Had an early dinner on Friday night and it was outstanding. We hadn't been in for almost 10 years and they did not disappoint . The fish and chips were excellent and came with home cut fries and a nice shrimp salad. I had enough fish (4) to share one with the wife who had the shrimp and chips. We both had a pint of Wild Beaver amber from Deluxe Brewing. By the time we left there were four couples waiting to get tables. Try and show up by 5pm to get a booth. HHMMMMMM........Something has changed here. I took an account here for lunch yesterday and things seemed a little different. The beverage glasses were the first tip off as they have shrunk. The half bowl of chowder has shrunk but the cheese and crackers are the same. The fish appears, as I recall, gone from three to two pieces. The bay shrimp on the salad has become less. They don't offer a lot of the same dishes at lunch like they used to but offer a different one. The service is still first rate, which is good to see. I still like the Depot and their food is good, but they did drop a star. I hope they don't change much more. read more

Overall, The Depot was pretty darn sub-par. The batter on the fish was not a classic beer-batter that makes for a good fish and chips. The clam chowder had decent-sized clams in it, but was fairly flavorless. I'm still trying to understand the shrimp salad that comes with the meals--it looks like they dump a can of baby shrimp on top of a mishmash of bagged lettuce. Honestly, it's a bit overpriced for what I imagine is frozen, farmed fish that lacks real flavor. And the cocktail sauce? I've never seen cocktail sauce that looks like ketchup with relish mixed in. Came here expecting an amazing fish and chip place that is local. My girlfriend and I ordered the same thing and was utterly disappointed by the soggy, previously frozen fish and miscellaneous seafood. We questioned if the seafood was even real. This place has the makings of a neat spot.. the decor inside is cool. Menus are bolted to the walls in booth. Food was sorta let down for the price. The grease they deep fry in was getting old and it showed in the flavor of the fish. Wow! Super impressed. We got their combo seafood meal, deep fried havarti cheese, and clam chowder. All was amazing. The meal came with a salad that was HUGE with lots of bay shrimp. The soup was a nice sized portion with blocks of cheese and fancy crackers to put inside. For some reason I thought this was a drive thru (the place in the same parking lot is) so I had come with my sleeping kids in the back not thinking I had to go in. August 26th, 2019 I live in Skagit County WA and our local fish and chip restaurants are really good. So when I see a place thats not a corporate eatery / chain reasturant I will typically stop and give them a try. Came in around 6 pm on a Monday. 1st impression was on the eclectic decor and cozy environment. 10 booth / table seating plus an old school counter. The hanging airplanes, baseball and fishing items are cool to look and an ice breaker for discussion with other customers and waitress / hostess staff. Kira & Emily were the hostess and waitress working. They were both very knowledgeable about the menu, options for mix and match and offered recomendations to get the best value to try a sampling of appetizers to main course. I had the mushroom / zucchini appetizer, fish oyster combo and clam chowder. The fry on all of the items were consistent with a nice crunch, while the veggies and proteins maintained they taste and structure. The mushrooms and oysters stood out for me. Dinner also includes fries and a shrimp salad I subbed the fries for an extra piece of fish. The shrimp salad with lemon was a pleasant addition Shrimp are mini cocktail style, mine were sweet and cold. Nice add to compliment the fried items. Kira and Emily made sure the items I could not finish were properly prepared for me to take back to the hotel for lunch the next day Overall the service was excellent, the food quality, price point and portions exceeded my expectations. Love this place. I've been going to the Depot for many, many years. It does not disappoint. I enjoy their clam chowder and thoroughly enjoy their shrimp salads. And I love the harvarti cheese and water crackers that they serve along side some of their dishes. This restaurant has been a fish and chips spot since 1982. You can get fried calamari, scallops, clam strips,oysters and Alaskan Cod. Hand cut French fries. Buffalo wings as well. Chowder Too. Friendly staff and quick service. Beer and wine. This fried food was not greasey by any means. Done to perfection. read more

