Steamed Mussels - N'duja, wine-butter, fresh herbs, grilled bread

As a long-time Chicago diner who was through the doors when The Dearborn first opened, I've watched its menu evolve over the years. Very few people are as deeply familiar with the Chicago dining scene as I am fortunate to be--a gift and a curse that makes me hold local institutions to a high standard. Unfortunately, The Dearborn's execution hasn't kept pace. The underlying issue is consistent visit after visit: the kitchen continuously delivers dishes that are underseasoned and devoid of depth. I appreciate high-quality ingredients and subtle flavor profiles, but the plates here routinely leave me wanting. During a recent visit, we ordered two staples: the celebrated Fish & Chips and the Shrimp & Grits. Though advertised by our server as authentic New Orleans style, both the shrimp and the grits were remarkably bland. The flavors were so muted that we ended up asking for extra seasoning or hot sauce just to give the dish some life. The ingredients were undeniably fresh, the cooking was technically sound, and the service was fine. However, as a high-traffic spot catering heavily to tourists, the kitchen seems focused on playing it safe for mass appeal. It works for a broad audience, but for anyone who truly knows Chicago food, it falls short, and I can't say I look forward to returning. 2.51 stars all things considered.

The next brunch spot you have to try in Chicago is The Dearborn! The aesthetic here is upscale Irish tavern, with amazing vibes and service! I came here for brunch & most definitely need to come back for dinner! Their fish & chips beat Bobby Flay, & it's no surprise they did! This dish is perfection! The cod is fresh & flaky, and the batter has just the right crisp. The dish itself is huge & all the accompaniments are exactly what you want. The beignets are so fluffy and great for sharing a sweet treat to start or end your meal. The corned beef hash is packed with traditional Irish flavors and tastes delicious! You need to come here asap!

Man I absolutely love this place. The fish and chips lived up to the hype, but the beignets stole the show. I will continue to come back here anytime I'm in Chicago.

Wonderful Sunday afternoon brunch spot though a bit pricey! The food is excellent, with, as you can see, truly eclectic menus, and the service is outstanding. The music was vibrant but not loud.

This place is great. Music not too load while also not hearing your neighbor table talk. Food was too delicious for words! A must go place

Absolutely incredible from start to finish! Every dish was outstanding. The burger was perfectly cooked--juicy, tender, and full of flavor. The handmade gnocchi was phenomenal, with a delicious smoky flavor that made it unforgettable. The croquettes were unbelievably mouthwatering and absolutely delicious, and the burrata was simply to die for. On top of the amazing food, the restaurant had great music, a wonderful atmosphere, and a staff that was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely friendly. This was an exceptional dining experience, and I can't wait to come back. Highly recommend!

A memorable meal! We had long conversations with two two different staff members about cocktail ingredients and tasted three different spirits. The room is large and comfortable. It is also across the street from The Goodman Theater. After the server greated us and asked us if we had show tickets to know what time we had to leave. The cocktails were creative. The Fish & Chips were delicious.

My girlfriend and I had an amazing experience at The Dearborn! It was extremely busy, so the food took a little longer than expected, but the service was still great. We got the pepperoni pizza with hot honey and the Dearborn Special cheeseburger with bacon and egg, and both were fantastic. The burger was honestly phenomenal -- easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. The ambiance was also great and made for a really nice night in Chicago. Our server Cooper deserves a special shoutout because he really went out of his way to make our night special. I wanted to try the horchata piña colada, and Cooper recommended adding rum to it, which ended up being spectacular! He was friendly, attentive, and genuinely made the experience even better. Overall, my girlfriend and I had an amazing night here, and I'd highly recommend The Dearborn to anyone visiting Chicago looking for amazing food, great service, and a great atmosphere without breaking the bank.

My brother wanted to try the infamous fish and chips here! The servers were quick and helpful. The restaurant was slightly upscale inside. 8.5/10 fish and chips: light and crispy! 6/10 Parker house rolls: nothing special to it 6/10 hot honey pizza: mainly honey missing the hot 7/10 burger: solid burger

It wouldn't be a visit to Chicago without a visit to the Dearborn! Truly my favorite restaurant in Chicago. Service always on point and friendly. The best fish in chips you will likely ever have. The Creole Shrimp and Grits were otherworldly. Shrimp cooked perfectly, not a millisecond over or under cooked. The sauce...the grits... amazing. Until my next visit...rock on Dearborn. You're the best!!!!

This was our first lunch during our epic trip to Chicago. They set the bar very high! Annsling was our server and she was great! She made excellent recommendations and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal! The chef beat Bobby Flay with their Fish and Chips! I couldn't try it due to my allergy. But my momma did and loved it! Their burger was voted Best in Chicago! I totally agree! It was the perfect mix of meat, Gouda, and toppings! The Moscato was perfectly sweet and tasty! I will definitely visit again !

