We had high hopes for this place and even so, our expectations were exceeded! From the waitstaff to the food, this place is top tier. We enjoyed the relaxing outdoor seating, but the inside is a really cool vibe, too. Our server Alyssa was well versed in the menu and took great care of us. The sommelier Victor was also very well versed in wine and added the perfect touch to our experience and service. Even the owner Jimmy was there and came by to say hello and ensure we had a great time. I'd highly recommend this restaurant if you get a chance to visit. The legendary Tap Room at the Pebble Beach Golf Course's nineteenth hole (a restaurant / Bar) has a moniker which has gone down in history: "The Tap Room has bad food, bad service, bad drinks, but at least it's expensive"! The Chicago Chop House has the same moniker, I'm sorry to say. As soon as I set foot in this chop house's old building, I was energized by the history, old school, three stories with pictures on the wall, and sunken bar ambiance. I loved this place as soon as I walked in! After that, everything fell apart; sad to say. The menu, as brimming as it was with such a wide assortment of steakhouse faire, was shockingly expensive. So much so, I ended up ordering a salad and an appetizer. The same with my wife and our guest. My calamari friti was cold and way too breaded. I asked for my salad to be chopped and tossed and what I got, needed a steak knife cut and handle it. The special smash burger which was promoted the entire month of June (and which brought us here) is only served in its outdoor patio wasn't happening due to the weather, was hugely disappointing. Our friend's prime rib was cold, bland and not appetizing. I'm giving this place Three Stars due to the fact, it is a Chicago icon but that's about it! Damn! read more

The Chicago Chop House hits the mark on quality, professional service and atmosphere! At last I've found a steakhouse that is worth the visit! I've been very disappointed lately with steakhouses that claim to be the best: Ruth Chris, Sullivan and even Mastro! Service: From the very beginning of our visit, service was strong. As we entered the door we were greeted well by the host who seemed highly invested in the restaurant. He even said my last name properly when he greeted us. He was very accommodating on seating to meet our needs. The bartender Nikola ( sorry about spelling), was excellent in attending to us immediately when we sat down. He listened well on what we needed in our drinks and level of sweetness. The drinks were perfect, thank you! The next shutout goes to Edwin who was working very hard on the floor: he made us a fabulous chop salad, brought out food and just filled in! He was definitely the star of the show! Great work ethic! And lastly I would like to recognize Roxana (sp?) who also worked extremely hard in making sure we had the proper silverware and our table was always kept clean and tidy. She did not miss a beat! The bacon that they serve with the potato and as an appetizer is out of this world! Lastly our steak was perfect: good thickness. Steak was cooked properly the first time, as it should be. To cap off our meal, we ordered cannoli: the desert is big enough for at least three people. The dessert comes with three cannolis. The only thing that was small was the shrimp cocktail. We had a great dinner at Chicago Chop House! We sat on the courtyard patio, which was a really nice atmosphere. It's beautifully set up with plenty of space and a great spot to enjoy the evening downtown. Everything we ordered was excellent. Three of us shared the prime rib bacon sliders, a burger, the Chef's Garden Pasta, a salad, a couple of martinis, and finished with the gelato sundae for dessert. Every dish was flavorful, the portions were generous, and the martinis were made perfectly. What really made the experience stand out was the service. Our server, Grace, was very friendly and knowledgeable and all of the staff encountered were friendly and kind. She made wonderful recommendations like the lobster bisque instead of the French onion or the steak butter with herbs versus the garlic one. These were fantastic suggestions and were delicious. My uncle brought me here 30ish years ago when we were in town for a meeting. What I remembered was an old school steakhouse setting with superb service, excellent steaks and great drinks. Fast forward thirty years and I'm in town and a colleague asked if I'd ever been here. So I told her about my experience and she immediately said let's go! I had been to this restaurant about 25 years ago and absolutely loved it. We are in Chicago visiting colleges and I returned with my kids hoping to give them the same experience. We went for Thursday night dinner and it was not crowded at all. The hostess must have been on her break because there was no one there to greet us when we came in. The servers from the dining room noticed we were waiting and tried to fill the gap by saying someone will be right with you. While we didn't wait long, it certainly was not a great first impression. I do love the ambiance and the decor of the restaurant. It has a great old school charm. The music playing fit the vibe and made for a nice setting. It would have been enhanced with a piano player to play the very nice piano in the front of the room, but it guess he was on break with the hostess. The rest of the night the service was good, but nothing noteworthy. It was what you would expect from an average restaurant. Same with the food. It was average. My son and I had the Tomahawk Ribeye which was cooked to our requested doneness, but it just seemed to be missing some flavor. It wasn't very juicy and honestly a little tough. We added a little peppercorn sauce along side the wild mushrooms and that helped. My daughter had the Fettuccine Alfredo which was again ok, but nothing special. It was a little dry and stuck together. All in all it was a very expensive average meal in a nice setting. We did have trouble on the way there as we were running a little behind and made multiple attempt to contact the restaurant ahead of time to let them know, my Fiancè was just placed on hold several times or hung up on. However I called and was able to speak to Debbie who immediately helped and passed the message on. The wait staff did not blink when we shared the appetizers and entrees. We tried the Waldorf Salad which was light and balanced. Everyone liked the steak tartar. The lobster special was 16oz, but the flavor was mild and a little overcooked. The dry aged rib-eye was hard to cook evenly. All the sides including the Mac and Cheese are big portions for sharing. We sampled the Wagyu meatballs, the crab cake, and the lobster "escargot." The seafood options were enjoyable but didn't quite rise to the level of memorable. The Wagyu meatball was a standout though (rich, savory, and a natural companion to the red wine). The Delmonico edged out the Kansas City strip for me, but the real surprise of the night was the lamb chops. Exceptional, and easily the most underrated item on the table. We arrived -20 minutes early for our reservation and had to wait closer to our reservation time which is understandable. Unfortunately, they allowed guests to eat at the bar so we had to stand in the waiting room which caused confusion when guests were trying to check in w/ the hostess. They were very busy so the food was delayed and didn't come to the table hot. We started w/ the grilled oysters which were great for an appetizer. I ordered the sea-bass which was seasoned well just came out like warm. My guest ordered the cowgirl steak which she said tasted good and we shared the brussel sprouts and the baked potato. The bisque was okay, not really creamy enough and lacked that sherry finish, keys to a good bisque. We arrived at our reservation time and was able to get seated right away. Staff was very attentive through out the evening. Overall a very great dining experience. They start you off with free bread and butter. The bread comes out fresh and warm and I believe there's a charge if you want more bread. We also ordered their Baked Truffle Burrata. You get Burrata cheese baked with a marinara sauce and served with ciabatta bread. Very filling especially when you've essentially eaten bread twice already. Big mistake on eating both haha. My wife ordered their Petit Filet medium and I ordered their Bone in Ribeye medium rare, both wet aged. The ribeye was pretty big and perfectly cooked medium rare. The steak was juicy with more than enough fat. Perhaps a little too fatty. My wife's filet mignon was very tender and pretty damn tasty for being cooked a medium. I still prefer my steaks cooked medium rare, but I would ah overall the filet tasted better than my ribeye. We also ordered a side of their Bacon Cheddar Mashed Potatoes. This side came out piping hot and remained that way until the end. It was more than enough food to fill us up. The bacon was thick cut and complicated the cream mashed potatoes very well. We also received free lava cake for my birthday. I love when they do great acknowledgments like this. Would definitely consider returning here. read more