In the mid-80s I worked in Albany and I was able to go to The Depot often. Back then I really enjoyed it. Sadly, a change of jobs led me elsewhere and I wasn't able to get to The Depot very often. A few months ago I got a job in Albany again so that meant more chances to get to The Depot. Unfortunately, when I went back I was seriously disappointed. The fish was nearly identical to how I remembered it and that was good. The fries were also. I forgot to ask for them to be a little crisper but that was my fault. Where this place really let me down was in the presentation. The fish came on a piece of lettuce in a puddle of liquid. Within a couple of minutes the fish and fries were soaking wet and inedible. Had the staff showed the slightest interest in customer satisfaction ie., asked me how it was, I would have voiced my opinion but that did not happen. I would have given one star but in the few seconds that the fish was edible it did prove to be very good. In fact, it was just how I like it so a bonus for that. At this point in time I am undecided if I will return. Skippers has re-opened and is, in my opinion, better so it does not seem likely right now and that is unfortunate. There was a small parking lot in the back where I parked but there is also street parking. Arrived around 8 at night and it was surprisingly packed! Which is definitely a good sign. Overheard one of the customers saying to the waitress that he needed a tow truck to pull him out of the restaurant since he was so stuffed! I ordered the fish and fry ($9.50) which is basically fish and chips. French fries were made fresh and were very good. I love fish and chips. My husband asked me the other day, "Why do you go to skippers and not that place?" - meaning the Depot. So, today, I went. What I had: Scallops and chips for 7.95. What I got: about 6 scallops, nicely fried but a little juicy - when i bit them, scalding water came out. The fries were good, though some were a touch under done. I liked them though. Overall, 4 stars. It was definitely better than skippers for approximately the same price. The service was nice, the decor was fun. Cozy little restaurant that makes you feel like you're at the coast the moment you walk in. The food is great - home style cut fries, green salad, and a fried sea creature of your choosing. (I always get the shrimp, as I'm not a big into fin fish.) They also have tasty chowder and the best lemonade ever. Service has always been very friendly and responsive for me. If you want to take your tastebuds on a trip to Dullsville you gotta hit the Depot first! I don't know what attracted me to this place, it looks like a dive bar/crumpled shack. Very neat decor which will occupy your eyes while you wait for your grub. Service was well above par and swift. So far The Depot had exceeded all of my expectations. I ordered Fish and Chips ($8.50) and a soda ($2.00). When the fish and chips were brought I was highly disappointed. Two medium fish filets, fried, and a whole plateful of fries (Maybe call this one "Fries and Fish?" See Charlie T.'s review). I was offered Malt Vinegar for the fries which I promptly accepted. I was sorely disappointed in the food. The fries were small and short, about half a pinkie length. Completely unseasoned (salt, pepper, and ketchup were on the table). The fish, while plump and moist, lacked all flavor. The breading was crisp but had no POP! Bland. The lemon on the table couldn't even save the fish. Praise God for the tartar sauce, sure it makes me want to puke but I can at least taste THAT! ("Taste what?" you ask "the tartar sauce or the puke?" Well, in either case it's something!) If I had to pick five adjectives on the food they'd be: Moist, Plump, Delicate, White, and OMGITSALLFRIESANDNOFISHALLFRIESANDNOFISH!. See, not a single word there describing flavor because there wasn't any. I don't think I've ever had such bland unremarkable food ever. At least at Denny's they have the foresight to spit in your food to give it a little kick. The most common phrase I heard at The Depot? "Please pass the salt...and pepper...and maybe I'll see if I have any belly button lint..." (Random, unrelated observation. I ALWAYS have belly button lint. Always. Even when I wear a tee-shirt. Don't ask me how. In fact, let me check right now, brb...yep, not even wearing a sweater but there it is. Though I doubt this small piece of cotton could have saved my plate. Now where was I?) I'm surprised to read all the good reviews here and surprised at the lunch business. If you're a shrimp, scallops, and fish and chips place you have to have something that really grabs my attention. Nothing here did. A pity considering the good service and playful decor. Maybe I got an off plate or something. Maybe others here have had really tasty, flavorful grub. I only give it a 3 star because it was a seemingly average meal. We stopped in around noon for a small lunch, and it wasn't crowded which was good. My boyfriend and I both got the fish and fries plate, and he also got the chowder. The clams in the chowder seemed like they were most likely canned, which isn't necessarily bad, but it was on the salty side. The fries were definitely fresh, which I appreciated. The only thing I was truly turned off by was the tartar sauce. It had too much sugar in it which made it more dessert like than a good addition to the fish. I go to Albany often and I've given these folks a lot of trade. I would give five stars for a particular atmosphere here of patrons of a certain Old PNW type coming in regularly for their special outing. Five stars for staff too. Bad manners are the curse of waitstaff in rural Oregon but the Depot waitresses are far above average and only once have I detected a little hillbilly insolence. I prefer the staff and ambience on weekdays. The wines are good and the portions generous. The excellent pilsner on tap is $4.50 a pint, which is very competitive with the city's pubs. With the menu---and I haven't tried everything---I at least have to be very careful. The seafood I would bet is prebreaded frozen and only the shrimp are palatable. The scallops and oysters are tasteless at best and when cut into ooze a slimy water. I tried the clam chowder and it was just a thickened white liquid. I am not so naive as to expect a lot of clams in restaurant clam chowder but there weren't even any chopped potatoes or onions. I continue to patronize the restaurant, though far less often, because the food just doesn't cut it. At some point since I started coming, the owner installed cheap Muzak. It's not loud enough to preclude conversation, but it certainly detracts from the atmosphere. Of all my hangouts it is the one most consistently welcoming for seniors, dining alone or in groups. read more

This is probably my favorite fish & chips place anywhere!! The fish is always fresh tasting with minimal batter & just the right amount of spices. They cook the fries on the brown side which I really like. Or you can get salad which is always very green, fresh and served with a healthy portion of bay shrimp on top.