My partner booked a table so we could unwind and enjoy a nice dinner before heading to a Broadway show. We arrived early and spotted an open bar table, so we grabbed it. Perfect timing because it gave us a great view of a FIFA match while we informed the hotess and settle in. We ordered the hamachi collars, the Midwest salad, and the Amish curry chicken. We forgot to snap a picture of the hamachi collars, but they were a huge, delicious portion. The sauce leaned a bit sweet, but thankfully it wasn't poured directly over the fish. The standout dish was definitely the Amish curry chicken. It smelled incredible and tasted even better. Kudos to the managers for making the whole experience genuinely pleasant

Last night my wife and I stepped into The Dearborn and had an amazing dinning experience. It was an atmosphere of comfort and charm. The service was outstanding. Our dinner guide, Nicholas, was superb. Very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested two perfect spirits from the bar. My wife had the Irish old fashion which was excellent. I had a vodka Gimlet, which also was superb. Palate pleasing! The meal was absolutely enjoyable. I enjoyed the Curry Chicken. The thigh meat was tender and succulent. The curry was sweet and creamy. It came with pita bread which added to the dinning experience. Just wonderfully enjoyable. My wife enjoyed the Fish and Chips which beat Bobby Flay. True words from the menu. Wife said if was the best fish and chips she has ever had. Then came the dessert. Now I asked Nicolas and he suggested Pavlova and Blood Orange. Which lead me to survey Margaret and she suggested Sticky toffee date cake. After a friendly jostling back and forth of desert knowledge Greg the Maitre-d made also suggested the Sticky toffee. Both came and to be honest both were outstanding. Excellent choices. All and all this was a great dinning experience from beginning to end. We will return next time we are in Chicago.

Absolutely delicious! I went with friends to celebrate my birthday and had a wonderful time. We had an assortment of appetizers, drinks, meals and desserts and everything exceed our expectations. Everyone was beyond friendly and the food...sooo good. I shall dream about their chocolate cake. Definitely recommend you give this restaurant a try- you won't regret it!

Ask the Community - The Dearborn

Does it have a bar where you can eat dinner?

    Yes, there's bar seating.

Hello, are you able to accommodate a nut/peanut/sesame allergy if we order friend chicken or the burger? thank you

Hi Steph, We absolutely can adjust to those allergies for those items. Just let us know in person,…

Hello, does the restaurant offer a special menu for kids?

Hi Amanda. Thank you for your question. We do have separate offerings for kids! The following are available for lunch and dinner: Burger with fries, Chicken Fingers with fries, and Grilled Cheese with fries. We hope to see you soon!

    Are you guys dog friendly?

    NO.

    Where can you park?

Hi Josh. Thank you for your inquiry. There is street parking located in the area, and there is also a parking garage nearby, located at 181 N. Dearborn Street. We hope to see you soon!

I see in categories you have "vegan options". What are they?

Be careful here. Fries are cooked in the same oil as the chicken and the brussel sprouts are cooked on the same grill as the meat. Unless you want a salad my answer would be "none".

Do you offer half portions for people that have had bariatric surgery?

Thank you for your inquiry. We offer a cup of soup and side versions of our Little Gem Caesar and Market Salad. If you have any additional questions, please call us directly at (312)384-1242.

    Do you have outdoor seating?

Hi Lucy. Thank you for your question! Yes, we do have patio seating available, subject to availability. We hope to see you soon!

Can I get your recipe for Mussels?

    😂😂😂

Are jeans acceptable to wear for dinner on a Saturday?

    Absolutely!

How long should a party of three expect to be seated on a Sunday for lunch?

This is a time dependent, a good rule of thumb is 45min or less.

What are the Happy Hour specials and what days and times please?

I don't believe they have a happy hour but it's a wonderful place to go, worth the money.

What Is The Happy Hour Menu?

    Sorry but I didn't notice.

I see some comments about happy hour food and drink specials but do not see a separate menu on their website. Is there a happy hour menu on Friday or Sunday? If so, what are the hours? Thanks!

Hi, Fran! While we don't do drink specials for happy hour, we do have a small bites menu that's…

What is on the kid's menu? What is the price range?

Entrees for lunch are probably $15-25, but their menu also changes.

    Valet parking available or no?

    No valet parking isn't available

When does the lunch menu end and the dinner menu begin?

I'm not sure, but I believe brunch ends at 2 p.m.

    Open for Lunch?

    Yes!

Does the Dearborn have a happy hour menu? If he'd what is the details on the time and contents?

I don't think they do cuz I didn't see it on the menu.

It says this place is not good for kids. Why?

On the contrary! The Dearborn has a kid's menu that appeals to everyone. Aisles are wide enough to easily manage strollers, and we have many booster seats and high chairs for little ones!…

We ordered a flight of whiskey sours, which contained whiskeys from Japan, Vietnam, and Wisconsin. I also was able to order an amaretto sour, which they made with freshly hand beaten egg whites, which was a nice cherry on the top. As far as the whiskey flights go, I think the best one was the Vietnam flight because it had a slightly lemongrass twang and was a little bit lighter than the other two. The heaviest one was the Wisconsin which came with a little bit of a bite at the end, but it still wasn't bad if you're trying to blackout on a $15 budget. I would definitely come back with a larger group this seems like a great place, but is a little bit loud- so if you be prepared to yell or wear earplugs. The bathroom took my a second to find, which should have been intuitive considering it was on the opposite end of where you come in. I blame the lighting as things are already pretty hard to find in the dark, but eventually I made it there-Pat myself on the back.
