner--clean and tidy. The restaurant had steady business, even during the afternoon. The waitress immediately came over to greet us, and I mentioned it was our first time. She politely explained about their menu, and differences in all the types of hot dogs. I ordered an All Beef Coney Island ($2.25) with chili and coleslaw (add 40¢) and my son ordered two Coney Island dogs ($2.15) "all-the-way" (mustard, onions and chili). Their fries come as a half or full order (99¢/$1.65) and my son got a half. Coney Island hot dogs were created around the early 1900s in Michigan. Coney Island Hot Dogs are a natural-casing beef hot dog that has the infamous "snap" when you bite into it. RDH features Boar's Head brand such as bratwursts, smoked sausages, sandwiches, and salads. I am telling you that the All Beef Coney Island hot dogs were authentic, and delicious! Their chili and slaw were a great compliment to the dog, and the fries were hot and crispy. My son and I were impressed with RDH: wonderful service, delicious food, and great value. If you like Coney Island hot dogs, I highly recommend trying them out. I have been looking at Ray's for years but I needed some sustenance and this restaurant is close to our ATM - Smiles! Seriously, this restaurant is locally in a quaint strip mall. It is a family friendly location with great parking and a cute facade. The entire staff is sweet and helpful. The important part is The Hotdogs are AMAZING! I ate too many and I loved it. I just got in the car and started to drive. I was hungry and wanted to try a place is never been. This was a pleasant surprise. They get it right. First, it has an old school dinner feel to it.(see my pictures) It was packed around lunch time. The staff was very helpful and very friendly. The place was clean a welcoming. I got two all beef hotdogs with natural casings, because I like the bite w/ a side of fries. I topped those bad boys with ketchup, mustard, red onions, chili and cheese. They were outstanding. This place is a hoot. Very low-key, very limited menu, but the owners and wait staff obviously love what they do and it shows.

Nothing but good things to say about this local favorite. It is a hole in the wall where the locals come, the people know your name and regular's orders are memorized by the staff. This is local loving and you just know it is going to be satisfying. Went there with 3 friends and we each got 2 dogs and fries. Also tried the pork sandwich. They have a wide variety of dogs, toppings and other items that are ridiculously cheap. 2.25 for a dog and toppings. CRAZY! Everything was fast, fresh, hot and delicious. Really high quality meats. All Boars Head brand. The fries were the best I have had in a long time. The whole table raved about the food. The pork was excellent so there are tasty options if you tire of dogs....as if! I have been coming to this establishment for over 20 years. Ray and his wife knew how to treat their patrons and friends with courtesy and professionalism and always had a smile on their face. We'll all of that goodness left when it was bought by one of the most unprofessional owners I have met in a long time. Her and another employee were constantly yelling at one another behind the counter in front of other staff and customers. Then she proceeded to storm off and slam the rear door so hard I'm surprised it was still on the hinges. It scared my kids as well as two older folks half to death. When she came back, we let her know how unprofessional she was and she, with an attitude apologized and said that she was the owner and can refuse service to anyone and we can leave if we don't like it...well, that's what I did. I can assure you that I will no longer support this long standing business. It's unfortunate as with the lack of customer service and professionalism, I see the customer base dwindling to nothing and more than likely will sink. Just a shame. This is one of my favorite hidden gems in Portsmouth. I love the Boars head selection. The staff is always polite, and you always get your food quickly. I love how they ask what time will you arrive, so they can have your food hot and ready when you pick it up. I highly recommend Rat's Dog house. read more

We saw that this place had a lot of great reviews on Yelp so we went. The first thing I noticed was how welcoming the greeting was, and how nice everyone was. My husband got a hot dog that he said was one of, if not the best hot dog that he has ever had. I had a chicken salad sandwich that was very good and filling.
